  • This is my 2nd part of the Elegoo Saturn 3 12K review - comparing it side by side with the Saturn 2. The improvements go beyond resolution - this is a solid resin printer.

    Awesome! I am the ELEGOO discord, and one user actually replaced the one loud fan on their Mars 3 with two silent ones. It is great that ELEGOO made the fans silent when idle, since the Saturn 3 now supports WiFi, which makes it convenient to have the printer on and idle.

    I love videos that point out specific technical details and both the pro/cons and human experience that may contradict the otherwise obvious upgrade--well done !! So my experience/history with casting is limited to lost wax. Can you utilize one of these prints and burn it out cleanly to cast it in bronze or aluminum, stainless steel, etc.

    Hi, I'm looking at buying a Saturn 3 but totally new to 3d printing. I'm planning to download 3d model templates but not design my own. How big is the learning curve just to print existing 3d models. Its it relatively straightforward or will there be a bit of practice before getting good results?
    Also just wondering whether it's safe to print using resins in a home environment. Is there any risk of fumes/toxin build up and if the usb air purifier enough to clear this? Many thanks

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  3 місяці тому

      Resin printing is not so hard to obtain impressive results. It is far easier than with Filament printers. You just need to master leveling the build plate. Resin has a cleaning and curing process that can be tedious… cleaning with alcohol, like, two or 3 times, and drying well with a hair dryer… removing supports, then curing (could be in the sun, but a curing station is VERY recommended and convenient). Results are always impressive. There are a few things to learn… you should work far from windows - or do it at night, otherwise UV light starts curing the resin before it is actually dry and ready to actually cure. The smell is a reality. If you can do it an a garage, or a ventilated room it helps a lot… although, if the room temperature is under 20°C, the Resin doesn’t behave well. 25°C is the ideal temperature. I printed a few things when we lived on an apartment. It was not nice. The smell was evident. Today I have a dedicated space for my printers and work. I leave it printed at night when I am not there.

    What about the health aspect of these printers? Are dangerous fumes formed? Great video! Thanks a lot!

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah: Resins are… nasty. There is no other word 😂 The Air Purifier helps a lot with the smell - almost nothing - while it is printing with the lid closed. But when it is open, and when you need to wash, than pour the resin back to the bottle… all this processing has a bad smelling. Some resins are nastier then others… some are almost pleasant. The norm is: you need a ventilated space - but without natural light anywhere close to where you will process the prints and deal with the resin.

    Yeah your saturn 2 needs the update! I got mine 6 weeks ago no fan until press print and shuts off when finished and pausing! Elegoo fixed this after Faux hammers video you just have to update it! I got a march 2023 date build on mine so was done out the factory! I am still getting the saturn 3 ultra next week as was going to get another saturn 2 anyway but then these came out so I'll pick one up as one is just not enough! I have 2 smaller anycubics mono 2 there great but need a second larger one, thats the way you get fast prints is having more than 2 printers going at the same time!

    My wife's mom preordered the Saturn 4 for as a gift, but really when I compare the specs of the 4 to the 3 it looks like the 3 is better!?! The 3 and 4 have the same specs (resolution and all) other than the 3 has a 1" (25 mm) greater Z build length, AND the 3 works with a plug-n-play air purifier whereas for the 4 you have to buy a separate system... Why would someone buy the 4? Is that fancy flip lid really worth it? If that's all it offers then personally I think not.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  13 днів тому +1

      Look, I think that the new bed system without the ball head, the latch and the automatic bed leveling makes the Saturn 4 way more easy to print. The cover is an extra convenience. What really made me happy was the bed and not having to adjust it. I will print a whole lot more with the 4. Anyway, you are right: the 3 was very good already. But it is more expensive anyways, isn’t it? I would spend the difference in resins or a washing/curing station if you don’t have any.

    Resins för functional parts... ? What? When? Soooon I hope! I have looked for this for some time (hoping it will not cost too much extra from ordinary resin)! 😉 How much does it differ from resins like "ABS-like" resins?

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  8 місяців тому +1

      Oh, no! ABS-Like is definitely not for functional parts. I tried Sunlu Nylon-like and it is MUCH better. Prints better, looks really like plastic later, tougher - but it shrinks a bit, like all resins. We need to calculate a shrinking factor and it needs a week to shrink to the final size… Yeah: resins for functional parts is not straightforward - but for really small parts it can be nice. As long as you have time to wait for it to reach the final size.

    Dead pixels on the S3 in the microscope image?

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  10 місяців тому +1

      Oh, it’s not dead pixels - it’s a pattern. To my understanding it was something on the image they used as “Exposure Test”. Need to check if it is still there when “cleaning vat” or when printing.

    Great video!
    Under your microscope, we can see some black dots at regular spacings... 3:07
    Any guess what this could be?
    I had a defective saturn8k I sent back. It had defective areas on screen, and on those printed areas I saw regular spaced dots ...

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  10 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! I can see a “diamond” spaced distribution of darker pixels. I have no idea yet if it translates into the prints - and if it could be noticeable at naked eyes.
      To my needs it prints perfectly - but I am super curious and following every user’s group of printers that use these new 12k Mono LCDs.
      To me the biggest discussion is ACF films vs NFEP films - which types of prints are affected by the ACF micro texture. Maybe Jewelry makers will decide for NFEP, and most other users will prefer the speed and ease of print that ACF brings.

    what about the dead pixels at 3:08 in saturn 3 lol

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  9 місяців тому +1

      Oh, I looked all my Resin printer’s LCDs under the microscope: there are ALWAYAS dead pixels scattered here and there. But it really doesn’t matter: a single dead pixel in the middle of the solid won’t affect: resin will solidify just because of the light that spills from the pixels around it. The worst scenario is a vertical wall that goes up exactly on that pixel and it might “scratch” a vertical line (but that’s a very odd corner case).
