You praise the special effects but bro, go and look at the movie again. In the top right section (our left) of kabals helmet-there is literally the head of a wrench glued onto his helmet lol. The end scene in the gym also has plastic wrap on the lockers and columns to make it looks like ice. When sub zero falls with a charred face he has bad CGI eyes and mouth 👁 👄 👁 while he is laying sideways. Mileena spends the whole movie with really bad blood effects painted on her cheeks. When scorpion breaks out of the ice just before killing sub-zero, they CGI’d his arm over his torso so that it wouldn’t move while he “broke his arm free” of the ice and it looks so bad. When the gardening dagger is stuck into scorpion at the beginning and slices up you can see it doesn’t react with his body cause it’s poorly CG’d overlay. When the “ice lockers” are opened at the very end you can clearly see it’s plastic wrapped cause the locker doesn’t break open from the rest it just swings open normally and they put a cracking sound over it but didn’t have any ice cracking lol They did this stuff cause they blew their budget on other shots in the movie and then realized they had to try and stay consistent for reshoots lol they have some good special effects (reptile and goro) and then REALLY bad cheap stuff in between. Watch it again and I promise you’ll see where the budget just falls apart. Anyone claiming this movie has good special effects is falling prey to the 30% show of good stuff that is masking the 70% GOD AWFUL effects in between everything else
I am completely agree with your list, awesome job dude ❤️
The 2021 version had a budget of $55 million, not $95 million.
YOU ARE LITERALLY SH..... on the 1995 movie for what? who wrote your script?
the 1995 is classic and you playing it off like its crap, ever sentense you throw shade, how is it a comparison when diss the mk1995 version in every point? thumbs down
The New is brutal in the kill
I'm impressed that the 1995's 'Mortal Kombat' movie budget was 18 million US dollars, and then made over 122 million globally.
Yeah even after marketing cost and whatnot MK 1995 probably cleared triple it's budget. I would say that is pretty impressive. I see why they jumped right into Annihilation. Which was a bad movie and a box office failure.
I saw it 5 times in the theater lol
1995 still is a good movie and i love 2021 too.
Well, it was released at the height of MK's popularity in the 90s. MK was everywhere, it was still a novelty to rip someone's spine out. So it benefited from being released at the perfect time, before it was expected for video game movies to be bad. And the movie overall is just a good time. They didn't make a great movie, but they made a great movie that you can watch a million times and always have fun with it. So far I still like the original more, but the new one hasn't had time to really grow on me. I really loved it though, especially Kano and Kabal. They were absolutely perfect.
@@Brushless707 God annihilation was the worst movie I've ever seen next to birdemic. The graphics and the horrible lines. Sub zero and scorpion were on screen for like 2 minutes and literally just disappeared. Rain deserved way more. Shao Kahn looked like a punk. Jax had metal sleeves rather then actual arms. Mileena had like 2 minutes of screen time. Shinnok looked like a freaking cult member. I can keep going if you'd like :)
MK 1995 Shang Tsung is the real Shang Tsung. Just look at that face when he says "you soul is mine"
Best villain scowl.
I don't really think bcs the shang tsung in the game is really "passive aggressive" or you can say that he's never showing his rage unlike in the 1995 movie
yea him raiden and lu kang in the new one would be a master piece
They brought the actor back in MK11 to voice Shang Tsung.
@@teedee9326 they also modeled the character after him
Love how you totally ignored the fact that 95 MK had protagonist that actually existed in the MK universe... were in 2021 we got Cole who conveniently got plot armor and killed Goro and helped kill sub zero before the actual tournament
It wasn't the real Sub-zero it was Bi-han his brother how is now Noob saibot
Looked like he was wearing that plot armor when Goro was hitting him on the back.
You mean that Cole will be the new “Alice” from the Resident Evil films?????
@@Mike-tk5st before the current Sub Zero Bi-Han was the real Sub Zero you unseasoned toast
@@Mike-tk5st cannon wise, it’s supposed to be quan chi that killed scorpions family.
Scorpion comes after Bi Han thinking it was him.
Then bi Han defeats scorpion twice.
Scorpion gets revenge in the tournament (Third meet up)
Younger sub zero fights and defeats scorpion.
Scorpion finds out it was quan chi impersonating Bi Han and there’s innocent blood on his hands.
The movie was just like “scorpion popular” make him hero, he has son now & Sub Zero bad guy🤷🏻♂️
Cage punching goro in the nads is classic
Well Goro Deserves it no one should break a 500 dollar pair of Sunglasses.
Punch him in the nards!
Shokan don’t have nards!
**punches Goro in the balls**
Shokan have nards!
Goro dropped several dozen men onto painful fish tank rocks.. Island Lore is that Linden Ashby is a legend
And Im sorry but other than the main Theme Johnny's theme with the little riff at the beginning is quite bad-ass and when he rolls up and takes his sunglasses off it still makes me think "awwwww shit its going down"
“Those were $500 sunglasses asshole!”
I watched Mortal Kombat when it hit the theaters in 1995. Today it may look a bit cheesy, but it was a total blast at that time. Having watched both at the time they were released, I can say for sure 1995 version is not only the best Mortal Kombat movie, but the most memorable movie based on a videogame ever made.
I still think the original is better
Detective Pikachu and Sonic would like to have a word
The soundtrack is also amazing, and you can never leave during the end credits
Facts
The og Shang Tsung was the best character. He was terrifying when I was a kid and kind of still is haha
He played that part perfectly. Whoever plays that character has to set a new bar. This new guy from Dark Knight playing him has potential I think, but the way they wrote his character in this film was just boring and didnt do shit. No punches, no shapeshifting, just taking one soul. Hopefully he has a bigger role in the next.........and hope we get to see Quan-Chi too
*"Your soul is mine"* that line was delivered with pure menace from the OG Shang Tsung, Nostalgia.
Carey Tagawa is legendary.

