    9H on the mohs hardness scale, where 5 is glass and 10 is diamond. 9 is pretty bloody hard but it doesn't mean it's not brittle. It could probably stand up to a fair bit of force but when it breaks, I'm guessing it's going to be similar to what you see on your cell phone.
    As for the fresnel, I'm surprised it took this long to implement. The idea was floated a couple of years back when paraLEDs were being found in the mod space.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  2 роки тому +1

      That was a very informative comment! ❤️ “Mohs Scale”, I learned something today 😁
      I totally agree with you on the Fresnel aspect - it’s used in several applications already… but, well, it is the first MSLA 3D Printer to use it under the LCD that I know of, and indeed it looks like an excellent idea!

    • @laserclowns8402
      @laserclowns8402 2 роки тому +1

      @@GeekDetour Yeah, the first commercial printer, as far as I know. I started playing around with it some time ago in my Photon Classic when I read about the mod.
      The fresnel is definitely a better solution for them than their previous single lens design. The paraLED is nice but expensive and has heat issues. Elegoo also had problems with the focal length in the early paraLEDs found in their Mars Pro.
      Anyway, I'm looking forward to this next generation of printers 👍

      You are correct about the Mohs scale but The H at the end refers to pencil hardness (pencils range from 9b to 9h which is the hardest). The test is carried out using the pencil at 45 degrees and a 9h pencil should not scratch the screen protector. As you say very hard.

      Hmm, apparently youtube deletes comments with links? Never knew.
      Anyway, as long as the Saturn 2 motherboard exposes a serial port (not sure yet), it should be possible to control with a raspberry pi zero W (it's been done on a Mars Pro). Wifi is then on the pi, and same for the camera. Also plan to have an MCU running a PID program and hooked up to the heater. I'm not sure I'll be able to fit everything (including Noctua fans) inside the enclosure though.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  Рік тому

      Oh, fitting everything inside to me is the less challenging thing… Actually controlling a resin printer from a Raspberry Pi (just like we do with Filament printers using OctoPrint) is the novelty to me - until very recently I don’t think it was possible. Maybe I am missing something! 🤔😅

    • @alexbaronov4736

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  Рік тому

      Hi there! Thanks a LOT! Look: the resolution of Resin 3D Printers is far better than filament prints. Resin finishing is smoother, you can print parts with less clearance - the precision is indeed better. BUT: the difficult part is finding resins with the mechanical properties you need for practical / mechanical parts. Most resins are very brittle or can wear very fast under friction. Engineering resins are quite more expensive - they exist, but can cost 4 times more.

    hi. does the print plate of the saturn 2 fit in the mercury x wash machine? maybe without the metal basket?

    • @GeekDetour

      Excellent question - I tested it but I wasn’t recording 😭😆 It is exactly as you said: with the metal basket, the holders of the basket touch the plate. If you remove the basket, the plate of the Saturn 2 can go in and touch the sides of the tank, I guess close to the 6 Liters Mark… it doesn’t really reach the 5L mark, too narrow for it.

    I have a question and need an honest answer.
    Are you happy with this printer? Is it good for its price? I really want to buy it and I would burn all of my money on it (and the accessories), so a yes or no on if this printer is worth it would be awesome ^^.
    I really like your way of making videos, you are charismatic, you have a charming style and the camera work is amazing! Really, really good video overall!

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  Рік тому +2

      Thank you so much for the kind words! 🤗 Honest opinion, of course! First: I didn’t buy the printer. At this point, most of my printers were sent from brands, for me to review them in my channel. That said, I try to share my objective experience with each product.
      The Saturn 2 has an excellent price, considering it has a 28 microns x/y resolution (one of the highest on the market) on a very comfortable, big build volume. If you have the money to buy it (plus resins you want, plus curing/cleaning station), you will be making an excellent purchase. Mechanically, it is an excellent printer as well - and more silent than the Mars 3.
      I love the results of Resin 3D Printing - But it has so much more involved: cleaning, curing… and, really, I think cleaning/curing stations are MANDATORY. If I didn’t have them, I would certainly print even less with resin printers. If you are short on money, maybe buying a cleaning/curing bundle + the new Mars 3 Pro would be a more useful deal than buying just the Saturn 2.
      Elegoo makes good quality products - I have a bunch of Arduino boards and kits from Elegoo as well. The price is always fair.
      Do you participate on the Official Elegoo Mars or the Official Elegoo Saturn user groups on Facebook? It is a great community as well.

    Was wondering if the UV source is more powerful compared to Saturn S?

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  Рік тому

      Hi there! I would love to have a way to give you a number (like, some measuring instrument) - but I actually don’t even have the Saturn S to compare. BUT, I remember seeing people reporting lower exposure times per layer.
      UV strength is not the only thing. How much light each new LCD screen actually allows to go through gets better at every generation. The parallel light is a big deal - and the fact the source is not a big matrix of LEDs anymore is EXCELLENT! Now the light is very uniform. Everything related to the UV light on the Saturn 2 is far better.

    Every year these printers become obsolete as newer printers with higher resolution screens become available and printer manufacturers refuse to give upgrade kits to existing printers so they can upgrade to higher resolution screens.
    It's a business anti consumer practice they're doing, best is to wait for higher resolution printer to become available next year in the pre-order phase.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  2 роки тому

      Well, thinking this way, which is the best year to get a printer? Because next year’s printer will also be “just one year away” from not being the best possible product 🤣
      My take on obsolescence is: when you need one, you buy the best one available (at a reasonable price, like the Saturn 2 or the Mars 3 Pro it is not worth financing bleeding edge tech). And once you have it, use it until it really doesn’t serve you well (it can be many years of service). There is no reason to change every year unless you are a crazy enthusiast or your business depends on it, etc.

    • @TheIcemanModdeler

      @@GeekDetour I don't just print stuff for myself i print stuff professionally as i plan on starting a business, also i'm a professional senior 3D character artist and i make my own stuff so i want a printer that has as few layer lines as possible so all my work shows up in the print so that the postprocessing is as minimal as possible. I have 2 4k printers now and because every year we get a new one if i sell one it won't be worth it and printer manufacturers don't give us any way to upgrade the screens. Printers now with 8k screens seem to have barely any layer lines, think i will wait for 10k printers, i also want a silent printer so it doesn't keep me up at night and maybe a resin pump or sensor so it stops when it runs out.

    • @GeekDetour
      @GeekDetour  2 роки тому

      Everything you said makes perfect sense. When you already have equipment that “works” for your projects, you tend do wait for more significant changes. To me, I wish they would put a VAT with controlled temperature (since the resins don’t print nice under 20°C). Anyway, from 4K to 8k the difference is huge, I think it already got to a sweet spot between price and resolution.

    • @TheIcemanModdeler
      @TheIcemanModdeler 2 роки тому +1

      @@GeekDetour Yeah, will wait for a 10k screen though, haven't printed in a year, been busy with other stuff but i plan on getting back very soon, been painting one of my statues and it's getting close to finish. Someone is testing a new 7k screen for the Transform but because it isn't an official upgrade he has to do all the work himself which is why it's annoying how printer manufacturers treat their customers.
      Initially they said resin printers would be modular and upgradeable but they lied.
      The Mega 8K is intersting however it seems to be slower than the Transform, maybe due to a slightly large platform, something in between the medium and large size printer would be perfect.
