Hans: Do you in your terms feel aggression towards the audience
Roger: No
Oh how that would change....
WHO WAS TOLD NOT TO SPIT ON THE FAN?
Who would think that he was going to be booed in countries like Brasil because of anti-fascist messages on his stage...
@@erichschreiber2773 they did that? what a bunch of assholes?
@@thevoid99 Yes, in São Paulo, he even reported on brazilian tv, sayng that this is is not the first time it happens on his show but people should know what The Wall is about and what are his convictions when they go into his show. It was awful, i felt really embarrassed. This is not how brazilian fans are, but... His political opinions are always polemic and we are going through really hard times with presidential elections. He said "people should be angry with the powerful and corrupted politicians, not with one another"
@@thevoid99 half of the crowd was literally booing and the other was cheering
I just can't get over Syd's talking voice. There's just something about it that draws you in.
It's so soft and beautiful. So much ASMR. [swoons]

@@thinginground5179 Yup!
And his smile!
@@coldcreamnroses1038 Oh, yes! So much sweetness in a smile! Sweet, sweet Syddums was an angel-baby!
So nice to see some footage of this era not lip synced
Not much live footage of the Floyd at this time, so it is good to see this
Really goes to show how even by 1967 much of the high music critics and folks at the BBC still didn't have the faintest idea what the hell space or acid or experimental rock really was, just goes to show how alien and new all that stuff was.
Muchas gracias :) :)
This is how I prefer to remember Syd. He was so charming, whimsical, and charismatic.
how else would you remember him?
@@mynameismark25 Empty eyes, paranoid, unintelligible, erratic, an acid casualty. Essentially after summer 1967 he was like a changed person, and not for the better.
Yes, he looks beautiful and healthy, he's so articulate about his music
@@danielstoddart False narrative gonna false narrative
@@dn4339 I'm gonna find his Esquire somewhere in England
This footage is a masterpiece. To see it in it's full HD glory is amazing, especially when Syd is still...okay
Your profile xD "AAAAAHHH"
They really should've tried to colorize it.
zen babaloo That's nearly impossible considering the light effects in the beginning, and during Astronomy Domine. Maybe it could be colourized during the interview
especially when he looks that good
Cigar some did a fan music video of Pow R Toc H using color footage. ua-cam.com/video/JxbQ0q7v_NY/v-deo.html
In the song "Summer 68" Wright sings "The music was too loud"
I wonder if they got inspiration from this interview
A pure acid trip for sure. Glad i never went down that road...
Brian J. Carnevale j how is that comment relevant
Hans Keller's face is an acid trip
From that I gained a day and I lost a bloody year
Striking to see Syd before his bad times hit. So eloquent, so coherent, so pleasant. A diamond geezer.
i disagree that there was ever any 'bad times'. Syd lived a normal and 'sane' life after he left the band.
@@mynameismark25
he spent 10 years bumming around london till his royalties ran out whilst writing sad lyrics and steadily gaining 150 pounds in weight , but yes you’re somewhat right
@@mynameismark25 that’s the romantic way, unfortunately that is not the case
Roger and Syd’s analysis of why they should play concerts and the fact that they were “pop at the moment” is genius
1:34 I can read on his face "Please, get me out of this place, it's gonna be *TOO LOUD* "
I think he was just playing a character, You know? Making the situation a show... Or he was a dickhead.
@@baitman2368 definitely a dickhead
People complain about Hans Keller, but he actually makes this interview much more interesting by being the antagonist. Even though I disagree with him, he's classically trained and has a much better understanding of music than your typical pretentious music snob or critic.
Some people cannot keep their opinions for themselves
In fairness, he was trying to have a civilized conversation about the music. He said his piece and let the band have their say. He shouldn't pretend he likes the music if he doesn't.
And after all, he did put them on his show.
