    Such a good review Dylan. Personally, if the only other identical focal length alternative is the Viltrox F1.2, despite its good performance, I just find the Samyang's size and weight far more appealing. I just wouldn't bring the Viltrox along enough.

      I hear that! The Viltrox is a wonderful lens, but I'm struggling to make a review for that one reason!

    Brilliant. You are fast becoming my favorite reviewer. I love how you talk about 'the bag', such an important talking point in photography yet omitted in many conversations. I also appreciated the bokeh comparisons with the 56 and 90. My bread and butter lens is the 90, I do not use it much in my personal work but for events is so handy to give the subject that space to work. I have not bought the 56 for this reason as (like you said) they can fulfill similar roles just with different working distances. I know everyone is gung ho for the Viltrox 75/1.2 but the size and weight of that thing is automatically a huge turn off, the compact and weight of this 75 is very tempting!
    I was put off about the aperture switch, I do like how you demonstrated a smooth aperture stepping however, something Fujinon glass struggles with!
    Very thorough and informative review, if only more reviewers took a leaf out of your book. Thanks again.

      It's a great little lens, to be sure. The compactness of it is what really makes it special. Image quality is great, but that's only useful if you'll actually carry the thing around!

    Thank you for this practical review and some very inspiring sample images!☺ I think this 75mm has a special place in the market because of its compact size and surprisingly good autofocus! However, two third-party lenses also worth mentioning here are the Sigma 56mm f1.4 and the Viltrox 75mm f1.2 as they are both close in price and focal length and stand in fierce competition with this Samyang offering. While the Samyang is a really good overall package I think it is still hard to justify the purchase of this lens, given the Viltrox and the Sigma seem to offer even better image quality while being quite a bit brighter. Accordingly, most people will pick the Sigma or the Viltrox over the Samyang. A recommendation for the Samyang can only be given if you want to have a combination of good autofocus, full weather sealing and an interesting rendering, which both the Sigma and the Viltrox cannot offer all at once.

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely agree with everything you say here! I really do wish I had some sort of experience with the Sigma and Viltrox lenses, but I'm not in the habit of talking about things that I have no personal experience with. Perhaps one day, I'll have the ability to compare. But, for now, the Samyang is, as you say, a solid offering because of its decent image quality, rapid AF, and size/weight proposition.

    Very useful soothing review for an interesting lens. I'm not sure though if you covered focus noise and WR status.
    Pluses: Lightweight, small, and nifty use of the focus ring for a smooth silent aperture ring!
    Negatives: contrast. That's important in a lens for me. I'm assuming that's due to the coatings? Hopefully this innovative brand can improve on that.
    A talk to the engineers would of course be a unique opportunity to watch.

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  Рік тому +1

      Hi Paul!
      The AF is indeed dead silent, which is great!
      i didn't notice a huge issue with contrast when working with this lens, but I'm used to correcting between the wildly differing contrasts of the Fujifilm lenses, so no biggie on my end!
      Cheers for watching!

    I have the Sigma 56mm for the x mount; are they both similar in focal length? Also, do you think the Samyang 75mm is still worth considering, or am I better off with a zoom lens?

  • @brownbear100
    @brownbear100 Рік тому

    An interesting and I think fair assessment of this lens. Maybe I missed it, but did you mention the function button? From what I gather from elsewhere they don't seem to do anything in stills mode. As you are on the development journey with this lens, has Samyang given any indication when/if it will be possible to use this for stills also?
    The elephant in the room you don't mention is the Viltrox 75 1.2. Perhaps out of respect for Samyang, but while comparing to the Fuji 56 and 90 is very valid, comparing to the Viltrox would be even more so! If only for the focal length, given I think it's fair to say they fulfill different roles.
    Personally I think both the Samyang and Viltrox both seem good options. I'm more drawn to the Samyang (I have the very good 12mm f2 AF) for travel where I will often want some of the background in focus and don't need or want everything blurred to nothing. My 90mm offers the same depth of field as the viltrox at the same distance anyway. But it is hard to ignore the fact I can buy the Viltrox right now for €498, or the Samyang for €479. This makes the Samyang look good, but rather overpriced next to its main competitor. This really should be under €400 even at launch. The Sony version is just over €300.
    Although there are signs the price is coming down, with some retailers including the lens station for under €500... I'd want to know that the custom button actually had a function for stills first!

