Hopefully someone finds this useful and avoids them having to struggle to get Carplay working in their 2016 that was not converted yet.
You can find the part all over Ebay. The software portion you can get the update directly from the Ford Owner's site

Thank you for this info. After struggling to get the update downloaded I was losing my mind on what was wrong. This is the only place I found this information about the module. I ordered it after watching this. Picked it up the next day. Took like two minutes to change it out and now I have Apple play. Thank you!!

@valentinaaldana3529 this was a good number of years ago. Off hand I went to the ford sync site, added my vin and downloaded the file to usb. Then updated my head unit via usb.
This was my exact situation including the hassle with the dealership. Difference is I gave up until I found this video. Thank you!

Great informative video, found out in my 2016 Escape se that if I pried with my fingers from the bottom, the module practically jumped out. Not much force at all to remove it

Thanks for the great video. For people still having problems updating, you have to have patience. I used the thumbdrive method going from 1.0 to latest 3.x software and I had to drive for 2 hours and 19 min before it finally said software update complete on the screen.

this was a great informative video. I have a 2013 Escape with Sync 2 and going to replace it with the whole screen unit that has Sync 3.

At that point I would have been more inclined to go aftermarket since it’s a full swap out.
Saw that the HC3Z-19A387-B is replaced by HC3Z-19A387-E, so I ordered this directly from Ford for $50. They sent HC3Z-19A387-F which is an even newer revision. Just installed today and working great! 2016 Expedition EL

Ii did exactly as you suggested - it worked - spent 3.5 hours updating the software from a usb stick and that was painful. Removing the old part and installing it was really easy! Now I have Apple car play.

Great video. Do you know if 2016 F150 hub removal is difficult? The hub is in front console.
Ebber Jr3 it should be the same removal process, just different location.
The hubs are all the same piece, just diff illumination color and location.

How did you update the firmware to version 3.0? Awesome video, thanks!
Sorry, I did not record that as that was a precursor to figuring out I needed a new hub and decided then to make a video.
So I downloaded the software from the Ford owners site for my mode vehicle. Then put the iso file on a flash drive and installed via the flash drive from the settings menu on the radio.
It takes FOREVER if memory serves me

Great information! I even found the new hub you were talking about on eBay for $31. However, My old hum is a single USB with an SD card reader. I wonder if it's compatible with the new hub.

PMPerformance yes, it has the synce screen but different module than you had
Mark Las Vegas strange, but ford does strange stuff like that. I’d grab off amazon since a free return. But the only difference I could see is the SD slot would have another harness. So it would just be unplugged.
Hey, I have a 2016 F-150 with Sync3, doesn’t have apple CarPlay though but I can access Waze through Mobile Apps, so if I buy this USB hub upgrade I can get Apple CarPlay without needing to upgrade head unit?

I have no idea. You need to confirm if your unit will take the sync 3 upgrade first. If not, then no.

I have a 2016 Ford Edge. I downloaded the software and updated with no issues, also replaced the hub with the one you listed and apps / CarPlay still do not work. Any ideas ?
Did you turn on CarPlay features on your phone and in the unit itself?
I know you need to enable on the phone, but if memory serves me, something pops up on the head unit the first time the phone connects to accept the connection.
Did you have to upgrade the head unit or does it work with the one the car already had?
I believe in the video I touched upon needing to upgrade the firmware in the head unit. The hardware was not touched other than the USB hub

I have a 2016 Explorer ... the hub has a SD location also with the charge adapter how so I know if I order correct one
I cannot answer on that one unfortunately. I do not have an Explorer to test with.
I can't find the software update for my 2016 lincoln mkz. I followed the instructions but if I stay on the Ford website, the page never loads. If I go to the Lincoln website, there is no link to the Sync update. Anyone else have this problem? If one of you HAS successfully downloaded the file, would you be willing to share it?
I cannot say for certain on the Lincoln Vs ford. I think the firmware is the same regardless of model as long as it is not a Fusion. I think the hardware in the Fusion is different from what people are expressing in the comments.

I purchased and installed the new usb hub, but CarPlay is not popping up. Yes, sync 3 is updated and I now have txt msg available. Do I need an original iPhone charger for it to work? Has any one had this problem, or know how to help?

I don’t think I have ever said that. If I did, it was a response to someone saying they were already on sync3, just a diff build number than I showed in the video.

I cannot say for certain. Try the firmware first and see if it is sync3 compatible. If it is, then yes.
That part does not cost any money, just time.
Question- Could a 2016 Ford edge non navigation gets a maps after the update??
Not sure. I do not own an Edge, so I cannot answer for certain. It might though

Richard Chin you need to download via computer to a USB drive. You cannot do via an iPhone because you cannot mount as storage like with an android

I am not sure what you mean by "Simple". It needs to be a full color touch screen unit to start with if that is what you are asking. If so, as long as it takes the Sync3 update, it "should" work
It wouldn't work on my 2016 Fusion with SyncTouch. $800.00 option for a radio.
Dealer wanted $45 for the part, $90 to update to version 3, and $125 for labor 😂 I’m doing it myself, 5 minutes.

