I don’t even want to go into fashion, I’m just here because I find this stuff super duper interesting (and I love drawing, and want to add some fashion to my work), but I still learn so much and it’s a really fascinating and well made video! Thanks Professor Hong!!
When I was in fashion school, I don’t recall doing this exercise or discussing the different price points. Heck, we barely touched on the design seasons or how they were changing (I was in school about 20 years ago.) I swear, the longer I’m out of school, the more knowledge I find missing from my “education.” It’s really hard to ask questions when you have no idea what you should be asking. Thank you for shedding some light on the business of being an apparel designer.
I was in fashion school about 5 years and i dont remember designing for different price points either. More teachers should use this this concept. Most students design within the contemporary range and up when not everyone is going to end up there
Fashion is in the trade category. Degree in it is a joke. Collage is good for anything with strict rules that need to be adhered to, ex medical, engineering, law. If you're in school for fashion and using text material, by the time its printed, its already irrelevant. If you want to do fashion, do business, then apprentice under someone so you have hands on experience and network network network. Sorry you wasted time
AMEN to shopping for fabric and notions in order to get a feeling for why some garments are so expensive. I sew for myself and people are always shocked that a dress I make myself ends up costing the same or more than a store bought one (unless I get REALLY lucky with a bargain). Great fabric is freaking expensive.
also working in a creative industry, not fashion tho, but just came back from work exhausted from a long back and forth call 'how to construct this product cheaper and cheaper and cheaper'.... interesting to know that other creative industries also have a similar experience
This is literally not only one of the most informative fashion design videos I've ever watched, but also probably the one that teaches me the most valuable information - my dream is to create a brand with various lines at various price points (like the Ralph Lauren example you mentioned) and I had literally no idea about how I would do that until this video! I'm so excited to get designing and use what you've taught me, and also the designs you draw in this video were BEAUTIFUL
Just want to say 2 thing. The blouse from the begging is absolutely beautiful. Love the designe. Also thank u for explaining that kind of stuff in way easy to understand ^^
I'm designing a collection as a collaboration. I was worried about the price point being too high. Now I realize that I have more design freedom than I thought.
The very last jacket being labeled couture insanity, I love it. 😂 It's always so interesting hearing what you have to say about multiple ways to do something. Especially bc it's so easy to think that something should be a certain specific way, but I guess that's bc we're so used to seeing a finished final product and not the process of how it got there. It also always fascinates me how you can so accurately draw lines SO close together without overlapping. Skills.
Love this comprehensive look at fashion categories and your perspective. I would submit there's an additional fashion category between "Luxury" like Gucci and LV to "Haute Couture" lines of designer fashion houses: "High Fashion". This is what Akris for instance attempts and the ready to wear lines from Chanel and Valentino. While Gucci and LV sell the aesthetic of luxury and often at the price point, it's hardly luxury among those in high fashion and the consumers thereof. Their leather goods are well marketed but often fake; their fabrics are conservative and saleable but far from able to be described as luxurious. The fine line between say Gucci's idea of luxury and bonafide members of fédération de la haute couture et de la mode is larger than the average Joe Blow imagines. I'd LOVE to see a video on that, @ZoeHong, PLEASE!...most people have no idea.
as someone who knows absolutely nothing about the fashion industry but is willing to learn, your videos are really interesting and even tho you give a lot of info it never feels difficult to pay attention!!
That corset trench coat was exquisite! It's totally my vibe! I I could put a corset in everything and never have to wear a bra underneath my clothing while also being supported, I'd be set for life!
Love it! I do pay attention to those details in every pieces that I had purchased. Last year i bought a short from Reiss full price I paid because really love the way it fits me, after trying one at Aritzia Babaton brand that I did liked but the Reiss short has everything that I always look for my shorts; then a month later at Macys I found a short for 16 dls on sale so I bought 3 diferents color. Today all those 4 shorts are loose on me because i drop off few lbs. Reiss doesnt have my actual sizes anymore, so I descontructed it to do some alteration and I can see why it cost me so much mkore than the ones at macys.
I could spend my entire day sitting in front of my laptop watching you drawing those sketches... I mean, OMG they're beautiful and you did it like zero doubt!
