Thanks for playing this. The Moody Blues are quite possibly the most underrated bands of all time and most of todays "superstars" cannot hold a candle to them. BTW, the flute player is Ray Thomas, an original member who recently passed away.
This, my young friends, is real music.
Back in the 60s and 70s we had in my opinion the best music to listen too. It was a great time to live in.
Justin Hayward is 76 now and still touring! His voice is as beautiful and moving as it was in this video! I was blessed to see him live last year and hope to see him again this. Glad you enjoyed this.
I wished I got the chance to see them… I would listen to this song and my Mom would sit next to me, telling me how much she loved this song …😘
I remember when I was 16yo. My friends dad caught my friend and i smoking a joint. He sat us down and pulled out his old vinyls. He played this album. I have been a fan ever since. I've seen the Moody Blues 4 times in concert and every time was an amazing experience. The last time was the 50th anniversary of this album. Playing the whole album in its entirety. Simply amazing!!!
If the friend's dad broke out Moody Blues, you basically got rewarded for smoking a joint, kudos 🎶🎵
What a great story to commemorate this song.! If my mom had only been do cool.
This was recorded May of 2000. His voice was younger then and he still sounds just as good now. Both the flutist Ray Thomas and the drummer Graeme Edge have both passed on to a greater concert hall. Justin said that with the passing of Graeme that the Moody Blues are no more. Google searched......The group continued touring until Edge retired from performing at the end of 2018, although the possibility of a return was mentioned in interviews by Lodge. On 11 November 2021, however, Edge died, marking the end of the Moody Blues.
But both Justin and John perform as solo artists still into 2023.
Just after Justin Hayward joined The Moody Blues, they were under contract with Deram Records. Deram owned a new stereo technology and wanted to promote it for sale to consumers. Someone came up with the idea to have an orchestra play short pieces before and after each Moody Blues song on the album 'Days of Future Passed.' This was done to promote the sound quality of the stereo players for sale and to promote The Moody Blues. The song 'Nights in White Satin' performed live in this video is a recreation of the song followed by the orchestra just like from the original 1967 recording. The album is one of the finest recordings ever with The Moody Blues and worth listening to. My favorite song on the album is Tuesday Afternoon.
One of the greatest albums ever.
Just one of those songs that has held up over the years and still as great now as when it was released 55 years ago.
The orchestral strings set the tone of a great love found and lost. It builds thought out the pain felt. The flute solo adds the hunting note of that tragic loss. It will leave that feeling with you forever. Combined with his voice you truly feel it. In times of quiet this song will suddenly replay in your mind and you are back once again.
The Moody Blues their first hit in ‘ . 1964’ Justin Haywood joined the band with fellow Guitarist John Lodge around 1967. The band released a concept album with full orchestra in that year called ‘ Days of Future Past’ which this was part. The album takes you through the day culminating in Nights In White Satin and yes the Flute Player was part of the Band. They have done some terrific albums!
Legendary above all other legendary love songs, especially with the orchestra backing Justin!I saw them in concert decades after the release of the record and they still sounded great. Still one of my favorite bands so many years later.
I grew up listening to this band. Part of the soundtrack of my life. The Voice, Gemini Dreams, Blue World are some of my all time favorite songs.
They were pretty much the beginning of my spiritual journey at the age of 15 as I began to discover church wasn't where I would learn what I needed. I was no longer afraid.
Love seeing young beautiful people enjoying the music from my youth. Thankyou ❤
Justin has a great voice. Really good tone and breath control. He is so calming to listen to. AND, his guitar licks re darn good also........ And there is a flute in this song! The Moody Blues are one of my favorite bands, as is Pink Floyd. Bus loads of talent in each group. At 8:30 something folks think that is the end. It is not, The orchestra is not finished!!.... The ending WILL melt your brain!!! This is one of the bands I grew up with.. On a side note----There is NO bad Moody Blues music, NONE. You all take care.
Don’t you wish today’s music was more like this!!!
I get to experience my first time heating this epic song for the first time through their reaction. That his voice, flute, drums, lyrics,.....can still move one in the same way half a century later is phenomenal. Ray on flute at his age is a testimony to how great as musicians they were. They endured the test of time. I ßy this with tears of joy dampening my face.
The most successful reactors act like normal grown up people , not children .
