I posted this a little while back but there were some things i messed up on the video edit. So i fixed a few things about it and wanted to repost it. Hands down my favorite video to ever make!
One of my strongest memories I have with my dad, is hanging out a Pro Drum Shop in LA. He would go down to the Musician's Union, do what he had to do, and then head to Pro Drum Shop. We would spend Hours in there, hanging out, BSing with the other drummers, and looking around. This was in the 70s (I was 8-10 years old), before drum sticks were really paired up and sold that way...so he would grab a hand full of sticks and stand at the counter and roll them across, looking for the straightest sticks he could find (a curved stick would wobble when rolled across a solid surface). He would spend hours, looking for cymbals, playing each one individually, listening for their special sound ( he told me that if we ever had a house fire, he was grabbing his cymbal bag, his drums could be replaced, but his cymbals were one of a kind). He was mechanically inclined, so he was always looking for orphan drums and hardware, to tinker around with and see what he could do. He didn't "hang out" in bars (he played in bars occasionally), he hung out in the Drum Shops.
I take lessons at Badges. Only been playing a year tomorrow March 6th, but I still haven't seen all their stuff, and only began to notice how truly unique it is.
That was so incredible to watch. The small mom and pop drum shops are so incredible but so hard to come by in eastern Canada. They have been pushed out by the bigger box stores. Seeing this video really makes me want to go to the states and check these places out. Thanks for posting this.

Nice to see you stop at Badge's!! I've known Charlie since 2015 when he was in our jazz department in music school. Absolutely nice dude, and his shop is amazing!! Also glad to see you ran into Ethan there too, he's another killer drummer in the area!!
1. I am definitely picking up the shirt. 2. I WAS SO STRESSED i cant imagine that time crunch. And 3 i wish I could afford to come down and actually join your shop in person. Im in canada, so it's an expensive treck, unfortunately. That plus work doesn't give a lot of time off. But either way. I absolutely loved this video!!!!!
We had a drum store here in NJ, huge. 4 floors and 6 large display windows on each floor. Each one with a different drumset configuration. You could see them all from the highway as you drove by. Had me mesmerized from the time I was a kid. Not sure if it's still in business. But there are still some drumsets in a few of the windows. Maybe I'll break in one day and see what I can get.😅
I enjoyed this... the final purchase was a perfect choice. Sounded amazing. Coming from smaller towns, it never even occurred to me that there were shops that only carried drums... I thought it was just "music stores" everywhere... doh! I just moved to W Central TN, so a trip to a few of those may be in my future! Cheers!
Oh, we have several in TN! Forks drum closet and Nelson's in Nashville. Memphis Drum Shop in Memphis is crazy good as well. All 3 are worth a day trip imho. You're also not too far from Badges in OH

I love the Champagne sparkle myself...don't know why, I just do! Now I'm gonna have to search for an MIJ kit. The wife thanks you ahead of time! God bless Steven!
Haha! MIJ kits are typically pretty cheap and of a cheaper construction. However, a lot of them sound great and you get a lot of bang for the buck. This kit was an off brand manufacturer in Japan that was making pro level kits modeled after Ludwig for pro players in Japan. So def not a typical MIJ build. There's a great FB page for MIJ drums if you're interested
That's referring to the amount of stress this trip caused lol. The last couple of hours were ridiculously stressful. I didn't think it was gonna be that bad
I have so many questions…. I stumbled across this video so I’m not a regular viewer. 1) what was the criteria for the drum gear purchased? 2) why couldn’t you buy all this stuff from one well stocked drum shop? 3) how was the arbitrary time limit selected? 4) why would you lose all the drum gear if you ran out of time? None of this makes any sense!
@@StephenTaylorDrumsLose the drum gear to what/whom? I smell something fishy here... No way you could have auditioned all those snares in the last shop in just 10 minutes... You're not getting away with this so easily, Stephen Taylor!! 😜
I have a great challenge idea. I'm just a beginner. Next winter you have 2 weeks to make me a very well rounded drummer. If you succeed the community will buy you a trophy. If not, we'll keep trying haha.
So cool. I am in the process of building my first drumkit and I kind of get the same excitement watching the video as I do shopping for all the components. New basses and amps are fun but with all the different parts the drum kit is so much more complex. I started with snare, bass drum pedal and practice pad, and a used set of new beats. that's enough to work on some stuff until it's complete. I will keep an eye out for a used crash and ride over the next couple months and when I am finished building bedrooms I can kick the wife and kids out of my studio, get the shell pack and set up the whole kit.
No doubt, I live in north east Thailand out in the boonies. It's a 10 hour drive to Bangkok for any decent shop and even then they keep very little stock, most stuff is kept in the suppliers warehouse.

