i prefer to use English to write/read, but i prefer to use Chinese to converse.
each language has its own advantages
example:
if u see English words, u know how to pronounce but dont know the meaning. if u see Chinese words, u dont know how to pronounce but u can guess the meaning
Overall, i think Chinese is a very beautiful language. its often more touching & moving than English for me, once u get beyond a certain standard n begin to truly understand the words individually, it becomes very enlightening. I achieved this standard only after leaving school (wasted, could have scored A1s instead of C6s)
give u an example
what is the meaning of this phrase? you can guess it
物 as seen also in 动物 (animals)
竞 as seen in 竞赛 (competition)
天 is nature
择 as seen in 选择 (choose)
so the first half means "In the nautral contest of living things"
适 as seen in 适合 (suitable)
者 meaning related things/people
生 is "alive"
存 is "survive"
2nd half means "only the suitable ones survive"
so the whole phrase describes "Survival of the fittest". But dont u think this phrase is very cool & compact & anyone reasonably understanding Chinese will be able to guess its meaning even seeing it for the 1st time?
how i improve my Chinese after school? read Chinese comics, listen to Chinese songs, watch Chinese movies, play Chinese games, watch Three Kingdoms, watch Chinese variety shows. And i picked up Traditional Chinese along the way :)
i can think of a relevant proverb in this CCB era
*Grand plans relies on Man, but Success relies on Heaven"
I'm really happy that you discovered your love for Chinese after school! You should totally go and retake your O levels, just for the sake of it :P
Do you have any chinese variety shows to recommend?
(Super Brain) , it has Chinese subs on top of speaking it, perfect way to improve ur Chinese. u can watch those 1v1 where they PK other countries

Unless u just emigrated, mandarin is not your mother tongue, dialect is. See how hk and Taiwan are working to preserve them while we suck up to learn some northerners dialect. With covid around every aisan country is distancing themselves from China so it's a good time to pick dialect up.
One of those rare moments i feel can finally blame the parents. I have family friends where the kids only speak english because their parents laughed at them when they were young, knocking their confidence. I was lucky, my parents are bilingual and taught me how to speak my mother tongue. They only laughed at me a little but they corrected, encouraged and guided me. Those parents who mocked their kids alot say to my parents you did well teaching your kids, our kids can only speak english... whats worse they say it in front of their kids... who end up saying well if you hadn't laughed at me all the time i would have been fluent too! Which is true i have memories of some aunts and uncles laughing at their kids when tried to speak their mother tongue as they would hear me speaking and would try by speaking to my parents.... only to be laughed at by their own parents... they would then revert back to english.
i’m malaysian and im happy there are more people out there that cant speak their own language like me.
I am Russia and barely speak Russian but I under most of the Russian
I'm a malay, still learning mandarin from a Taiwanese friend, when I speak to my Chinese friends in Malaysia, they said my Chinese is so bad.
Danial Adam jia you
That's what I meant by discouraging... Just keep trying to speak to them! Time to find better Chinese friends... haha
Aku cina but my malay friend say i melayu very good
But anyway, we have one thing in common, im half hokkien and half Cantonese too!! Just as u mentioned in d video, 2 dialects cant work simultaneously in a family conversation, i can only speak hokkien fluently, Cantonese wise, i manage to learn some through watching TVB hehe.... Fun fact abt my family : we speak mandarin with my parents but hokkien to our grandparents haha
U know what!! Dont be ashamed of speaking mixed language, bcs we are the ones too!! I speak mixed language all the time!! As long as people are comfortable with it, just speak la😂😂
I love the fact that u can easily change ur accent
Esther Lylianna Hehehe yes 😂 I do really bad European accents😂
I cracked at the japanese dude saying "ten-ten" while looking confused😂
JerTheMec HAHAHAHHAA. Yes he’s just trying his best 😂
u should see him on a 100 😂
one of the best japanese variety shows ever. They invented silent library too. Gaki no tsukai.
