Steven's "I'm not saying it's bad" comes up quite a lot, very diplomatic, he's a nice guy. I know what he means though, my wife is obsessed with linkin park and it's not bad but it's not in regular rotation for me.
I think the thing with Eminem is that while it's white boy does black music he's never imitating black artists. He's rapping about his own life & experiences and it's kind of showing the overlap in growing up poor as shit in the US whether you're white trailer park trash or black from the hood. He's obviously rather obscene and over the top but I think that probably helped him get credit with the scene because nobody could accuse him of sanitising black music for white audiences, he got where he is because he's just really good at what he does.
IMO Stories from the City is PJ Harvey's peak. It's just a perfect album (also probably her most accessible and commercial) - I think To Bring You My Love and Is This Desire were progressing up to this and Uh Huh Her and the later ones were always in its shadow afterwards. Maybe it just hit me at the perfect time in my life, I dunno, but I love it.
15:00 -- As somebody who considers himself a "serious" music fan and heavy prog muso, I loved Linkin Park. Granted, I was not a fan of Hybrid Theory when I first heard the singles (at the time I was just slightly edging out of their demographic at age 20-21), but it was the left-field electronica of their 2004 single "Breaking The Habit" that stood me in my tracks and caused me to reassess everything that had come before. Once I gave closer listens to Hybrid Theory (which, although it was a late 2000 release, generally blew up bigger and is more of a "2001 album") and Meteora (2003), I realized that, yes, the band and producer Don Gilmore had perfectly captured and packaged that mix of NIN and nu-metal. But there is a core of a great album in there, if you can get past some of the screaming vocals and simplistic power-chords. Meteora is particularly a great evolution of the basic LP framework, and Minutes To Midnight (2007) and A Thousand Suns (2010) actually progressed further into new sounds and were even loosely thematic concept albums. Living Things (2012) was kind of a return to the original two album formula (mixed with a few new elements), The Hunting Party (2014) was an experiment in straight metal, and One More Light (2017) was their absolutely abysmal foray into sellout Milennial pop garbage and should be avoided at all costs. After Chester Bennington committed suicide in 2017, the band is more or less on ice and dormant. All in all, Linkin Park is generally a band that people love to lump in with other more generic nu-metal of the turn of the millennium (or mix them up with Limp Bizkit), when there is actually more to them than people realize. Also, Neil Peart was on record as being a fan, having written about them in his Traveling Music book.

But the songs are beautiful pop songs, and there is a place for that in this world. Aside from A Thousand Suns, it's probably the album that I end up going back to the most frequently these days. Beautiful melodies, beautiful production, and far more richness for the ear to enjoy than people give it credit for. As a long-time fan, Living Things and The Hunting Party have ended up as much weaker records to me.
@@Iopia100 I lightly enjoy a few songs from One More Light, but try as I might after about a dozen listens, I just couldn't get into it. It was just vastly *too* pop, even if I appreciate bands experimenting with their sounds and even like a good amount of pop music. But that is one of the great things about LP...they kept pushing themselves to try new things. Not everything was a home run, but at least it was never boring and you could never pigeonhole them into just one category.
Good to see Brave New World get a decent mention. It's an absolutely gorgeous album, great production, great song writing and great performances from all members.

This, I think, illustrates the limitations of Album culture as a way of understanding pop culture. It forgets that the basic unit of popular music is the single or now download. It's an industry/artform built on pocket money and to an extent novelty. I love albums, but I remember my Mum asking me "Why would you buy an album by one band, doesn't it get a bit samey?".
As a 90s kid that grew up on Linkin Park and Eminem and then discovered Porcupine Tree in the late 2000s, this is golden. Never thought I'd hear Steven and Tim discussing those artists 💯
If they thought the Goldfrapp album was full of songs like Bond themes then I wonder what they'll make of Rob Dougan's "Furious Angels"? (I guess I'll have to hope they cover the year 2002 for that though)

But, you just can't deny the MASSIVE impact LP had on a global level, not to forget they did this when internet and technology was still in the process of penetrating the masses. There are millions of kids, including me, who would've never picked up music or an instrument if it wasn't for LP. I also would never have discovered bands like Porcupine Tree and Opeth either. That's what Linkin Park did, which makes them very important culturally.

