This video saved me $1700. I was looking at replacing my head unit just so I could have Apple CarPlay. Found this video, bought the part, replaced it in less than 5 min and immediately had apple car play. Thanks for posting!
Thank you for publishiing this video. The installation took me all of 5 minutes and saved me from dumping $1800 bucks into the GU Auto 12.1 infotainment system for my truck. I didn't feel real good about that product since the only videos I could find were provided ny the manufacture. This worked just as you described!!

I just did mine today and love it! I struggled for about 10 minutes trying to take out the old module but eventually got it done. I love how you get straight to the point and help us how to do it ourselves.

2016 F-150 Platinum just upgraded today because I found your video and followed your steps, including going to the dealership yesterday afternoon to buy the module. Thank you so much for posting this - what a difference it makes! Your video was also very easy to follow. It took maybe 10 minutes. BTW, the same module here in Bakersfield CA was $57. + tax ...... and.....worth every penny!

Thank you so much for this video, I was looking everywhere for a method to update my system. The more I drove my wife CRV with CarPlay the more I was missing it on my 2016 F150. I spend days trying to update my unit from 3.0 to 3.4 without any success. I even started looking at replacement unit's aftermarket $700 to $1000. Then I found your video and wow how easy. I purchased my HUB from local ford dealer for $80 because I wanted it today. In about 15 minutes I had the old one out and new one in. Then the magic happens just plugged in my iPhone and I had all the apps like the new CRV car on a 2016 F150 sync 3.0. Now I did spend the next hour in the truck just loving and playing with all the apps. It is very easy, just sad that I did not find this years ago.

Ryan, I just spent an hour followed the ford website step by step and after it said update was successful….it still showed version 1.0 did you have this issue?

I went through the process and followed the directions exactly. It took my car over 3 hours to update. Not sure why. But when it got to the end and said installation complete. It worked! One thing none of the UA-camr's never mentioned was that the screen gives an alert saying that the USB is not compatible. Even though it all still works. My guess is because i got the parts from Amazon and not from Ford.

After waiting a week for the dealer to update sync and fix a faulty part. This was worth it. Thanks for the tutorial. Did it myself on my ‘16 and for some reason I had trouble unplugging the black plug unlike everyone else.

Just bought a ‘16 F150 with Sync 3. So glad I found this video. I was under the impression that you had to replace the APIM on the back of the head unit for $1,000. Gonna try this this weekend
If you have sync 3 I don’t believe you have to do all that. The $50(ish) dollar part should do the trick. (Price may vary due to video being a bit aged). Thank you so much for watching! 😁✌🏽

@@WSXST I did it this weekend . I swapped the USB port and bam 💥 apple carplay … but it does have to be sync 3.0 or better to work … I’m still working on 3.4 but can’t get it to update via Wi-Fi

I just purchased one, HC-19A387-F worked perfectly I have the 2016 F 150 XLT, believe it or not the right side was tough to get out, a small pry worked perfectly due to the curve twords the end.

Thanks for this video! My Sync 3 update process was a little tricky because Ford's system thought my 2016 was still on Sync Gen2 when it was actually on Sync 3 v1.0. I managed to find a donor VIN (2016 non-Nav as closely equipped to mine as reasonably possible) that allowed me to download Sync 3 3.0, installed via USB, bought the part you mentioned, and now I have Apple CarPlay

@@mattmiller1867 You may be able to find a VIN that someone has shared on a forum, or if you watch closely on UA-cam videos, you can see a truck's VIN when the SYNC info screen is shown. Put that VIN into Ford's system and download the latest for that truck. If the minimum for CarPlay is 2.0, I would shoot for that, and perhaps you can upgrade as you feel necessary from there. I happened to be able to download 3.0, so that's what I did. I'm just glad it worked. The upgrade process is wonky, and seems to strangely vary from truck to truck. I was able to leave the ignition on but not running (IN A SAFE LOCATION), and the process was done when I checked on the truck 30-40 min later.
I'm not aware of changes Ford made (if any) to the processing unit through the years and trim levels, but I would be very careful which VIN you use. Try to find one as similar to your vehicle as possible; minimum similarity could be year, trim, and nav/non-nav in my opinion, but that's just a guess. Also, remember to upload your successful upgrade file to Ford's system so it knows what version you now have, and you can avoid this situation in the future.