"The Pink Floyd"
@@stephenhumphrey4492 that's what they went by in those days - after 'the pink floyd sound'
Yes but had to end the piece by calling it a childish regression - as snobbish and condescending as one could possibly be. He comes across as rather bigoted and old-fashioned in my judgement, a product of his time, but so charmingly so - so it's quaint and endearing, at least from a nostalgic perspective. A manifestation of generational clash for sure.
so amazing to see syd lucid and smiling and still having that spark in his eyes
Not like black holes in the sky
As opposed to seeing him without a spark in his eyes?
Proto-beatboxing
Beatboxing was formally created by Roger in "Several Spicies...".
+Hot Shot Raw Sauce Nah, Syd beats Waters to the punch on "Pow R Toc H" on the first album, which is the song they were performing in the beginning.
Syd: "Tch tch!"
Waters: [Screaming]
Rick: "Toi toi!"
@@murpi338 this made me laugh so much idk why
Syd is so beautiful.
Yes I agree. Forgot how dreamy his eyes were back then too ❤
I love that Hans Keller states he does not want to prejudice the audience with his opinion before they hear the band, and then goes on to do just that. But as someone else pointed out, it makes a nice change from the fawning of modern interviewers.
Outside of the weird interviewer, this is a valuable 'time-capsule' of the early beginnings of the Floyd, especially since Syd appears still well!
EXTREMELY Valuable, yes. Just wow!
Exactly. Just to see footage of Syd in this state and answering questions is a rare gem.
Every time I see that announcer clip and his passive aggressive put-downs I have a good chuckle. History got the last laugh on him.
I know, right!
Phil McCrevice dude what the fuck

Hans Keller:
"Let me first turn to Roger. I want to ask one fundamental question, of which I'll tell you viewers may not be quite aware of the significance of it because they didn't hear all of it. Why does it all got to be so terribly loud? For me, frankly, its too loud. I just can't bare it. I happened to have grown up with the string quartet which is a bit softer. So, uh, why does it got to be so loud?"
Roger:
"Well, I don't think that it HAS to be. But I mean, that's the way we like it. And uh, we didn't grow up in the string quartet so I guess that could be one of the reasons why its loud. I mean, it doesn't sound terribly loud to us."
Real-Time Car Travel I like loud, really loud!! :)
Hahaha! I was laughing throughout the interview because it looked like the interviewer disliked it while Syd and Roger were talking about how great it sounds to them.
I've heard that clip of that stuck-up ponce for years now. What a tool !!
I think Roger Waters was born a curmudgeon.
@@stephenhumphrey4492 Yeah. It's quite possible.
4:52 He looks so happy. He is enjoying the music with his entire body, and I love it so bad.
Sure is nice seeing Syd being completely lucid and sober. Makes his eventual fate even sadder. Also, not having grown up watching that particular TV show I wonder if the Floyd knew they were going to have a rough time with the opinionated host.
Probably knew :) But as someone said on an upload of this ages ago, it was different times; now you have interviewers kissing peoples asses and gladhanding them :(
See, Syd Barrett invented the Human Beat Box.
Love Syd’s smile when the interviewer mentions the string quartet! Syd & Rog seem like they’re able to silently communicate too!
Pretty easy to grasp how much this WAS definitely Syd's show...Rick's excellent and, under acknowledged harmonies and nuanced sound contributions were vital, but this is a real document of how much of the sound relies on Syd
"I don't want to prejudice you, but ... these guys suck."
At last, to see this this interview in clear definition. Thank you. I was a child in the 60s but remember only too well what an overpowering social and cultural revolution it was. There's nothing wrong with Hans Keller questioning these upstarts. Had they had longer they could've discussed how they "painted" with abstract sound etc. Syd was primarily a visual artist and quite capable of discussing culture with Keller had he wished. 99% of the country was shocked by the aural onslaught of distortion and overpowering rhythm of rock music. Keller, used to harmonic order rather than splintering chaos, articulated the opinion of the majority. And in some respects it was "infantile" - but that's useful if informed by intelligence and authentic creative brilliance like Syd's. God, that man was beautiful!!