A lot of unfortunate comments when it comes to the Marshall Mathers LP, but otherwise, a good episode. That album broke a lot of ground in and of itself for being a self-aware album about the toxicities of gangster rap culture, being tongue-in-cheek about the nature of the extremities of the culture, while also wholeheartedly embracing the tropes to commentate not just on Eminem's upbringing, but also on the comments that moral guardians were making on Eminem's image, as well as how they refused to take care of their own to prevent tragedies like the Columbine and Westside Middle School shootings. The album does have a veneer of self-indulgence to it, but done in such an over-the-top manner that it really did do things differently lyrically and thematically. I will admit, as you guys have: it wouldn't have sold as well if it were done by a black artist, due to the overall racist conceptions of the American pop-culture zeitgeist, but it really should be acknowledged as a smarter album than a general footnote of its ubiquity and...unfortunate imaging as Eminem simply selling well for being white. Agree with you in that the extra length (79 minutes) on CDs sadly resulted in too many bands / performers filling in the time with lesser or detracting tracks than would have been on a 40-44 minute vinyl album. There was quite the art / skill to shaping vinyl albums as cohesive flowing wholes.
Tim and Steven, in regards to your “marmite” voice comment, you should check out the art-rock band Wild Beasts. They have since disbanded, however they have a singer that fits that description perfectly. They were influenced heavily by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel so I think you both should check them out. I love that PJ Harvey album. It's hard to put my finger on why except the songs just stand out to me. The melodies are very strong and catchy, and I ike the overrall ambience of the record. At the end of the day though a song will either stand out to you or it won't and there isn't always logical reason why.
I have never heard Steven talk about Ulver, does he not know about them or just think they are trash? This year they released Perdition City which should be in any top album list
Haha…I just basically said the same thing. Perdition City is a god tier album. I’ve been listening to that album since it came out and it never gets old. The vocals that come in halfway through Porn Piece or the Scars of Cold Kisses are the best vocals ever recorded in my opinion.
Funny, I feel the same way about PJ Harvey, she’s good, but something about her I never connected to and I don’t find her albums very interesting and they don’t really do anything for me, but yeah, she’s always up for awards.

I remember listening to OVO to death. It was my big introduction to some cool world music. Back in those days I loved the last track, Make Tomorrow and I still do. Paul Buchanan and Elizabeth Fraser vocals are just from beyond this world. Yes it's a bit long work but it still flows smoothly and quickly. I wouldn't say Father Son is the best track on the album, it's just one of its highlights if you ask me. And it's been 23 years and it still remains a gem to me.
It varies. Many of the albums we're familiar with and we'd have listened to many times over and subsequently refreshed our knowledge of them pre-podcast. However, some we'll have only listened to in passing and then 'revised' for the podcast.
PJ Harvey!? How dare you! Her output is a bit varied, Stories From The City... Is pretty good but Let England Shake is one of the most beautiful and profound records ever made. Fully deserving of all the accolades.

Steven is my idol, and I greatly admire him for his music, experimentation, musical orientation, and open-mindedness. However, when it comes to Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" album, I have to offer a different perspective. I haven't been a fan of Eminem for the last 20 years because it seems like he's been trying to move away from his original sound, character and cater more to the mainstream rap scene. In "The Marshall Mathers LP," apart from the typical street attitude, emotions, and extroversion, I struggle to find much depth. While songs like "Kim" showcase intense anger and agony, I feel that his self-deprecating humour and portrayal of sinful activities lack substance, especially since he no longer practices them today, all of these stuff are pretty great for a rap record I guess. Although his lyrical expressions and rhyming are impressive, they don't resonate with me on the same profound level as those of other rappers. Overall, I believe Eminem's earlier work, up until "The Eminem Show" album, truly showcased his greatness in the industry.
I don't get PJ Harvey either. One of those artists that do absolutely nothing for me. I don't think i ever listened to the Antony & The Johnsons debut, just because of the album cover. Hybrid Theory is pure aimless juvenile anger. Some parts (the bridge of In The End) sound like demos that still need work. The songwriting and sound definitely improved on Meteora. That was the biggest disservice to the Marshall Mathers LP. It's got more rock than hip-hop to it, so i don't know why it would be " not for you".
Steven, darling, if you think The Marshall Mathers LP is "Gangsta Rap" you're out of your mind. Also, his lyricism is at it's peak here. Are you just focusing on curse words? There is so much more depth to that LP, STAN alone is a fucking masterpiece, so much so, Elton John wanted to perform it with him live at the MTV awards, it's the perfect example of "The Art of Storytelling" coined by Britains own Slick Rick. Em's talent and wordplay are second to none on this LP. Is it meant to push buttons? Be outrageous? Be over the top? Yes, of course. That's why so many people loved it because it was so far removed from the norm it kinda swept people off their feet. Keeping in mind his prior effort, The Slim Shady LP went Triple Platinum. This is no enigma by any stretch. Even Rolling Stone magazine in the year 2000, which still had a rock music slant to it stated, "With the lyrical complexity and detailed narratives of Biggie, the hilarious, is-he-kidding-or-not button-pushing of Howard Stern, the disaffected angry-white-boy-ness of Fight Club and the fearless, kill-me-if-you-can energy of Tupac. He has a macabre imagination to rival Satan’s and an incredible ability to create new rhyme patterns. He has a frightening proclivity to spit venom one moment and humor the next, and a never-ending slew of jaw-dropping punch lines". You're right Steven, you are 5 years older than me but as you say "I feel like I'm 300 years old", yea, spot on mate.

