    Chris first off, thanks for using a paint brush in this beginners video and for explaining your painting process and ideas in a way that a beginner like myself can understand and not find too intimidating to even attempt. Too often I see miniature painters posting "beginners guide" videos of themselves spraying away with their three hundred dollar airbrushes rambling on about shading, highlighting, weathering etc... I can barely manage to thin my paint out correctly on my wet pallet, much less operate an airbrush effectively on something as small as a 28mm miniature. I get that the ability to do so is attainable with lots of practice. But in my opinion that is not beginner level stuff. Please keep these videos coming, they are fantastic.

    • @trovarion
      @trovarion  3 роки тому +5

      thank you! Yes, it is a bit of a disconnect to expect people to have an airbrush, although i also love to work with them from time to time. I "grew up" using a brush though and I value everything I learned without the "crutch" of an airbrush, even though i absolutely value it as another tool in the box today.

    "I know that speed painting is all around youtube right now, but painting is a hobby I enjoy" => I completely agree with you. I get the feeling that speed is the only thing some youtubers care about, sometimes to the point that it looks like they don't even enjoy painting. I love to seat and work on a miniature for a whole day. And my minis are precious to pe because I invested time in them

    • @abrannan

      Mini painting is actually several different hobbies rolled into one. One of those hobbies is playing miniature wargames. Not all wargamers want to paint to the highest level of detail, or pay an artist for a commission, or play with unpainted minis, but they'd like to get a reasonably good looking army together. Speed painting techniques are for those players/painters. It's popular around UA-cam right now because 40k 9th edition recently released, so a lot of players are picking up entirely new armies. Being faced with 30-40-ish unpainted minis can seem super daunting.

    • @bobbycrosby9765
      @bobbycrosby9765 3 роки тому

      I like to take time on the characters. But being able to work on a miniature for a whole day isn't something I can do. If I want to devote all my spare time to painting, I have about 2 hours per day. Assuming I spend half that time painting, and I take 1 hour per miniature, I'm looking at 4 months to paint my army.

    I asked if you had used water vs mixing medium on another video. One of the reasons I asked was that I found the mixing medium to smooth transitions once dry. Regarding washes and contrast paints, I think contrast paints are simply inks mixed with a matte medium. I've successfully made my own and I highly recommend going that route rather than using contrast paints. You get a lot of ink and medium looking at say the liquitex line instead. The method you used here is nearly identical to the way I batch painted my pox walkers in one sitting. Loving the videos! Keep it up.
    Cheers

      I mean, this is typically not how I paint, because I mainly paint for showcase and there I don't use any medium. For quicker stuff, obviously technical mediums make sense, but this is only like a 0.0001% fraction of my painting.

      @@trovarion I totally hear ya (and have seen from your other videos). It is a very efficient way of getting good looking stuff on the table so I applaud you for putting it out there.
      I actually didn't even fumble with metal paints and instead used a black contrast type wash over white. I figured I could put a semi gloss coat on it after a vanish to give it a metallic effect. It saved even more time as I was using that wash to do other stuff anyway.

    Painting is fun...that's why I paint way more than play. There's no rush, I can play with "tabletop ready" minis and then paint them to a "higher standard".
    The only problems are sub-assemblies...the I have to wait to paint the whole mini to a level I am satisfied with to be able to play with them.

    I think I found my favorite painting channel. He dares to say it is a hobby you do not need to rush it. I do have a technical question related to this video what medium do I need to mix in to the contrast paint? liquitex matt medium or something else? I am a bit confused about all these additives and what they do ... I should just sit down and read some chemistry. I am a Physicist I should be able to figure this one out :)

    Hey Chris, i love your Videos and really like the way you painted this minis. Im just starting out and have a super limited Budget. You use Contrast Paints as a wash, and i just dont have the budget at the moment to get Contrast paints. Would you say the difference between Washes and Contrast Paint is super big or would a wash give me an close enough look to your end result that i just could use a wash?
    I could get a set of washes from Vallejo super cheap. With all the base colors.
    Thanks in advance. And thanks for the awesome Videos!

    Nice demo. Shows that you can still make a nice job without speed painting. I think speed painting is popular because many gamers just simply can not reproduce the standards demonstrated by the Golden Daemon artists out there. Also many just do not have the interest but are willing to commit to the ethos of the game by not fielding the grey hoards.
