I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.
Good stuff. I do them on your blade grinding attachment as well with it set to 10 degrees after putting up a burr from the gullets as you described. Thanks man!
Thanks, bud! Great video. I have a number of knives (kitchen and outdoors/adventures) that have serrations. This is perfect. I don’t have a leather strop, but the rough denim totally makes sense - I have some retired “construction” jeans that should do nicely. Cheers mate!
Question, why do you only use diamond stone/rod toward the edge instead of both directions? You said not to do it but didn't say why? I ask cause I usually use ny Fallkniven DC3 in a circular motion so I move in both/all directions with the diamond side and ceramic side (on plain edges obviously)
Same concept but it takes a lot longer. I use a diamond file that fits the shape of the scallop. File each scallop and deburr using strop. You can use a Dremel it needs some serious retoothing. Honestly, I really hate sharpening serrated knives, they just take a lot longer than a plain edge. A coarse, toothy edge on a plain edge works almost as well as a serrated anyways and it takes seconds to sharpen.
Josh, a quick fix for a dull serrated knife is to use the ceramic rod on the back side of the knife. It will act as a steel and straighten the edge well enough to cut until you have time for a proper sharpening. I like the pivot sharpener, ordered one today.
The Worksharp ken onion electric belt knife sharpener it says sharpen the flat side only ? Not the side with the serrated teeth cutting edge. So which is better to sharpen this way or the Belt sharpening system.
Just use it on the flat side I sharpened my leatherman wingman serrated part with the fine belt then I used the extra fine after and now it’s better than what it was from the factory, it’s got a mirror polish on it because I done that !
I tried using a rod and because I couldn't hold it at 20 degrees while making a stroke I fucked up the edge and now it feels like a butter knife. Cold steel tanto. I need a sharpener with guides
Hey guys...where can I get one of those large tapered diamond rods you show on the table in this video ? I appreciate you guys very much great videos !
if all of the serrations are the same, like on that bread knife, is it appropriate to slide the sharpener along the blade slowly, where the conical sharpener goes up/down along one serration after another horizontally vs back and forth (or just forward)? This sliding technique would seem to be faster and finer, but perhaps less controlled. Thoughts?
What are serrations good for? I recently picked up a Benchmade Mini Griptilian for a very good price but the blade is half-serrated. It's my first pocket knife. Feels weird to have serrations going halfway?
EYE PROTECTION! Where do you think those little raised burrs go? Right into the eyeball as you peak over the top. You only get two eyes. If you can't do that, just take your knives into a local shop and have them professionally done. Like all the real chefs do.
I wear eye protection all the time....birds, fishhooks, baseballs, tires off of semi trucks, flying stuff is all over. Fyi.....I only have one eye...but...thanks for the reminder to be safe. I'm not sure if I can even leave the house anymore.
@@mikehigg5588 my favorite knife maker at Case was doing a presentation there. He had only one eye as a result of a childhood accident. He felt obliged to live on the edge as well. No eye protection. As my old german grandfather used to say, "ve get too soon alt, und too late schmart. "
Yes, I do it to a serrated Wusthof (confectioners) silverpoint. It's not an expensive knife and one well used. Chainsaw files are super aggressive, so use it lightly and check for a burr like in the video. It goes without saying if your knife is important, much loved or expensive just don't do it. And I don't do it often.

Sandpaper--wrapped nail works
Screw It! I'll just make it a straight blade with a grinder
Serrations are very easy to sharpen

Very informative, learned a lot in this video, thanks
But then how do you sharppen the type of serrations that are as thin as paper, like the letter "I"?
Fantastic. I was going to just buy a new serrated knife. So sharpening is better for the environment also 😊
I'd like this video twice if I could! Thanks for the succinct and clear info!
That’s it? You work on an inch of a pocketknife and say that’s how ya do it? Wow. What about our 12” breadknife?

Lol that's not a good idea use a cheap carbide stone to do it! Not one of if your knives man
Where can I find the tool with the strop? Thanks so much!
I have a serrated pocket knife that needs sharpened and no tools whatsoever right now, do you have any suggestions?
Great video. Great, clear info. Also, you speak from experience.

Thank you for this information Josh.
I actually made a video on how to sharpen a serrated knife also. I think this produces a better outcome. ua-cam.com/video/Ym3wHYBkHfM/v-deo.html
Throw those kitchen steels away and get a ceramic or diamond rod. Stop what you’re doing and order one now. Your knives will thank you.

And then offer your first born!!!
Hey guys...where can I get one of those large tapered diamond rods you show on the table in this video ? I appreciate you guys very much great videos !
Well I finally found something I can do while I am on my deathbed in the meantime I'll just buy a new knife
The easiest way to sharpen a serrated blade, is to never purchase one to begin with...lol
where in the world did you get that tapered diamond rod? that size i mean, i have small ones, but none wide enough to use on bread knives.
Great video also I love your guided field sharpener best sharpener I've ever used
Excellently explaind!
I do enjoy serrations a lot I mostly sharpen them on a fine ceramic rod gets them razor sharp
Who makes that large, tapered diamond rod you're using for sharpening serrated knives?

That’s actually very common in multi-tool or more recent pocket knives.
For a single blade? It’s awesome to be able to slice AND saw.
Serrations are good for rope.
Will this technique work for Cutco serrated knives?
Why are you using cutco in the first place? They’re completely garbage.

WHAT ABOUT ELECTRIC KNIVES???
That's what I'm sitting here looking for

Yeah same with sharpening in general if you’re not careful obviously I use eye protection but not all the time depends where I am

If only burrs were that easy to remove when hand sharpening.. that they’ll just explode off the edge without you even trying. 😁
Thanks tall & skinny Ryan Nyquist
Thanks I the info