Your videos are so good, I can't make up my mind on what to watch first every time I get to your channel. I start one video, see other ones under that video & then my mind just goes cray-cray - I WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING you share! 😆😁 Thank you so much for educating us Zoe 🤎
Absolutely adore your videos !!! I sew for myself because it’s therapeutic and learnt from my mom growing up since she was a seamstress and designed all of my dad’s outfits for performing as a Jazz musician in the sixties . I dislike most of the clothes I see in stores or they’re way out of my budget so I sew my own . I find your videos so helpful and professional!!! Love them all! Thank you 🙏!!!!
Hi Zoe, I saw three of your videos and I already fell in love with your style, I saw that you like wearing ties as much as I do. I'm Brazilian and I don't understand much English, but your videos give me a lot of knowledge
This is such a fantastic video. I saw a garment recently where they used a cheaper lining for the sleeves as they did for the body. Now I understand why!
Zoe, thank you for all this amazing content! I used just to like clothing but you are making me fall in love for this whole fashion universe! (And I finally understood about how brands are categorized!)
Hey, I wanted to share a tidbit on the TJ Maxx Marshalls Ross statement. I have worked for a few brands that specifically have lines just for them or have developed products for their request under the fashion brand's name. I love your videos and thought you would like to know that they are not just buying closeouts anymore. Some brands while designing their collection will develop protos in the same items at a lesser cost for the material. That way the item will have the same name as the product in store but the finish or color name is specifically for Tj Maxx, Ross, and Marshall's
This looks so much fun, it even gave me the motivation to do the exercise! (by the way, that couture coat is to die for... ♥ All those designs look beautiful!) Also, the idea with using a tracing paper on a mannequin never occured to me, but it´s really helpful!
Thank you so much for sharing this Zoe! I have been working on designing a collection but I haven't even began to source fabrics.. Once I do, I know it will be easier to determine what price point my clothes will fall under. But this was super helpful!
Oh wow. That last coat was right up my alley 😍. Your sketching ability flows as smooth as carving warm butter. I really need to start practicing for at least an hour a day. I’m super jelly 😩.
I love fashion, it is extremely interesting to me and I learned a TON from this video, thank you! My favorite part was learning all the different levels of fashion.
yeah I want to get into making clothes so I can spend money on good fabrics and then spend loads of time and effort making myself some perfect fitting “bridge looking” classic pieces (and some fun pieces obvs). I mean also I just like making stuff so it seems like a good skill to conquer. Idealistic? Definitely but I’m amped to give it a try and see where it takes me :) So I really really like the videos that point out distinguishing features of “Luxury brands”
Thank you so much, you are a genius! i finally decides to make my first collectin and take my aideas to the next level, and your videos had helped me soooooo muuuch!
I drew a character with EXACTLY the same shirt as the first drawing in the thumb nail but without the bows on the sleeves and i can say you drew it 100% better lol
I got an Eddie Bauer 100% denim jacket from the 1990s/early 2000s from an upscale thrift store for $11 a few months ago. It has a little wear on the inside, but is in very good condition as a whole. I just saw the saw exact design from the same brand at Kohl's yesterday. They wanted almost $80 for a cheaper cotton/polyester blend fabric version. I just laughed. It would be neat to see a video about how quality/production within the same brand can vary over time and what common reasons are for this.
OHGOD I hated doing plats during high school. I'm so happy I'm done and it's finally been five years since that nightmare ended ç___ç Btw, I really like your designs, I just didn't expect to see nightmare fuel lol
Hi, I love your videos and know your busy, but I would love it if you could answer this question. I saw in one of your old videos you worked in fashion education. I am a junior in high school and I would love to become a fashion/ fashion design teacher. I know it is specific, but I would love a job that combines my love for teaching, fashion and helping people. My question is, what should I look for/ major in college. Should I major in teaching or major in fashion design? I have acquired some good sewing skills over the years and sewing and garment creation is definitely one of my favorite things to do. Thanks for your help.
Most fashion schools don't care if you have a teaching degree or not. They are more concerned with a fashion degree and industry experience. Generally, most schools won't hire you without industry experience unless you went to that same school and you were a great student.
I bought a tan London Fog trench in 1985, I struggled with the purchase because I really wanted it, and it was expensive. I paid $65 , I made $10 per hour. I wore that coat for 20 years, it was still in good shape, and held up style wise. This brings up an interesting comparison...I was working as an RN....the last I worked in that field was 2010, made $35 per hour, and a similar coat still cost $65. The comparative cost of shoes and clothing, in the moderate price range is more in the favor of the consumer now. Now housing, that is another question.