Too loud.....yeah that's the way we like it.
Syd looks like George Harrison at the beginning. He and Roger were so well-spoken.
wow, can't unsee it now.
The way that Syd 'dances' with his arms freaks me out, like he really felt the "Wooooooo" sooo cool
The black and white makes the shadow look creepy
0:18 roger's duck mating call
That scream Roger can do is pure talent...golden
Pterodactyl speech ))
is it part of some song they made? it sounds pretty interesting, i might give it a try if it does exist :D
I love Syd, that's my fucking dude right there. Shine on brother, hope you're happy & safe wherever you are in the universe.
Everyone: rocking out
Roger: screaming in pain
Intelligent, articulate and utterly charming. RIP SYD BARRETT.
And little did he know, Hans Keller would talk to (and complain to) one of the greatest, influential, important rock bands in history. Is that loud enough for you Keller?
in all honesty he probably would've liked the post-Barrett Pink Floyd far more. It took me a while to appreciate the early Pink Floyd *cough* LSD *cough*
Unnamed Shadow I really love the early Pink Floyd in fact they hold a special place for me because of their quirkinesses. You really got to see Syd’s artistry and of course, the psychedelic beauty. Very unique for sure. :)
What is Syd wearing in this? I know it’s a paisley shirt but I love the way the arms are flared and I’d love to find one
Hans Keller would have a heart attack listening to rap.
Priceless footage of one of the most important and original
British bands in music history. And yes, Syd was brilliant.
I fucking LOL'ed at Rogers eye movement at 6:34 "Are you fucking kidding me?!" LOOOL
and him looking at Syd at 6:01 after the string quartet comment. Roger can never hide his feelings.
HAHAHAJAH
Syd beautiful face in HD? grateful
Fantastic!!!! Syd still had the "Light Brilliant in his Eyes" on this occasion.
Rare Video, almost surreal images, creative and "Futurist" interview.
Thanks Syd ❤️🙏💔.

This really feels like the beginning of Pink Floyd. You got the psychedelic background with the radio transmissions coming in. Cut to Syd who has his arms out and shadows dancing behind him. Classic.
Roger whinnying like a horse at Pow R's intro should be a meme
Two minutes into Astronomy Domine and chill then he gives you this look. 1:35
At the beginning its toc h pow r
7:57 "Yes, I think so. But the- us- oh, I mean- uh- When we play, I think... we- uh- uhhh-" oof, poor Syd D:
Edit: Aside from that, he's very well spoken!
Syd Barrett, what unique person
Hans Keller. Ha ha, charade you are!
4:01 the legendary zippo lighter.
Syd is so cute I can hardly BARRETT. :D
AHAHAHAHA
0:19 and that's how Roger Waters was born
Within a month or two of this the breakdown had begun. A shame.
Girls must have gone limp around him at this point. He was VERY
good looking. Kind of ridiculously so.
This is such a strong live performance. I challenge any band to duplicate it.
Easily their best era.
I love this rare footage...you can tell that Syd is is a master at sudden changes in tone and the effect of the shadow as he waves his arms is visually stunning. I can't believe the interviewer chose to focus mainly on the volume instead of the whole effect...
Up there with the most amazing and recognizable drum intros ever. The song, the band just genius. Imagine the look on peoples faces seeing it in 67
I remember Pete Townshend saying that when Pink Floyd came around, the bands started getting "scary". You can kind of see that here, as their music even at this early point is dark, foreboding, electronic, meant for flickering shadows and the cold icy blackness of space. Indeed, the Syd era might actually be some of their darkest music.
Oh God, I love the way they both speak.