Christopher Lambert did wear 'the hat' though ... when Raiden first shows up and owns Liu Kang in the village
Thank you. This Raiden even with a UFO as a hat could not hold a bulb to the '95 one.

This video is just another typical script for journalistic bs.
Christopher Lambert looks nothing like Raiden. Even with the hat in that one scene, his Raiden is way worse than Raiden in MK 2021.

it's the story line that make 1995 the better film
When I hear “Reptile” and that techno music I get chills up my spine

@@crazycat1232 because they’re clowns 😂. This video said the 1995 film actors didn’t look like the characters but clearly they didn’t watch the new film either. 2021 Shang tsung looks like any other Asian with some emperor armor on and when does Shang tsung ever have that bs on? Never. Sub zero doesn’t even have the right color of blue and his armor looks wack as well. Then we got Down syndrome kung lao, kpop star Liu kang, buff Steve Harvey as jax, and literally some random white guy that doesn’t even look like Kano 😂
I love that they used the voice from the game to announce him it gets me every time 😂
I missed good music in 2021. The only good music is some remake of the original one.
I dont hate the 2021 version, its okay and I enjoyed it. But Idc what anyone says, I prefer the 95 reptile fight above the 21 version. As far as I know in the reptile fight there even was a broken rip envolved. Cause it wasnt all CGI but real kicking and throwing. They even edited a splittered bone noise in the fight when it happened.
Personally i really enjoyed the Cage vs Scorpion fight. Dont get all the hate on the CGI part. Looked awful at some times, but to say that the film is worse cause the effects is worse is like saying Last Jedi is the best Star Wars film because it has the most impressive effect.
Good CGI is like a cherry on the top of the cake. But I rather have a nice cake than I would like to have a cherry without a cake.
I know right!