I can say in chinese tmtv is the best UA-camr
Jevin Dragon How ? Hahaha😂
Mother tongue = the first language that you learn when you are a baby, rather than a language learned at school or as an adult.
If they can't speak it, odds are it would mean it isn't their mother tongue. Growing up and speaking English at home would mean English is your mother tongue. Ethnicity does not equal to language used though lol.
Peranakans like myself, mix English, Malay and Hokkien together. It was uncommon to speak Chinese a lot during my Days. But then again it’s our identity which we should be proud of.
Yesss! Be proud of it! Peranakans are basically Chinese but so deep into the local straits culture, however if the effort and will is there I'm sure you can be really good at Chinese!
I’m from Hong Kong and I really enjoy watching your videos 🤣💪🏻👍🏻
Duo Jie la Dai Lou... Pardon my bad cantonese :p
I do have trouble learning my mother tongue language but like what you said as you grow older you start to reconnect with your roots. So this is a point which I could relate of. Thank you xx
Yes that is right :D I am trying to... All the best~ xx
Atmosphere is rly crucial for learning one kind of language! In mainland China, I have no chance to speak English, so when I went to a English-teaching university, v hard for me to adjust to all of the things. But I am grateful that in the university many ppl tolerate me and help me to improve my English.
Yessss, the environment around you. I'm sure when you are forced to speak and read, you will learn very fast... Because you'll need it for survival, just like you did! Congrats :)
Tropic Monsters TV Thank u for replying! I agree with u.
love your vids man, maybe you can do some gaming videos
Nice video,didnt expect this
sozoshi shonen ❤️
If u dont mind, we can do a language exchange too, tbh, i used to working in tuition class teaching Indians chinese, to top it all, im one of the big fans of ur channel!!!!
I love this video and everything you said is so true. So I guess I should be considered lucky lol cause I always spoke Cantonese to my grandmother and I learned Mandarin in school. But I didn't bother taking it seriously nor did I speak any Mandarin outside of school unless I had too. So when I went overseas and met loads of Hongkongers and Chinese my Cantonese and mandarin vocabulary improve a lot. Now when I do speak Chinese or Cantonese I don't used any English words in it. The last time I was back in Singapore. I heard a woman asking this teen something in Chinese and the fella replied in Chinese but filled with English words. I was like omg how can you not know even such simple words in Chinese. The best part is I'm not even Chinese but Eurasian. Keep up the good work Bro.
I managed to read everything you said! :D and yes, lucky there are some similarities with kanji and Chinese writing
Thats sad in fact many indonesian chinese cant speak their mother language. 32 years Suharto rezim force them to not speak chinese 😷
Yessss, I did not mention Indonesians, but Indonesian Chinese mostly speak just dialect, right?
@@Tropicmonsters right. Chinese in aceh and singkawang speak hakka, in medan speak medanese hokkian, riau and bagan siapi2 speak pure hokkian, pakam speak teochew, balikpapan maybe speak cantonese.
@@Tropicmonsters chinese in java dont bc we're close to the central government😷
please come out with your second video on this topic
My mother Malay, but when she was young she worked at Chinese kindergarten for 3 years
after a long time working there she was finally able to speak chinese
Now she has forgotten how to speak in Chinese,But she still understood what other Chinese were saying,
She can understand if the person is swearing or gossiping😂
My Mother Tongue is Malay, but i rarely spoke it because i speak English everyday and studying Japanese Language as my hobby.
diu lei ge lo mo ah Zai ahahhahah that absolutely killed me
HAHAHAHA, Sorry my cantonese v limited
I really like this video… 👍👍👍👍
Team TMTV!!!!!!
Yay Andrea!!!
WOOOO EARLY!!! ANGSTY AH BOI IS BACK
Fat Ballz 😁😁😁
it's really funny to see Singaporean saying that they should learn Chinese because it's their mother tongue while people know that Cantonese or Hokkien should be the real mother tongue instead of something their ancestors can't even understand.