Puerile is the best description. Too busy trying to be cool. And failing.
All that was missing was the gong at the end. Such a great song! Thanks, folks. Ray Thomas on flute - a band member.
Enjoyed your reaction very much. You have a new subscriber. :)
Love me some Moody Blues!! You feel the vibe when enjoying their music!!
They did a tour when I was a kid where they played each concert with an orchestra and I got to see them play with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra. It was probably the best concet I’ve ever been to. My dad and mom took us and I wanna say I was 11 or 12. It was beautiful. How could you not be a fan after that?
Anyway ive seen them live like 10 times or so over the course of my life. I was under 7 the very first we saw then 😀.
Didn't get the full version it's a must to see relisten and make sure you have the full version.
Saw them in concert several times , simply an amazing experience !
5 times for me and 2 of them with the full orchestra backing them. The concert at Paul Masson winery, Ca. is my favorite of all ( just the main band members) I mean all of the concerts of near 40 of vastly different bands I have been too. Only Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers have I seen more but Moody Blues beats even TP. A fan since 1973.
I'm a big Beatles fan but this song is perfect in every way
Originally released in 1967..... this and Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harem) are probably 2 of the greatest songs ever written
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BLOW YOUR MIND YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THE ALBUM CUT OF THIS SONG IT IS LONGER AND HAS SOME REALLY INTERESTING POETRY AT THE END.
A lot of the success of this song goes to Peter Knight, who was an orchestral arranger for the record company. The band would send him demos of the songs and he would write the orchestra parts. This song is one of the last songs on the amazing album “Days of Future Passed”. It was one of the first concept albums presenting one day in the life of a man from dawn till bedtime. It’s a mind blowing album and everyone should listen to it.
The Moody Blues and bands like Procul Harem used orchestras quite often in the music. Just shows how creative and brilliant their music was
Beautiful!
Ray Thomas is the Flute Player, RIP
Greame Edge is the (older) drummer, RIP
John Lodge is the Bassist (Still going strong and touring himself with his setlist chock full of *his* Moody Blues material)
Please do react to "Ride My See Saw" from this concert!
the Moody Blues and Justin Hayward have been a favourite of mine for many years. I was lucky enough to see them perform three times. Great live performers. Loved your reaction to a legendary band.
The flute player was a member of the band since beginning in the 60’s.
I've been listening to this since I was a kid. I saw Justin and the the MB in Phoenix in 1970 and AGAIN in 1988 when they toured Germany.. Same London Festival Orchestra. There's a reason this is called Classic Rock man. Never again will it be replicated.
Love seeing you younger gens get hypnotized into 60's-70's music. My kids do the same. My youngest daughter, 35 yrs old now is a huge Doors "Light My Fire" fan. I was visiting her and her husband one day and we were watching youtube music videos. It was my choice and I put on the original black and white video of Iron Butterfly's "In A Gadda Da Vida", the 15 minute full version. My daughter, her husband and my 2 grand daughters didn't move or say a word the entire song. They didn't understand the blotches so much but they didn't quite understand what I meant when I tried to explain it was a psychedelic thing of the times. Anyway Jon, off topic, your haircut would never fly in 60's or 70's. LOL
Even though these two youngsters still have no idea…about anything (sorry), they are to be applauded for their initiative and interest in the music of the Moody Blues and producing a video about it. It is not easy to explain the positive impact this band has had on people young and old for 55 years. Their music was possible given the unique talents/genius and high integrity of each band member. Their music expanded the realm of emotion and imagination to each listener with ne’er a swear word nor words of hatred in the lyrics. I am 73 years old, retired US Army combat veteran with subsequent careers in industry and education. I am not one of few but of many who say and credit the music of the Moody Blues for helping to save their lives from despair, drugs and alcohol. The world in my time was a mix of wondrous magic and certain trauma. Now, presently the world is getting worse with no apparent solution. Graeme Edge (drummer Moody Blues) put it this way, ‘after thousands of years, men still beat women, children still go missing, and we still have wars’. Civilizations come and go making virtually the same mistakes, this time around however is said (is written) to be the end. But there is purpose in this world and if you listen closely to the music of the Moody Blues, it points to one God, the Creator, the Almighty Who was, Who is, and Who is to come.