The 2021 move starred a nonexistent character and had NO TOURNAMENT. How is it more faithful?
I thought so too.
Sadly that was a studio demand that couldn’t get ignored, other than that, they did a relatively good job bringing the characters to life, Kabal being a real good example, and the story may not be a good one, but it’s a relatively good adaptation
Not
Exactly.
That Protagonist called Cole is like Alice frm Resident Evil Films.
"Get over here" scariest phraae ever because my mother and scorpion uses it

@@ernestcamacho6398 the chancla part just hurts my ass
Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was so good at playing Shang-tsung that he is always Shang-tsung no matter what MK it is.
Even the game model looks like him
Yeah, he's tough to beat. I think 2021's tsung was a bit hollow in comparison, same with 2021's liu kang. Mainly just because cary and robin were so good in '95 it set that bar
1,000,000 percent agree. Liu Kang, Shang Tsung and Raiden were far better in the original
MK's cinematic soul is his. Forever
Didn't his, "Your Soul is MINE!" actually get canonized into the game? I mean, we all knew Shang could do it, but after it was said in the movie, they opted to add it in, or am I remembering that quote wrong?
95 version clearly had a better story, soundtrack and nostalgic feel to the game. Of course 21 would have better special effects, if it didn’t then I’d be even more disappointed. As far as the fighting goes, the original game didn’t have detailed fighting styles like the current games. So of course 21 would take the win for better fighting. I still say 95 was better.
A better story? So a fighting tournament and Liu Kang wanting revenge is better than Shan Tsung sending Sub Zero(Micheal Myers) to kill all of Earth's champions to prevent the tournament with Scorpian's and Sub zero's back story being the main point?
@@robertwalker4130 I agree that the character and powers of Sub Zero are way better than the 1995 version, but when it comes to the other characters they weren’t well written in the 2021 version.
@@New_Blue_2 Agreed. But the world building made a little more sense in '21, and the Sub-Zero/Scorpion relationship was a strongpoint. I thought way too much of the movie took place at the Raiden headquarters camp.
This is a prequel btw.
@@jon4715 The majority of the story of MK 21 is utterly baffling if you know the MK storyline. The Mortal Kombat tournament was set up to make sure the shit Shang Tsung did in the movie was not allowed. Not only that but the storyline between Bi-han and Scorpion is comical considering in the lore it is known that Quan Chi was the one who killed the Shirai Ryu. Also the whole "Dragon Mark" is a laughable attempt to excuse powers in a world where magic, gods and fictional tech should and do exist. The whole Dragon mark was just an excuse to force an uneeded new character into the storyline and to create some silly conflict in Sonya Blade's "Worthiness".
Sub-Zero: always speak in Chinese
Scorpion: always speak in Japanese
Special move: "Get over Here!" Englishtality 😆🤘

the way scorpion said "get over here" was how a japanese person would say it.
Besides, he introduce himself as Scorpion.

One of my favorite lines from the original. Raiden: “The fate of billions will depend upon you, hahahaha.....sorry.”
Lambert ad libbed that.
One of the best lines!
Still the best Raiden
It is funny how Raiden is totally ripped off of "Lightning" from Big Trouble In Little China" yet that character seemed more powerful than Raiden.
Yes!
Cole's character wasn't needed.
Mortal Kombat 1995 is still amazing. I loved it in 6th grade, and still enjoy it now. MK's Scorpion vs Johnny Cage fight is one of the most creative, intense fights in a movie.
Especially with Fear Factory delivering the sound
Reptile vs liu kang

Honestly, I actually enjoyed the fights of the original than the reboot, johnny vs scorpion was great, liu vs that black dude (who is Hakim Altston a freaking kick boxing champion) and sub zero was eye catching, johnny vs goro was entertaining (Especially that nut crack)... and even though reptile's background was silly his entrance and his fight with liu along with reptile's own movie battle theme was the best one.
They also tried to have characters think. Johnny cage would never beat Goro, but then he hit him in the balls and tricks him off a cliff. That was smart. Throwing water at subzero is clever. Nothing like this was even tried in this new movie.
@Jose Mexican Mexican Yup. Johnny has a plan vs Goro, he first gave him a debuff then put him in a disadvantegous position to throw him off at. And Goro not landing hits was fine, he had already shown kombat prowess when he bodied like 20 people by then, one after another

