Hey Matt, where can I find that extra large drum kit dust cover you’re using? I’ve been having a hard time finding a dust cover that size for my kit. Dig your videos man. 👍
God your load out made me remember my local crew days back in the mid 80s. We had to long ramp it up into the truck since it was air support roof. No loading dock. Fine for basketball, shitty for rock and roll. An act like Kiss would wear your ass out with a dozen trusses of Par cans. Youngsters won't understand. They were heavy. They used the old Clair Brothers reefer sized speaker cabs. And since you could fly a very limited amount of weight onto the truss structure (taking that mother f#cker down and up is a different story. It took union iron workers three days.. with dumb labor to help move stuff. It was 40 tons itself. Stupid design building. They put a real roof on it a decade later. Long story but insurance paid for it.) You had to stack subs and half the speaker cabs on the ground. But the real point - humping sh1t up into the trucks. Pushing the heavy stuff required a couple of offensive linemen sized guys at the bottom to push it up. Wasn't designed so that you could fork it. Dumb jocks excelled. It was leg day for them. Little stuff I could handle, but generally I broke audio since it was stuff I understood. Loved the job. Paid really good, entertaining work and often got to see a good show. Hip hop was just getting off the ground so those were few but really good. The Barry Manlow sh1t sucked but U2 Josha Tree followed by Unforgettable Fire was killer. The Dead was memorable. Dedicated stoners. Started smoking at 8:30 in the morning and didn't quit till the last truck. Sold a quarter pound of weed that day. Hey it was money 😊. I loved doing the shows but eventually I graduated college. Had to get a real job to pay back the student loans.
I just want to say thank you. I've learned so much from you, from honing my organizational and sorting skills, which reflect one's ability or OCD to have everything in its proper place and fully prepared, to cultivating a disciplined mindset. And of course, those crew jams have been incredible! BEAST! 🔥🔥🔥
Surreal getting to see one of these videos from my show, I was in the crowd with my friends, literally knowing the rhythms in which the line checks work with lol!! Great work, Matt!!
I love seeing Luke being taken care of as much as possible when it comes to heat and pyro now after he got burned up pretty good. It's so nice to see how the crew tries EVERYTHING now to help with AC and like 4 extra fans. Love the videos and the crew so much!
I was a drum/ guitar tech for 30 years, starting in transit vans and the M1 up to stadiums. Loved it all, every minute. God bless catering, never get off the bus.
Until seeing this I knew nothing about your industry/craft. I find it fascinating and have learned a lot about back stage and concert management, just from this one video. An absolute must watch. Thanks.
That smell from the toaster is the oil the factory puts on it to keep it from rusting and you did the right thing by running it hot for like 10 minutes to burn that stuff off.
Finally watching a video from a show I was actually at! Thanks, Matt! I was there to see DGD, but I really enjoyed seeing FIR. Excellent show! Thank you again!
Matt, so kool that you shared this adventure with people that don't tour or have seen behind the scenes. I am a retired touring musician...years ago took our babysitter to see a load-in and sound check. I also gave her an All Access pass for the show so she could move around at FOH. When we were leaving she said "now I know why concerts tickets cost what they cost". If people only knew how much skill, work and time is involved to do a show. Thanks again, be safe, be kind.
I will NEVER get over the one chic in the background of every lunch and dinner catering with the laugh that she has. It just stands out and that's all i ever hear, unless she so happens to not be there! XD
Every day at skl in a free/study period I put on one of your vids! Ur awesome dude! Soon could you post a vid of your gear what you use and even possibly a drum cover of a song of ur choice!! Keep it up mate!
Saw you wearing the drum-cam for the Australia tour with Parkway Drive & the Ghost Inside - hope to see some footage of that - amazing show by the way, you guys put on an epic performance!
