Do you have PDF guides from your teachings available anywhere?
Yes! They are all available at www.patreon.com/trovarion for the 5$ level
Liked and commenting because 9:16 and I'm sitting here in lock-down talking to my dog.
I've been watching videos for a few months and just today broke down and went to support my local hobby store. $250 later I walked out with a Necron set, bunch of brushes and a dozen paints along with a bunch of other misc stuff. As i type this I am Zen-fully scraping mold lines and assembling a small army while UA-cam auto plays in the back ground. I have no intention of playing, instead I am just enjoying making art.
Wish me luck! Thanks.
The colour and light book is a must have for any artist
true!
I like the new intro.
Also, I love the casual flex of having a shelf full of golden demons in the background.
They must have hopped down a shelf on their own, I swear 🤣
Just think of your subscribers as forty thousand friends.
Rackham had such good painters. Their work was amazing.
The fact that you mentioned rackham grants you a like
The magnifying glasses also help your back. Dudes at the game shop hunched over like the hunchback of notre dame just to see what they are painting. Oof.
The last point hit a bit too close to home. Thank you for your video!
Man, I was a bit worried by the clickbaity title for a minute, but this one has a lot of solid advice.
The bit about matte paint is really spot-on. Premade blood and slime effect paints always bugged me, and it took me way too long to realise it was because they kill the illusion of scale. And trying to figure out if you've under/over-highlighted when painting over a shinier surface is a real pain.
I need to play the youtube game...doesn't mean I can't still produce quality content. What good is a great video, if people don't click it...
@@trovarion Yeah, I get why you did it. A lot of other channels just fail to back the clickbait up with good content, which thankfully wasn't the case here.
Great stuff!
thanks for looking over it and for the tips!
I started using (funny enought) Raphael brushes a few days ago and the first evening of painting was like learning it all from the start again. But in a very, very pleasant way.
Cool!
Raphael 8404 are amazing my favourite over w&n series 7
Last time I was this early it was yesterday. My poor fiance. But for reals, I love the intro and i can't say enough about matte paint and how it helped me as well. These are all great tips man!
memes like these deserve a sticky!
I always forget how many Golden Daemons you have but now I don't think I'll be able to forget!
And seriously great stuff.
are you sure though? better watch again ;D ;D ;D
@@trovarion Better take off my shoes so I can count better too.
@@chibizion ;)
This is a really underrated channel! Even though I don't plan on painting golden-demon standard miniatures, the content on this channel is insightful.
Usually top 10 lists are clickbait...but this one is WOW! It has everything, even Rackham! Thanks!
my videos will always be the real deal!
I know but this one is really pure gold and looking at general concepts to make you progress, not technical issues. I'm a guy that paints to play, I will never get near your level but these 10 points are 100% reliable I am really impressed! Nochmal Danke!
I'll definitely get magnifier and will start to teach painting my dog... Crap, I already have a magnifier and don't have a dog...
Seriously w0w, have to admit this is probably the first time ever I was watching really useful 10 advice, not just "I have a couple thoughts and let's make its numbers to 10"! Highly recommend.
Totally agreee
Thanks for the video.
Was laughing hard at the basement meme.
Video is great, need to get those books.
Let me just say thank you for continuing to post these videos. I got into painting a year and a half ago, and you are obviously an incredible painter, sharing valuable lessons that even a newbie like me can get. That’s a rare combination.
Thank you. I almost cried when you cited Cry Havoc. I look at my Rackham miniatures now and I wince, but at the time they demanded my absolute best efforts. The painting guides helped push things along. I have nothing against GW’s painting guides but they are not the be all and end all.
CryHavoc! was an eye-opener for me, too. I Most imortant: It showed me that you can so much more than edge-highlighting. Back in those days we only had the White Dwarf ... and the tutorials in it were horrible.
Magnification is a serious game changer. I almost always wear mine nowadays, and never get eyestrain anymore.
cool :)
I'm a relatively new painter, been painting about a year now. Your videos help me a ton! Thanks dude!
glad they help! thanks for your comment!
"painting with squirrel *** hair..." Freaking brilliant
Basement- because austria ha ha ha great one! nice made vid with plenty of interesting thoughts. Thank you for that!
My Mom used to read me the Dinotopia books and I still have the first one the art work is really awesome and is a great book for people with younger children.
it's the one book I remember best from my childhood!
I got some magnifying glasses off amazon and as you say, game changer. Amazing. And I love my rosemary and co brushes. Great tips. thanks.
No friends, but i think my guinea pigs would love a lecture on color theory.
Currently I mainly use Windsor and Newton 7-series brushes, which were already a huge step up from the citadel brushes.
I've been trying magnification as there was a magnifyer on my lamp stand, but actually got more strained eyes from that. Might have to take a look into magnifying glasses..
