    Looks very nice but it’s a shame Canyon doesn’t offer fully integrated cockpits where all cables can be routed inside. I own a Wilier Cento NDR with disc brakes and the handlebar is 100% cable free. It’s so nice!

    Thx for uploading, so the Lightweigt option would be an CH H18 handlebar with aluminium stem and the aero one of the H31-36 options.

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, probably. It depends also of the size of the aerocockpit or the handlebar + stem combination. Can't talk about the H18 or H31 but the H36 feels far more rigid than the previous setup without compromise confort and think this are important points to consider. At the end, both keeps the same angle (even when H36 looks more negative/agresive angle, is the same as V13), so the small changes are in the drops and the flatten profile of the handlebar that slightly reduce the overall height of the handlebar and the stem in clamp bolts area arround 1cm.

  • @baychev
    @baychev 4 роки тому +1

    Removing the spacers on the steering tube would have made you more aero than the new cockpit.

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  4 роки тому +2

      baychev probably, and less comfortable too. When I changed the cockpit I never thought on aerodynamic gains. Canyon claims that the H36 offers an efficiency of 5W at 40kph in terms of aerodynamic improvement but I think that for my ride style and usage I found the stiffness and confort of the wider handlebar are more valuable improvements than the aerodynamics.

    Hi, if you're still reading the comments:
    I just bought a used Canyon Ultimate off someone, and the out-front mount of the H36 is chronically loose. The bolts tighten up while there is still wiggle room (1-2mm) for the plastic cover & outfront mount. Am I missing a layer of some kind? Currently I just have the two long screws through the plastic cable cover and the out-front mount. I cannot find a manual or anything online so far. I could just fill the wiggle room up with some foam but I find it very odd, so I wanted to check. If you know more, I'd love to hear it!

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  3 роки тому

      Hi!,
      The cockpit has a space intended for this purposes and the central cap below of the handlebar has a flexible part the you can carefully pull down to expose a little the charge unit and connect the cable. It's a little tricky but not a big deal, just be carefull of not broke that little and flexbible notch. Once cable is connected the cable itself keeps all in place, when you disconnect the cable, all remains hide again.

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  2 роки тому

      Cut is not necessary you can put the spacer over/under the aerocockpit but a caveat: as far as I remember, the aerocockpit height is lower than V13 stem, it means if you keep the steer tube length, you must check when you mount everything that there is no gaps between the spacers/top cap/ aerocockpit/frame.

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  4 роки тому +2

      Maverick TechReview Hi! I think Canyon only manufactures stem with +/- 6 degrees, so the options would be to look for another brand with a greater inclination, use all spacers or even use a slightly shorter stem to push the body back a little, but the latter would have an impact on the bike fit so I do not think it is the most recommended. Keep in mind that it is mainly a matter of bike frame geometry, the Ultimate although has a slightly more relaxed posture than the Aeroad, maintains features designed for competition, which creates a more aggressive posture. As an example of this think that the Endurace uses stem of +/- 6 degrees too, what creates the most relaxed posture for long rides is its geometry a little more relaxed than the Ultimate.

    Thanks for this.
    Could you advise on the actual effective stem length on the H36 cockpit (from centre bolt)? I've read some people say they measure up longer than what Canyon advertise, e.g., the 100mm is more like 115mm etc...would help me decide which size to order!

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  4 роки тому +2

      blablablamyname My short answer is: measure what Canyon indicates, in this case 100mm. What I think happens and confuses people is that, right in the center, the handlebar looks wider, so it seems that the center of the handlebar is further forward and for that reason people consider that the stem is longer than the indicated, but at the extremes, where the hands are actually placed, it is less wide and from the center of the handlebar to the center of the bolt it measures 100mm (the measurement indicated in this case). You can ask Canyon but what I could see the measurement is correct. The fact that the handlebar is not a cylinder and the width is variable along the handlebar implies that the way to measure the stem is not as straight forward as a conventional handlebar.

    • @StevenMolina

      I think it depends of your bike fit configuration, maybe better ask to a bike fitter. As an starting point, check the bike size charts in Canyon ‘s website, there you can see the stem size according to frame size. I think a combination of Canyon website information and bike fitter advice is the best.

