    The difference between the decibel levels is not that big, but remember that this is an exponential scale, so as the guys said, it was hitting their ears hard.

      As I recall, every 10 decibels increase is double the sound pressure level.
      At idle, a typical jet engine is about 120 decibels.

      Jets, drums (live music) and power tools have wrecked my hearing.

    For every 3 decibel increase, its actually double the sound level or volume. So 115 to 129 (14db higher) is roughly 5 times louder than the original car horn. (Double it aprox 5 times)

    • @alexanderthomas2660
      @alexanderthomas2660 Рік тому +5

      Every time a decibel meter appears in a video, a comment like this is amongst the top ranked comments, and it almost always contains the same mistake.
      The sound is not “5 times louder.” Yes, the _amplitude_ of the sound is a factor 5 larger (actually probably not, because of how the dB(A) scale works, but as a rough approximation this is OK). But, our ears do not perceive linear amplitude. They also perceive loudness in a logarithmic manner, which is the whole reason why logarithmic decibel scales are always used to measure sound levels, with a certain frequency weighting to mimic the sensitivity of the average human ear.
      Therefore in theory, 129dB(A) would be perceived roughly 12% louder than 115dB(A) but that is also an utterly dodgy statement because we're around the pain threshold of 120dB(A) here, and the perception of pain is not logarithmic (and not linear either). The only thing dB(A) levels above 100 are truly useful for, is to quantify how quickly permanent hearing damage will occur.

And to tell the truth the absolute SPL that microphone can measure is around 130db so it shows the maximum it can handle, the horn should have been way louder in such a close distance plus the amplification of the floor and space surrounding it.
