@@anonymousinc6330 he was going 130 on the wall of a 60mph track, the tires weren't damaged, didn't hook the fender into the wheel or the wall. Those cars aren't good for all season and that one is ready for more. 40 little bumps but the frame is probably fine.

@@tangentfox4677 it doesn't ruin the car. It ruins part of the cheap fiberglass shell that they buy in bulk, though. Literally the cheapest, most easily replaced part of the car, that gets replaced every race anyway because there's always gonna be car to car contact during a race that breaks the shell. That's why they're so cheap and mass produced.
Edit: looking at the car's POV cam, it appears they might also have to change a tie rod end. Again, they would do this between races anyway.

@@nicolep7241 He basically just said fuck it and drove the car into the wall, hit the highest gear he had, and let the car drive itself around the track. Because Martinsville is such a short, paper clip shaped track, drivers usually have to go very slow around the turns, and because of that, Chastain’s car was just that much faster riding the wall, and he was able to go around five of them. It badly damaged the car, so it’s something that would only be attempted in this specific last lap scenario, and luckily for him it paid off.

I disagree. The 3:00 one (once you know where to spot him) lets you clearly see his speed relative to everyone else, and visually track all 5 cars he passes.

Carl Edwards tried it too about 10 years back, but at a Speedway (Kansas or Fontana, somewhere like that) and the speed loss hitting the wall didn't work there. Edwards said it worked in games, but not real life, looks like he should have tried it at a short-track!
@@OsellaSquadraCorse That is the deal with short tracks, the corner speed is slow enough normally that the car is powerful enough to overcome the friction forces of the wall slowing it down.

What's crazy about this is that wall riding is not a new idea, people have tried and failed to make it work so it was dismissed, but somehow Chastain pulled off "video game physics" in real life. Incredible.

Absolutely - that guy races hard and never quits. He may rub people the wrong way with his driving, but now his season is down to one race. The field better be ready! I loathe Chevrolets but Ross is one of the best drivers in the series - Hamlin is one of the punks and the dumbest one out there.

For everybody out there who don't understand what happened (I had to check the news to understand), Ross Chastain pinned his car to the wall and was driving 70mph faster than everybody else in the last curve. He was 10th place before the curve and ended up 5th place crossing the line.

This is what being +70 MPH faster than everyone else looks like. Absolute insanity the car neither flipped nor quit on him.
What's so amazing is that we're decades into the sport where people have been trying everything to get any advantage, but nobody has ever seen anything remotely like that move. It's amazingly novel and unique but at the same time beautifully simple, the engine had more to give than the wall could take.
I've seen a few others say in the comments that several other drivers have tried this move in the past, but they either slowed down in turn or just didn't get much speed from doing so. This man's execution was flawless!
I think it has something to do with the concepts of crashing and going faster that just dony seem to add up very well

I'm sure that NASCAR is already writing a new rule against such a move. I'm sure glad that Martinsville speedway had all these sections of their wall secured well. Did you see all the spectators just standing along the wall? That would have been exciting as hell.
I don't honestly think they will... until or unless someone else tries to do it, and fails. The amount of balls it takes to do that is insane, and it also could never work besides on the last lap, because you just will absolutely destroy your car. I don't see this becoming a thing really.
@@brandoncooke6564 the worry isn’t that this will be how everyone takes every turn. It’s that since anyone can do it, you’re risking a lot by not doing it on the last lap. If everyone does it, then the last lap will just be a single file line to the finish

for me, what I took away the most from this transcending moment, not only watching something done within the rules of the racecar world, or sporting domain - it is a very inspirational to see someone risk making decisions vs. not trying at all. If Ross performed this move and failed, and lost to the 11 car by a nose - I would still be blown away by the move and tipping my hat for the attempt, the fact he pulled it off is absolutely amazing. It is something that resonates for everyone - in our daily lives, jobs,family, and whatever - we all should be inspired by this.
What made this move even more epic was the fact Ross and denny were racing each other (pretty much) to advance and were side by side at the finish. Craziest finish I've ever seen in nascar.
That made this move all the better!

@@itzanopinion much respect for Ross, but at the same time, plenty of respect for Chase (guessing it was him since it would be pretty crass for anyone on his team to say it before him) as well for being able to acknowledge it without being salty about losing positions to it. I'm no fan of NASCAR, but I'm pretty sure his move had a hefty price tag for everyone behind him, so it shows some real sportsmanship and love of the game to react that way.
That is possibly one of the most insane moves anyone has ever tried and succeeded in pulling off in all of motorsport.

As a WRC fan and one who has never been amused by NASCAR, why is everyone so proud of this? I get that it secured his chance at a championship or whatever but this is borderline cheating and nothing to be proud of. Yeah it was jaw dropping and amusing but at the end of the day, dude couldn’t win the race playing by the rules. Same with floppers in soccer and basketball players drawing fouls. Just play the 🤬 game like a man with no sucker punches or cheap shots.

100% the most "ain't my car" move I've ever seen. Makes that scene that Belushi pulled in K9 (where he rented the car just to ram it into the house across the street) look like a distant memory. Also defends every video gamer who said "but it COULD happen..."

I've tried watching NASCAR multiple times but it's never hooked me in.
This is one of the few moments in the sport that would make anyone perk up.

This is an amazing example of how far the Nascar safety barriers and car development has come. That was an amazing drive!
I doubt this could have been done in a Gen 6 car. The composite body really worked here.
The Indycar designed safety barriers are a genius design in how simple they are.......I believe nearly any cup car in the last 35 it's could've done the same
Naw the steel body wouldn't of worked. The solid structure of the next gen and the skinny sidewalls on the 18" tires allowed the car to skid along the wall. The fatter 15" tire wouldn't of let the car wall ride.

Basically Denny Hamlin described the Ross Chastain move as 100% within the rules, just perfectly timed and perfectly executed. Hope he does not back off in the days to come of that analysis. Guess what, it was so exciting, and will be replayed so many times, it will draw new fans in droves, because that was exciting. He was literally 50 miles an hour faster than every car through turns 3 and 4.

I would have loved to witness that in person. The video of the middle of 3 and 4 corners, you almost couldn't keep up with how fast he was going.

As a Denny Hamlin fan, I'm sad that he is going to miss out again on a potential championship. Dude seems to be this generation's Mark Martin when it comes to "always a bridesmaid, never a bride" as the saying goes. That said, I can't even be mad at Chastain. That was a gutsy move and he totally went for it. Respect.