Hey Matt this is Sthe Sibiya from South Africa 🇿🇦, I just wanted to give a shout out to you man, I consume a lot of your content, I follow you on almost every social media platform. Thank you so much for always taking footage of what we / myself as a Drummer dream of which is touring the world... and what you are always showing us is the closest to seeing what it's like to tour. Thank you So much Matt🤜🏾🤛🏻
Try leaving the tune bot in the same spot on the head that the microphone will be placed while you are tuning. Game changer for FOH sound. Also since you are tuning top and bottom heads to the same pitch on the floor toms try using a 2ply head on the reso side as well. It might help you achieve the difference you’re searching for from when you tuned the reso higher. The feel on it is pretty great as well.
im so looking forward.. nearly 6 months at parris island boot csmp, i broke it down, meal by meal.. how much did 1 look forward to eating vs eating sand lol ❤ some 560 times 😎
Stumbled upon this channel. Awesome content! Always wanted to be a drum tech and watching the day to day is pretty cool and interesting. Also, I used to watch Luke years ago when he did drum covers on UA-cam!
STF crew checking in! Thanks for another great BTS video, Matt. Super amped for you that you're going to go internationally too! I cannot wait to see those.
STF Crew here! I was at the Jiffy Lube Live ("Bristow" VA) concert. DAMN you guys go through a ton of pyro in the show! 32:06 Yeah, THAT! I was sitting about 30 rows back (just behind the VIP boxes) and I could still feel the heat! It seemed like the only time pyro wasn't running was in between songs. 44:30 Dance Gavin Dance was the first time I've ever experienced a band member whose only job was to belt out lyrics in a monotone growl. They had a lead singer who growled, but he did so while singing different notes. The first guy... one note, one growl, various words. If I could growl through an entire set five days a week without turning my throat into so much raw ground beef, I COULD BE IN A TOURING METAL ROCK BAND! 🤫 One question regarding the A/C units... do they change the snare temperature? Another awesome drum tech video, Matt! Looking forward to what you have for us next!
@@stinghouseproductions8502 LOL It seemed to me that's all he was doing, but I'm sure he's getting paid for more than that. If that was all, you could just put it on playback.
Man always love the videos. Even inspired me to get back into drumming again. Tho due to space had to go electric and unfortunately got some crappy double peddles but I'll upgrade that in a few months
Saw you guys last night in Boston. Took my son to the show. I missed the memo to wear all black so I was sticking out being big old guy with a bright white shirt walking around. lol. You had Luke’s kit sounding amazing. Great sound system overall there. Noticed how during changeover, you just hit minimum drums needed for soundcheck. Props for that. One of other bands drum tech thought he was Bonzo doing solo when he did his bands sound check, kinda a tool thing I thought. Great show overall.
I was in The Woodlands, TX when you guys were there last weekend. Was hoping to see a video from that night hahaha. All jokes aside, keep the videos rolling, your job and experiences are super interesting.
The information covered in the videos is invaluable. I'm a recording artist the drum set up if there is something not right Mr Horn saves the day. love your work!!!
Bass drum sound was amazing. Really upgrade that new drum head. Snare did sound great. Great powerfull attack Toms had a deep consistent sound. Nice you use the Tunebot. Next upgrade will be a freezer with cold drinks and ice for the drummer and a chair with Shiatsu massage for drummer and tech. Nice video. That pyro .....it feels if they really go to the limit; I would feel more comfortable with some extra margins towards the sealing/tent/cotton, aluminium, electric cables, hot lights, etc.
Always cool to see you videos Matt! Curious to see your vids from the EU/UK tour later this year (gonna do shows in London, Paris, Tilburg... from 4k to 20k people).
Our guy, back with the videos! Nice gig you've got carved out there for yourself my man. I'm jealous. I know I'd be good at it - for drums or guitar - but wouldn't know where or how to start. Anyway, stay safe, have fun, keep posting!
Stf crew right here Matt. It was funny, this morning I’m thinking wth where is the o.g drum tech video. I haven’t seen a new one. Then presto new vid, thanks man.
Very interesting to see this side of the job. I'm studying as an event technician but the company I learn in mostly works as a rental for systems and technicians in and around one city. Which is very tame in work speed compared to you guy who accompany a band on tour. Also interesting to see how different but similar things work there in the US compared to Germany. Thanks for showing your persepective here! Nice video ^^

Hi. In high school in the 70’s, I did the light show for a decent cover rock band that played local clubs. All four gear boxes fit in the back of my parent’s wood paneled Country Squire station wagon. There was no catering. I got one free beer and the rest cost me. Sometimes the band would forget to pick me up on the way to the show. It was a hard life back then for the few light show guys. Thank you..