First movie: Everything happens during the Tournament
Reboot: Everything is happening BEFORE the Tournament...Also, Cole.
Fans: I hate this movie it isnt like the games were everything happens in the tournament
The games: Only 3 take place in the tournament. The other 10 (or more) are from other things (Shao Khan conquering Earthrealm, Shinnok, Deadly Alliance, Onaga, Armageddon, vs DC Universe, Kronika, Sub Zero, Jax and Shaolin Mobks)
They are literally doing the same thing the games have been doing since the release. Expanding the fighter roster. And i thought they actually did a pretty good job with his character given that they had no source material to familiarize people with him
It's not that the movie was bad, its just I felt like the movie would've work more if it was really tournament aside from everything is happening BEFORE the said tournament. They added some plots that I think were unnecessary such as gaining powers from the dragon mark (though I guess so they can introduce Johnny Cage's power?). Regardless, it still was a fun movie and might enjoy the sequel more.
@@migueljosephicasiano8862 i agree, but after watching this movie I keep asking myself "Why didnt Shang Tsung do what he did here in the games?" There aint a rule that forbidden to kill the Earthrealm Champions, also is more like an overture, is the first movie of the director and movie games hasnt the best luck so they decide that instead of making everything they could (the tournament and all the character) they kept it for the sequel, also for introduciong the character so on the tournament we already met him and skipped the part of introducing. ROUND 2: SPECIAL EFFECTS AND PRODUCTION VALUE
The 1995 film’s special effects were low quality (e.g., Reptile’s lizard form), but more sets were featured that conveyed the feel and lore of the franchise. Some major sets included Liu Kang’s ancestral homeland, multiple parts of Shang Tsung’s island (e.g., the halls, rooms, roads, and arenas), the Netherrealm, and Outworld (e.g., the roads, statues, and Shao Kahn’s castle). The notable major set pieces in the 2021 film included the Shirai Ryu village, the MMA center (especially during Cole and Scorpion’s fight with Sub-Zero), Sonya’s home, and Raiden’s Temple. The first Pit stage from the games served as a place for Jax and Reiko to fight, but the spiked bottom was not used for a stage fatality. Outworld was the least developed area of the 2021 film; it was a vast wasteland with some statues, walkways that led to ethereal voices of the speakers, and a small open section that served as Shang Tsung’s throne. Some well-developed costumes or CGI characters from the 2021 film included Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Kano (who lacked the bionic eye but wore clothes like the Mortal Kombat: Special Forces version), Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Goro. Reiko’s (somewhat) eye markings and hammer, Mileena’s sais and facial features, and Nitara’s wings vaguely distinguished them. However, Shang Tsung never wore armor in any of his video game iterations. The costumes in the 1995 film conveyed the characters (including the three palette-swapped ninjas at that time of the franchise’s history) closer to the games. Kitana’s costumes may have been the most changed, but they conveyed her princess status more than a ninja-style leotard, headband, and face mask would have. Also, Kitana’s movie appearance was modeled for the later games (e.g., Mortal Kombat 4/Gold). While the 2021 film had the special effects, the 1995 film featured set pieces and costumes that conveyed the mood and atmosphere reminiscent of the video games.
Very well said.
You are either trolling us or probably haven't watched both movies till to the end, the only thing that the 2021 version could be better at is some CGI effects which is to be expected considering the age gap between the two movies but in everything else, MK95 is clearly superior: Story, Characters, locations, practical effects, dialogue, choreography, music. etc you name it, they even managed to create a real-life looking Goro compare that to the fake-looking CGI Goro in MK 2021, the new version even had to steal the nostalgic main theme soundtrack from the 95 which is a clear sign how much better the old version was.
The problem I had is that they did the typical Game-movie trend of creating new characters and put then in the center. We saw this with Resident Evil. Now we see it with Cole and his obserd relation to Scorpion. It makes me feel that we were cheated from having scorpion fully in the movie.
scorpion was still in the netherrealm.

