- Just because something is free, doesn't mean you can use it for whatever you like! This video gives advice for making sure you have the rights to use the images, icons and fonts you find online in your work. Please remember to subscribe bit.ly/1aE5UOT
You've probably seen terms like 'public domain' and 'creative commons' around the internet before. This video explains how copyright works for assets you may want to use in your design projects, and tells you how to figure out if you have the rights to use an asset you've found. I hope you find it useful! If you have any questions or if there's anything I explained too quickly/not well enough, please feel free to ask in the comments below.

"Ignorance is no excuse to break copyright laws" - well said!
glad you agree! 🙌
I think people should have the common sense to not copy. What is a good way to embed this in the minds of those who plagiarize or make derivative designs?
yeah screw all those people making mistakes! the bastards!
indeed!
That google tip alone deserved a thumbs up, thanks!
Idk if you're gonna see this but would the character Sonic or shadow be copyrighted or am I ok to use it even if I make the design
I'm a teacher looking for quick, easy to understand summaries of these topics for my homebound students during the pandemic. This is one of the best I've found. Brief. Thorough. Accurate. Relevant. Accessible. Great job.
Glad it was helpful! say hi to your students from me :)
Hi i have a question. I've been wondering if it is considered a copyrighted material, i used my own pictures and i edit it in a collage app and i want to submit it as an artwork for a contest, is it a copyrighted material? Thank you and pls help
I want to use tweety bird material from the 80’s on my diy will that be a problem? I want to use material that I bought from a thrift store and from jo Ann fabrics videos as well in the future but I don’t want to cross any lines
🙏 Thank You So Much Teacher CharliMarie for the Design & Copyright tutorial! Stay Safe! 🌷🌿
Hi, thanks for the helpful vid! I have a question. What about using an image from IG? I make paintings and drawing of IG models and was wondering how legal issues apply.
So it’s legal to use google pictures if I pick labeled usage right which means I have the right to use it correct ?
Great info and love that it's short and sweet and to the point. Also, when using Bing, you can filter by clicking on the "filter" icon in the upper right and then clicking the drop down for "license"
Great tip!!
never thought about it that way! another great vid! :)
+CullanAndTravis thanks Cullan! Glad I could make you think :)
Would it be possible to include your UA-cam link in the online college class I teach (with credit of course)? It would accompany some discussion questions about copyright. If not, I totally understand.
Hey, i hired a designer for a print on demand for products designs. which sites can i use pictures, vectors for this purpose? also about the fonts thing, how do you check it? which sites to you reccomend?
im actually loving your channel because its all so useful
+Oli Quinn awesome to hear it Oli!
I am trying to find out I’d I took a picture of a car, airplane or a building for instance and their logo is on it if it’s against the law to draw or paint that picture exactly. Second question what if the picture is of a business no longer exists like it was swallowed up in a merger?
There is any google service where we can ask them someone is using our design?
Hi, there. Really appreciate that for the info, and I have some questions have been bothering me sometime so I hope you could help me if you can.
So I've involved in infringement of copyright lately, it's happen because that I'm selling a design that I learned from a youtube tutorial video. So actually, can I sell design and make money with something that I learned from internet?
What if i make and sell a font to a dozen people and and then i happen to see it all over the Internet few years later. Given that some fonts very similar and thrn created to outlines, my question is how can I be sure that's my fonts and how can o take action of people stealing my fonts. I feel this will be a very long journey clamping everyone down stealing my work.
I realize on Fiverr, many logo designers do not include copyrights in their packages? Why is that? I asked a designer for the additional commercial use rights for the logo and they were not able to provide it.
Hi, i just saw in instagram about font copyright, i am planning to start my Etsy shop selling handmade stickers fridge magnets tote bags, prints with bible verses quotes/scriptures. The thing is I bought it already made for me. I don't know what to do. i don't have any knowledge/idea about the font/image/design copyright law please help, thank you so much.
I just started my channel. This was super helpful, thanks 😊
Charlie....another great video...
Really enlightening.. because I really did not know some information which you provided here....
Thank you..
+Twinkle Jumani glad you found it useful!
Can we use free elements for t shirt design..??
Thanks! (your eyebrows are perfect by the way :)
+James M shucks! Haha
Thanks Charli! I really appreciate the succinct shorter videos where I can take in the information and remember it easier
(Not saying I don't like the long ones too, they're brilliant too - appropriate length for appropriate content)
+Dodi Azmi glad you think so Dodi! Totally agree with you that a video should only be as long as it needs to be.
