Definitely one of their best albums for sure imo. It's so well put together and different. One thing that I've said after many numerous listens, which you also pointed out, was that the guitar tracks kind of get lost in the mix. Not sure if that was intentional to let Josh and Zach shine through more because the drums and bass on this album are absolutely bonkers. Another thing was that Rise Nianasha was probably the single I didn't like as much as the others but after hearing it on the album with that glorious transition from Ladders it's something I look forward to every time now.

Great reaction! So cool you and I had the exact same feelings and thought process - being the second best album to Good Apollo IV vol 1. And I've been a fan for nearly 20 years.
I am still curious about its lasting power, but I think I've listened to the entire album 50 times or so (and listened to Shoulders once or twice a day for 8 months) and also saw them live a week ago. Now when I think, oh, let me put in Vaxis 1, I immediately think, nope, and play this one again.
Last note: I've seen 4 separate Coheed fan reaction channels rate this as their third best album, ever. I said second, but I think Claudio was super smart to change things up and reinvigorate their "real" fans.

"Discoheed and Cambria!" My dude, you nailed it. Disappearing Act and Love Murder One were jarring because of how unexpected they were, but fuck those two rule so goddamned much. Bad Man to a lesser extent, but still excellent. I love this fucking album.

Window of the Waking Mind brings me back to the first days of listening to Coheed and Cambria upon their release back when I was starting high school.
This song is beyond a musical as you say, it's truly artistic, and the demo version just proves that this song could have been released 30-40 years ago and would have been amazingly received.
The Liars Club is an amazing track as well.
If you want to see a hidden diamond, it's very niche but if your into post-hardcore and the related genres, check out Timmyhasheart's acoustic covers. He hasn't uploaded in years but they are the best acoustic covers I have ever heard in my life even to this day.
I can't recommend anything, because basically all his acoustic covers are done well.

Fun review video and I loved the editing. Also fun to see a fan listen to this album the first time. My favorites outside of the singles were A Disappearing Act, Bad Man, and Ladders.

Absolute BANGER of an album. I was in the same boat as you, I was worried after hearing the singles. But once Disappearing Act hit, it blew me awaaaaay. I think you put it perfectly: The singles are much better in context with the rest of the album. What a masterpiece, and I can't wait for part 3!

The title track at the end feels so much like Yoko Shimamura in the orchestration. I hear the outro to the song and I can just see Vaxis in his mindscape flying around like Sora in Kingdom Hearts

Something about this album is so satisfying for me in ways the previous few weren't. It's multifaceted. It's experimental and all the risks pay off, poppy but not "like" other modern pop, referential to other styles but not dominated by the reference. Storytelling and lyrics are the best they've done in years, and the album has no filler. It really feels like a big swing, and they knocked it out of the park.

I'm really glad seeing just how many people feel this way. Makes me feel less like this was just 'shiny new album' syndrome, and like this really is something special.

Claudio needs to write more songs with 8 strings, Love Murder One and Bad Man are poppy but still hit so hard because of the 8 string. That plus Claudio really pushing himself, doing different things with his vocals instead of the usual stuff he does, its so refreshing.

  • @chelfyn
    @chelfyn 2 роки тому +1

Best thing they've done in ages. Apparantly the closer was constructed from ideas Claudio had for a rock opera of A Picture of Dorian Grey, which explains a lot

THERE IT WAS! When you got to "Window of the Waking Mind" I was waiting to hear that word, "Musical". I was thinking the same thing after Vaxis draws the curtain and lyrics become a Narrator's dialogue.

Same. I will never forget driving through a forest while blasting 21:13 with my best Coheed bro.
But with this album, the saturated pop sing-along sound gets an unquestionable pass. It's done well, and fits a fresh story set in Claudio's universe.
Josh's drumwork and Travis' guitar licks overall kind of take a backseat (next album, please God please turn up Travis' guitar like in Good Apollo I & II...), and they can afford that with the old reliable plan of letting Claudio's voice make love to your ears, and showcasing Zach to remind you that bass guitar is the musician's safety blanket- so quit writing it off. 👌

Coheed & Cambria are a married couple from the Amory Wars comics Claudio & his wife Chondra produce, the music, all the albums except for TCBTS go along with books & comics & tell the story of what's happening in the Amory Wars through song.
Vaxis & his parents Nostrand & Nia are the characters we're following/concentrating on in this album & the last one.