Anthony Alvarado download it on owner.ford.com to a usb drive then plug it into your usb hub in car. Should pop up “updating software “ on screen if done correctly. Will take awhile.

I’ll tell you what, our Escape has had some issues. I swear ours was made on a Monday or Friday. We bought with 29k miles and had the turbo replaced already, paint issues due to fender alignment from the factory, tailgate latching issues. Maybe more if I think harder about it. Thank god I still have a little bit of warranty left.

I do not think there is support for Android auto. I could be wrong, but I wouldn’t bet on it working. Your be better off swapping for an aftermarket unit

I've heard that the 2016 vehicles come with Android Auto with the default usb hub but has anyone had any issues otherwise?

Will this work on a Ford Fiesta 2016? My screen isn't a touchscreen but would still be cool.
If you do not have a touchscreen, then no.
There would be no value to seeing CarPlay on a 3” screen that has no touch options.
I would look into just replacing the whole unit if you want all the cool bells and whistles

I updated my software to sync 3, v3.0. I also got the new usb hub installed. I still don’t see a carplay prompt when I plug my phone in. Any idea why this wouldn’t be working? I’m going crazy here! Thanks
I think you need to enable CarPlay in your phone and trust it if memory serves me.

Does it say USB not supported on your Vehicle screen when plugging in the updated USB from Ford? Or are you talking about the Unsupported message on the Iphone when you plug your cable from the phone into the updated USB block from Ford?
If the phone, this is a usb cable issue. Either it is a 3rd party cable that has connection issues now and again, or there are some pins dirty or cable issues itself with bad connections.
If you are talking about on the Ford screen, make sure the firmware is up to date and on the level needed to run Carplay

From prior comments on this video, I have gathered the Fusion is a strange mid/early year thing and will not take the sync3 update.

I cannot say for certain.
If your unit will take the sync 3 update, it should.
So try that first before you spend money.
I tried to find this part. But it doesn’t look like it fits my model. I have the 2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6. Does this part still work for it?
The part I advised will work. Do not go by fitment guides as it was obviously not designed for this car

Im late to this video,, but i need help no one seems to know... I wanna install apple carplay to my ford fiesta its a 2016 and i cannot find a good installation site, they say “unknown fit”
Use the same concept in this video.
If your unit takes the firmware update, then get the upgraded usb hub. If it doesn’t, no sense in spending money on the hub.
The ford owner site should tell you if your unit is compatible with sync3 as the update will be avail for download.
Question. Will android auto still work or does it only allow CarPlay after changing the part?
I would assume Android auto as well, but I cannot say for certain as I only tested with Apple produxts

My bet is it is just the color of the led around the usb port, but don’t quote me on that.
Hey my 2016 fusion doesn’t have the double usb. It has single with an sd card slot for the navigation. What part do I order so I can have the car play?
Caleb Logan i am not sure. You would need to just look at the part numbers to see what is compatible or get the usb from a newer vehicle and retrofit it

Can verify this condition exists on the 2016 Edge Sport as well. From what I understand, the usb hubs in the 2016 m.y. Fords is not usb 3.0 compatible. Which is the issue with Carplay and the factory hub. Hope this helps.

Yes, the firmware needs to be updated before the functionality will work. You can do in whatever order you like, but without both pieces completed, it will not work for Carplay.
Sorry I did not outline the firmware update in any detail other than mentioning it, but I found this stuff out the hard way when the FW update alone did not work.

Rachel Doreck from the feedback I have gathered below, it does not. I believe the Fusion had a weird mid year thing that they had a different radio.

Rachel Doreck Ford is very known to just throw whatever they have laying around in certain models that were mid year changes.
The Fusion must have been one of those oddballs.
Thanks for this video! It gave me encouragement to try running the update again and accept that it could take up to 4 hours. It finished in just under 2. Updated from 1.0 to 3.0, like yours, but my build number is different. Is that a problem? Mine is Build 20204. I turned off the car completely for a few minutes and when I started it up again, got an pop up saying “USB hubs are not supported. Please remove.” I had already installed the new usb hub and had not gotten that pop up before, but used the usb hub to insert the usb drive that had the software update. I tried plugging in my iPhone 11 and it would still charge and the screen said “device detected” (or something like that). But I could not got CarPlay to work. I don’t see the screen that popped up for you, and when I went into my phone settings to check CarPlay there, it just spins looking for a device. Any suggestions?
I did try uninstalling the new usb hub with the car off, then reinstalling. Still got the error message upon turning on the car. I’m stumped!
Are you sure you got the same usb hub i mentioned in the video?
Build number should not matter as much as long as it is newer than mine.
@@PMPerformance Yes - it had the same numbers/letters on the box but slightly different on the white sticker on the hub. I googled that though and it said those were interchangeable. I did look online again and found a new one that I ordered and am going to return this one. Hoping it's just a faultiness with this current hub that is causing that "USB hubs are not supported" message.