I feel it's an absolute waste that some singaporeans cannot even string together a sentence in chinese.. you learn that shit in school and parents also speak it, its embarassing..
:( Well... I guess it'll be alright if they are good at English. Let me ask u a question, would you rather be average in both languages, or master at one?
"I dun wanna say wrong thing" speaks in malay accent
As my opinion people who cant speak their mother tongue.its so pathetic.
Thank god i can speak 3 languages except language and arabic
Good point. Chinese in Indonesia. Most of them dont really speaks dialects or Mandarin. What a shame
Really? I Thought they are good at dialect! I must be wrong... haha
For older people, they're good at dialect like Hokkien, most of Hokkien I think, but Now everybody should forget about our mother tongue After may 1998 history, so whatever race in here, we should speak Indonesian or our City's language.although that you wanne make a conversation with your own race, you still must using Indonesian/Official city's language and I can say that your comment is true because Now Indonesian Chinese dunno how to speak Mandarin because it's not allow th
Fella has to bring back his friend richie soon. That dude funny as
This video makes sense sia, also damn funny. LMAO
HAHAHA thanks bro

Why don't you post some of your videos to bilibili also? It's one of the biggest video-sharing platforms in China. I think people may be interested with ur videos. But u need to make sure those videos don't have some sensitive issues like Taiwan's belonging issues. Just a suggestion from a Chinese studying in US.
I’m from China and love your video. U r so cute.
I had a Chinese Malaysian who speaks broken Chinese broken english few malay words....how he communicates? 😅😭🤣
In my country mother languages simply disappeared, our tiny Chinese/Taiwanese muslim (China say they are not Chinese) community lost everything from language to culture in 2nd generation......same with Turkish,Malay,Indians,Indonesian etc
Which country are u from? Oh well... Have to make really extra effort to preserve language/culture in that case. Thanks for your comment!
@@Tropicmonsters western Saudi Arabia the majority are racial minorities who came for different reasons (Chinese/Central Asias escaped Communism) , the food is mix of every culture that immigrated to this area
Learning mother tongue is like learning a totally foreign language as most are already in 3rd and 4th generation, same about culture
Some old generation get panic from idea of searching for culture or mother language saying we are full Saudis.
They speak multiple dialect which is their true mother tongue

Its not called chinese. Its called mandarin. Mandarin is a language. Chinese is a race.
I was wondering when one of these comments would turn up. Chinese is the language as well... :D
Instead of only improving our mother tongue, we should also learn to speak other language.
The statements about malaysian Chinese have percentage of being banana is quite big. Probably not 1/4 of it.
First, half blood. Just like you said. When you have hokkien father and Cantonese mother. It didn't work-out. I also in this group but I still manage to learn it in formal school. Btw I'm half Thai and half Chinese.
Second, there is an old generation that didn't know Chinese. I notice in Malaysia. There is really Chinese community before British came. Sometimes we call them baba nyonya. There is long history behind that. But I put my grandma family in this group. Not because they are baba nyonya. My Grandma come from mainland when British taking them. The reason is my grandma learn at British school during that time. So her first language is English.
Third, this group lack of speaking Chinese because of their formal school. They still can speak Chinese but their knowledge vastly of what they talk at home. Most of them can't read or writing. A lot of 40s until 20s generation that neglect their school will have that kind of issue. The problem come when prc come to speak with them. I think I don't need to elaborate, you know the hussle.
In conclusion, they can speak their mother tongue fluently even if they don't go to school but if talk about mandarin proficiency. Not all really good at that. In Malaysia, I can see that mandarin is use as high class Chinese status in universities. The only place where I can see my friend speak mandarin fluently beside their dialect.
Wow Thai and Chinese even more difficult to pick up Chinese, good on ya for still learning to speak the language!
Please! Am i the only one who couldnt speak their own language here?
Some Chinese can't speak fluent Chinese, feel so Lao gui...
Hai ya...
yea... :( Is it our education system? Our society? Or up to the individual?