      Алексей Тимоня Hi! Maybe, it depends how long the cables are to be able to move the shifters easy and safely without pulling the cables. Personally I think could be a mess have shifters and cables hanging out there, holding the fork and trying to install the aerocockpit all at the same time.

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! It’s hard to say because a never see personally a H31 handlebar to say if it has different measurements to H36 or H31. Are you installing it on an Ultimate? The H11-H36 spacer kit is indicated for Aeroad, whereas H31 for Ultimate and Endurance. My Aero spacer kit is indicated as H31, as you can see the bolt in transition plate is behind, pointing to the saddle, the H31-H36 you can see in pictures that the bolt is lateral. The only thing I can guess is transition plate or the integrated stem is lower so, the total height of the aerocockpit with all the spacers installed is lower than your previous setup with H31. I recommend you check first if the kit is the indicated with Canyon service, if everything is ok, measure the height of stem and the transition plate (spacers has standard height) to find the difference. If occurs that is lower, you have two options: add an spacers to fill the gap or cut the fork.

      It’s worth for me. I like how it looks and like the more stiffness feeling it gives. The flat top of the aerocockpit is comfortable too. I don’t have comparable power data with similar testing conditions to talk properly about aerodynamic gains compared with previous setup but I think even with the specifications of Canyon the gains are marginals.

      @@henrygascon9106 yeah, bike fit should be priority. That said, you can keep your stem length and handlebar width of your previous setup choosing the the aerocockpit with the same measures and dont affect your bike fit, the stem angle is the same of previous setup (+°6 angle). Hi, thanks for the video. I’m upgrading my Endurance with the H31. One question about your upgrade: did you replace the wedge expander with the one shipped in the upgrade kit? And can you tell what the three little O-rings are meant for? Unfortunately Canyon doesn’t provide proper documentation. :-(

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  4 роки тому +2

      Christoph Lieck Hi! Yeah, the documentation is not much useful. I replaced the wedge expander. I cut my fork tube so, I must change de position of the wedge expander so, I used the new one. The 3 little o-ring provided are used to seal and create a “soft compression” for the top cap of the stem so, in order to avoid sweat into the stem and protecting the top cap of be broken I sort the items like: bolt/top cap/ o-ring/plastic tube /o-ring/o-ring. I followed the order of the item guided by the previous configuration of my V13 stem. I hope my explanation helps you!

      @@StevenMolina HI there, how/why did you have to cut the fork tube? Is the Endurace too long for Aero Cockpit?

    • @StevenMolina
      @StevenMolina  4 роки тому

      @@SuperSmithy1985 Hi! I can’t talk about the Endurace but can talk about this Ultimate. This aerocockpit, in the area where the bolts are located is slightly lower than the V13 (about 3-5mm), the spacers and transitions plate are the same height so, when yo put all the spacers and the transition plate, you will see that the fork tube stands out a little bit. If you keep the things on this way the top cap don’t sits correctly over the stem and you will not be able to compress the bearings and adjust the things properly. In my case, now that I had to cut the fork tube, I put off 1 spacer (10mm) based on my bike fit setup and kept the others just in case. Thats the reason my top cap is flat over the stem, some people keeps all the spacers and put the spacers over the stem but personally I don’t like it. Finally, I cut it with a normal saw with fine teeth. Parktools sells specific saw for cutting carbon fibre but I did no have any problem or damage cutting with a normal one. You can find plenty of tutorials how to cut a fork securely. Always measure twice before cut.

      @StevenMolina  4 роки тому

      Stefan Thomson Yeah, maybe the part when I tighted the bolts is not very explanatory. The cap bolt depends of the adjust of the bearings in the headtube to avoid rocking in the fork, but around 2-3Nm did the job. Then, the bolts in the stem just require 5Nm indicated in the stem, is recommended start from 1Nm, and alternate the bolts, never put all the 5Nm in just one bolt at the time. When this bolds are in place with the specific torque you can tight the bolt in the spacers/transition plate, this is just for avoiding that the fork falls when you remove the aerocockpit, so, just require 1Nm. Thanks for your comment and sorry, I don’t see it till now.