I remember listening to OVO to death. It was my big introduction to some cool world music. Back in those days I loved the last track, Make Tomorrow and I still do. Paul Buchanan and Elizabeth Fraser vocals are just from beyond this world. Yes it's a bit long work but it still flows smoothly and quickly. I wouldn't say Father Son is the best track on the album, it's just one of its highlights if you ask me. And it's been 23 years and it still remains a gem to me.

It varies. Many of the albums we're familiar with and we'd have listened to many times over and subsequently refreshed our knowledge of them pre-podcast. However, some we'll have only listened to in passing and then 'revised' for the podcast.

Her output is a bit varied, Stories From The City... Is pretty good but Let England Shake is one of the most beautiful and profound records ever made. Fully deserving of all the accolades.

Steven is my idol, and I greatly admire him for his music, experimentation, musical orientation, and open-mindedness. However, when it comes to Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" album, I have to offer a different perspective.
I haven't been a fan of Eminem for the last 20 years because it seems like he's been trying to move away from his original sound, character and cater more to the mainstream rap scene. In "The Marshall Mathers LP," apart from the typical street attitude, emotions, and extroversion, I struggle to find much depth. While songs like "Kim" showcase intense anger and agony, I feel that his self-deprecating humour and portrayal of sinful activities lack substance, especially since he no longer practices them today, all of these stuff are pretty great for a rap record I guess. Although his lyrical expressions and rhyming are impressive, they don't resonate with me on the same profound level as those of other rappers.
Overall, I believe Eminem's earlier work, up until "The Eminem Show" album, truly showcased his greatness in the industry.
I like Steven Wilson, but I wish he would quit repeating "Yorkie boy".

Hybrid Theory is pure aimless juvenile anger. Some parts (the bridge of In The End) sound like demos that still need work. The songwriting and sound definitely improved on Meteora.
That was the biggest disservice to the Marshall Mathers LP. It's got more rock than hip-hop to it, so i don't know why it would be " not for you".
Steven, darling, if you think The Marshall Mathers LP is "Gangsta Rap" you're out of your mind. Also, his lyricism is at it's peak here. Are you just focusing on curse words? There is so much more depth to that LP, STAN alone is a fucking masterpiece, so much so, Elton John wanted to perform it with him live at the MTV awards, it's the perfect example of "The Art of Storytelling" coined by Britains own Slick Rick. Em's talent and wordplay are second to none on this LP. Is it meant to push buttons? Be outrageous? Be over the top? Yes, of course. That's why so many people loved it because it was so far removed from the norm it kinda swept people off their feet. Keeping in mind his prior effort, The Slim Shady LP went Triple Platinum. This is no enigma by any stretch. Even Rolling Stone magazine in the year 2000, which still had a rock music slant to it stated, "With the lyrical complexity and detailed narratives of Biggie, the hilarious, is-he-kidding-or-not button-pushing of Howard Stern, the disaffected angry-white-boy-ness of Fight Club and the fearless, kill-me-if-you-can energy of Tupac. He has a macabre imagination to rival Satan’s and an incredible ability to create new rhyme patterns. He has a frightening proclivity to spit venom one moment and humor the next, and a never-ending slew of jaw-dropping punch lines". You're right Steven, you are 5 years older than me but as you say "I feel like I'm 300 years old", yea, spot on mate.