Did the basic portion of the USB part work and just not CarPlay? It almost seems a hub issue from the message I would think.

@@PMPerformance yep, the usb would still charge my phone and detect my device for audio it just wouldn’t start CarPlay.
The replacement came today and I plugged it in, I am still not getting the CarPlay startup screen. I also did not get the usb error though. This one is the exact same label as yours, except instead of a B at the end it has an E.
I have an iPhone 11, not sure what else to do or try.

You need to upgrade to sync 3
Could you do this in a 2014?
No, 2016 was the mid year sync3 compatible change.
You would need to swap the radio to a later radio to do this and for all that, just go aftermarket.
This is more geared towards the people already with the 8” sync3 compatible units.

It looks like the Fusion they used an older radio
I have a 2018 F150 and bought a 2016 sync 3 touchscreen. It's suppose to have gps but nothing is working, the navigation option doesn't come up on the radio and it's stuck on sync 3 1 version and it won't update. I'm trying the trick of putting it on the flash drive and sticking it in the usb and nothing is working to update software. I think I'm going to just go to Ford and see what they say. I couple times when I was messing with the radio, the a/c controls popped up on the radio briefly and never came back on and the Navigation did the same thing. It popped up for a couple seconds and never showed again
I think you have much greater issues than CarPlay functionality. Sorry I cannot provide advice on this as I have never tried to retrofit a stock radio into a different car.
My guess is the radio is not fully compatible with your harness in your vehicle?
Not all the sync units are the same. Some have heating and ac controls in them and some so not.
There is a plethora of programming you can do to change these things with Forscan, but not in the scope of this video.
Forscan can be pretty complex, but may hold some answers for you possibly
@@PMPerformance I bought a sync harness from amazon and it was supposedly for my truck it was Sync 1 to2 and Sync 2 to 3. I don't know if the harness was bad quality but I spent a few hours running the cable the right way so everything would fit right and after I figured out where everything went, the screen stayed black. It would never power on, I didn't know what else to do so if I get time this week I'm to talk to ford and see what they say. I'll buy another harness if I have to but I didn't know what I actually needed

I am sure you can do it with it on and be fine, but no reason for it to be on. I always tell people to work on things with the car off for good measure, even when minuscule like this.

@@PMPerformance Installed the hub in my C-MAX! Works! Had some trouble disconnecting the plugs from the old hub at first. The plug release tabs were a little tricky. Car play didn't work right away, but a plug just needed to be pushed in farther. Thanks again for the helpful video! Saved me $$!

I cannot answer with any certainty as we do not have the Mondeo in the US, but my guess is no since sync3 was not even thought of in 2015, or 2014 when your car may have been built

Correct. CarPlay is only supported via a cable in most vehicles.
There are a select few manufacturers that as of like last year I believe allow over Bluetooth, but they are very sparse

Mine doesn’t have a double USB port, it has 1 usb and a line in port. It’s a 2016 expedition. Will this not work for mine? When I check for updates and enter my VIN and it says “your sync system (sync v4.6) is up to date. Does that mean I don’t need to update anything?
The amount of usb does not matter.
That sync version number according to google appears to be a gen1 and not sync3
I do not think this will work for you. Your vehicle may be the exception like the Fusion

Do you know if will help the navigation. I bought an expedition Saturday and didn’t look at the navigation but it has no gps signal circle thing and will not work. Tried master reset and nothing happened.
This is not related to navigation at all.
This is only for CarPlay functionality

Will this work with 2016 Lincoln models as well? They appear to have the same usb port.
All usb ports “look” the same
I am not sure though. I would make sure your radio can be updated to the proper sync 3 level first. If it can, then my guess would be yes
@@PMPerformance so I’ve done some more research and the Ford/Lincoln ports are essentially the same and it will work with that same part #. I have updated to the newest sync 3 version in my 2016 Lincoln MKS so I will order the port and find out for sure I guess!
@@tannerthomas5986 yea hardware wise, it all comes from the same bins. It’s just a matter of if your headunit took the update.

When buying a used Ford Fusion 2016. Will they automatically give you the part for free or do you have to buy it? If so how much is the part??
Sara Elaine they won’t give it to you or even know about it unless you work that in on the deal. The part is linked in the body of the video. I think it’s like $50-60
I just bought a 2016 which was originally a lease so it wasn’t updated like it should have been . After updating and having no luck I went to my dealership and the salesmen reccomended I buy the part on amazon instead of paying a labor fee and 80 dollars for the part. I spent 40 and it’s perfect!

Nope, as long as you are on Sync3 already, you just need the usb hub and you should be good to go.
You got lucky enough to cut out the hassle of having to do the firmware upgrade.

I have 16 Fusion with Sync Generation 2 - I have completed updates via USB and Ford website - but will new USB Hub work for me or not since I am still Sync Gen 2?
No, you need to be on sync3, which my understanding from the other comments Fusions were the oddballs that received an older radio that was not sync3 compatible