Justin is preforming in Phoenix Arizona on 6/25/2024 He is 77 years old now
Too bad you guys didn’t do the extended studio version. You’d really trip. BREATHE DEEP!!
Stupid not to do the long
OK you all, brag time.. I saw the Moody Blues in Raleigh, NC back in the mid 1980's. They were GREAT. If you all ever get the chance, go to their concert. They are one of those great bands that live is like listening to a music CD or an album. My favorite part is the build-up near the end beginning around 8:something.... It is unreal. Well we are almost there so I will stop for now. Check it OUT! YES Jon it was WOW!!!!!!!!!!........ TAKE CARE YOU ALL.
Jeff Wayne from the War of the Worlds wanted a singer "like the guy" who sang "Nights in White Satin" for the song "Forever Autumn" so they pursued him. The flute player, Ray Thomas, was one of the original members of the Moody Blues (Justin and world-rated bass player, John Lodge, joined in 1966). Ray was a multi-instrumentalist, composer and a very good singer. The Moody Blues had 5 writer/composers and 4 singers. Justin was one.
Another group that used orchestra was Procol Harum Denmark 2006. Gary was 22 when he recorded the song Whiter Shade Of Pale. He was 61 in the 2006 video
This the concept album "Days of Future Nights" You have to listen to the entire album to get the full impact.
This song is so beautiful yet haunting. The Miody Blues are the greatest classic rock band to ever come out of Great Britain. You need to listen to Days of Future Past in it's entirety.❤
There is nothing like a Symphony Orchestra to build up to, and then deliver, a dramatic conclusion.😊
Remember they are performing this about 45 years after they first sang it
Great song on the radio in the early 70s.
First came out in 67
@@roderickdunn3464 I remember but was on the radio constantly in 72.
I think it was rereleased. It may depend on where you are. I started work in 1970 , so rarely listened to the radio.
This was the sound of my youth. I have to say it......we had the best musical generation ever.
Justin Hayward was 19 when he wrote this song. You need to listen to the full concept album.
Yep At 76 he still knocks it out out of the park. He wrote this when he was 19 coming off a serious broken relationship. He let it slip it was an engagement. People think it’s a happy love song but it is to me & he’s mentioned it as well it’s about the death of a true love. I’ve always felt of it that way since I heard for the first time when I was 6. Yep. 6. Long story but all I could think why is this man crying?
One of the first number one songs in a minor key. Around 1967.
We took these amazing works of art for granted in the 60s and 70s as teenagers. Silly us, we thought music would always be this great and would only get better! Little did we know.
How is it possible you've not heard this song?
the live video was great but it was missing a poem at the end so you check that one as well.
I saw them live near Miami around 1999-2000. They were outstanding.
Unfortunately the drummer and flute player have passed since this performance. surviving members are Justin and the bass player.
Masterpiece ....of course Nice guys?
listen to the full studio version with the spoken word in it
Love your guys attitude and love seeing your smiling faces, We all need to smile and I do it all the time!
Great Band Great song! So DAMN good!
I love this song. Back on August 16, 1977, I was in El paso tx listening to this song on the radio. Then the announcer broke in, saying that Elvis presley had died. I'll never forget that.
Hes fabulous
King Theoden plays a nice flute lol
I have loved this groupe and still do but I'd love for your and to come to Savannah Georgia
He was 63 years old at the time of this concert
He wrote this song when he was 19. Real music, not the rubbish we have now.
For My Lady-live at red rocks
Be sure you watch the extended version!!!
I don't know where you got kimono from! The drummer was wearing a leather jacket.
You mentioned War of the World's......first time I've heard anyone reference it with this group and you are correct... War of the World's can out musical in the late 70'w. Jeff Wayne's War of the World's it on UA-cam
Try being born when this song hit the charts, and having this played. You'll enrich your psyche by delving deep into this era of rock. It'll touch your souls, give ya goosebumps, and tears. If you wanna hear crazy flute, "Juthro Tull" will prove the piped-piper of Rock Troubadours. But for more ethereal fantasy rock of this depth.. Procol Harum "Whiter Shade of Pale"... BTW, the White Satin, was implying "between the sheets"... That's why it feel so intimate, passionate, "Sexy AF"...