I loved this video thank you so much for doing this video you said in the video that trench coats coats are at an investment item what about evening gowns so you think evening gowns or an investment item
First of all, yet again one of the best videos on youtube on the given subject, so thank you so much :) secondly, I wanted to ask about something you said about layering chiffons to create an opacity gradient with the lining - is there such thing as opacity gradient fabric? DO ou know of any tecnique to achive this?
What do you make of people who sell at local craft/artisan fairs? I have seriously been thinking of selling some of my really basic clothing pieces and cute little felt crafts at local craft fairs here in Orange County for the rich housewives with money to burn lol.
I think that this video is and was necessary for UA-cam because it clearly and transparently explains the quality of clothing and why some clothing is affordable and or expensive. BRAVO GIRL. By the way, where did you get your sketch outlines? I can’t draw anything to save my life so I’d love to know where you got yours so I can practice because my sketches look like a 10-year-old on sugar ! 😂
Is there a way you could work up the “ranks” of the levels of fashion? For example could I start with a line in TJ Max then eventually start my own house?
Yes, people start new brands at a different price point later on all the time, some start cheap and get more expensive, some go the other way, like Donna Karan and DKNY, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, Gap and their companies, etc.
In my country fashion industry and garment price point are sometimes VERY BAD, me and my mom made custom made order clothes, so our price is a bit higher.. our frequent customer gets it, but some just.. mock people like us, since for them buying things online or at the mall is better, BUT stuffs with S/M/L sizes hits and misses on the measurement.. so, rather than going to us for appointment some people have the balls to just ask my mom to measure them then ask my mom for that measurement to give to other dressmaker for cheaper price.. mind you we never ever give real measurements away, plus mom always write only in numbers and never add any details.. at one point this EP asked my mom to just give her the basic pattern since she want to make one for cheaper price, we blacklisted her, plus she's the type that calculates every sewing by cm and asked for things to be remodelled every fitting (we're not a couture house, but we do have standards).. there's also a lot of business that sells clothes at very lower price since there's no regulation whatsoever in Garment industry, most of the workers got so little pay and the fabric quality is as crappy as it gets.. And some just plainly scam people, by reselling shitty clothes in higher price in between "collection" (more like a curated resell) and by paying influencers and bloggers they can sell a lot, and since people are very social media driven they often leave good reviews even tho' the outfit looked really wonky on them.. and sometimes the bad reviews are deleted anyways.. Point is.. Fashion Industry is scary, it is a though place.. and money talks..
I have a question about the difference in high quality fabrics vs low quality for an example lets use hoodies. Lets say I buy a hoodie for 400 dollars from a somewhat expensive brand stone island or Alyx and a 40 dollar one from vans. With both hoodies made out of 100% cotton I feel a quality in the 400 dollar stone island vs the vans one. The 400 hundred feels stronger a bit heavier/sturdier than the vans but yet still soft where as the vans is lighter and a it more flimsy. Where does the quality come from? is there a thread count difference why is one feel so much different than the other? Is the process that makes them different done prior to going to fabric shops or do brands have a special processing that they use for their fabrics? I hope my question wasn't too confusing lol
Fascinating! I understand that you'd want to minimize fabric waste by designing patterns with many smaller pieces. But that means there are more seams to sew, which calls for more work by a human seam worker. Am I to understand that fabric is more expensive than human labor in garment production? It's kind of the same thing (fabric $$ > workers $) when it comes to raglan vs. set-in sleeves. Set-in sleeves are harder to sew vs. raglan sleeves, so SI sleeves need more human touch. But it sounds like they're cheaper than easier-to-sew raglan sleeves. Wild.
Hi Zoe Hong I'm one of your new subscriber just wanted to ask if what kind of paper did you use here while sketching? Cause it's a little transparent? Thank you so much 🥰
Can we create garments inspired by your designs for the purpose of practicing garment construction and the whole process of design -> finished product?
Please give this video a thumbs up if you want me to continue making videos on how design and business intersect!
Zoe Hong really well done video and explanations. And as always your technical drawing is beautiful! Thank you.
Sooo helpful to see things explained vs just hear! Awesome! Thank you!
very useful thank you!
Wonderful video(‘s) !! Keep it up!
May I ask what pens and pencils you used in this video? They seem great!

