  • Hey guys, what's up? This is how I made Geralt's goathide gauntlets
    It really pained me to not put my fancy-pants intro bit with the wax seal into this video, but it just didn't fit in with the opening very well. Speaking of; I tried something a little bit different with the opening, let me know if you liked it!
    I feel like I rambled on long enough in the video to basically cover everything, but as always please leave any comments/questions/criticisms that you might have, and I'll be sure to stress internally about whether I should be hearting comments or just liking them.

    Start by pushing in the finger tips. Push the tips into itself. Push as far as you can get it then pull the tips out the bottom or right side out

    You need a turning rod to turn it inside out, a wooden dowel would work

    You've outdone yourself, Grant, these are absolutely beautiful!
    I knew they'd come together in the end but I was still holding my breath while you were attaching the gauntlet to the glove, excellent tension in storytelling. 10/10. :)

    1. What weight of leather are you using?
    2. what prompted you to cut the middle and ring finger out of the palm side of the pattern?
    3. what changes did you have to make to the pattern to get it fit properly?
    4. If you had to do it over, what would you change?
    5. Do you think its better to stitch it all by hand, or could you machine stitch some of it?
    I ask because I will making something similar for a Elvar Mann type High Republic Jedi in the next year which requires gloves with long cuffs that get covered with a bracer.

      Oh boy! Best of luck in making your own gloves, this was very rewarding for me.
      1: this is goathide that's about 1.5-2.0mm thick.
      2: the fingers need to be wide enough to wrap around the sides of your fingers, so they need to be wider in total than the width of the glove; therefore they need to be cut that wide and added on later.
      3: mostly extending the fingers and getting the junction at the knuckles to sit in the right spot. These gloves are VERY tight.
      4: minor pattern adjustments, and honestly not much else. I'm still extremely happy with these!
      5: you can stitch it however you like, I personally prefer hand stitching, and a saddle stitch will always be stronger than a machine stitch because the thread crosses over in each stitch hole.
      Hope this all helped! Thanks for the questions

    You could stitch with a nedele through the tip of all fingers, make a knot or something behind it and pull all strings.

    • @Cxizent
      @Cxizent  2 роки тому

      I've had this thought! I'd run a looped thread through so both ends stick out the wrist, then the whole thread can be pulled out once the glove is reversed.
      I definitely want to try making another pair in future, so I'll try it then

    These look remarkable, especially love the decorative stitching! Just curious, was it a design element from the game or some other practical decision to make the two inner fingers on the palm side as separate pieces and sew them in?

    • @Cxizent
      @Cxizent  3 роки тому +2

      Thankyou! I can't get enough of the butterscotch coloured thread lol
      The finger pieces are separate purely out of practicality; in order to get the volume needed to make up for the lack of fourchettes, the fingers needed to be wider than the width of the palm.

    Most difficult part of crafting: Wait! Truer words were never spoken.
    The international language of stuborn bits "c'mon, c'mon."
    Oh, do not use fabric scissors on something that has contact cement on! I'm so glad you didn't. Fabric scissors are holy.

    • @Cxizent
      @Cxizent  3 роки тому

      These are from www.studsandspikes.com , specifically the size 13 pyramids. I will warn you that if you're not from the US that the imperial thread is a really unusual size, so if you're planning on getting longer screws that might be a consideration.

    Okay, so I have been trying to make a pair of gloves for a whole year.
    My fingers twist horribly.
    How did you get yours to only twist slightly?

    • @Cxizent
      @Cxizent  2 роки тому

      I think that the twisting of the fingers is related to how splayed out the pattern is; my index finger points out slightly away from the middle finger on the pattern, and the index finger is only slightly rotated.
      I plan to address this in later revisions, but great eye for noticing. I hope that was helpful!

      I have read that you have to stretch the hide before you cut, stretch it in two directions, But I’m not sure if that is just veggie tanned or chrome tanned as well,. And I’m not sure how exactly to do the stretching. Did you stretch yours?
      Also, I just saw a Video where the gentleman says that the wrists of the gloves need to be on the spine of the hide. Or did you say that?
      I’ve done 4 different hides, suede, two different deer hides and a Mirabelle lamb skin (in the hope that more expensive is easier to use). No. It wasn’t.
      I love your false four bets! Cool idea!

      Fourchets

    • @Cxizent
      @Cxizent  2 роки тому +1

      This was some veg tan goat hide, and to be honest with you I didn't pre-stretch the hide, nor did I pay particular attention to where the spine of the hide was. I mainly placed the pattern to avoid the overly stretchy areas at the edge of the hide, in order to make sure that the part I was cutting out was uniform. I wish I could be more helpful but there wasn't really anything special I did to the goat hides, sorry! I did absolutely slather them in neatsfoot oil, which did help in making them supple. What are you using to condition your veg tan?
      And thanks! It took way too much effort, but I really like the slim fit of the fingers without fourchettes!
