1. Context Switch kills focus and productivity. Separate yourself from things that distract you. Examples include living with your family, errands, friends and useless college tasks. 2. Don't do the stuff you don't love. Varun is ruthless about saying no to things he does not want to do. 3. Be outcome-independent. Live life in a series of projects and don't care about the outcome or everyone's opinions. Productivity doesn't come without sacrifices. I'm going to have to rewatch this multiple times. GG
SMALL SUMMARY(BUT VIDEO IS MUST WATCH) 1. context switch-5-6 hour full on focus necessary , even a single distraction will now take you extra 30 min to focus again 2.donot do stuff you do not want to 3. being outcome independent- keeping way from log kya khaenge
He said- Don't do something that you don't love. The problem with this is people need to understand that passion is an outcome of action. He says- Degrees are not important. Don't fall into the trap. He's an intelligent guy who understands his work and especially human behavior. He's capitalizing on the insecurities of common students.
My view You really don't need degree, beacuse if college you have to do all by yourself. In degree assignments and exam preparation wastes our time. First of all they teach outdated syllabus Secondly they give shitty assignments Third exam tests our remembering ability they don't test our understanding or creativity College is just for socializing College is to get good friends and environment
Hii me 18 year old freelancer. Learned about freelancing from his book pyjama profit. I earn more than this @sauravAtri. He's probably a lecturer frightened to lose his career. 😁
I liked the line - at the end of the day, when you find what works for you, then you don't have to listen to anyone. 🔥🔥🔥 These days literally Everyone has something to advise you, some rules, some principles, do's and don'ts etc. This is really overwhelming .
1. Don't do context switching. Focus on one thing at a time. 2. Don't do things you don't love. 3. Be outcome-independent. Give your 100 percent. Don't care about the results.
One suggestion If you read Deep work by Cal Newport you can improve point 1 Then by reading Drive by Daniel H pink (I guess) you can improve point 2 Finally using atomic habits you can inculcate last habit
I feel like you will miss out on the emphasise that the video creator wants you to feel . Watching at 1.5x could be great for those listicle videos and clickbaity videos.
Why I relate to this vid so much? Crazy, how unknowingly I also zoneout from all the distractions when I am working on something until I finish it . I love coding, I love what I do. I rarely do something which I don’t like. Randomly this vid get into my recommendation, I needed this right now. Thank you Varun for putting this out! Much love ❤️
What an amazing and relatable story. I was genuinely facing this problem since few months but didn't know it's called "Context Switch"! Thank you so much for sharing this man ♥
Getting into the zone is also called "Flow". It can be expressed on graph that how once you are in the flow you become much more efficient at the task you are on
Context switch not only distracts you and makes you less productive it also makes your brain tired very soon. For instance, you can watch Joe Rogan for 3 straight hours and feel less tired than scrolling through Instagram posts for just 1 hour. Thanks, Varun this is an amazing video. You are not a motivational speaker, and I don't believe in motivation, but it feels good and encouraging whenever I watch you.
the Thing that thinking of the problem I Couldn't solve today before sleep actually works really well ,experiencing the same for a few weeks myself and as Soon as I wake up I am ready again to solve it
Makes full sence.. had a discussion with a fam member on this ..thanks for voicing it out.. For artists.. entrepreneurs.. creators.. the hyperfocus zone/ flow state is what we need ..to sit with problem.. to explore a medium and so on.. Context switch reallyyy does make is take a lot more breaks.. if triggered at an external pace.
Absolutely worth to have spent 15 minutes listening to this. Really love what you said at the end about finding your own way confidently and you don't have to follow anyone. Could you please suggest something for students who don't have a chance of moving out? How do you recommend we make a separate space?
Try to find a reading hall near you or you can move your desk at the roof(if you do not live in a society) or you can try to talk to more strangers. Hope it helps!