RIP Confrontation. Had a wonderful setting, beautiful minis, and excellent ruleset. It's a tragedy they went out of business.
the saddest thing is, I doubt anyone will ever be able to step up and get a company to where they were, based on the concept of producing quality, unique figures like they did.
Awesome video
thanks!
Honestly I love my set of Squidmar Kolinsky Sable brushes. I don't use them as much as I should though, always nervous I'm going to mess them up lmao.
Davinci maestro brushes are my go to at the moment.
I’ve been painting minis for over 30. I’ve never reached the level of “pro” and I always live videos like this.
This video made me go out and get a bona fide kolinsky sable brush... you're absolutely right.... it's a game changer! I was getting tired of watching how-to videos with brushes that seemed to have endless reservoirs and permanent tips and then trying to paint with synthetic garbage. Now the next step is managing my paint thinning ratios properly. I can still see a lot of reasons to keep my utility brushes, but for detail work there is no other option than a real brush like you mentioned. Unfortunately the paint shop only had #3 and #00 Raphael brushes so I went with a Princeton #2 and #1 for now since they were 50% off, so far so good but I'll definitely be getting a Raphael in the future!
you bought a new brush today, after seeing the video? nice :)
@@trovarion Yes! I tried to find some nice brushes before but they were all disappointing, so today I did an internet search and found a serious art supply store. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for this kind of videos, I learned a lot in your channel. ^^
Awesome! Thank you, again!!
thank you!
Love the intro and the video! Definitely some good food for thought!
thanks!
Thank you for all the tips! I bought color and light arround 4-5 years ago and It has been sitting there since i guess it's time to pick It up.
I've took onboard all 10 tips and my painting has rocketed wow decent brushes and the magnifying I'm so thankful for your generosity I paid a patreon over 80 pound I never even got a mention they say if ya want to be and get the best you learn from the best thanks again trovarion...
Great video, and a lot for me to think about as a new painter. But when you mentioned Gurney, you had me sold. Dude is amazing.
truuuuuuuuuueeee
I feel guilty for watching this for free, this was such a wonderful insightful video thank you so much!
Loving that intro as well as all those digs throughout the video (lol opus brushes). Considering that I want to improve my 2D painting as well, I will certainly have a look at that colour and light book. Thank you for all the pointers! Shame the Cry Havoc magazines are no longer around but I find reading Imagine FX is great for those who are into digital painting, they give great inspiration!
oh, yeah, I remember reading through some issues! and yeah color and light will definitely help you with your 2d game!
Great video! My favorite brushes are the Raphael 8404 and Rosemary and Co Series 33. Both are fantastic.
Nice presentation.
Thank you for these videos. The reminder to enjoy the work and always be on the look out for new ideas and new ways to learn is awesome. Also LOVE that James Gurney book.
Thanks for another great video Trov. Always giving me things to buy to help my paint game! Can't wait to paint my Myrmidon!
Really enjoying colour and light, thanks for that 👍
Great video, thank you for sharing these valuable tips.
well done, looking forward to the paint along !
Great video!! Super helpful! 🔥❤️🔥
Great video, thanks for sharing! Legend :)
Magnifying glasses are probably the best investment in my painting I ever made. I'm def gonna order both those James Gurney books when I get paid, they look fascinating!
They are incredible books but complex and dense, well worth buying in my opinion. :)
@@MaZEEZaM i got Colour and Light yesterday, it's fascinating!
Very helpful tips. Thank you for being a valued member of our community. I’m going to head on over to Patrion.
love it man keep the videos coming :)
This is a great video dude! Thanks alot!
Really awesome and ever so useful tips
I use Broken Toad brushes mainly and random mid tear synthetics for metallics or base coating. I like the feel of broken toad. they dont have the biggest belly for a brush, but that actually works for me. it forces me to slow down, notice things, and take my time.
Broken Toad are really good brushes!
For me, the biggest help over the years has been magnifiers, wet pallette, real sable hair brush (Windsor and Newton series 7 size 1 watercolor), The Masters brush soap, and UA-cam tutorials.
Great video. Got yourself another sub and bell'r.
I used to use cheap artificial brushes for ages and could never understand how to paint even fairly large details. The best I had at the time was an "Artificer" from GW, a reasonable brush but no belly really and not a particularly small tip.
I made the mistake of buying some army painter brushes at the lowest end of the scale ("the psycho" and the one slightly larger I think, "insane detail" maybe?). In any case they suffer the same issue as the GW brush did but on a worse scale, just a small bunch of very short bristles means the brush can't hold any paint and it dries on the tip exceedingly fast. Unfortunately for a long time this was all I could do. My budget was very limited and spending even £5 on a brush seemed very steep to me.
