+Adam Cardon Agreed, even though I think Chris is a more skilled player, the magic just wasn't the same without Josh. His personality permeates the music when he's in the band.
I like how Travis is really trying to push the Sirius Secret Handshake to Josh! He's like " You gotta learn it, it's time." I love the fact that as they've matured as individuals and in their music, that they all can be silly and childish too! Coheed and Cambria For Even After Life!!
You know a band is special to you when you thoroughly enjoy hearing their guitarist list world records. And then pick his nose. And then the other guitarist lists presidents in rhyming form.
Coheed drinking game. Drink every time Claudio says "you know" during an interview. You'll be throwing up/dead of alcohol poisoning halfway through this documentary.
Just watched the first 5 minutes of The Fiction Will See the Real then switched to this. Claudio seems like a different man now. Of course he was great then, but he just really seems like he's where he needs to be in life now. On point, out of his shell, genuine, and happy. The whole band actually. Great to see these guys doing so good.
Claudio could not only play that bush. He could play that bush WELL. By the time he was done with it, he'd have created another favorite song for me to listen to on repeat until every note was drilled into my head.
32:35 you can't label, or break down Coheed, they are an essence, a feeling, a movement. the band/music/lyrics/artwork all progress together and in an over analytically world like the one we live in people tend to try and label or brand something. the true children of the fence just go with it, knowing that it will forever change you and be part of you, and in some instances guide you through life. the band/movement as a whole will forever be in it's own class, alongside Jimi, Cash, and Elvis.
thatguytheory They're pretty good prog rock, especially for a band younger than 1978 I like them too, but defying classification is not one of their attributes. Love Claudio's creativity but you can definitely find other bands doing this kinda thing, in their own way. The sci-fi is a newer kick but even that was done before they started doing it.
SAagreedSA I understand your point of view but to me they are in a Class all of their own as they pretty much changed my life (possibly saved it) from a devastating time in my life. I've always turned to music to express myself and to deal with difficult times and positive times, I believe that the music you listen to is a reflection of yourself much as the artists who Write the music, it is a reflection of themselves at the time and the feelings they're going through. Good writers at least that chose music as a form of expression over an income. I was going through a rough breakup that was hard to deal with when Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Vol. 1 came out. It just so happens that Claudio was going through a similar situation while writing this album, before (fortunately for him) getting back with his now Wife, so that album help me cope in a way that I credit to changing/saving my life. I didn't intend this to be so lengthy, I'm just glad that you enjoy Coheed and continue to support great music!
I get a lot out of reading about Claudio's process, as a songwriter - I cottoned on to the fact that it was mostly autobiography and secondarily a story about some sci-fi stuff on my own, but reading about the specifics of the albums has made my appreciation for them grow. And, hey, I LOVE me some Devin Townsend music. Really good stuff. But most people think he's a nerd who makes weird music about dysfunction and puppets, him included I think. Sometimes we get a disproportionate amount out of somebody just doing their own thing - artists invite that more than most, I guess. If that's you and Coheed, that's totally cool, too.
SAagreedSA Sorry I didn't realize I was on my other account, I'm thatguytheory as well lol. I'm also more biased because I've been following them since '02 and I first saw them open for Thrice and Thursday, since then I've seen them a total of 15 times (If you count the 4 nights of the Neverender as 4 individual shows) Over the years not just their music has progressed, but the mastering of their craft and learning of their instruments more and more has lead them to put on better and better LIVE Shows over time. I tend to feel a sense of "growing up" with the band and obviously while not being a part of the creative process, can feel a sense of contempt as if I was there and sometimes the songs are directed towards me (As I suspect a lot of die hard fans would). I know it sounds crazy but I feel this is why to me, they deserve to be in a class of their own and will always be the best band ever in my eyes.
I agree with you that it has been cool seeing a bunch of dudes who were very clearly inspired by At The Drive In turn, over time, into a hella competent and very creative prog band in their own right. Nobody more so than Claudio, who has in his career not only matured a lot in his vocal control, but also not allowed his ego to get in the way of making wise decisions like lowering their general performance range so as to better fit within his easily accessible vocal range. He was pitchy but really high-pitched back in the SSTB days, and over time he's realized it matters more how WELL you sing, not just how /high/. Still has it for those high songs live, though, with the modest downtune at least. I feel exactly the same about Devin that you do about Coheed, though - some of the first real music I listened to of my own free will, and I got to watch him grow as an artist and deepen tremendously in his understanding of the world and in his expertise at conveying that understanding through songwriting. It's a heck of a treat getting to "grow up" with bands like that. I unfortunately lost touch with C&C's music for about five years after Good Apollo came out, then ended up getting NWFT and YoTB both in 2010. Then I didn't pay attention for ANOTHER five years, and just got their two newest albums (The Afterman ones) last week. Suffice it to say I am incredibly impressed with their continued progress as a band, but I don't feel like I get to claim the same kind of relationship to 'em as a fan that someone like yourself would.
thank you for leaving in the "we both work at dominos pizza delivery" that was so unnecessary .. but i couldn't stop smiling because those 2 young blokes have never had heartbreak.. their whole lives were in front of them at that moment
I was watching this to find some insight on what it's like to be the head of one of the best bands ever, and also to have to best head of hair in the world. I found some very useful information.
JOSH! So good to have you back buddy, it really really REALLY wasn't the same without you! I don't think I've ever felt that way about a drummer before
At 31:27 that's me talking to Josh, sounding stupid and starstruck, asking him about his unique open-hand style of drumming, holy shit!!! Life dream fulfilled, being on a Coheed special feature like this. Along with my name in the book, I can die a happy man now. This album is so amazing, I can't wait for Descension.
1:24:40 I actually found myself in the midst of the fog in the KY theatre. That night was amazing: friends were made, songs were goofed, and Chondra rocked gotye like no other.
this is extremely entertaining as well as provides an insight into coheed as people which I think people sometimes forget about bands.. they're real people with real personalities.
Claudio and Travis are really down to earth and nice. I met them after a show in Sacramento ( my profile pic is that night) and they chatted and took pictures and at no point did it feel like we were bugging them or they wanted to leave.
I hope future albums have illustrations to go along with the concepts like The Afterman has had, it really adds a whole new level and is so enjoyable to see.
'i thought it was a toy" hahahaha I fucking love everything about coheed and this just really words cant even describe haha, much love for putting this up thanks man
Was it the Jones Beach show? That was my first Coheed concert and it was so blah.. then the story was on the news after.. Its obvious that something was going on, and the band was really off.
I sympathize so much with Zach on the surrealness of joining a band you're a fan of. Happened to me, and it's been the best thing that's ever happened. You guys like Prog? Check out The Technicolor Nightmare on Soundcloud or Reverbnation. That's my band, and I think you'll dig it.
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! This is the first time I've ever seen one of your comments on youtube(We are in a band together, just an FYI). Anyway. I'm drunk and tired(at 3:00am)....but I feel obligated to watch this whole thing since you linked it to me.
I've rewatched this like a million times, but this time around, I'm trying to listen in on the side conversations that happen, for example listen for Josh at @27:00 "I would sweat like an UNGODLY amount" haha

