@@trovarion Hi Trov. I don't know if this is something you could use, but a video I'd really like to see, is one where you give constructive criticism to Golden demon commended and or pin winners. As said, I don't know if it is even a thing that you could make, perhaps even harder if people did not ask for that criticism/feedback.? You could also try to ask pin winners, or anyone who entered golden demon but did not win, to send in images for criticism? I think that could be a really interesting video to see, especially after the upcoming GD. 😁
As someone new to the hobby who's still working up the courage to paint his first mini this is a tremendous help! Thanks for taking a step back to teach us beginners. I'd happily watch more fundamentals of mini painting if you wanted to make it a series. And thank you for your hard work!
If it helps you to get the courage to start painting; know that there are ways to strip the paint off your models. So if you want your first soldiers to look as good as your most recent soldiers, you can go back and redo them.
Just start! Just jump in with some minis that your not too worried about, your first few attempts will not be great but by your 10th mini it will Start to come together a bit
I just started last month, got a box of 10 minis, the starter paint+tool set, the color set from Vallejo, glue and some brushes and just got started. Like mentioned above, the first few werent the best but im starting to see progress. Gl and have fun!
If you're just starting, check out oils as well. Wetblending acrylics is less forgiving due to fast dry time and you also kind of need a wet palete, while with oils you have all the freedom and time. Discovering oils was what brought me back from hobby burnout. The finish is different to that of acrilic (more realistic) and I like it, but see if you prefer it. If you consider Oils - Oilbrusher is the least hassle way to go about it
I've been painting for more than 20 years, but these kinds of videos are always a great reminder of things to try, to be aware of, or to reconsider. Thanks for the great video!
I have been researching for quite some time on how and what techniques to use for miniature painting before I dive into it. For whatever reason how you explained these techniques really clicked with my Photoshop/InDesign experience and I now feel more confident about diving in than I ever did before. Thank you!
No one ever explained loaded brush so clearly and concisely thank you. Your videos never compromise the INFO for the sake of the TAINMENT and I always feel like your videos are a good use of time. Keep doing what you do it's important for the community!
I highly recommend Painting Buddha videos for this. They are a little older and they werent able to continue. But the wealth of infofrom Ben Komets is amazing
@@ralphpug08 two different effects. Both have a moist base usually. One is dampen slightly with moist brush then do loaded brush. Other is do one pass just redo base coat then do loaded brush. The tip is usually a heavier Base consistency than back of brush.
I felt one critical bit of info was missed that from my understanding and practice is critical for loaded brush, and I was surprised Trovarion didn't cover it. The paint you load with should be at least a little thinner than the one you pick up on the tip. This will help ensure good flow.

This video was SUPERB, really appreciate all the skill and effort that went into making such a clear, digestible and extremely useful guide 🙌 thank you!
I'm really glad not only that this video exists, but that you showed that oft-frowned-upon techniques of washing and drybrushing actually can be used at a higher level than just a quick and sloppy "cover everything with zero precision" approach that a surprising amount of people seem to think is the only way they can be used (therefore making them 'objectively bad' techniques, rather than just amateurishly used). Also, I'll be arrogant enough to say there's an even more important (especially for beginners) skill that you missed in your video (or maybe I just missed it??): Trust in the process. Don't give up just because a half-finished paintjob looks bad, keep going - a lot of art processes, not only miniature painting, go through an "ugly duckling" phase, where the quality looks bad despite an increasing amount of work being put in; it's important to actually see the painting through to the end instead of giving up at that step or thinking you're doing something wrong. Sometimes, the final highlights, the final airbrushed inks, the final glazes and filters, the final details being painted up, or even painting the rim of the base (in matte black) are what actually makes the figure suddenly look good. Keep going, trust the process, trust your own ability to deliver. There's a good chance you're better than you think.

Very helpful video for new and seasoned painters alike! One of the most important things I've learned for mini painting is how to correctly fix mistakes. After knowing how to fix mistakes, it really makes painting less stressful and intimidating.
I’m still very new to painting but I was so surprised the first time I tried glazing in shadows with agrax earthshade rather than just slapping it all over. You can have way more control with a wash than you’d think.

Thank you for the video, it's a very comprehensive guide to the fundamental techniques! Even if I have heard of, been shown, and even tried all of these at least once, your explanation and examples make a big difference.
Good video, I always seem to pick up something new or remember something i had forgotten when I watch a "basic brush/ painting techniques" video. Gracias Senor!!
