Justin Hayward wrote this song when he was 19. Some have said the lyrics were written many years prior, but the music was composed when he was 19. It's hard to imagine writing such a deep song at that age.
Moody 's were still performing up to about12 years ago!,individual members still performing today!,80,million albums sold!, listen to' isn't life strange!'
“Days of Futures Past” is a concept album and it runs like a movie score imo. Beautiful, deep and moving album. This song goes into “Late Lament” poem to music style. I am 67 yrs old and the moody blues are my all time favorite band....got to see them in concert two times, once in the late 70s and again in 1987. Yes they did acid and wrote music while tripping....both times I saw them my husband and I were also tripping!
I was raised on Moody Blues! So happy to see you guys checking them out. Last concert I went to with my Mom about 10 months before she passed was Justin Hayward solo tour (he is the singer in the Moody Blues) and it was so special because it was my Mom wh raised me on them. Along with Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. This made my heart happy seeing you guys listening. ✌️❤️
Seeing them live with accompanying orchestra was a real treat. And not a bad track on this album that covers an entire day. "Tuesday Afternoon" is another exceptional track.
The Singer, Justin wrote this song when he was just 19. His band is from Birmingham UK I believe . His girlfriend had just bought him some white satin sheets. What an awesome love song.
The Moody Blues weren't really a "blues" band, they were actually pioneers of progressive rock. Huge & diverse catalog ,if you dive in. Check out: Question The Story in Your Eyes Gypsy Tuesday Afternoon
Moody Blues, "Nights In White Satin", maybe, the greatest of all of their hits, I know it's definitely one of my favorite songs by them. They have so many like, "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock and Roll Band", "Tuesday Afternoon/Evening Time To Get Away", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My see Saw", "Your Wildest dreams" and more. I thought for a moment that the song was going to be the true full version, which has it's own title, "Late Lament", it's a poem set to music, it's pretty cool, maybe you'd like to listen to it sometime. Thanks so much for this reaction!
The Moody Blues are amazing! This one song is off a concept album about a day in life. They were one of the first bands to incorporate an orchestra and a concept album. Tuesday afternoon is another hit off this album.
Moody Blues are considered one of the first symphonic rock and progressive rock bands. Think along the line of how certain Pink Floyd albums have like a central theme all the way through. That’s similar to how the Moody Blues were on Days of Future passed in the mighty year of 1967. In 1967 alone you had Hendrix, The Doors, The Beatles with Sgt Pepper, Traffic, early Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett, Cream , Stones and the Who, just to name a few in that year alone.
This song was released the year I was born. Along the same lines is, "From the Beginning" by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, I think you'd enjoy that one too.
Though that double-album is worth an exploration in one long video. Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds is amazing. I have the original version on CD that I ripped to my computer ages ago.
Yay!! Breathe deep, the gathering gloom...I hope you guys can listen to the rest of it. It's called "Late Lament". "Tuesday Afternoon" is worth a listen. Glad you're checking these cats out!
@@connieleighton4375 , yes! I don’t get it. Because that was THE only way I would ever hear it played on the radio. In my opinion it is just incomplete without “Late Lament “ , and of course the gong.
Absolutely LOVE this track! So much so, it became the wedding song for my wife and I! For me, this is one of THE ultimate love songs. It's message is eternal. Thanks for making my morning. The reason why it sounds like it belongs in a musical is because the album it came from, Days Of Future Passed, released in 1967, is a concept album. Each song deals with a portion of the day (starting at dawn, morning, lunch, afternoon, evening and finally - the night - this song). It was a very early example (some say 'first') of 'orchestral' rock - where the band did their bits, but in conjunction with an orchestra - and the result was pure magic!! Even if you don't do a reaction to it, please, PLEASE do yourself a favour and listen to the whole album (with headphones or a really good stereo system, because the production is stellar!) Standout tracks besides this are: Tuesday Afternoon, The Sun Set, Twilight Time, Dawn Is A Feeling, Another Morning - I've basically just named the entire album!! Other Moodies must listens are: The Story In Your Eyes (much more rocking number), Question, Melancholy Man, I'm Just a Singer In A Rock N Roll Band, Gypsy, The Voice, Lovely To See You, Your Wildest Dreams...for starters. Messages of peace, love and understanding are strung throughout their catalogue.
This is the most amazing real music, real musicians, real instruments. Beautiful music. Get low put on your headphones on and listen to the whole album Days of Future Passed. It's A journey, a musical journey. All their albums were a journey
I love this song but the album version was extended and had a poem included, which is definitely worth a listen. Another band you should check out called AnnenMayKantereit. They do a cover of Tom's Diner with Giant Rooks. Both bands are from Germany.
Like many of the British classic rock bands the Moody Blues essentially created a genre of their own. No shortage of great songs, and complete albums, from the Moody's.
You were right…..There is more…At one point in their career they reproduced this & added some more orchestration & a spoken word poem. Both of which are so beautiful!…..
My brain certainly started saying: Breathe deep, the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade, from every room. Then I realized it's been a long long time since hearing it cause I can't quite find the next line in my memory, I know it's there somewhere...