Once I got a job though I bit the bullet. After doing some research I bought a set of Windsor and Newton series 7 Kolinsky Sable hair brushes (A 0, 1, 2, and 3) for about £40 and then made myself a homemade wet palette. It revolutionised my perceptions on painting. Even the no.2 holds a point sharper than brushes I'd had before and I feel like I could paint tiny details with it, despite the brush being close in size to a large 'layering' brush. Well, if I had the skill to anyway.
Be under no illusion, better brushes will not make you a better painter, they will however allow you to paint better if you can. Think of it like this. A pair of running shoes will not make you any healthier or physically fit, but they will allow you to run further, harder, and faster than if you were wearing flip-flops.
I don't think the brand really matters much, but get some good quality brushes for the emperor's sake. Big belly, fine point, natural hair if you can. And then learn how to care for them so they last and hold their nice sharp points.
And don't be afraid to use them once you've bought them. They are expensive yes but if you care for them they will last, and you won't improve by letting them sit unused, only picked up for the occasional crowning detail.
Awesome vid dude
subtle flex with all them golden demon trophies sitting casually on the shelf...
we get it you are the real deal :)
"Oh no! Whatever shall I do with these golden demons!" :P
Nothing subtle about it 😅
about as subtle as a slap to the jaw :)
I'd put them on display too. Someone who wants to see if you're just another painter youtuber or if you're the real deal can quickly see that you are (or you 3d printed some clones)
I'm really new to mini painting sorry to be an idiot here but what do the demons mean?
You are not alone man! We all are together in our loneliness!
Major flashback when you pulled out Cry Havok!
I find it ironically hilarious that I have become interested in painting tiny little details on plastic toy soldiers at an age where my eyesight has gotten to the point where I need reading glasses simply to see the 28mm scale with clarity! I made a custom pair by attaching a lens from a microscope over the reading glasses on my dominant side for when I have to get really up close.
That Colour and Light book is without a doubt an incredible book for the information it encapsulates into one book but boy is it complex, dense and far from easy to get your head around, at least it was for me. Both of James Gurney's books are extremely complex but I believe well worth buying both Colour and Light and Imaginative Realism as they really are well worth supporting because they are absolutely jammed full of a million things to learn and have incredible artwork to keep you entertained. I definitely recommend them.
They are. but like I say in the video, I believe that you can also get the basics from it and gradually start implementing them into your painting and then add more and more, gradually :)
Great video Trov.
I would gladly be your friend ☺️🙋🏽♂️ Great tome of knowledge you produced here ! THANKS 🙏🏼
Thanks for the video :) use Da Vinci series 35. Sexy extra is the handles have slight angles so they don’t roll around ;)
Thank you for this video!!!
Its fantastic, thank you for the advice. I've been using vallejo model color since 2018, now I'm waiting for the kimera kolors. About the brush, I've felt in love with rosemary’s series 33.
Can't wait for that ogroid!
I heard good things about these brushes
Awesome
The videos are getting better and better.
btw. I always thought it brought you back to the hobby, because you were siting next to me in the Austrian Basement. :-) :-D
haha, definitely
Great tips! Wish that Cry Havoc magazine was more easily available. Looks like most of the issues on eBay are quite pricey.
yeah, they are out of print since 10+ years
da vinci brushes are also amazing
I got my Myrmdon ready to go, so hyped! Great vid, hadn't thought about trying the magnifying glasses before, I assumed they'd increase eye strain not reduce it.
filmed the last parts of the first episode today, need a few days for editing (stupid editing). Some people have told me they get strained more using them, but the majority of people I talked to were fine!
@@trovarion Well I ordered some from your link so lets find out. Cheers!
@@piesandhiking4943 thank you!
I've found magnifying glasses to be quite helpful, but the built in LED more trouble than it's worth. The weight from the batteries makes wearing them very uncomfortable. They work well enough without the LED/batteries as magnifiers if you have a good desk lamp.
@@rustybuckets07 yeah you dont want to use the LED function. as you mentioned its getting unnecessarily heavy through the bateries and the light messes with how you perceive the mini too much.
Keller weil Österreich... I see what you did there ;)
Excellent video. Your brush clip scene did make me chuckle, reminded me of the movie scene out of Fight Club.
Have you ever considered painting one of your ample collection of Golden Demons?
no, they are not really all that nice sculpts :D
@@trovarion GW at their finest no doubt....
The video title was a LITTLE misleading (some of the tips ARE available elsewhere, like about the brush and mixing paints). Others, like the Cry Havok mags and the Color and Light book, are definitely solid gold. Definitely a video to bookmark and send to my friends.
Of Course I am here because Sanjen told me to come check out the new video!
Sanjen always delivers!
it very good
thanks ;)
Thanks for the tips mate :O as a returning painter I need all the help I can get.