It’s crazy how Roger looks so much better older than he does younger
Facts. He looks handsome know. Life is crazy right
He's always looked cool to me lol
Thank you, Syd, Rick 😢 , thank you Roger, Nick, David
That’s long been our only video footage of Syd talking, but how sweet it is to see it in HD. Piper is at least the 3rd best PF record and considering how young Syd he was he would have only gotten better. It’s such a tragedy what happened to him.
In many ways I think it’s their best record.

*hot British guys from the 1960s*
0:19 good grief ! Waters is a scary looking bugger.
Lmao
This and an early interview of David Bowie, both of the interviewers are curious of hostility towards the band(s) when their intended audience worship the ground they walk on and couldn't care less but to dance. I guess it's to cater to the step-ford wivey, Margaret Thatcher, Mary Whitehouse type people. "
Oh my God, they're dropping acid, adorned with beads and sporting a short miniskirt." "Where has a decent society gone?"
Fave interview of all time. Love Barrett's reply. They were so ahead and above there in space. I love when people are misunderstood. It means they're so unique and ahead of everything else
0:01 is this officially the first ever beatboxing?
It's all too terribly loud. I can't Barrett.
Words can't express how much I love and appreciate these videos. These rare glimpses are such a sublime treat.
more syd please
I love this I wish youtube was a thing back then to see some of the hilarious conversations they'd have had in the 50s with all there social standards etc
Syd Barrett would have been way more famous, and probably continued a longer music career if the Internet was around back then. At the same time, I largely prefer the analogue sound quality of the music back then over the digital equipment now.
As if the straight life never drove anyone insane or self destructed. Believe it or not psychiatrists existed and were needed before the hippie movement. The mental healthcare system sucked back then and sucks now. At least Syd left his mark, unlike good old Phil McCrevice
Pow R Toc H:
Syd: Beatboxing
Astronomy Domain: Howling, Caveman language
I love my baby love Roger Waters makes those sounds
Hans Keller: I don't want to prejudice you...
Also Hans Keller: ...bUT
guy: "so roger, what sounds will you be making?"
Roger: "yes"
Roger Waters didn't grow up with a string quartet. But he did use a Viennese quartet in Amused to Death
SYD 💜
Wow, Syd was so cool..
Somethin about seeing roger do the screech is compelling as hell
Regression to my childhood is my goal, the closest I've ever come to utopia, due in a very large part to having music like this in my ears and mind throughout. I'm grateful to Floyd for all they've given me and keep giving me.
"...I don't want to prejudice you..." -- then goes on to prejudice
Lo que se dice una critica constructiva del Sr Hans Keller jajajajjaj 🤣
Thank you to those behind this channel. There are some priceless videos you've been uploading. Thank you so much to all involved
Most obnoxious interviewer aside: Syd had these big, innocent eyes and seems open, vulnerable and almost childlike. The interviewer seems to be drawn in by that and his obstinate attitude changes. Syd really was one of the Fae, he was magical.
Had this interviewer never heard Stravinsky? Or 'loud' and discordant music by other classical composers? Either he is being disingenuous or he is astonishingly ignorant.
Looooovveeeee you Syd !!!🔥♥️
I can’t blame Hans Keller in this clip. And I love Floyd and especially the Barrett era with all my heart. You just have to know Keller’s musical background to understand his viewpoint.
So you are asking us to be on a point of empathy to understand someone different, thats what Keller should do specially if you are as he was in that moment in a position of "power"

Cool video. Piper is my 2nd favourite Pink Floyd album. Barrett is right, it's easy to like loud, angry music and soft, beautiful music too. I love Led Zeppelin AND Beethoven's chamber music. Why not? Jawohl.
Would have loved to see Syd Barret in person back in the day! What a lifetime experience!
The only bad thing about this video is cuz are in black & white.. and the psychedelic questions of that terribly loud interviewer
I didn,t know they didn,t come from a string quartet. lol
I can't save it enough..It should be shared all over the internet. Phenomenal footage and music. The music by itself is phenomenal.
