  • More and more third-party lens manufacturers have decided to give Fujifilm X Mount a chance, including Samyang. This is great for us X Mount photographers and videographers who haven't had many third-party options for the past ten years. Samyang previously had the 12mm f/2 for X Mount, but there was nothing new for a while. Although the Samyang 75mm f/1.8 is new for X Mount, it was previously available for Sony E-mount. Do we need another short telephoto lens? What makes this lens stand out compared to the competition? This is my unboxing and first look at this lens. Please wait for my first shooting impressions video as well as my full review for Fujilove Magazine. Let me know if there are any other third-party lenses you would like for me to review. Thanks for watching, liking, and commenting.

    Also taco many years ago in 2017 I messaged you on FB asking for HK photography location tips. You responded but I was in the middle of my trip and don’t think I got a chance to say thanks. So thank you! The trip went well and I had fun with my X100S. What a fun little camera. Long live hk

    Very, very interesting lens! I compare it to the Viltrox 85mm one. I had that one but sold it (which I regret, as usual). It was a focal range I rarely used and I needed money to finance new gear. So this lens is actually cheaper than the Viltrox 85mm...might pick this one up :) thanks for the Video!

      I have the Viltrox 85mm so I’ll definitely compare. The Samyang is much smaller and lighter though, but the Viltrox is actually a full-frame lens, so no surprise. Stay tune!

    Its available at least in the US direct from SamyangUS, where they discount to $450. 10% off everything actually. Samsung Germany often discounts, too. Just not right now.
    In Europe its about €469, or €499 including the lens station.I picked the lens up open box for €380, including lens station. Since I have the 12mm already, its handy to have. I think samyang really needs to get it below €400.
    Currently with the lens station you can adjust the AF Punt Setting (no, me neither) and the MF sensitivity. Cant programme the mode switch yet and there's no new firmware for this lens yet. The lens station isn't the most intuitive, and I managed to brick the lens first go - so there's that. But samyang has a de-bricking procedure in its user manual for the station, so all good again.
    Undoubtedly people will compare to the viltrox and maybe would consider instead of the 90.
    The Viltrox and the Samyang are clearly aimed at different audiences, or at least different purposes. I have often travelled with the 90, and when I do I'm not after magazine cover shots, just something a bit longer to complement a 23, 18 and 30, or even 16-55. And more and more I take the the 50-140 or 70-300 as 90 can be quite reatrictive. This will be the promary purpose this lens: travel and as a light travel option that can fit in a jacket pocket and won't be noticed.
    Because it serves a dofferent purpose, and is cheap, I also dont feel I need to sell my 56 or 90. Especially the 90 I like a lot - and it offers the same depth of field as the viltrox 75 at the same distance anyway. If had got the Viltrox, I'd probably end up selling both the 56 and 90, and I know it would be used less just because of its bulk.
    So... for lovers of this FL, an excuse to own both and consolidate!
    On the lens itself, its a very nice package. F1.8 is really more than enough at this FL most of the time. Its nice and sharp, rendering reminds of the 35 1.4. AF is fast, but sometimes can hunt a little to first aqcuire focus. Looking forward to using it some more.
    Samyang is actually reasonably good at supporting its lenses. The 12mm is now on firmware 1.3, incouding performance uogrades. I would really like to be able to use the custom switch to use the ring for aperture.

      thanks for all the extra info on the lens station. They didn't send me one to play with so I couldn't really comment on it. I hope I'll get a chance to program the lens to my preference, and hope for aperture control for stills one day. I think it would be a game changer for Samyang stills shooters on X Mount.

      @@bigheadtaco I was wondering about the Viltrox, but that thought quickly disappeared once I got to use the Samyang. A lot of potential with this lens, with very pleasing results

    I think more people will be comparing it to Viltrox's 75mm than the 80mm macro or 90mm.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  Рік тому +1

      True, although the size and weight makes them very different lenses. Much like comparing the Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 vs the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. It seems natural to compare them, but they’re targeting different needs. I’ll need to test the Viltrox eventually myself so stay tuned :-)

      @bigheadtaco Always tuned for your channel!
      Definitely different lenses when you account for size. I'm assuming the Viltrox will come out on top of any head to head image comparison once done, but I would still take the smaller, lighter Samyang any day of the week! As much as I love the OG 23mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2s, they usually get passed over to keep the kit smaller.

      @bigheadtaco  Рік тому +1

      @@jameskennedy8329 I use the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 over the Tamron and Fujifilm's own 2.8 just because of size and weight. From a technical standpoint it's the least sharpest of the 3, but size and weight wins for my personal needs at the studio

      @bigheadtaco I wish Fujifilm understood this about a lot of their customer base, a big reason why people would go for an apsc system is the advantage of a light and mobile kit. There's a reason, after some trial and error, that the original trio of lenses has become my go-to. I wouldn't have thought that would be the case when I switched over a couple years ago. The team that conceptualized the X system way back when knew the future me better than I did 😅

    • @brownbear100
      @brownbear100 Рік тому +1

      I certainly was. But very glad I picked up the Samyang and I know it will get a lot more use out of it because of its size alone. I already have the 90, and will keep it. The viltrox looks interesting, but it just wouldn't get used as much. I had the Pentax 70mm f2.4 ... a compact lens around this FL with decent close focussing so you can use comfortably indoors, too, is great to have. I knew f2.4 could produce great results, f1.8 is nothing to be sneezed at. Same depth of field as a 56mm f1.0 at the same distance to subject...

  • @TheJ_G
    @TheJ_G Рік тому +1

    Did you happen to notice if it has any focus breathing? The viltrox unfortunately has some pretty noticeable focusing breathing. I’d gladly trade off the faster viltrox for a slightly slower, no focus breathing, samyang 75.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  Рік тому +1

      I’ll definitely test that. Since they’re promoting this lens for video, I hope it has very little breathing…

    Got a really good deal on this lens, so it was a no brainer. Size & weight mater, so for me it was worth giving up 1.2. only other option at this focal length is the Kipon f2.4, great little compact sharp mf lens but fringing is a problem.

  • @JayGrapherTh
    @JayGrapherTh Рік тому

    looks really nice and compact - and "upgrade" to the viltrox 85mm - small sacrifice for the 10mm but I feel the 85 might be too zoomed in and 75 is more versatile.
    though I'll like to question if its shooting video - would f2 or the new fuji f1.4 lens are "better"? I shoot low light, thus wondered about focal length since its going to be a prime lens. I used the 16-55 on the gimbal and was zooming in and out and feel just the middle ground 23mm will have to be the choice to get wide but need to walk close to get close up.