Around 33:20. Claudio is plenty technically proficient. He has technique all day. He may not be theoretically proficient but his musical instincts are superb. The truth lies in how it sounds and he's probably known that since the beginning. Same goes for Travis and Josh. I'm not as certain about the bass players. If I could teach them theory for a couple weeks, they could become twice the band. But that just might make the universe explode because there's only so much awesome. A knowledge of theory takes all trial and error out of the equation basically. Anything you want to say, musically can be said instantaneously without having to find it. That's why certain bands can improvise really cohesive and elaborate music together and never run out or have a train wreck. Imagine if Coheed and Cambria developed that ability and included segments like that into their show. I need to build up my channel more and see if I can issue an official challenge to the band (in good humor of course).
Wholeheartedly disagree with you. This band would be way different if they were trained in theory. Claudio even tried to go study with a songwriter to learn some of it but rejected it after some training. When you know too much about theory, songwriting can be more of a math equation than something that comes from the heart. I just feel like that kind of theoretical proficiency could overwrite the genuine passion and emotion that Claudio draws from to write his music. The Suffering and The Running Free choruses - both I-V-vi-IV progressions, but honestly who gives a shit? The songs both stand on their own and only the theory nerds will even pick up on it. To your average listener they're totally different. The band has achieved massive success on their own, the old-school way. They learned by doing, and pouring their hearts into their art and they made it. Saying that "If I could teach them theory for a couple weeks, they could become twice the band." is beyond arrogant, and borderline delusional. Do you truly believe that? I'm gonna teach Claud some jazz changes and all of a sudden they will ascend to some kind of astral plane of musical greatness? I think you may be missing the point of what makes the band so special, and why people cling to them so tightly.
Teddy Reiser I wholeheartedly agree. They have groove and emotion with vocals and instruments. Being more technical would change the band for the worse. There are certain bands that are made to be technical. C&C just grooves and is great that way.
Josh talking about open handed drums and his dad being mad about his teacher for telling him to switch. I told my son to switch and i wish i didnt. He still rocks , but i should have let him go.
the only full albums I bought from coheed where Good apollo vol.1 and YOTBR. I only bought a few songs from the other albums. going to get both afterman albums soon.
Seeing josh all happy makes me happy \m/ he is the only drummer for coheed
+Adam Cardon Agreed, even though I think Chris is a more skilled player, the magic just wasn't the same without Josh. His personality permeates the music when he's in the band.
We will.always appreciate and love Chris but Josh is home
I mean Taylor Hawkins on No World was pretty damn cool. But since he wasn't touring with them...

watching this 10+ years later...its incredible to look back and see after another 4.5 albums later how much Coheed needed Josh Eppard to be Coheed.

big day out vibezzzzzz ✨✨
I've been supporting coheed since 2005 boy.
I love finding coheed shit ive never seen before.. 5 min in im transported back to high school 😂😂
Watching Coheed play mini golf is the most surreal thing I've ever seen

Or "the". I swear every time he starts a statement with "the" he says it 4 times.

Thats where my brother died. RIP. I went into coma and ended up winning the game.
