In Defence of Brother Bear

- Brother Bear. A classic film. A true classic. But it doesn't get the love that it deserves. It made money, audiences like it. But critics seem to hate it. And so his got me rather tilted, and decided that I have to defend my childhood nostalgia. Once again. The critics are wrong. Here's why.

I don't care what critics say about Brother Bear; I love it with a passion. Sure it has flaws and it ain't no perfect masterpiece of animation. But I will say it is a very good movie that is fun and enjoyable to watch.
Same here brother bear is so good the critics don’t know what they’re talking about
Agreed
Brother Bear is my favorite Disney movie of all time. I can watch this movie a million times and never get bored. Its animation is stunning, the songs are unforgettable, and the tale is amazing and heartfelt. This film is just as magical as other Disney films with higher ratings. The excellent soundtrack. The symphonic music is wonderful, and Phil Colins' songs are every bit as catchy, joyful, and memorable as those he wrote for Tarzan. The picture also contains a touching tale that focuses on Kenai and Koda's relationship, as well as a beautiful moral. There is also a lot of symbolism that has been extremely skillfully employed in the plot. Phil Colin’s went absolutely hard with these soundtracks. This movie is an emotional roller coaster of intellect, wit, pure heart, and morals. It takes you on an incredible soul-searching trip. It's a visual feast, epic, and breathtaking. The vividness of the colors and brush strokes transports you on a beautiful captivating voyage that will leave you speechless with its magnificence. So, yeah, the movie is fantastic! This film needs more recognition. People can say anything they want about this film, but I know it was outstanding!
All without, i dont think its stereotyping bad either. And its really good, has a soul and damn the story about grief, being part of life and , restorative justice by having him take care about the kid of the mom whom he killed. And become a , reconciling.
Its really masterful and emotional. And i dont care the younger bit is annoying, like yeah kid. Its one of the best disney movies for sure. And dang the music hasnt to hide. And damn the spitit mountin clamax ids so good, it shows, excalating, how koda had someone to help him grow better, hw his brozthe rgot worse and hs his brothers spiriot resolves and gives closure to that and give everyone perspective.
I dont understand how this Film is not loved around the globe. It has everything, the Story, the Charakters, the feelings, the beautiful scenery, the music!
The Transformation Song is sung in the Inuit language, such a great detail!
This Film is so beautiful, in all regards!
If there was only one Film i could recomend to every person on earth, regardless of gender, age or culture, its this one. ❤
I'm just gonna copy paste a response I gave to somoeone down the line n.n' sorry! but I do remember the reception around this movie quite a bit! :O
"Actually one of the biggest criticisms was that they became animals instead of keeping them as humans and disneys track record of turning bron people into animals instead of being brave enough to have a full movie with darker faces.
Now and then considering they're to make a fable or fantasy based or inspired on certain cultures, a lot of time indigenous american stories did involve a lot of animal transformation, not all but a heck of a lot of 'em. I didn't hear angry people in regards to it's positive message, but a complete dissmisal and just dissapointment of the story like people wanted more and wanted more humans.
Like people felt like this movie was like a bad lion king in a way, and I do remember people being annoyed at the moose, which I just don't get."
Another beautiful thing about this is it respects the culture behind the story it’s telling, I’ve seen a lot of people of this culture praise this for being very much like some of their legends.
Brother Bear is one of my favorite movies!!
The amount of thought that went into this movie always amazes me!
At the beginning of the movie, when Kenai is a human, the screen is cut and the colors look faded, but when he turns into a bear the screen get expanding and the colors looks more alive.
OMG I didn't even notice the screen changing. This movie rocks.
Brother Bear is a better 80th anniversary movie from Disney than wish the 100th anniversary ever was
One of my favorite movies. Beautiful animation. Great message. Underrated movie.
(Spoiler)
I ALWAYS cry at the little reunions at the end, especially when we see Koda with his mom.
the songs in this movie are great songs on my way and great spirits i tend to come back to them once in a while
I remember watching Brother Bear 2 first when I was younger and being a bit confused at the start but fully enjoying it. And only sometime in the last few years watching the first one and thoroughly enjoying it as well. They're good movies, I don't care what anybody says.
