Thanks for comparing these two cameras. I feel like the 1DX3 got lost in the chaos that was 2020 and people forgot that it's an all-purpose beast. My R5 is a thoroughbred, while my 1DX3 is a workhorse. They complement each other nicely. I only played with a demo C70 for a couple of hours and I didn't think it was weather-sealed, given the fan vents. My assumption must have been incorrect. I hope the 1DX3 gets a FW update next week. It deserves the functionality of the R5 and R6 and it would prevent those bodies from potentially cannibalizing some more profitable 1DX3 sales.

I've been shooting with 1dx2 mainly up until now so I'm excited to utilize the tools and features of Canon's cinema lines moving forward. Your vids have been helpful in the decision making process!
Just to keep things in perspective, you don't necessarily need a long recording time to create good content. I think its worth mentioning that filmmakers have been making great content and feature films with an inherent 20 minute recording limitation for more than 100 years. Codec notwithstanding, we modern content creators and filmmakers tend to forget that. Great content as always.

Hey Bryan, thank you for the kind words as always! I like both cameras 120p. The C70 has better overall picture quality (more dr, less noise, clog 2) compared to the 1dx iii. However, the 1dx iii has incredible tracking AF that makes it a great tool for gimbal work and fast moving subjects (cars, sports etc).
@@vladimirtalijan I would say (I own both) that the a7siii is slightly better for two reasons. First, the acquisition...there are zero autofocus limitations in 4K 120 which means eye tracking, etc. works the same as in 24p and second, those lack of limitations extend to image quality and dynamic range. The C70 isn’t using the DGO anymore at that frame rate so it’s image quality is technically less than its 24-60p image. Also, audio recording and conforming in camera are minor areas where the a7siii is better in my opinion. Listen, I’m splitting hairs a little, but if I need 4k120 for a shoot where human faces are involved, especially on a gimbal, I’m picking the a7siii every time. I’d pick the R5 over the c70 as well for 120, even with ridiculous file sizes and overheating. The autofocus performance hit at higher frame rates bother me.

Another great video Griffin! Had a question for you. I think you've had the 1DX III for quite a while now, have you noticed what some refer to as "oil spill"? This is when the mechanical shutter spills oil on the sensor, and it becomes evident when shooting clear, bright skies with stopped down apertures. Would love your take on this.
Thanks a lot Mohammad! I have had this issue with both the 1dx 2 and the 1dx 3 unfortunately. Although I find in reality it is almost a complete non-issue for me. I am almost always shooting at f/5.6 or shallower, and at those aputures you can't notice it at all. The only time I noticed it was on a studio portrait session shooting at f/11. There were some small specs on the image. Easy to take out on photoshop or lightroom though.
Really two different Cameras, but still a great review. What really separates the two is the lack of face only Autofocus on the 1DX3. If it had that it would be a different story if you do both mediums. I do like the color space of the 1DX and can be adjusted in post along with in camera adjustments. You summed it up good in that if you are a video centric shooter, C70 is a no brainer!!
The White and Black point of the 1dx mark iii is just not stretched out (As the case is in the C70) as the Raw is acutally Clog 1 and Da Vinci Resolve puts it into a Clog 2 "Wrapper". This means that if you take the histogram and stretch the black and white points you will see all that dynamic range beyond that "cut off point" created by Clog 1. Hope this helps.

My plan is to own a cinema camera, that i can always use and also make it a B-cam on larger projects. As of now i don‘t really have clients that need me to shoot on a c300iii or so but i wanna work on getting there, especially after having a chance to work with one recently. If i just settle for BM cameras i would could save quite some money but also give up my beloved FCPX i guess... thats my current challenge 🤷🏻♂️
Loved this presentation mr. G! I'm glad it was able to cover so much. It's def what I was looking for. I was surprised, I must say by the color rendition...less so by the dynamic range. The color rendition, for me left the 1DX3 lacking... and not by just a little. Fortunately, I don't have a C70 to keep reminding me....hahaha. In the end, for my budget and uses, I'll be delightedly sticking w the 1DX3 for a few years to come...(but, boy, that color rendition gap...surely is tantalizing) Thanks agin for putting this together for us.

Personally I would for the c70. The sensor tech is much better. Unless you have a strong preference for the larger body on the c300 Mark ii, I think it would be worth it to spend a little more and get the newer cleaner sensor. The c300 Mark ii struggles a bit with noisy shadows
so i know you have the 35 and 85 for c500 (me too just the canon cinema 35mm), but wasn't sure what 50mm you recommend? heard some people not liking the 1.2 because of the focus speed?
Hey Fraser! I have the 50 1.2 and it’s definitely not as good at focusing as the 35 1.4 ii and 85 1.4 ii. That said, I do like to use it when filming people with rougher skin because the lens is a little softer/less detailed and is more forgiving on skin

Ok there is one thing I wanted to know and I can't find anywhere, Is the C70 weather proof ? I know it has the holes for the fan but in some cases those not necessarialy expose the insides of the camera

I was impressed how little unbelievable that is the C70 at high ISO. You think its performance improves a bit using normal profiles (not LOGs). I feel that with my 5DMKIV, that when I record in very low light, I prefer not to use the LOG.
Ugh.. I wanted to love the C70.. but it has been nothing but problems for me personally. Don't get me wrong, when it works, it works great! Why does the slow/fast mode at 120fps always fail? I've tested 120fps with every high-end SD card on the market to see if it was a card issue, and the answer is no. lol surprisingly though, some people never have this issue. But at least half the people I talk to say it fails. The monitor is cheap. Camera feels extremely fragile. It is not weather proof like the 1dx III is. The AF is not reliable on a high speed, run-and-gun shoot. Think twice before shooting a live event with this camera unless you're shooting manual focus. I would never trust the C70 on a shoot where I have 1 chance to nail the shot. I found myself manually focusing for the last 2 months because that's how bad the AF is. Manual focus + Ronin doesn't pair nicely... Canon blew it with this camera. $5,500+ liability. 1DX MIII is the move.
It feels more like the hard plastic used in the c500 mark ii / c300 mark iii and unlike the body construction in the 1dx mark iii. I don't know of the technical materials used though.
I agree I wish it has the same functionality as the 1dx iii. As I understand it though, the 1dx iii has a special dedicated processor that is separate just for autofocus. I believe this give the autofocus more functionality. That said, this is very “canon like” to give some features and hold back others. Point in case is the R5 has some features not even available in the significantly more expensive 1DX3. And the c70 has features not available in the c500 Mark ii (120p) and that camera costs 3 times as much! 🙃
Love this video... great comparison. I actually have both camera's just like you... we are pretty much twins. Except i'm only 5'6 and am in Canada. by the way... i have been using my C70 outside here in some very frigid temperature (-20c) and it's been amazing. Also using it on the Ronin RS2 with the smallest lens i can find. It does function well on the RS2 but to be honest... it does struggle a bit. thanks again for the great content.

I believe the fans are specially designed to be weather proof. For light snow/rain it’s totally fine in my experience

The color differences are likely due to the lenses. Even 2 of the same model lens will have different colors.

It does struggle with dark skin tones. The 1dx 3 has eye af and performs much better. Would love an update on this via firmware!
