As someone well-versed in archosaur anatomy (the group including gators, crocodiles, birds, and dinosaurs) I can safely say that Lyle’s tongue being detached from the bottom of his mouth adds to the uncanny levels. Crocodilians have immobile tongues that are basically fused to the bottom of the mouth meaning they can’t move independently. Lyle however, has an almost human looking tongue that lifts off of the bottom of his mouth as seen in the footage of him singing as a baby in this video.
Maybe that's why he can sing
And the title of the movie is misleading. Lyle is an alligator not a crocodile.

I actually really liked the books the film was based off of growing up. Like a lot of book-to-movie adaptations, though, it has next to nothing to do with the source material so seeing Lyle singing was just… No.
Exactly what I'm saying. I read Lyle along with... what was it? Ping the duck? I think... Whatever. Both are certified classics and I think they were also hand-me-downs from my dad or his brothers. I still have the books but not with me so its not like I can ever go back to better times of Lyle when he wasn't an annoying and unlikable character.
The literary version of Lyle Lyle Crocodile is a much better character.
I loved those books so much, my family had passed down copies of all of them! We were so excited Lyle was getting a movie, but it's an insult to the books.
Also crocodiles can't stick out their tounges, yet there is a scene in the movie where he does.
This is a bipedal crocodile with Shawn Mendes voice even as a baby, can speak perfect english with no lips and you're questioning the biology of him sticking his tongue out?

I’m not surprised if he could do that since ya know. He’s anthro, although normal crocs can’t do that but since he has some human characteristics (like being able to speak fluent English, be bipedal even though irl crocs walks on all fours, etc) so sticking his tongue out is probably one of them.

King K Rool from the DK cartoon has a perfect voice imo. It fits him and he's probably the best voice acted character in a show with very good voice acting.

There is an animated Lyle Lyle Crocodile film from like the late 80's early 90's. It's vastly superior. If you can find it, it's worth a watch. There's a scene where he's shelling peas with the mom and she's gossiping and while Lyle doesn't talk or sing at all in that movie he does have this little snicker and it's my mom's favorite scene in a kid's movie.

Its not an identical comparison, but "Arlo the alligator boy" goes the whole singing croc-child SO much better, the art directors really should have used it as a reference when making this movie
I personally love it in movies and stories when large intimidating animals have soft sweet voices. All crocs having a deep raspy voice is just a negative stereotype, man! Haha. But there is something jarring about his voice and I think it's the singing. Also, I can't believe you didn't mention the alligator from All Dogs go to Heaven, I thought for sure you were gonna mention that 😂

I think a good alternative Shawn Mendes would be Hugh Jackman since he can not only act, but sing as well. Thus allowing Lyle to have more dialogue and they could give him an Australian accent since Hugh Jackman is Australian. On a side note: My theory about why Lyle looks more like an alligator than Crocodile, it's because since an alligator has a rounder snout, it seems friendlier and softer according to shape theory. And alligators in comparison to crocodiles are not as dangerous.

Vector the Crocodile has my favourite croc voice because it's gravelly and deep whilst also sounding high at the same time. It's the perfect blend and it's funny and Vector is the coolest guy
The fact that Arlo the alligator came out at least a year before and visually and aesthetically sounded and looked better.

I honestly think an Alligator is the better choice if you want a movie about a singing crocodilian, because unlike Crocodiles, Alligators have tongues that run the length of their snouts and can move freely inside the mouth. Crocodile tongues are short and cannot move around in the mouth. Having a flexible tongue is a key feature to have in order to speak and sing in human languages.
The design isn't even the biggest problem imo, sure it's weird and uncanny but you could still work with it were it not voiced by Shawn Mendez. As you said, his voice is too soft and melodic for this kind of character. Either the design stays and they get a different VA, someone who is a bit more 'gravelly', or you redesign the character into something softer and cuter which would aling better with a young voice like Shawn Mendez. There's just too much visual/audio disconnect going on here.
I legit started laughing SO hard when you mentioned how Glamrock Monty has a more approachable design then Lyle 😂 It's so true! I may not be a huge fan of Security Breach, but we can't deny that Glamrock Monty *is* the top G - Gator lol His voice acting was perfect.
Shoutouts to my boy Vector the Crocodile from the Sonic series for having the best croc voice. Every voice actor for him hits the mark spot on and all the fans who voice him in fan works always keep it the same, even when they go over the top with it.
I saw the trailer once and got freaked out when the crocodile swallowed the cat and never watched it. I hate seeing stuff get eaten whole. It makes me really uncomfortable.

Arlo the Alligator boy is a good example of an alligator with a soft or smoother singing and talking voice. Maybe that's what inspired them to go with Mendez.

When I watched this I literally was just like “relatable kid” because the kid gets along with animals the most and has a panic attack

You forgot King Gator from "All Dogs go to Heaven". And you can add Gena the Crocodile from the "Cheburashka" franchise. There are eight books and four very popular animated shorts of the Sovjet era: "Krokodil Gena", "Cheburashka", "Chapeau-Claque" and "Cheburashka idyot v shkolu" (= Chebrurashka goes to school).
Gena also looks more like an aligator then a crocodile.

Funny story, I saw this movie in a 4D IMAX screening cause I got a free ticket using rewards points for my theatre and nothing else was out that I hadn’t already seen at that point. Keep in mind I go to the movie theatre every couple days because film is one of my 3 passions, the other 2 being Digital art and Gaming.
I think they could have had a rock vocalist as Lyle. I think an Alligator/Crocodile is a lot more fitting in the Rock genre. But I don't think most rock vocalists would have agreed to be in the movie. They had to have some name recognition to draw an audience.
Like Brendon Urie or Patrick Stump or Tyler Joseph or even Machine Gun Kelly
@@robfobjanstar I'm only familiar with Machine Gun Kelly, he might be too edgy for a family film. A lot of rock vocalists want to maintain a certain cool or badass image which might be tainted by showing up in a corny family film like this.

I think Lyle's voice is meant to sound the same throughout his stages of life - to convey that it's a magical gift. It's not supposed to sound "natural".
As for the voice choice, yes, it's supposed to be a juxtaposition. That a ferocious creature doesn't follow the nature of how a crocodile is "supposed" to be. A deadly creature with a soothing voice, and sensitive nature. Not unlike Ferdinand. Shawn Mendez loves that juxtaposition.
It's very much about an oddball unpoligetically being himself in a harsh world:
"When the world says you ain't quit - world renowned . . don't count yourself out yet! When you hit that lonely and lowest low, well ups the only way left to go! You were made to reinvent the show, so ain't you glad we met?"

By the way, Lyle's body is said to be that of a croc at least.
I also think what makes it so weird is that Shawn Mendes is not acting, he is just singing. A perfect example is broadway, you can add so much emotion while singing but Shawn hardly variated the tone, doing riffs when they are not needed