Building like minded connections in same city..hence having options not just our home at times.. finding spots and places where we can temporarily go and get ourselves to work..if it's on say..a laptop .. Zostels around. Might help🌟
Here's what I love about this video - I've been shamed by my family since a young age for obsessing over a hobby/skill. I'd obsess over it for a few weeks to months and leave it once I felt I finished my objective. My family would say on-loop "something is seriously wrong with you, how will you ever succeed in life like this", asking why I go into obsessive focus ignoring everything when I'm into something. This got so bad year after year that after a point I curbed my "obsessive hobby phases". A few still found their way out in college, but I've curbed at least half of my curiosities over the last 7 years due to a fear of being shamed, and I still feel that. It is immensely reassuring to now hear, at 22 years of age, that all that shame was bullshit. I always had a hunch that it was but I wasn't sure enough on this topic as a kid to stand my ground. I would argue I don't know how to learn a complex skill/subject I have an interest in with moderation. Even after I started making money, my family was like alright, respect, but why do you obsessively work on a project when you're into it and then crash and recover. "Keep balance, there's no point in working so much if you can't even eat and sleep on time. Is this how you will achieve success?" I know they're well-wishers, but misinformed and incorrect ones when it comes to this. This problem is solved with period separation from parents. Wish I knew this earlier, Gg :D If you're a kid who relates to this, this is the reassurance sign you wanted - There's nothing wrong with you. March forward into your interests💪🏻
Me, who spent 6-7 hours daily on debugging issue, I can agree to your points to some extent. But I would also recommend not taking breaks after longer focused thiking is not beneficial. Whenever we feel that we are not getting desired outcome from our hours of focused mode. We should take walk, or little nap, or any other relaxed activity such as playing with tennis ball. And while doing this activity you go in diffuse mode thinking and you would see something gets trigger and you get new ideas, new solutions, new steps to solve problem in your brain, at that point you should resume working. We should not discount our power of subconscious mind. This works 90% of the time. You can check out many scientists, artist you will find these things are common in them.☺️ Whoever is reading this comment, if this comment helps you let me know
gr8 stuff man. In the movie 'The social network' they talk about being wired in and i watched lex fridman's daily life rouitne where even he talks about not being distracted 4 some hours when he does work. Cant wait to try it especially now when i'm learning JS.
Damnnnn! This is actually so true and a tiny thing we haven't observed. I feel I can actually overcome this and increase my productivity 2x-3x times now! Insane! Thank you so much
It's just very true especially the context switch thing I mean that has been the major reason why I have been unproductive for the past 2 years and these 2 years I have been with my family and this unproductivity was not there while I was living in my pg room because literally nobody was there to distract me I was working
I feel the second point is a bit controversial because learning new things is hard and one will always hate it until one reaches in flow state in the new thing.
ho shit varun so relatable, I was in a confusion that weather I am in a right track or not but after seeing this I feel that I am on right path and this video has increased my confident too thanks man.
Hey varun The third advice hit really hard atleast in my case - " be outcome independent" maybe this is what i failed to understand and used to be worried about the outcome or expectation from myself, i also loved the way you using dual shade backgrounds or this monochrome feel, it really catches the attention !!
So relatable varun! This is one of the best video on productivity without any bullshit. Your content is so helpful and genuine btw Thanks for the guidance 🤍
The best part.... Seperation that is to live alone since early age.... I understand (surely got influenced by watching anime) but its damn true and effective 💪
Varun, you mention the things that you don't love, *but very often, especially when we have attained an reasonable amount of mastery at something, we require to give it more hours and very long feedback loops to it before something extraordinary or revolutionary comes out. In those high levels of mastery, one can work for months and years without getting any good results and in mundanity because of the long feedback loops, how do combat and get through these moments of long boring feedback loops?*
yeah totally agree. I am from a NIT and here we have 80% attendance rule like a school( I want to say wtf). Here we have to much things like assignments , classes. But can't do anything.

And to add up, Success doesn't come without productive times!

Thing which gave clearity rn to me is that focus on one thing at a time.