Oh lovely! I was classically trained on flute and my mom gave me a best of moody album and I would play with it to my hearts content to this song and "Tuesday afternoon". This was THE "Slow Dance Song" when I was in High School in the early 70s. The entire "Days of Future Past" album with the London Synphonic Orchetra is great. If you want to hear a more "rockin'" Moody Blues check their song "The Story In Your Eyes"

This song always reminds me of another song for some unknown reason 🤷🏼♂️”A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procal Harum (the studio version) both are great, timeless songs no doubt 🖤🥶
My dad saw The Moody Blues in concert a few years ago and he said he knew he was old because he finally got to see one of his favorite bands from his college days (when they were popular) in concert and their drummer had an oxygen tank.
Nice reaction gentlemen. Back in the day if you didn't own this album you were L7, square daddy O. Time to return to prog and Yes, South Side Of The Sky would be a start. 🙏🍁
You guys need to react to more psychedelic / blues rock. I love metal, but some of these drug-induced jams can be just as heavy in their own way. Some suggestions from me, a psych junkie: July - Dandelion Seeds Dead Meadow - Sleepy Silver Door Lincoln Street Exit - Dirty Mother Blues Bubble Puppy - Todd's Tune Radio Moscow - 250 Miles Morgen - Beggin' Your Pardon (Miss Joan) Comets on Fire - Dogwood Rust Arzachel - Leg Blue Cheer - Parchment Farm Jefferson Airplane - The Last Wall of the Castle Tomorrow - Hallucinations Freeport - Forty Long Faces 13th Floor Elevators - Roller Coaster I would also suggest The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but it's most likely copyright-blocked :(
Saw them in 1968 at Eagles Auditorium in Seattle, WA. After they played the album, Nights In White Satin. We cheered and screamed for more. Singer said they had no more music to play, but would do their set again. He also added that no group ever cheered for them. They did play. No other band ever did that.

Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy's spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son.
Senior citizens wish they were young.
Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
And we decide which is right
And which is an illusion?
That is an amazing piece of music!!!
I always get goosebumps listening to this.. My dad bought me up to use music as a expression.. I lost my whole family in a very short period of time.. This is my I just want a little cry song
Try Go Now. It is an early version of the Moody Blues. Lead singer on the song was Denny Lane who later joined McCartney in Wings
Love the reactions to this, this song is is so unexpected. I remember listening to it for first few times....
This song always reminds me of another song for some unknown reason 🤷🏼♂️”A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procal Harum (the studio version) both are great, timeless songs no doubt 🖤🥶
Me too, I wonder why?
My dad saw The Moody Blues in concert a few years ago and he said he knew he was old because he finally got to see one of his favorite bands from his college days (when they were popular) in concert and their drummer had an oxygen tank.
Saw them in concert at the tower theater outside of Philadelphia in upper Darby love love them. Awesome band
Some suggestions from me, a psych junkie:
July - Dandelion Seeds
Dead Meadow - Sleepy Silver Door
Lincoln Street Exit - Dirty Mother Blues
Bubble Puppy - Todd's Tune
Radio Moscow - 250 Miles
Morgen - Beggin' Your Pardon (Miss Joan)
Comets on Fire - Dogwood Rust
Arzachel - Leg
Blue Cheer - Parchment Farm
Jefferson Airplane - The Last Wall of the Castle
Tomorrow - Hallucinations
Freeport - Forty Long Faces
13th Floor Elevators - Roller Coaster
I would also suggest The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but it's most likely copyright-blocked :(
Saw them in 1968 at Eagles Auditorium in Seattle, WA. After they played the album, Nights In White Satin. We cheered and screamed for more. Singer said they had no more music to play, but would do their set again. He also added that no group ever cheered for them. They did play. No other band ever did that.