Hi Stephen, As a Zildjian endorser are you obligated to perform using only Zildjians? I once spoke with John Dechristopher at a Steve Gadd clinic who told me that artists have to sign a contract saying they will only use Zildjians. I remember thinking that Neil Peart used a Wuhan China and even made it a point to say so in his instructional video.
On my lessons, on recordings, live...you will see me use nothing but Zildjian. They are also all over this channel and my website and socials. But I have told all of my endorsers, I have a strange niche. So when it comes to a video like this that is healthy for the drumming community, I engage with a lot of brands like you would as if you are just a drummer with no endorsement. There's just no way I can walk into a drum shop and be an honest player and not test out the other gear. That's part of why I believe people trust a player...honesty. every company I've spoken with understands that. I sold the non Zildjian gear after this video as I obviously wouldn't be able to play it anywhere publicly (and be honest). So on giveaway vids, challenge vids like this one, etc. I will interact with other gear so I can educate people. We've talked about that and they would expect nothing less from a teacher. I 100% believe Zildjian is the best brand out there though sound wise.
I mean I have multiple kits for different types of musics and rooms but the idea that someone is saying any drum set is one dimensional is a little ridiculous especially something is high level as WFL
Not a drum thing, but... I learned after leaving a card to hold my wallet in my hand until I get my card back. (Now you can put it on your watch or phone....)

This is a ridiculous comment. I've made a living playing music since my teens. Music does pay. This was for fun and to support local drum shops. Community. You not being able to make money playing music is another topic altogether. Judging from this comment though, I'd say it has a lot more to do with your attitude and outlook than your playing ability. Zappas bass player is a bouncer now, singer for ratt sells t shirts for cash only after the gig, pretty boy floyd starts go fund me to pay bills. Bass player for mahavishnu becomes photographer. Streams pay 2 cents. You are a video editor. Shall I go on?
Check out Tory Slusher, the best guitarist in the world with 12,900 subscribers. Music does not pay. Lead singer of ratt, selking t shirts after the gig.
Jimi Hendrix, ratt, bullet boys, pretty boy floyd. All broke. Ginger Baker, broke. Five finger death punch pays to play to backing tracks, and decibel meters....streams pay 2 cents.
Dude, I have 7 million dollars invested. I am fine, but 75 bucks a gig will not cut it. Smashing pumpkins compensation is a bag of weed, and a hotel room.
I can give you 500 examples how music doesn't pay. Here is one more. David bowie pays his guitarists 150 bucks a gig......shall I go on?
Sure, go on if you like. I can give you numbers of more people than you can call making a living playing music. They're friends of mine. There are two sides to every coin.

You better hurry...good rhing editing exists, so you can totally lie about everything....
You haven't watched my channel very long if you feel I would lie in a video like this. Ive made it a point for 15 years to tell teuth as i know it on this channel. Would be dumb to start lying now. I'm OK with you thinking whatever, but that's the reason I continually showed the times on my phone. This is the sequence as it happened. Believe what you would like though, makes no difference to me my friend 😄👊🏻🥁
You knew someone was gonna say that nonsense young man
WHY NOT THE DRUM CENTER IN WESTLAKE CALIFORNIA!!!!!
Lol, no way I could have made that trip from Nashville in 24 hours...maybe in the future though