That’s it they win no more questions
Mk95 movie has a better story than mk21.
Let's put it this way - The 95 MK version walked so the 2021 MK version could run.
I can get behind that
FINAL VERDICT:
After watching both films, the 1995 film was the better one due to more developed characters, settings, costumes, fights, quotability, entertainment value, and usage of or integration into the franchise’s history. Although flawed, the 2021 film left desire for the introduction of more video game characters and stories to be translated into future films. Kitana and Johnny Cage should be featured in the next film because Mileena was introduced (rather than the sister from who she was partially cloned), and Johnny had competed in the first tournament. Quan Chi’s involvement with resurrecting characters like Hanzo and Bi-Han makes him a highly possible candidate for the next film. If Shao Kahn is featured, he must be menacing like the versions from the video games and in Mortal Kombat Conquest rather than a giddy or delusional father’s boy like in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. More areas of the realms, such as Shao Kahn’s castle, could occur as well. The 1995 film may have been more faithful to the games, but the 2021 film showed more promise for the film franchise than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
2021 version is better in my opinion.
@@edgar22452Here's an interesting fact; The 2021 _Mortal Kombat_ has blood and gory fatalities, which is what the 1995 _Mortal Kombat_ lacks.
Diagree with you about 2021 leaving a desire for ANYTHING moving forward. It sucked that bad in regards to everything you named better in 1995 MK which is sad. I also think 2021 was basically Annihilation in 2021, that bad. Annihilation wasn't that far off from being great & I even have a fix that makes Annihilation undoubtedly better than 2021 in 6 ways
Making MK Annihilation Better Than 2021 in 6 Simple Steps (all of this I think would need an extra 15-20 mins screentime max & a few more actor, assuming they were available & a bigger budget, but my main thing is releasing this in 1998 instead of 97 is the key to making it so much better)
I think Annihilation suffers mostly from the lack of screentime & lacking a few more Kharacter & martial arts actors as well, & mostly a real plotline with Kuai Liang searching for his brother & ending up having to fight both Noob Saibot & Sektor. They way they used these Kharacters, along with Ermac & Baraka were misued imo.
1) Adding Kung Lao to the story. If they were gonna kill off Johnny Cage so soon in the movie they should have had Paolo Montalbán as Kung Lao, even if to get killed off at the end to send Liu Kang into his "animality" vs Shao Kahn, would have been better. This way, we could have possibly gotten Kung Lao vs Baraka & Ermac after saving Liu Kang after being jumped by the 2 & already being tired from fighting Smoke.
2) A Few More Martial Arts actors
Adding Kung Lao means you're gonna need more actors, & with him I have a few more martial artists I would have added. JJ Perry played 3 Kharacters in Annihilation: Scorion, Noob Saibot AND Cyrax. Talk about balling on a budget lol. If they had a bigger budget & waited till 98, I would have tried to get a cast like this: (side note Chris Cassamasa was a great Scorpion but for some reason didn't make it back into Annihilation but came back the year afterwards in Conquest. I personally would have loved Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion in a 1998 Annihilation)
Added:
Paolo Montalbán as Kung Lao
Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion
Ho Sung Pak as Sektor
Donnie Yen as Smoke
Michael Jai White as Ermac
Wesley Snipes as Baraka
This way, I we could have had Robin Shou vs Donnie Yen (rematch, where Robin Shou wins this time), Robin Shou vs Wesley Snipes & MJW, Robin Shou & Paolo Montalbán vs Wesley Snipes & MJW, & others that I would have with a better story but that comes in my 3rd way after this full Annihilation Kast with additons I made:
