I forgot to mention in the video, the sharpening angles were 24 degrees on the right side of the knife, and 21 degrees on the left side of the knife, for an inclusive edge of 45 degrees.
I get asked all the time why I don't even them up, to make the angle symmetrical from one side to the other. I do it for two reasons. 1. because I don't like to remove a lot of metal from the knife, and re profiling the edge by 3 degrees would definitely take some metal off. 2. because the knife isn't always shaped perfectly, and if I match both sides there's a high probability that I'll end up with a bevel that appears wider on one side compared to the other.
Thank you, Travis, for letting me demo on your awesome knife!
Kyle Kaplan thank you for doing what you do. Great customer service and great guys
IMO the spanto is a tough one with the 2nd grind line and chisel tip! Looks great!
Thank you for the tips.
Good video, good grit progression
The thickness of the blade will make the angle adjustment marks different on one side than the other. Get the micro adjustable pivot joints and also get a cube angle finder and forget the marks on the bar, they are just for reference but are not exact. The marker method will work. I find the electronic cube tool invaluable as it constantly allows me to check everything as I go and switch stones to make sure nothing changes in regards to the angle on either side, all it takes is for a pivot screw or anything to get loose even just a minor minor bit.
Kyle (the guy in the video) is an employee of wicked edge. Trust me, he knows. but what you are saying is true, you seem quite knowledgeable
I'm sure he does, great job on this one. I'm just making recommendations based of my own experiences. The marker does work and is excellent for finding the correct positioning of the blade, I just like to be able to check things as I go along and I use a jeweler loupe 10x to check the tip/rear/bevel constantly as I go along too. Just me. Also no more polished edges for me, too time consuming and they don't bite in as well (you can do a 600 grit micro bevel to help). I found 600-1000 grit with a light strop to work fine for my edc folder knives, faster to complete, and easier to touch up... again this is just me. I've also found that if I take the grit one up past my final grit then go back down I can concentrate on getting a nice finish scratch pattern to mimic a factory looking belt edge with a nice pattern.
The blade it thicker there. That’s why it looks like a different angle
Nice
I really enjoy my hinderers but they absolutely shit the bed on sharpness from factory
great video and tutorial thanks man. The price difference between the 130 and 300 is huge what are the advantages to the more expensive one other than convenience?
Cole Meredith Thanks! The Gen 3 has a rapid angle adjustment feature which moves the angle simultaneously on both sides, so it’s easier to use. The WE130 has manual adjustment and you have to do each side individually. That gives it a disadvantage for speed and ease of use, but it gains an advantage in versatility because the angles can be offset to sharpen asymmetrical grinds.
Just go with the 130, it's a great system. I have one and the ability to adjust each side individually is really nice.
What makes these stones so different that they don't need any water or oil?
Seems like after a few knives the table below would be full of metal and stone dust.
With diamond it's really not needed. After use, you wash them off to get the loose diamond and metal out of them. But since the stones are the moving part, it could just make a mess. Wipe the loose stuff with a cheap micro fiber when your done.
I mean 300 bucks is a whole nother nice knife... Seems u could make this outta stuff at hardware store for prob cheap
You should have showed how it cut
Where is the proof of sharpness? How long will that edge last?

Why are people so anally obsessed with a polished edge. A knife is just a tool. Do you polish your hammer.
Same reason you wax your car
Probably because it looks cool and they want to
polishing a hammer adds no benifits if anything it makes things worse, lol. however a polished edge (if done right) will make the cutting edge sharper. but i get your point. where is the balance between worth it and not worth it.
kitchen knife yes
work knife/pocket knife. not likely needed but if your willing to take the time and u derstand the edge dulls faster then its your choice. much like most things in life.
@@jasonwoody8041 for a work knife. This is where a micro bevel would come into play.
People pay a lot of money for these things. It better polish hammers too.