This movie is so amazing, the themes: toxic masculinity, the importance of loving everyone, how humans can be the bad guys to other animals, taking responsibility for your actions etc....
It is all amazing and the visuals are stunning
I don't really get why it was so badly received unless the critics were all "alpha males bros" or something like that
Actually one of the biggest criticisms was that they became animals instead of keeping them as humans and disneys track record of turning bron people into animals instead of being brave enough to have a full movie with darker faces.

Like people felt like this movie was like a bad lion king in a way, and I do remember people being annoyed at the moose, which I just don't get.
Another underrated classic! I remember seeing this movie many times and having its sequel on DVD.
I thought this was/is a wonderful film! I thought the message was good, I thought the characters were good, the artwork wa GORGEOUS, and they were respectful of the indigenous people. I enjoyed the songs, the pace was good, it was glorious 2D animation, my favorite form of animation, and...I can't think of a single thing wrong with it.
The journey of the brothers and the love they clearly had for each other was palpable. And the plot twist about Koda's mother and how he reacted when he learned what Kenai had done, the devastation in his little face was heartbreaking. Sitka's death still gets me, even today. Denahi's emotional turmoil was believable and painful. It was just wonderful and deserved more.
I also liked a little thing they did with the visual scope of the film where it started in a narrow aspect ratio, but when Kenai became a bear, the ratio changed to widescreen. It was symbolic of the character's eyes being opened to seeing more and seeing things through another's eyes. There was so much to like about this that it is no small claim to say that it was unreservedly underrated. ❤
At the ending when you said you miss the old 2D style movies. I feel that too. Mostly perhaps of nostalgia as though I was born in the 2000s, I saw mostly 2D movies.
This is one of my favorite movies, and it makes me sad to see how many people don’t actually like it much because of the jokes after he turns into a bear. But I feel like those people are missing the point of the story, the journey itself. I love the visuals, the story, the music and I’m glad to see it still holds a special place in people’s hearts.
Also Rutt and Tuke get way too much hate they’re just vibing. 😂
this movie was my childhood ive rewatched it so many times then i forgot about it for years
The movie meant a lot to me when it came out - its story surprised me, and very few Disney movies since have done that. More than that, at the time I was glad to see a movie where male compassion resolves the story instead of male aggression, where being a man could mean something other than being the fighter. As much as everyone rightly praises Frozen and Moana for their strong female heroes, I think Brother Bear deserves just as much praise for redefining masculinity.
Definitely underrated. I don't think it is a great movie, but it is a good movie with great parts. It's really emotionally heavy too, like the building tension around the bear cub's mom is great and heartwrenching. Imagine having to tell your best friend that you killed their mom, damn.
This was my fav movie as a kid
I love this movie. I'm a big sister to a younger brother, but even I got something out of this. At the time it released our mum was diagnosed with cancer so I had to watch out for my brother.
I loved this movie as a kid! And so did my grandmother. I have these wonderful memories, of how we sat together and watched them every winter. (I don't know, why we only watched the movie in winter. Mabey because it takes place during an ice age?)
What do you think of Kenai's face in the thumbnail?
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid
Schaffrillas was DEAD WRONG about this movie, and seeing him hate on it unfairly honestly pissed me off. And I say that as someone who generally likes his videos.
I've always loved this film!😍😍 I actually saw the second one before, because our children's channel kinda didn't have the right to show the actual Disney classics, and when I finally got to see Brother Bear 1, the film that started it all, I was so hyped, and the scene on the mountain at the end, when Kenai gets transformed into a human again??? Urgh, so beautiful, stunning, and the muuussiiiiiic!!! But my favourite part is how they handled Kenai telling Koda about his mother's death. I wanna cry just thinking about it.
i love this movie! and agree on all accounts. i live in the pacific northwest and the backgrounds of the film are stunning and a highly realistic representation of what this area looks like. Did you know the transformation sequence music is sung in a native language? the lyrics are really good, and it sounds amazing
it’s like looking up at the stars for the first time and getting chills.
so good
There's a comment here that mentions that the song was sung in Saami rather than Indigenous North America.