I am still on the sponging hype. It basically revived my will to paint, cause its so easy and casual to get over the initial basecoat and first highlight, which usually are more on the annoying side of painting steps
The main tips I've gathered over the countless hours of watching anything art related are: 1. Practice. No matter what you're doing, as long as you're trying to do better, you're increasing your skills or your motor functions at the least. 2. Try new things. Goes hand in hand with practicing to be better. Opens your mind to new skills and view sets. 3. NEEDS MORE CONTRAST lol
Amazing video. I'd only add lineart as a great skill. You don't do that so that's cool, but I recommend it. A thin line of black or anything suitable dark around every shape where different textures meet. Like between skin and the leather straps. It makes an instant visual impact.
Good advice. I got the forgebane box back when I first started, and used the necrons in it as my practice run for getting into the hobby. Though, funnily enough, I had such fun with the necrons that now I have a proper army of them.
I'd love to see a video on mixing paints for highlights and shadows etc. I'm new to painting minis, but have some art back ground - and i'm really struggling with colour saturation. I find I can't highlight or shade without desaturating the colours - and end with either a dull, or chalky finish, having lost all vibrancy.
I cant remember his name off hand but he's terrific painter and youtuber but one of his quotes about color and highlighting is to "turn it up to 11 the wash it back down to a 10" which just means you really exaggerate the color and contrast and let the wash knock that down then go back in with very specific edge highlights. I struggle with that myself as my painting tends to lean towards realism and that really just does not work well on the table top.
Quick question! As an example: 01:41 of the video, you can see small bubbles formed in the cracks. If you leave them alone, will they dry like bubbles or do they usually pop by themselves? I spend a significant amount of time to pop them during basecoating and was wondering if that is just waste of time.. Thank you!
good catch! I'll be honest, I didn't see that. But I did not conssciously get rid of them and they were not there anymore, so they probably go away on their own? But it probably doesn't hurt to avoid them.
Thank you so much for this (and your other) videos! I really love your style of painting, how it is kind of realistic but yet approachable, textured and crisp. I only painted miniatures a few times by now but watched a lot of tutorials (classic problem :D) and found I never quite found something I liked up until now. I know there goes a lot of effort in it, but i never liked the comic style, textureless, almost "cell shading" look of the typical Warhammer tutorials, but also wasn't so much into the overly airbrushy style that screams "airbrush" at you the second you look at it. At the same time, I was a bit insecure of a viable process with more drybrushing and "free" painting, since many more appealing (to me) techniques used like thousands of glazing layers for a in my opinion similar look, which I just didn't felt patient enough to do. Also I think controlling every last mymeter of paint is a great skill but also yields quite "stick in the ass" (I don't know if that translates, it's a German expression for being stiff and unnatural, like you had a rod in your ass keeping you overly upright while walking) look. Your videos perfectly sum it up and it helps a ton to hear / see this from an obviously experienced painter, since it erases the doubt of "doing something wrong". I have a been a bit sceptical because of the a little - what it seemd - click-baity title of this video, but actually, it fits perfectly! In general I think teaching people techniques and helping them to understand principles is way better then just "feeding" someone with a recipe, which makes them stuck to that sometimes very specific steps/colors/whatever. I'm excited to watch more and hopefully soon embark further in my painting journey. (:
I would love to see a video like this on less organic figures, like tau from 40k. I find a lot of videos just seem to airbrush on a bunch of colour instead of individually painting their panels, and it's not super helpful for a beginner.
Make a drybrush pallet. Grab a shallow container half inch to inch lip on it then find all your scraps (bits, sprue cuttings), small rocks and sand. Even broken minis. Glue the big pieces down then use some watered down pva glue slather that in the open areas add the sand and small rocks. Come back in about an hour hit it again with the wayered down pva. Come back the next day and base coat everything with black once dry hit it with a white drybrush. Once dry now you have a good way to see just how your paint will look on the mini. Infinitely resuable and essentially free.
Absolutely incredible! Can you share the paints you used for the skin, scales and eyes? I want to use a similar scheme for my Seraphon and am so glad I waited for this video
Some Emerald as a base (I had to mix it, because I apparently lost my emerald bottle), the belly is Nurgling Green (GW) that was gradually highlighted with Ivory (AK); scales have been washed with Teradon Torquoise (GW Contrast), highlights built with Torquoise (AK) and Sky Blue (AK) and then White mixed in. Rest of the Green Skin has been Highlighted with Vampiric Flesh (AK).The Magenta Parts are various mixes of Volupus Pink (GW Contrast) and Beige Red (AK), highlighted with a brighter Skintone. Eyes are a base of that mix and then I added an Orange to the eyeball area and highlighted that with white.
First video of 2024 and Trov coming out with a banger!!! You set the bar high for the next ones, though. As always, this has been really informative, and i learned something new
Hey Trovarion, thanks for the video/tutorial! How about painting a creature/monster, in a grimdark style, for your next video? It would be cool to see your take on a non-human, like this lizard men, but in a grimdark aesthetic.