I believe in you!
I miss Cry Havoc, great advice!
thanks! me too!
thats a nice intro
BrokenToad actually carries the Raphael 8404's for cheaper than Jackson Art Supply and their shipping won't break the bank either.
Used the affiliate link to grab a couple of the brushes recently, and I really love them. I prefer working on 1/6th+ scale and they're still outstanding, even at a size or two larger. Great brushes!
thanks a lot! great you like them!
Those 1-frame (or whatever) images of brushes were hilarious.
I've been enjoying mixing my own colors recently, but I always run into the issue of struggling to recreate that color if it runs out or I stop painting for the day. Is being able to recreate colors something that you just learn over time? I can usually get pretty close, but there is just something a little different some of the time.
Great video :)
yeah, iI see what you mean...to me it'S just never so important to get exactly the same colors, a bit of variation is always spicy :)
I usually dont warm up to videos. So far, yours seem to be the exception from the rule :)
that's because it's a good video ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thank you, Captain Obvious ;) - Yes, thats pretty much what my comment meant to imply. Looking foward for more.
I've been an artist for a long time. And a good brush is worth it's weight in gold and then some. And I always end up explaining to someone _why_ a good brush is essential when they talk about the reason they buy cheap ones.
I use citadel and army painter brushes for rough work, but once I go to edge highlight (which I really enjoy) I bust out the Artis Opus brushes.
Great video! Thank you so much!! Looking forward to your Myrmidon masterclass.
What is your opinion on the W&N brushes and how are they different from the Raphaels you use? Personally, I noticed how my painting improved as soon as I switched to W&N brand, not so much because my skill level was raised suddenly but more because I didn't have to fight the brush itself, if that explanation makes sense.
yes, that makes perfect sense, you are using less cognitive capacity on fixing your tool and can focus better on making sure the paint goes where you want :)
W&N used to be good brushes, I have not used them a lot recently, but there is nothing wrong with them in my opinion. I still prefer the Raphaels, but it is more a feeling than quantifyable properties. The Series 7 is a bit smaller than Raphael 8404s, but that is not a problem I think.
Nice job. James Gurney also has a lot of utube content for those interested.
oh yeah, he does!
CRY HAVOC !!! I love that magazine! I have one (physical) issue from waaay back in time when I played Confrontation that I bought on a trip.
Recently I found all issues in PDF and I still think those painting tutorial are amazing...and way above the level that GW paints their minis in White Dwarf.
?! WHERE did you find the pdfs? I have a few Cry Havocs in my collection but if I was going to recommend a reference, they would be high on my list.
@@scotsbillhicks From an Italian website dedicated to keeping Confrontation alive (I played Confrontation mostly in Italian). But the Cry Havoc magazines are in English. Here it is:
confrontationpills.altervista.org/cry-havoc-confrontation-magazine/?lang=en
You can download the rules as well there.
Tried Raphaels and was a bit disappointed, to be honest. Can't tell if my batch was just bad, but tip hair "curls" just a bit when used and that makes precise stuff impossible to do without cutting off that annoying curling bit (good luck doing that, harder than eye pupil glints :D). Plus some shorter hairs just split immediately and needed to be removed completely. Stuff I have to compare them with are Roubloff 1110 and, while not perfect brushes, by any means, in the batch order (3-4x cheaper per brush than Raphael) there are usually one or two that behave the way you want it to for small details.
Good tips, though!
never had a problem with raphaels, but like i said, the important thing is to find the brushes YOU are happy with :)
I really wish the Cry Havoc Magazine still existed for current subscription, you can buy second hand versions but they range in price wildly as much as $175 AUD mostly around $60 each
Please speak of this Cry Havoc Magazine ? Do you remember White Dwarf ? I use to love that magazine when I was a kid. Iv never heard of Cry Havoc before.
I’m really disappointed you mentioned your dog and there was no doggie picture 😂
Great video as always, thanks for sharing so much of your knowledge with the community!
DOG REVEAL AT 100K SUBS!
Trovarion Miniatures haha omg I’m on a mission now!
🤭
I currently use windsor and newton brushes, I really like the size 2 and try to use it wherever I can get away with it, but for some reason I absolutely hate my size 1 and 0!?! I just feel like they give such an inconsistent brush stroke, so ive been thinking about giving another brand a try - probably go for the raphaels. I also have the scale 75 fantasy and games paint range and while I do enjoy them, they do take some getting used to.
interesting...maybe it'S because the size 2 has a bigger reservoir?
Awesome tips. If you like matte paint I assume you use matte finish too? I used to use semi-gloss but I'm liking Matte finish lately.
I try to get a matt finish through paint, i dont like varnish that much ;) but if i varnish i use AK ultra matt!