If I'm wanting to sell an art work that I created with a digital app, such as Fresh Paint. Is it legal or does the application have rights somehow?
as long as you didn't copy the art from anywhere I would say its legal! I'm not a lawyer though :)
What would be a case if we use one of these public domain image to design a website and later on we find it someone else is using the same image in their website and they have copyrighted the whole website including the content , will there be copyright issue ?
They can’t copyright something that’s in the public domain as far as I’m aware.
Aaah this is really useful. Even if I don't do a whole lot of design work, I do work with images and fonts so that's cleared a lot of questions up! :)
+Shu glad I could help!
Hi✌
1. Am i allowed to upload my screen record ( of my art/drawing/editing) using (Picsart, Snapseed, Canva/more) on UA-cam? Do i need to give attribution?
If it’s your art that you created yourself I don’t believe so!
@@charlimarieTV
1. So, if its my artwork, i do not need to give attribution to the apps that i used?
2. How if i use, "in app free presets" such as (sticker, templates, patterns, designs, filters). Do i need to give attributtion to those apps that i used?
if I buy desk top licence on creative market can I use those fonts on tshirts or end products ? thanks
i have a feeling licenses on creative market are commercial by default, so probably? But read the license info to check!
I want to start my portfolio website but I only have work that I have done in school. Can I post those projects on an online portfolio even though I dont know if I have rights for some of the assets I used?
+marceguapacha technically no, but I'd say it depends on how much the illegal assets feature in your work!
What about using Posters of films and shows?
I have a question.
Let's just says, I saw this designer on youtube designing a movie poster example ( marvel ) but this designer use the photo of one of the character from the marvel and create an entire movie poster. Does it mean this designer commit copyright infrigment?
I don't know anything about copyright and legal stuff so I am a little scared of copyright infrigment.
Yep! Unless you have licensed the photo you are reaching copyright. You’re also using a character someone else created, so that’s their intellectual property, people breach copyright like this a lot. But that doesn’t make it legal.
Can I make the same font, which was used in movies from 60s,70s and 80s?
it depends on if the copyright still exists on that font!
How can I check it? :D
Hello +CharliMarieTV, great topic. I have a question and maybe you can help. If i drawa new image based on a movie, show or videogame and sell that image there is no copyright infringement right? But if i put the name of the movie on the image that i created there is an copyright infringement because of the name?
+rui pinheiro good question! Yes I believe it would be. So as long as you're just loosely inspired and don't use actual assets imagery or names from the movie you'll be okay :)
Thank you for reply and to clarify my doubts CharliMarieTV
Can idea be copyright?
When you sell a client a logo you designed, what files do you give them? Do you give them the AI file with all the layers to your work, or do you give them a compressed file?
+Luis Montoya good question! It depends on what you've agreed, but generally a client will need a vector version of their logo. So you give them an eps. Which is editable, yes.
Thank you :)
i know its a stupid question to ask but
2 years ago i wantd to make a copyright localy for a 2 projects that i made, a short animated serise, and a short game ,
but thy told me that thy dont have this kind of stuffs, because wher i live ther are know game makers and animation makers,
so i was thinking is ther is another way to do this online !!! ?
i don't know sorry!
hi
May i ask your opinion to if is legal to make clothes using pixabay for example
who write this: CC0 Public Domain you can use it for commercial use .
thank you in advance
when it comes to copyright it's not about opinions, it's about the law! :) Public domain means you can use it for whatever you like.
Thank you for your answer ,you help me a lot because i have a project and i want to be clear with the law :)
When it says you need to give credit, what exactly do they mean? How would I do that in print vs. web, etc? Thanks! So very helpful!
+parejeda great question! Generally you need to state who the creator is and link to their site, and often the rules are that you must link to the Creative Commons license too.
Thanks! Does this mean that using the assets for print things like flyers or posters is a bad idea since you can't link to anything?
NOW I'm confused, guide about using font in Logo, we can use it without license also can tweek a little?
Did you pay for a commercial licence to the font? You’ll need it if you’re going to use it for a logo for a business. And check the license allows for that tweaking (most do!)
I sometimes take an icon from a site and i to tweak it to not look like the ofiginal. Is that ok?
Thanks Charli for this video, it was very helpful :)
Hi Charli!