This might be buried, but-- Thank you especially for making this video without the use of an airbrush. I have nearly everything I need to dive deep into the hobby (minis and models/figurines) but have decided to hold off on an airbrush for now because of a lack of info online about the effects of an airbrush + spray booth on surrounding electronics. So seeing that I can still have fun and paint good-looking pieces of art is really emboldening to me. I still crave an airbrush but I know that I can get started anyway :)
Love your informative vids, Trovarian🔥especially for a newbie in the hobby, they really help me learn! I’m starting a Seraphon army, so is there a chance you could do a painting tutorial showing what colors you used for this lizard boy? Thanks again! Keep up the awesome work!
Wet blending is the most intimidating of the techniques. 17:28 Is it okay to be horrified that you got paint in the heel and ferrule? Not sure what you were doing with that brush to get paint that high up. :)
Great video, I have recently been using glazes and thinner layers of paints for transitions. I much prefer it to GW's more sharp highlights. I would love to see you do a video about using the coliur wheel and combining three colours to make new colour schemes and why some colours work together and what ratios.
Great video, I really appreciate how hard it is to put a good video together!! I was surprised you didn't mention in the loaded brush explanation that the paint you load with should be thinner than the one you pick up on the tip so you have proper flow?
Nice painting :) Should try glazes. I've still a lot to learn myself but the finish and colour transitions are 👌 Start doing standard skin tones and highlights then follow with the glazes :)
I know this is not related to brush techniques, but a thing very important to tell to beginners : Never compare your work with pictures on the internet . Our modern phones, (or great cameras of pros ) make minis look better than in real life (usually) Furthermore , content creators and people who share pictures online take the best shot , with the best light on the best angle . So you have no chance in comparison. Another tip : When progressing on my minis , I take pictures on different stages . Do it, and you will see why ;) Anyway, great vidéo ( as usual ) from Trovarion.
Great video! Would also love to see "X ways to do this" videos (ex: faces, gems). Being able to see how you do similar efects with different techniques is truly enlightening.
That is why i watch Trovarion and was subscribed to his Patreon for some time, the teaching parts. I'm not a fan of the entertainment part of most of mini-painting videos, teaching nothing really. Trovarion and other (live Vince Vinturella and Sam Lenz for examples) are very good at sitting down, dissecting techniques and teaching them in an easy and comprehensive manner with a clear result in the end. I feel everyone needs a reminder on the basics every now and then and you do it in a good way ! Keep up the awesome work ! Ps : Getting us from the basics to the pinnacle of your art (like the Everchosen Nurgle mini you won with, the Crimson Fist video etc) i think that would be a good video series to show the natural evolution of a mini with slowly integrated techniques to the pipeline, from tabletop okay, to mid-tier standard display/central piece of an army to Master display/Golden Demon/Everchosen winner like you can do ! :)
I know youre going through a crossroads trying to figure out what content you SHOULD make for the algorithm vs what you want to make. Beginner techniques presented in a numbered list sounds a whole lot like its for the algorithm but I honestly gained some good information here from a couple techniques I dont use. Its great when you find a video that really demystifies techniques. There was a cult of paint video that I felt like just unlocked blending with glazes on power swords and I feel like this hit loaded brush in the same way.
I actually wanted to make this video. But the low view numbers are just one more piece in the puzzle that shows tutorial style videos have stopped working in this nieche 3 years ago. I genuinely don't know what to do at this point, because the viewtime is through the roof for this video, so once people clicked it they see the value and enjoy it, its just not a lot of people that click it. I honestly don't know what to do at this point.
@trovarion I hope you can find a balance to make it worth while and fulfilling. I'm a big fan of the channel. It feels like you want to teach us to paint and sculpt and use UA-cam as the vehicle where some channels it feels like they want to be a UA-cam star and use mini painting as the vehicle.

I am still on the sponging hype. It basically revived my will to paint, cause its so easy and casual to get over the initial basecoat and first highlight, which usually are more on the annoying side of painting steps
Really well worded and helpful video, even with 9 years of experience this was a good way to spend my time and I came away having learnt things
The main tips I've gathered over the countless hours of watching anything art related are:
Finally!! a pro that has not been bought by Artis Opus!! I really love this video, very useful to retake the painting habit after years
Great video, explained so much in such a short time. I would also love to know what tufts/flock you used on the base.
What a great video, thank you. Any and all beginner tips is great but this video seems to be above and beyond
This video is awesome. Has really solidified / clarified so many things for me. Cheers!
Mentally, I think it helps to set the bar really low at first. Buy some minis you don’t really care about and just have fun.