Matt Miller yes! What Bryan Huber said. Also, you can go to owner.ford.com, click on the owner tab, then under support & how-tos click on SYNC software updates.
This should give you more details on what you need to do. You may need a 3GB or higher usb drive in order to do the update properly. From my experience, it’s all free as well

Wish I would have searched for this video two years ago. Aside from the last character in the part number being upgraded to “F” (and the increase in price to $74, here in sunny Florida) it worked great on my ‘16 XLT. Don’t fret if you don’t see the CarPlay icon as soon as you turn on your truck. It’ll kick on once you plug in your iPhone. Thanks for the video!

Did this in the parking lot of the dealership yesterday and worked as expected on a 2016 F150 running Sync 3 version 3.0. Bought directly from Ford dealership and part interchange was HC3Z-19A387-F.
How did you get sync 3 version 3.0? I’m currently on sync 3 version 1.0 in my 2016 F150. I went to the owner portal to get an update but it will only let me download the same version I already have, 1.0.

I have read so many comments on this update but I am not sure if its what I am looking for? I listen Sirius classic rock all the time (i'm 67). All I am intersted in doing is updating the Nav system. Will this update it or do I need to go into the Ford store on line and buy the $100- to $200 dollar update USB. If you can thanks for your opinion or answer.

Question...I went out and bought the module and installed it today. It all pops up fine, shows my iPhone apps correctly, but do you have to keep the phone plugged in to the USB all the time, to have the apps work? As soon as I disconnected my phone, it went back to the Sync3 screen, which is why I'm asking.

The part number may not be the same still. Ford loves to supersede their part numbers a lot (basically update part numbers). With that said I would still go off the part number given. If they say it is no longer available, ask for them to check if there is a new superseded or updated part number. They should find it at that point. I hope this helps you a bit 😁✌🏽
2016 F150 XLT no Nav. Sync 3.0 version 2.0. Installed the HC3Z-19A387-E Module, plugged in my phone and it shows apple car play on the screen. No need to update. Ford acknowledges that the wifi update does not work. I tried, and it just searches for ever, so you won't be getting the so called " auto updates " because the WIFI just will not work ! You will need to down load the latest version onto a memory stick, or pay the Ford man to install the latest version.

@@aguiarjrdefreitas3238 yessir! It won’t affect your backup camera at all. And unfortunately, it does still need the cable connected in order to work. I know newer models are going wireless Apple CarPlay though haha

To be gentler with the grey connection piece because now I have a blue and yellow wire hanging out that I can’t get to seat in the connector. Any advice would be great
Oh no!!! My only recommendation on something like this would be to see how exactly the grey connector piece attaches to the yellow wire (like metal clamp/does it looked soldered). Then try to splice wire to get a little more of the inside wire showing and properly try to clamp wire again or get a solder gun out and reattach it that way? I would maybe youtube how to repair connector wires just to be sure as well lol. Wish you the best! 😁✌🏽
Hey man didnt work on f150 lariat 2016. I had sync 3 3.0 updated it to the latest version . But still doesn’t work. I also updated my phone. No change...
In my 2016 f150 I have sync 3 version 3.0. I installed the part you recommended and verified that it was an apple CarPlay compatible module. I then hooked up my phone with Siri on and the latest iPhone update and CarPlay still doesn’t show up on my screen. Any suggestions.
Hmm 🤔. I would look into updating the sync system itself then. Maybe if you have the latest version of sync on the infotainment system it will recognize the updated module.
I will say my sync 3 was sluggish to work with CarPlay before I updated the version then it was a lot better. But I hope this helps a bit! 😁✌🏽

I updated my radio on my 2016 via USB. It's on version 3. I can't get that icon to pop up for Apple car play or android auto when I hook my phone up. I also did this usb swap. Any help will be appreciated