Robin Shou as Liu Kang
Talisa Soto as Kitana
James Remar as Rayden
Sandra Hess as Sonya Blade
Lynn “Red” Williams as Jax
Paolo Montalbán as Kung Lao
Keith Cooke as Sub Zero
Brian Thompson as Shao Kahn
Reiner Schöne as Shinnok
Musetta Vander as Sindel
Irina Pantaeva as Jade
Litefoot as Nightwolf
Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion
Ho Sung Pak as Sektor
Donnie Yen as Smoke
J. J. Perry as Cyrax / Noob Saibot
Michael Jai White as Ermac
Wesley Snipes as Baraka
Tyrone Wiggins as Rain
Deron McBee as Motaro
Marjean Holden as Sheeva
Dana Hee as Mileena
Chris Conrad as Johnny Cage
3) I would have made the Cyber Lin Kuei a much bigger plotline, Sektor in particular, & taking up most of that 15-20 extra mins I was talking about would be dedicated to this. He could have been played by Ho Sung Pak, a good actor & martial artist & could have been a bigger Shao Kahn general instead of a throw away villain I think that was thrown into a pit during Baraka vs Liu Kang.
4) This is where I would swap Ermac with Sektor in this point of the movie, so Ermac can assist Baraka in beating Liu Kang after he starts to get the upper hand, when Kung Lao shows up for the 1st time to help Liu Kang where Kung Lao solos them both for the most part by being fresh before they both end up killing them or whatever.
5) I would make Sheeva vs Sonya at the end instead of throwing her away. This gives room for Kung Lao to face Rain at the end while Liu Kang takes on both Sektor & Noob Saibot. This would be Robin Shou vs Ho Sung Pak (aka the original Liu Kang) & JJ Perry, both great martial artists. Then after Kung Lao beats Rain, he goes to face Shao Kahn early & ends up killed.
6) At the ending fight scene, I would have both Sub Zero & Scorpion come to assist Earthrealm warriors, with Sub Zero & Scorpion being shown to have formed an off screen truce & alliance. They can be shown to have another decent 1-2 min fight during the extra 15-20 mins where thr winner is left unclear but it looks like one has the upper hand & is about to deliver a finishing blow. This This way they save Liu Kang who can move on to face Shao Kahn & we get Sub Zero vs Sektor (Keith Cooke vs Ho Sung Pak) & Scorpion vs Noob Saibot (Chris Cassamasa vs JJ Perry) in the final battle as well.
I think that would make Annihilation infinitely better than 2021, especially if you leave everything else the same. Annihilation was cheesy for it's time & the fight scenes weren't great but the martial arts &, stuntwork within them is better than 2021 for sure.
I don't think comparing 2021 to Annihilation at all is a good look for it. 2021 is basically a 2021 version of Annihilation if we're just being real, & if 1995 had the Annihilation Sonya & I think she would have had a better fight scene with Trevor Goddard as Kano. She's way better than Jessica McNamee as Sonya, who was terrible as Sonya aside from her looks. Everything else about her portrayal sucked, especially her fights & someone like Katheryn Winnick or Amy Johnston should have been Sonya.

1995 had goosebump moments for me .... Johnny Cage intro where he's filming a movie scene was great. The way Reptile fights Liu Kang to that electro music and enters as if he's a secret character that's just been unlocked with the announcer saying REPTILE. Shang Tsung was epic, the actor played the character well. Raiden played by Christopher Lambert was epic. So was Kano, Subzero + Scorpion. The 2001 version was very good as well, it was the most accurate to the game I would say. Kung Lao's teleporting intro / fatality and hat throws were sick. Kabal was super accurate. Kano was very funny. Sub Zero and his mannerisms were terrifying, he played a really good bad guy. Scorpion was amazing and the acting at the beginning I thought I was watching a proper Samurai film.