    • @DylanGoldbyPhotographer
      @DylanGoldbyPhotographer  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching and for this extensive comment.
      To your main question, right now the button does nothing in stills mode and I haven't been able to get any indication from Samyang as to what they might be able to do with it. I think it would be really great to assign it to something for stills, as well. Even better would be the ability to assign it to a function of your choice through the Function Button menu of the camera, but as far as I know, that's not an ability Fujifilm provides.
      As for comparing to the Viltrox, that would only be possible if I had access to one! As much as I'd love to include that for reference, I don't have any experiance with the lens to draw on.

      It's a long focal length to compose with if you don't have IBIS. You'll just want to make sure your shutter speed is fast enough and you compose a little wider in case the framing moves with your press of the shutter button. Otherwise, no issues at all. It's a fast lens, so you'll get plenty of light when you need it.

      Done that, played with the settings until I’m ready to throw the thing in the garbage can! Best to leave it on the default auto focus settings, and use single auto focus for fastest speed and accuracy. Everything I’ve heard about continuous autofocus tells me it’s too inconsistent.
      I realize the type of street photography I do is very fast, as I am looking for something unexpected and by the time I raise my camera I’ve either got the shot or I haven’t. So if the auto focus isn’t there, I miss it! 🖖

    I normally do like your reviews and considered them credible. Not mentioning the very obvious direct competitor, which costs only a little more but outperforms this lens in every single aspect (with only size and weight remaining as valid points for the Samyang) leaves a very sour taste ... to put it very very mildly. Sorry, but this very biased review basically ruined your channel for me :-(

    • @SummersSnaps
      @SummersSnaps Рік тому +3

      Hang on, he is under no obligation to mention any other lenses, this is a review for just THIS lens. It's nice that he does some comparisons with Fujinon glass of different FL as it helps get a perspective on focal length, subject isolation and so on for this lens. I'm sure if Dylan had a Viltrox 75 he'd be happy to compare them head to head, but if he has no experience with the Viltrox then why mention it? Your statement that the Viltrox out performs this lens in every single aspect comes off a bit presumptuous, no? I'm yet to see a head to head video testing all aspects of the two lenses but even if the Viltrox does outperform it is a completely different beast in terms of weight and size. As an event tog I can't take everything with me, some of us might be willing to put up with a lenses short comings such as CA and speed if it can more practically fit in the bag and not tire us during a shoot...
      Anyway, I just think this comment is way off, this has no bearing on Dylan's credibility and as a lens review has way more information and food for thought than something Frost does.

    • @00-chris-0
      @00-chris-0 Рік тому +2

      @@SummersSnaps I disagree. I do believe he does have an obligation to at least mention the existence of the Viltrox lens and at least mention some basic facts (faster, all metal construction, aperture ring and of course also way heavier and bigger). But he basically denies that this lens even exists, stating that Samyang offers a focal length which other third parties do ignore.
      And of course he does not need to do a detailed comparison if he does not have a Viltrox at hand. This being a paid review (which he does disclose) and then only comparing it to 'convenient' competitors but not to the one obvious one still leaves a sour taste for me.
      And of course you are free to think whatever you like. I am only saying that this for me made him less credible that he was before which is my very personal opinion which I am also free to have 🙂

      Hi Chris, cheers for taking the time to watch. I agree. I would love to have mentioned the Viltrox lens. But, I wouldn't be able to offer any more than you could get from the spec sheet. I do my best here to avoid talking about things that I don't have any direct experience with. Should one come into my life, you better believe I'll compare it in depth. For now, though, the PDF they offer on their site will give you more details than I could!
