My jaw dropped when you mentioned petite men. As a 28-year-old man who's 5'4" with a 26" hip, 28" inseam, and 13" neck (and shoe size 6 mens), it often feels like no one would ever even think to cater to people like me. I'm just lucky to have a boyfriend who understands, as it's just as rare to find clothes made for someone with a 50" waist. We just dream of the day an "inclusive sizing" brand fits us both...

My friend has the same exact issue. Its absurd to be unable to find basics to purchase. Not everyone has the funds to drop on a custom wardrobe (tbh everyone should but that's a different conversation) and he gets SO frustrated by the very idea of shopping for clothes and the lack of inclusivity.
It's nuts because I'm in fashion and when I was younger I had NO conception of how inclusive clothing was. I just assumed that there was a business to cater to everyone- silly silly me.

Excellent video full of great information! Somewhere along the way we all bought the idea that clothes should fit right off the rack when in reality because bodies are diverse in measurements alterations are part of life. Thank you Zoe Hong for sharing such crucial and important information in this wonderful channel of yours, especially for the new breed of Designers that will lead the future and make it better over all!

They should simply provide the B W H and length measurements of the finished product and let consumers decide. Sizing was made to simplify fit for consumers but it ends up being more confusing.
I prefer the online shops that have detailed measurements of the finished product.

This! And I've seen it before, it exists! There used to be a shop in my city that sold French "Walmart" type merchandise and the clothing had tags with little silhouettes and B/W/H. I kept a tag for the longest bc I loved that so much. If I had a brand, I would totally do this!

I might be cynical but I think most brands will not want to do this because that makes it easier for the customer to decide to *not* buy something. When people touch items and especially try them on (at home after ordering or in store) they are more likely to see them as their own already and want to pay for them, and if the tag says "M" it's quite easy to think "I've fit into that size before/I bet I could", but if it says W 74cm (smaller M) and you know you have a waist 78 (larger M)-81cm(smaller L), you wont even bother. This means a lot less "but it was on sale" and other mistake purchases, which means fewer items sold for the big brands.

I tend to fall in the midsize or smallest plus size range. When ever I go shopping, no matter the store, most things that I like only have the very smallest and super largest sizes available. I assume this is due to whoever is doing the buying, but I wonder if that is influenced by what the brands have available?
To me, it shows that most people shopping there are in the midsize range. I always wonder why they don’t buy more product in those sizes?
Just had to get that off my chest, I know that’s really not your focus, lol

My larger customers are frequently very frustrated that waists and hips are excessively graded up, leaving the garments essentially shapeless. Means more business for me but it really makes the fashion shopping experience very sad and expensive for them. 😔

I’m going to attempt to upcycle vintage fashions for plus size women. I’ve noticed most vintage pieces I thrift or see online for sale are never in my size or larger. Obviously vintage clothes were sized smaller since people were smaller. But I feel like there’s a market for vintage plus size and all it’s going to take it upsizing some small clothes. I do this with jeans, taking jeans several sizes two small and combining them to create those trendy jeans you see all the time 🤗.

As someone old enough to remember when it was hard to find women's clothing above a size 12, the fact that a size 14 or 16 is now considered "mid sized" and are offered by many labels is mind-blowing. I never even heard of "mid sized" until recently; that's how I stumbled onto this video: I was trying to find out what it was.

@@zoehongteaches just finished watching and i learned sooo much. You're one of the geatest teachers I've had, ever. I got into garment making because very few people i know can get good clothes off the rack. Your teaching, across the spectrum not just fit, helps me analyze how to customize clothes for my clients. I don't get a a lot of customers because as an economist in a different life, i value the work and expertise I've been gaining differently. Ergo, I'm viewed as expensive; a hard sell in Asia (I'm in the Philippines) where u can get a dress or a polo shirt for $2.

Size isn't important, just keep it consistent and keep everything landscape or portrait. Get one of those books where you slide your artwork into plastic sleeves for protection. Double check portfolio requirements at each school you want to apply to because they're all different.
