I think it’s worth noting that monopolies are always bad for consumers in the long term. I’m very apprehensive about Microsoft’s very aggressive acquisitions recently, we don’t want another Disney on our hands

I will join you in huffing that copium, any prospect of TF2 content (even at the cost of Microsoft monopolising) is so damn enticing.

Thing about monopolies, nobody cares about them unless they are really bad, and even then when they are broken up they are owned by the same group making it useless or they become an oligarchy

      Also
It would be nice helped the indie scene in gaming
If they treat indie gaming as a goldmine for passion and without the corporatist view then this could be a big W for gaming as a whole,
especially when you think xbox could provide the streaming service on mobile
This might be a pipe dream

On one side, I hate consolidations and monopolies because of what they mean to the industry
On the other, Activision Blizzard was in such a desperate state that at this point, Phil Spencer taking over is a lot better than whatever the fuck Bobby Kotick is doing

    • @baitreview

It really isn't so. Even with this purchase, Xbox is still only the third largest gaming brand once it comes to profitability, still sitting behind Sony and Tencent. Buying Activision does not in any way shape or form inhibit others from competing

    • @dotplusdot5961
      @dotplusdot5961 2 роки тому

@@baitreview I fail to understand, as one of three massive corporations which essentially are buying up almost any game studio they can, it seems to be acting as such, either buying out possible competitors or leaving aforementioned competitors to fight in what's honestly not the videogame market, if your game doesn't get much initial recognition (which most name-brand companies provide, however there are exceptions), odds are, it never will.

    • @baitreview
      @baitreview 2 роки тому

@@dotplusdot5961 Microsoft has recently only made two major acquisitions in the form of Bethesda and Activision. These two are NOT essential for competition, meaning that acquiring both of them would hardly strike the FTC as a monopoly. If Microsoft were to buy a couple more companies within the near future then they could find some trouble, but even then it would be unlikely considering how gaming is an industry considered to be very easy once it comes to introducing new competition

the enthusiasm behind this is honestly disconcerting.
my main concern is how games-as-service subscriptions don't really help reimburse the cost made for non-distinct/indie titles. despite the idea of several games for a low fee is just more attractive in general than making a desicion to put out money for a title at a time, it really only helps to homogenize popular/tried-and-true mechanics and aspects of games that could survive such a model.
and then there's not being able to consume games the same way you'd do netflix/hulu/etc. shows & movies. (people don't binge game after game) a title could end up not getting their due attention because it was on game pass for only a limited time before getting replaced due to space/cost.
not to mention microsoft inheriting the responsibility of ABK's freshly unraveled controversies, and big tech's resistance to unionize in general.
i have no doubt valve will attempt to fend for itself but who cares, this acquisition is gonna freaking bite.

    I mean...
Microsoft can make TF2 but also break it. While Valve is bad, FaceIT ultimately proved to be even more delusional.
    Imagine TF2 but:
    - You have to pay AND pay every month
    - "offensive" taunts and voicelines are cancelled
    - text chat is moderated
    - Community workshop is no longer supported
    - community servers are gone
    Etc
TF2 is hard game to oversee because half the fun of this game is fact that it is wild , free and chaotic. It is basically 4Chan of video games.
Don't get me wrong, there are obviously horrible people who abuse this freedom and i would like to see them gone (e. i. people who spray pornography should be condemened )
    BUT
This freedom means alternative gamemodes like Class Wars , Vs SH, Dodgeball. This freedom means wacky team chat discussion where people quarrel what kind of bear is best, complain about their life or randomly decide to all go Fat Scout for no reason. This freedom means that you can join server with MrPalladin and Dane - and not know it because alliasing exist. This means meme strategies, creativity of workshop and much much more.
If they will handle TF2 like they did with Minecraft, go ahead.
But if they try to copy FaceIT and turn TF2 into sanitised and dead husk... then no.

I know there are lots of people out there saying that Microsoft buying TF2 is a bad thing and we should not continue feeding money into this mega corporation, but honestly, with the current state of the game, I would be more than happy if TF2 is under new management. They have made some of the best games in the world and made some of them better (I'm looking at you, Minecraft). Like the Medic once said, "There is nothing wrong with playing God so long as you are good at [it]."

Why are you saying this as if you WANT tf2 on the gamepass? Why should we want anything on gamepass, why should we want to give more and more money and power to a single mega corporation, and why should we move even further away from being able to actually OWN our games

    • @MrMonamu

He's not talking about MS buying TF2, that most likely won't happen. He's saying this purchase of Blizzard will shock Valve into putting more time in their already existing, and possibly future games. It would be pretty dumb of Valve to do nothing about this, but only the future will tell.
Edit: And also, if they do buy TF2, then we should accept that. We can't just complain about how TF2 is dying and then proceed to pass up the biggest opportunity that can revive the game. I dislike the current state of TF2 and will take any chance to have it brought back.