I'm looking into doing 'Horror T-Shirts!' Do you know if there is away around doing 'T-Shirts' based around 'Famous Horror Movies?'x
+Wayne Dev the designs couldn't have any imagery or trademarked names/logos from the movies in them, but you could be inspired by them for your designs!
Thanks!x
Thank you so much for the information! I'm going to be making an online portfolio and I have some projects I'd done for classes that I'm going to include. Since this will be a public portfolio, do I need to make sure that every piece I include only used fonts that are free for commercial use? Thank you!
will you be doing freelance work? or will your portfolio be used to get a full time job. it's safest to use a font you have a commercial license for, but if it's a personal site and you won't be using it to get clients i suppose it could technically just need a personal license. I'm not a lawyer or a copyright expert though!
@@charlimarieTV Thank you for the reply!! Hmm ok I think I'd need commercial licenses then since I'll be using my portfolio to apply for work 😅
What if i made my own tee shirts that have my utube channel printed on it but i dont ever sale them is this legal ?
If you own the rights to your own channel branding then you can do whatever you like with it. If you’re talking about using the UA-cam logo, consult UA-cam’s brand guidelines for info on how you’re allowed to use it.
@@charlimarieTV ok i better check into all this somehow
thank you!! if you can; i need to know about copyright and patent right law of machines?
You’ll have to consult a legal professional who specialises in that I’m afraid!
Its ilegal method to copyright our designs all over the world ..?
Very nice points!
Hi, thank you for the video. If it is going to be used for a portfolio, it is not considered commercial, right? or am I wrong?
+Me I think that if it's just your personal portfolio that's counted as personal use, since you're not selling the work or directly profiting from it :)
Thank you for responding :)
is their a good site to find these fonts wich are free to use?
dafont.com has several fonts that are free for personal use or available for commercial use with a donation to the person who made the font.
charliMarieTV Is there a way to find out if a quote I want to use has a copyright (Quotes which are not from books but from interviews/public speech). Is there are a way to find out if there is a copyright on person's name/pic and if that can be used against the quote.
Eg; If I want to use a quote from Christopher Hitchens - there might be a copyright but I see 100s of brands using name and pic in their posters and t-shirts.
Anyone who has information on this may please reply.
Thank You.
+Wandering Mind 25-8 I don't know the law around this but I would avoid anything that means you're making a profit from words someone else said/wrote and especially using a photo of them.
Wandering Mind 25-8 every quote is copyrighted?
and on every picture of a person is copyright.
I Like the length and speed of you're video! Great job and good luck with your chanel!!
Thanks so much! :)
So if I use a font on clothes but change the font up I’d that still deemed as copyright
it depends if you illegally acquired that font or if you have a commercial license for it.
hello great video, one confusing question, what if i use a free for personal use font on the net on a quote on social media for advertising purposes only for example? thank you.
if you're using it for advertising purposes then that counts as commercial use I'm afraid!
Thank you. for the heads up. big help!
i will paint apples in all style, and just daily objects, anime them all and then just go after people , it dose not work that way. It is usually a tactic , just because you can sue dose not mean you will win period. Zara and many bigger company copies the exact same thing and nothing happens. I always wonder what about the tree illustration I did when i was 6 year old? so many people draw the same thing LOL
does this apply to youtube videos as well or they could fall under fair use?
+Zen Advent UA-cam videos are still something someone else has created! I think there's something in fair use about commentary? But I don't know the law well enough to advise sorry.
I just only want to know I only use certain fonts just as title and credits on my video so I am just wondering if it I will be in trouble for just only using it like a few seconds and using the style in a thumbnail
+Zen Advent oh right! Yep you must have the rights to use those fonts. So you can use only fonts that you've purchased a license for, or that come with a free license. If you're not sure, Google the font name and find the designer who made it. Sometimes people will make fonts available to download for free illegally. So just because you got it free doesn't mean you can use it. You must read the license. Hope that makes sense!
CharlieMarieTV Hi, for UA-cam thumbnails do you need a commercial use license since UA-cam videos are almost always monetized? Thank you 🙏🙂
Yep! If you’re monetising the video you’d need to ensure you have the rights to earn money from any imagery or fonts used within the video or thumbnail
CharliMarieTV thank you for answering. What if your video editor and thumbnail editor already have fonts included in their tool menu are those ok to use?