The State of Play did a nice video about thinning paints that I recommend
Thank you for quick answer! ^.^ Keep up the good work!@@trovarion
You’re back! I missed your videos. Incredible work as always!👏👏
So much to learn in this one, gonna have to wach a couple of times
That’s so awesome. I’m a beginner! So this will really help.
Awesome work. And video
What an absolutely wonderful video.
Awesome to see your videos back again in 2024 ✌️🙌
I would love to see a video like this on less organic figures, like tau from 40k. I find a lot of videos just seem to airbrush on a bunch of colour instead of individually painting their panels, and it's not super helpful for a beginner.
Always good advice and clear demonstrations. Great beginner video.
awesome info thank you. Can we have a tuto for the base ? Looks incredible :)
Superb video, the loaded technique was an eye opener, thank you for sharing.
For drybrushing use a piece of wood over paper towel as the paper can leave fibers on the mini
I've also seen people recommend using carton instead of a paper towel.
New Video by Trovarion, everything else isn't important right now 💚
Absolutely incredible!
@@trovarion thank you so much!
Thanks for the video ! Great topic. Any chance you show us how you did that base, seems simple yet so effective
WOW. thank you for this. it's wonderful
Another factor to think about.. which I think you missed… Have Fun!
Model looks great, by the way!!
Could you make a Tutorial for the Base of this Mini as well? Looks amazing.
Best minipainter teacher!
Building on that I would love to see a Tzeentch great Daemon / Kairos Fateweaver
Your explanation are really clear and helpful, thanks you from France 💯
I like to apply my washes just after base coating and then do a drybrush or edge highlight or do my layering to bring back the colors that I want.
Great mini painting tutorial, cheers
Would love to see a guide for the basing! Looks awesome.
So do I, please :)
Hi Trovarion, do you have any videos on how to do that black/purple marble club on the seraphon warrior? I must know how to do that
Love your informative vids, Trovarian🔥especially for a newbie in the hobby, they really help me learn!
I really like the base. Can you link the materials you've used or maybe a simple tutorial?
A great video. Thank you for sharing your experience and skills 😊
Great video! Really enjoyed the simple explanations
Your color work is awesome!
Good stuff, its hard for newer people to figure out what to focus on. This channel probably helped me the nost starting out a couple months ago.
Awesome video! Thanks for the hard work you put into these videos.
Top quality - really nice. Also kind of super demoralising as well but gotta start somewhere!
Great video, I have recently been using glazes and thinner layers of paints for transitions. I much prefer it to GW's more sharp highlights.
I would love to see you do a video about using the coliur wheel and combining three colours to make new colour schemes and why some colours work together and what ratios.
I would really love to know which mini this is because I love the sculpt of it
Great video, I really appreciate how hard it is to put a good video together!! I was surprised you didn't mention in the loaded brush explanation that the paint you load with should be thinner than the one you pick up on the tip so you have proper flow?
Nice painting :)
Should try glazes. I've still a lot to learn myself but the finish and colour transitions are 👌
Start doing standard skin tones and highlights then follow with the glazes :)
I started trying glazes 20 years ago, but thanks for the tip 😅
@@trovarion 😅
Thanks man. In the 80's and 90's we didn't have much to go on :D
Great Video! Thanks
I know this is not related to brush techniques, but a thing very important to tell to beginners :
Never compare your work with pictures on the internet .
Our modern phones, (or great cameras of pros ) make minis look better than in real life (usually)
Furthermore , content creators and people who share pictures online take the best shot , with the best light on the best angle .
So you have no chance in comparison.
Another tip :
When progressing on my minis , I take pictures on different stages .
Do it, and you will see why ;)
Anyway, great vidéo ( as usual ) from Trovarion.
I'd love for you to do a "minimum numbers of paint pots, maximum amount of colours" mixing tutorial.
Incredible video, thank you!
Great video! Would also love to see "X ways to do this" videos (ex: faces, gems). Being able to see how you do similar efects with different techniques is truly enlightening.
Great suggestion!
Exactly, that would be great. I am consistently unable to do faces:)
Thanks Trovarian, great vid.
What brushes would you recommend for those fine detailed brush strokes when you need a long thin tip? Thanks.
I use raphael 8404s size 1 or 2 - never let me down and last a long time if you take care of them.
@trovarion appreciate you taking the time to comment, thanks.
Great as always. Love ya work, Mate.
Smash dat like button for the algorithm! ❤
This video is amazing, among your best
hey @trovarion, how did u do that moss on the base? its sop awesome
@@Moonlighter_TV thanks!
What two colours did you mix for the base later? Its really nice
I just found this channel! Thanks for the content, this will really help me improve!