I've come to believe we need to stop listening to critics so much and think for ourselves especially when their wrong try to make people feel like shit for liking something they don't
Brother Bear is my favourite Disney movie! It was released the same year I was born so I truly grew up with this movie. It's just so beautiful, and I love that after Kenai get's turned into a bear everything becomes MORE beautiful. And the soundtrack is absolutely perfect in every way.
This is one of my top 5 favorite Disney movies, it’s glad that people are finally realizing that this movie is good
I didn’t need convincing because I already knew this movie was a masterpiece. It is a piece of art, truly one of the most beautiful movies visually
This is by far one of my favorite Disney movies. The story hits home every time for me. It never got the attention that many other movies of its time did, but I adore it. I feel like others have covered what I would want to say, so...
Shout out to the bonus features on its DVD release. They taught me about what the heck voice acting and foley was. And the bone puzzle game was actually fun too! And the moose director's commentary on the film was quite funny.
I definitely miss the 2D animation style too! There’s something special and almost magical about it that can’t quite be captured in 3D.
Also love when films today mix the mediums to make something really creative
It's nice hearing a review about this movie that's all positive. Most of the criticisms I hear are pretty nitpicky. The story is beautiful and told well and you can tell they put in the effort, but not just the type of effort meant to show off all the bells and whistles they've figured out how to do, but not lazy. Well crafted. It's a well crafted homesome tender film with a beautiful story and message.
I cried at the funeral scene and when you see sitka and coda's mother in the end
I love this movie with all my heart! It always gives me chills and tears when I watch it. Im so glad you reviewed it
It's not one of my favourites but it really is an amazing watch for young and old and I understand why you love it as much as my mother adores this movie. Speaking of, she cried when I bought her this movie for her birthday, and that's gotta mean something.
I love this movie, I don’t get the hate
Brother bear is a childhood favourite absolutely love it very underappreciated at the time of its release the critics dont know what their talking about it's so good definitely deserves way more love this film is an example of how great traditional animation was i do really miss feature film 2d animated films I love 3d films but there's just something about 2d that hits different fingers crossed we get 2d animation projects from disney in the future
YESSS Brother Bear!!! This movie always gives me CHILLS whenever I see it. The score always moves me to tears, the dialogue and character dynamics are realistic. Easily one of my favorite movies of all time
I adore Brother Bear! Its one of my favourite Disney films and it hurts to see how little attention it gets. I wish I could have seen it in cinemas. Oh and Look Through My Eyes? That song rocks!
Honestly I would've prefered it as an epic musical, keeping Kenai human and focusing on his bond with his brothers.
I love the depiction of native Americans in movie
As someone who also loves this film, thank you so much for explaining why it’s great!
Its a great movie, that also i dont think is offensive stereotyped , and its heartfelt, and good. Its great. It even has that sweet bit dark mature themes.Loss grief, . perspectives, its great.
Violencw, cycles tagedies all that .
Tell everybody im on my way is a wonderful song in the movie
Brother Bear and Home On The Range deserve far more praise!
Home on the Range is a guilty pleasure but I don't know about praise.
I remember liking Brother Bear a lot when I was a kid though I admit I don't feel like rewatching it much. I liked that it explored relationships between brothers since those weren't explored in Disney movies much. (Sort of like how people enjoyed the way Frozen and Lilo & Stitch explored relationships between sisters.)
as a 29 year old to miss the early 2000 for sure disney had some great moments like in thier movies and tv series animated and live action some of the series like kim possible and suite life on deck i for sure miss the period and some of the movies bambi 2 the little mermaid return to the sea really like those movies
As a Child I thought everybody love this Film, the I Shaw the critics 😭
Ugh. This movie is def one of my favorites. Tied with the little mermaid i think. It's just so cute, wholesome, sad, ugh, i just love it 💕💕💕
Without a doubt, if someone asked me what my favorite Disney movie is, I'd say Brother Bear.
Love this movie so much I named my dog Kenai after the film.
Am I the only one who think the best era of dinsey was the 2000’s
Wow I never thought about it especially since it's so often said to be the worst but the 2000's has so many great movies. I love Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Emperor's new groove, Brother Bear and my favourite movie as a kid Lilo and Stitch.