I didn't do this in fashion school either. I make a lot of videos on things I learned in the industry I wish I learned in school.
I was in fashion school about 5 years and i dont remember designing for different price points either. More teachers should use this this concept. Most students design within the contemporary range and up when not everyone is going to end up there
Melissa Quinn same here, I was in fashion school and I am learning more about fashion outside uni
The old adage, you don’t know what you don’t know...leaves you struggling to even know what to ask.

Lovin' that Couture Insanity trench coat, looks really cool.
It's such an amazing design, definitely would buy !

Girl your work is stunning we definitely need a part 2 of this!!!!
Great content! This is real, tangible, usable information for building a fashion business, and I will definitely use it in my work. Thank you, Zoe!!
Hi Zoe, I saw three of your videos and I already fell in love with your style, I saw that you like wearing ties as much as I do. I'm Brazilian and I don't understand much English, but your videos give me a lot of knowledge
I'm dying!! The kimono trench and corset trench ....girl..you are killer !! I could watch you draw all day xx
Thanks!
This looks like a Love Nikki tactic where I have to evolve the shirt on the left in order to get the one on the right lmao
Last trench coat was cool :D
This is such a fantastic video. I saw a garment recently where they used a cheaper lining for the sleeves as they did for the body. Now I understand why!
I really want that sleeveless trench coat now. With like a hood. It would be everything. Time to learn to sew I suppose
Sounds great! Good luck!
I barely care about what I wear, but I do love drawing illustrations and concepts, so this is very helpful. Thank you so much!
Zoe, thank you for all this amazing content! I used just to like clothing but you are making me fall in love for this whole fashion universe! (And I finally understood about how brands are categorized!)
I could watch you draw and design clothes ALL DAY!
I could watch you draw all day long. I cannot wait to be on that level.
Every single video you blow my mind with things I didnt even realize I didnt know.
Thanks!
Hey,
I wanted to share a tidbit on the TJ Maxx Marshalls Ross statement. I have worked for a few brands that specifically have lines just for them or have developed products for their request under the fashion brand's name. I love doing that! Window shopping to understand price point and quality is so important. You really do get what you pay....most of the time.lol
Thank you so much for sharing this Zoe! I have been working on designing a collection but I haven't even began to source fabrics.. Once I do, I know it will be easier to determine what price point my clothes will fall under. But this was super helpful!
You're welcome!
Oh wow. That last coat was right up my alley 😍. Your sketching ability flows as smooth as carving warm butter. I really need to start practicing for at least an hour a day. I’m super jelly 😩.