As long as you have the bigger screen like mine(shown in video) once you update it to sync 3 it should definitely work. But it is also very important to make sure your screen is even compatible with apple carplay. If you have a smaller screen in the dash it will not work and you will have to upgrade the whole infotainment system first. Hope this helps out a bit😁✌🏽

Yes, unfortunately there is no wireless integration the stock infotainment center screen. However, it may be worth noting that the newer models are starting to go wireless for Apple CarPlay. Hope this helps😁✌🏽

Yes on this model unfortunately, you have to have the phone plugged in for it to work. 😁✌🏽

Nathan boe yes, the version helps with compatibility when using Apple CarPlay, that’s why it’s important to update your sync to the latest version if you have the big screen dash. The part is what provides you with the ability to have Apple CarPlay. If you don’t see an option for it going through your menus once your phone is plugged to that usb than you have to get the part. How do you upgrade to 3.0?
What was the part number of your old plug? My update from 1.0 to current has not failed but had not completed after 1.5 hours. I wonder if I need to install the new usb plug first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this is an old video but I just bought a 2016 F150 and found your video. I clicked the link in your description for the part and notice the end of the part number through the link is -F. On the package you are holding it has a -E. Do you know if these are interchangeable? Thanks!
I just noticed the same thing and started scrolling to see if anyone else had this issue. Mine still doesn't show carplay and I have SYNC 3 Version 3.0. I just read another post and did what he did. I plugged my iPhone in and the icon popped up. Good to go.

You may have to use a different part number to get the appropriate usb model for you Lincoln but use the same concept shown in the video. Of course, ensure you have the sync 3 platform or later in order for it to work. Please note though, I have not researched it entirely for your vehicle. I hope it helps you out a bit! 😁✌🏽
I have a 2015 F150 sync 2 with the big touch screen. If I swap the module only with it give me apple car play? If not what do you suggest?
That's a good question. I'm not entirely sure but I believe you may have to swap out the syn2 screen/infotainment assembly itself plus the module that has the usb ports. I believe syn2 infotainment is not compatible with applecarplay at all, regardless of the screen size(I could be wrong). I'm sorry I don't have more knowledge on this but I hope that this helps a bit.✌🏽
How do you know which module to get? I see you have the “e” but they have different ones. Are they all the same? I have Ford F-150 2016.
Im so sorry for the delayed response! I have been getting a lot of questions about the specific part number and while I always recommend dealership parts on this particular scenario, I have found the part at a decent price(now days) on amazon. I put the link in the description of the video in hopes to make it easier to buy the correct part. But to answer your question, the parts are not the same. It will have to be the exact one shown in video and attached to link in order for Apple CarPlay to work for you. I hope this helps, again, my apologies for not seeing this before. I bought the module today. At first it did not do anything. I tried to update to sync 3.0 but it wouldn’t update thru WiFi. So I turned the truck off and when I turned it back on and plugged my phone in it went straight to apple play! Thx for the vid.

Yes, unfortunately your iphone has to be plugged in and won't work over bluetooth. I wish it did!

Yes. I would still do a little research before pulling the trigger on it though. I believe by upgrading the screen they come with the module that provides sync 3 or higher but before purchasing make sure thats true. Hope this helps!✌🏽😁

I swapped mine out but my 2016 F 150 lariat FX4 takes a long time to connect to my phone and there’s a lot of hesitation in the functionality. If I push microphone to do dictation it takes me sometimes 30 seconds for the CarPlay to respond. A lot of delay. Almost not worth it. Any ideas?i
Sorry to hear the delay and hesitation of the features. If it is continuing to do that I would recommend updating your sync version. You can do this by either going to a dealer or using a usb drive (I believe capable of holding 5gb or something like that) and self downloading the newer version from ford owners.com.
Now my memory is foggy on the website and specific memory of the usb drive that can be used so please do your research but I believe this will definitely fix your issues. Hope this helps you out a bit! 😁✌🏽