I absolutely love all your videos especially since I've hit a plateau in my journey with design. You are so inspiring. I wanted to know with selling t shirts that your printed on, if that would be illegal since you are selling t-shirts that other companies made. For example) if i buy white t-shirts from american eagle and then sell them on my own site, can i get sued? Also, in order to make a shirt where I can put my own tag on it, do i have to make my own t-shirt because it seems wrong to (for example) cut off american eagles tag and put my own after i screen print the design. Please let me know. So two part question, is it illegal to sell shirts you bought from other companies with your own designs on it? And, what does it take to be able to put your own tag on a shirt, is it illegal to put it on another brand's shirt? XOXOXO
Thank you
rather than using american eagle i suggest using a blank tshirt brand. these brands are designed specifically to be sold to people who will print their own designs on them and put their own tags on!
That's so cool! Thank you for letting me know. Can you give me an example of a brand like that, that i can use, or a couple brands? I'm new to this and am not really familiar with what it means for a brand to be a 'blank t-shirt brand'?
I replied to one of your replies but not sure if you got it! What you said to me was "rather than using american eagle i suggest using a blank tshirt brand. these brands are designed specifically to be sold to people who will print their own designs on them and put their own tags on!"
My question that was, "Can you give me an example of a brand like that, that i can use, or a couple brands? I'm new to this and am not really familiar with what it means for a brand to be a 'blank t-shirt brand'?"
Thank you, you are super helpful and I appreciate all of your information
Hi! I suggest googling 'wholesale blank tshirts' or 'blank tshirts to print on' and you'll see a bunch of different brands. Some examples you'll likely see are Gildan, American Apparel, Fruit of the Loom etc, but different brands will be available depending on where in the world you live! I hope that helps :)
CharliMarieTV thank you!
Great video! What about assigning rights to our own work? Also could you talk more about design contracts for freelancers. How do freelance designers usually sell their work? For example a logo design or website design. Also incase of logos, the usage rights, etc. Thank you :)
yeah i definitely want to make more videos on this topic!
Of course my work is legal I make my own fonts and all my vector elements and icons but how do I actually copyright my work so people can't steal my work or use it in a movie or try to steal it without my permission
You are amazing. Love your work.
thanks John!
hey charlie . what's logo website at ( 1:00 ) ?
thats the Noun Project :)
thank you
Dear admin, please let me know how to attribute to author if we are using his art in our logo design?
You need to get permission for the artist first.
Very interesting video !!!
But i still have question regarding the parameters of copyright and
patent process.
I am a leather jacket manufacturer and have my own jacket factory but i
am really confused regarding the jacket styles.
For example my biker leather jacket design looks same as 100s of other
biker jackets from different companies. So my question is: Can a generic
deisgn be patented of copyrighted. For example evry t-shirt in the
world has a round neck deisgn, so can a company go and get a patent for
round neck design to stop other companies to manufacture round neck
t-shirts? Please note im not taking about the brand name or any specific
pattern or deisgn on the t-shirt but i am taking about the basic design
in clothing.
I get inspiration from a lot of online leather jackets and i want to
make the same designs in my factory but obviously without the pattern or
label of the company from whose website i am getting the design ideas.
Thank you in advance
+Mudassir Zafar I'm a graphic and web designer so I don't know anything about fashion design sorry! I suggest you consult a copyrights lawyer.
Hi, this is the first video I've seen on your channel and instantly subscribed. Hope you see this and are able to help give me some advise. I am not entirely sure if this will be down your lane though.
I am currently now having some doubts about trying to copyright or patent my friend and I furniture designs. The further I read into it the more doubts about it being useful arise. We don't have massive amounts of cash and connections to the best manufactures nor the ability to get them into stores at snap of a finger. We are highly confident that our work will be loved and ultimately run across "that someone" that will steal it before we are able to make all our moves. Design them, get them built by professionals, get them into our favorite blogs/magazine and stores kind of moves.
So, there is one design we are most protective about that is our main concern. We see it as our baby, we see it as turning into an iconic piece and we see it as being the face of our company. It is a coffee table or even a place to throw laundry on as far as function goes. The shape of it is what's special to us. The piece was built off our love for fashion and we did draw some inspiration from Japanese culture when we visited.
What steps can we take to make sure this table design is not stolen and presented as someone else's? Would a patent along with copyright really help at all?
The table will be a solid color and really has no special functions
Sorry I don’t know much about getting things copyrighted, only about how to avoid breaching someone else’s copyright!
Is this right place tell
Great video Chrali!
+Keanu George glad you liked it Keanu!