You’re so good at drawing with perfect lines 👏
#practicenotmagic
Please don't stop uploading videos in case
I need information about fashion and I need you ❤
That couture trench coat is everything. I need that in my life so badly.
As always Ms. Zoe, wonderful video. Thank you.🌺🤗🌺
yeah I want to get into making clothes so I can spend money on good fabrics and then spend loads of time and effort making myself some perfect fitting “bridge looking” classic pieces (and some fun pieces obvs). I mean also I just like making stuff so it seems like a good skill to conquer. Idealistic? Definitely but I’m amped to give it a try and see where it takes me :) So I really really like the videos that point out distinguishing features of “Luxury brands”
Fantastic presentation! Excellent information for both Creator and Consumer.
Great video and great information, Ms Zoe. Educational!!
Thank you 🌺🤗🌺
Always so detail and yet simple! 💥💕
Zoe Hong!
Wow this is exactly the topic I was wondering before!
I don't understand about fashion
But came here to see your sketches lol
I like your sketches
Thank you so much, you just open up a whole new horizon for me.
Thank you so much, you are a genius! i finally decides to make my first collectin and take my aideas to the next level, and your videos had helped me soooooo muuuch!
not only learned new but a lot.thanks zoe
I drew a character with EXACTLY the same shirt as the first drawing in the thumb nail but without the bows on the sleeves and i can say you drew it 100% better lol
omg this was so helpful and your voice is so soothing! thank u! 💕

I’m learning a lot
Keep it up 👍🏽
Love this series, and hoping you'll make more videos in it!
Thanks!
what type of pencil is that? its coming out so smoothly!
Those clothing looks so good

Oh, I could talk about that for literally one hundred hours. :/
I loved this video thank you so much for doing this video you said in the video that trench coats coats are at an investment item what about evening gowns so you think evening gowns or an investment item
No, most people wear dresses for an event once. That's why rental companies do so well for evening and cocktail dresses.
Cool vid. Great sketches btw👌 Very interesting! Many thanks for the insight. 👍
You're welcome!
Excellent!! You gave the rights points to considerate in my next collection. Thanks a lot

Probably only if you handweave the fabric and can control which yarn to use when.
I could watch you illustrate clothes for the rest of my life I think.
thanks alot honey ..it was very informative video
Thanks Zoe really helpful!
Hello what price point would you say brands such as Cole Buxton and Represent fit into?
can i ask what kind of ballpoint or that dark green thing is? what's the name and where can i buy it
As soon as you said “can’t use couture” I thought but Juicy tho! 😂🤣
hahaha
May I know what paper and silhouette you’re using to trace and draw the designs?
What do you make of people who sell at local craft/artisan fairs? I have seriously been thinking of selling some of my really basic clothing pieces and cute little felt crafts at local craft fairs here in Orange County for the rich housewives with money to burn lol.
Make cute stuff and get that money.
good luck.
Great Video!!
Thanks!
Please Zoe where can I get the template you are using please help me you have thought me how to draw thank you very much
I sell my templates on zoehong.etsy.com.

Yes, people start new brands at a different price point later on all the time, some start cheap and get more expensive, some go the other way, like Donna Karan and DKNY, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, Gap and their companies, etc.
Where do you get the croquis template?

Hey Zoe, thanks so much for making this video! Where can I buy the figure templates that you are drawing on top of? Thanks!

I hope my question wasn't too confusing lol
not gonna lie i would love to own that couture trench coat
I get that a lot. :D
Wild.
It's all a balance, a little of this and a little of that.
where can I find the templates you use to sketch? love the video, keep them coming XX

What pen did you use to do your sketches in this video ?? Xx
Hi Zoe Hong I'm one of your new subscriber just wanted to ask if what kind of paper did you use here while sketching? Cause it's a little transparent? Thank you so much 🥰
It's marker paper.
What pencil is that?
Zara is Moderate O.O
I consider Zara Junior in my book, on the expensive side of Junior, but still Junior. Pull & Bear also.
Zara is junior def... the most expensive shit i've seen in zara is literally 145 for leather boots
But I see Zara as more expensive than Pull & Bear.
Thanks for the wonderful video Zoe but I've a question...can a male study fashion design in a fashion school?
Nope. Just women. ;)
Can we create garments inspired by your designs for the purpose of practicing garment construction and the whole process of design -> finished product?
Yeah, if you want. I'd prefer if you credit me but go have fun!
@@zoehongteaches Oh, of COURSE! If I even make anything mildly inspired, I make sure to credit. Ahh, I'm so excited!!