So meny memory's. Thanks and hugs from Italy.🇮🇹🤘
Loved your reaction to this song. I was surprised to see them in their older years sounding exactly the same as they did when I saw them live at a concert in 1968 in Philadelphia. They haven't lost a beat and still as good looking. So happy you enjoy the music of my youth and are keeping it alive. This album (CD?) was fabulous if you can get it. Called Days Of Future Past.
when an orchestra is added to anything - it's just better
Classic rock - understood and revered only by those who lived and loved in the day.
Incredible music that stands the test of time.
Wonderful! Don't know why I didn't expect this from you guys, I mean, you did Lindsey Stirling so you obviously have taste. Love the Moody Blues. First saw them in CA when I was in the Corps. Changed my life. Really. Small town Texas boy.
Actual title is "The Night: Nights In White Satin" closes the album Days of Future Passed. The Day, Dawn : Dawn is a Feeling. The Morning : Another Morning. Lunch Break: Peak Hour, The Afternoon: Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?) : Time to Get Away, Evening: The Sun Set: Twilight Time, The Night: Nights in White Satin. Forever Afternoon is commonly called Tuesday Afternoon
Just a quick note. This flute player is excellent. There's no question. That's one of the reasons. I like The Moody Blues, but there's another group also that uses a lot of flute in their music. And that is jethrotal to ULL. just tell when you cuz. If you like this and I can see you do. I'm sure that you would probably like quite a bit of jeffrey toll's music.
That whole album, Days of Future Passed, was a revolution in popular music.
Days of Future Past was an amazing album. Had it in the 70’s.
His voice is just as good now as it was back in the day
Fantastic live performance.
I must have been about 12 when this song came iout in the States....and even though I knew nothing about love yet.....it touched me so deeply.
One of my all time favorites!
MOODY BLUES, "NIGHT'S IN WHITE SATIN". 1967 Magic. The Album "Days Of Future Past" was recorded with the orchestra soud. More Moody Blues.. "TUESDAY AFTERNOON", "RIDE MY SEESAW", "THE STORY IN YOUR EYES", "I'M JUST A SINGER IN A ROCK AND ROLL BAND"..
A Bronx Tale. If you know, you know.
in my day they were modern day minstrels
introduction to this channel was enougjh.
Have a chill night, put on headphones, dim the lights and listen to the full album Days of Future Passed, it's a journey morning, afternoon, and evening. You will love it
Justin was the guy who sang songs like Forever Autumn on the original recording of War Of The Worlds.
76 years old.
This was where music as we know it began! Prior to this album, only classical music had ever been released in stereo. All other records were in mono. Decca records wanted to test the market for stereo popular music and wanted to hire an orchestra to play instrumental versions of pop records. They gave a budget to a young exec who had happened to see The Moody Blues in his local pub the night before, and spent the money orchestrating them. Decca were furious but released the album anyway. If it had been a failure, you could be listening in mono..
Used to listen to the magical journey of their ' Threshold of a Dream ' album. Class act
Just try their albums 'to our children' children and On the threashhold of a dream
You want to see same thing like this gary Newman great live performance
I wish you could have heard the poem.
Exelente escolha
Que musica
I've been looking forward to this one. And just a note, it was meant to be a reaction to the original recording, but Jon said that this is one of maybe only a half dozen songs in WH history when there copyright owner blocked them outright. I suggested we try a live version (as the artists tend to own them), and it worked! I'm just glad we can at least admire this version of the song, even though it wasn't what was originally intended. Justin is a true legend. :)
Nice, thank you for helping out with the content if this tremendous channel. The participating subscribers have been awesome. Thanks again !
@@markdraine3571 You raise a good point, Mark. I've listened to a lot of reaction channels, mainly because I just love music, but the WH channel is special. I've always thought that it was because they are a real band, and they show it in their reactions. Real reactions with real insight. But they allow us fans of music to contribute too, and we get to feed off each other. I've sooo enjoyed being able to share the music that has made such an impact on my own life, and then I get to experience what other people share! To me, that's what music is supposed to do!
You like flutes in rock and roll? Check out Jethro Tull
Still good but when he was in his 20's it was truly spectacular
You two youngsters are so cute!
To truly appreciate Nights in White Satin, you should really listen to the entire Days of Future Past album. The songs blend together into a spectacular journey of life
Most of their songs require Orquestra .