Can you use phrases or lyrics from songs to put on shirts?
I'd avoid it! the band could claim copyright on them and sue you. This is what happened to a lot of Etsy sellers who used Taylor Swift lyrics!
Thanks, What about a couple words like "Im all the way up" It's just a phrase, but it's also in a song...so what do you think?
it depends on if the way you're marketing it has a connection to the band I guess? But honestly I can't really give legal advice on this as I have no training in legal matters!
I feel you, thanks for the advice! Keep it up.
Elijah X. Media all the way up is a phrase, you could market it in the sense of saying it for the phrase if someone comes to you saying oh they copied the song..just say umm no it was a phrase and that band doesn't own American English words
Can I just say you are amazing.
Thank you very much Charlie!
+Marcial Heredia you're welcome!
CharliMarieTV I was the guy who asked you to talk about this and I was waiting since then! ... ;)
All this copy rights stuff is making me not wanna do my business anymore it’s annoying to know there’s very little I can do to protect my self but to pay the government -.-
don't let it stop you from creating! :)
Can I use anime characters to make profit?
Did you create the characters? If not do you have permission from the people who did?
Can I use images or pictures from Pinterest?
Nope! Not unless the original creator of the image has deemed it creative commons or copyright-free explicitly.
I was so excited when I bought a lot of fonts from this type foundry then it says that I can't use the fonts in a video and I need a special license for that with extra costs. DAMMIT!
+Newecreator dang it! How annoying to find out after!
CharliMarieTV Well at least I have a lot of fonts ready to be on my videos anyway.
Excellent video!
+Simon Harper thanks Simon!
I liked u very much and ur voice is so good!
I really enjoyed this. I design my own digital book covers for my wattpad stories. It's great to know what I can and can't use from google.
+AngelsLieToKeepCtrl glad I could help :)
yes do a video on that!
+Great Equalizer I will I promise!
Nice video. I a blogger and I think everyone should see this video. It will come in handy when we add to our work.
You are actually so lucky that you got selected for the UA-cam next up!
+Jay Odell it was such an amazing experience!
I'm sure it was! Maybe I will get the opportunity one day🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks...
Love the videos! If you use icons in a website you make, how should it be market? Can you write it in the code?
+Øyvind Skjelstad usually you have to put it in the footer or on a resources page
So if do a site dor a client, it may be a bit complicated ... ?
Yeah I agree this is a challenge. That said, anyone who actually cares enough to track you down for using a single iconfont will probably be wanted to read the code.
Thanks
how to register my logos, designs etc ?
that will depend on the country you live in!
Im from India...Cn u plz hlp me providng some dtls?
I'm not from india so I know nothing about how copyright works there. You'll have to do your own research on it!
okkkk thnk you
thank you
I love your accent! ♥__♥
I can't understand what you are talking but I like to listen it
nice information
Thanks for the info! P.S. You have beautiful eyes.
you're welcome!
What about a picture of a celebrity
Did you take it yourself? Is it available under a Creative Commons license? Or did you pay to license the picture from the photographer/media house? If not, then nope. Still illegal.
Good vid, ignorance is a big reason for it so it's nice info to touch on...
+Corey Byas thanks! Wanted to do my bit to spread the word :)
*NOTICE THERE'S ONLY COMMON SENSE AND NO SOLUTION WHERE TO FIND THE ANSWERS. -_-*
You’d be surprised at how many people don’t follow this common sense! If you have a specific question about copyright and your situation, your best bet is to consult a lawyer or copyright expert.
@@charlimarieTV Alright, UNcommon sense since today's loaded with people from the film Idiocracy. lol smh So, here's my question if you can answer it. Are the fonts we use that come with Microsoft Windows products commercial-free to use aka to make designs with and profit from aka shirts, etc etc? Example would be Times New Roman. Can we use this w/o a lawsuit in our work?
Lawyers will likely say the same shit that you mention. My question is, is there a website that actually does homework for us about which fonts are free for commercial use? THAT WOULD BE NICE.
Lastly, what if we distort the fonts enough?
Free commercial use is what you need in order to use an image, font, icon etc.. FREELY. Most of the stuff on the internet are Free FOR PERSONAL USE.. but people don't read the PERSONAL USE thing, they just see the the word FREE and boom ...
exactly!
think I'm in trouble
Another Kiwi heheheheeheeeeeeeeee LOVE IT
NZers represent!
after watching this video i guess every file in my PC is copyrighted lol