@@linnilake I call it the best because it is the most interesting to talk about every other era as a theme to it but the 2000’s does not
I was a kid when these came out, so they hold a special place in my heart
@@haydenberends3905ah ok
@@haydenberends3905 true it is a era that nobody talk about except me
My favorite part of this movie at least in terms of humor was Kenai’s reaction to his transformation I mean the guys horrified who wouldn’t be but the way it’s presented makes it impossible not to laugh
I mean they are possibly there to not go into kafka transformation horror XD its a disney movie after all, it implies rather than, going explicit there. and he needed to have someone to make him snap out of it, so, yeah well done comic relief to not go to even darker genre.
I like Brother Bear this is a underrated animated film, I do enjoy Phil Collin’s music for these movies (I know infamously Nostalgia Critic hates them to the bone) also there was a deleted scene with Kenai talking to Koda without a song just straight up.
Also watch this movie again but with the Moose commentary; it is hilariously funny.
I have not cared about critics, they represent what they think and thanks to the Academy, back then they seemed to be a hive mind, and still does in the bigger end.
I remember the toys I had the bear one
I love Brother Bear!!!!
You know I wouldn't mind if Disney made another movie about brothers because if you kind of think about it. Disney has has a long history with Making two movies, but mostly focusing on the sister relationship Lilo and Stitch and Frozen
I love this movie.💜
I like chicken little. I had one brother bear McDonald's toy. If the movie gets a live adaptation will we got the moose voice by Seth Rogen? 😆
My favorite animated movie second to Spirit.
If anything, I like Brother Bear 1 & 2 more than the plenty of lies in Pocohantas 1 & 2.
🎶TELL EVERYONE IM ON MY WAY, NEW FRIENDS AND NEW PLACES TO SEEEEEEE, WITH BLUE SKIES AHEAD, YES IM ON MY WAY, AND THERES NO PLACE ID RATHER BE🎶🎵🎶
Back when Disney was naturally and organically diverse too and their characters were accurately represented and colored.
The beginning of this movie is absolutely beautiful and the ending to this movie is absolutely amazing. Everything else in the middle sucks. Still has a better soundtrack than Frozen or half of the other movies nowadays.
I really love Brother bear. I wish they would give us a serie or an other movie or something just like lion king had. Its such a good story with such awesome characters. I need more. I mean how can you say no against KODA! That little cutie deserves the world!
There is a sequel actually.
Yes, let us, the viewing public, make up our own minds as to whether or not we like a movie!
Brother bear such a good movie. I grew up with it, mostly forgot about it, and then came back to it with an adult perspective and dang is it amazing.
I think a lot of the reasons the critics disliked. It was stupid political stuff that was stupid. Things like throwing a temper tantrum about what people did the music because they weren’t indigenous. And they were really mad that there were musical instruments used other than drums, because the indigenous people that the movie was about only had drums. Phil Collins said that the movie wasn’t for indigenous people from this time., And if it was, he still wouldn’t use only drums because he would’ve wanted to show them the cool music that he could make
I remember the Brother Bear McDonald’s toys, I had the Denahi toy
I do still enjoy the sequel and it's flaws, but the this one is way way better
Yes giggles
Will you review other dreamworks movies like Ruby Gillman or Trolls?
Will you check out the amazing digital circus?
How many critics evaluate the cultural aspects of the film?
Will you review the Prince of Egypt please? 👏👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏
The little girl looks like Lilo 8:07
Hopefully this is one movie that won’t get a live action remake.
Idc about the critics. Its my favorite Disney movie.
I think critics are people who want everything to be 100% and view anything less than that as garbage.
I actually like the songs that Phil Collins wrote for this movie better than the songs he wrote for Disney's Tarzan even though that soundtrack seems to be relatively more popular.
Can you please do a video about PBS Kids shows?
nice video
I could talk about the 2000’s for a long time if you talked to be
People hated this film?
I am more mixed about this film
Yes.🙁
Unfortunately, yes. But I LOVE the film. As Stitch would say, "This movie has flaws, but it is still good. Yep, still good."
@@GangsterGamer9613 I like the film but I think the total tonel shift is kind of jaring but I still like this film like most of the Disney 2000’s era that is why I am my favorite era
Why? the sequel, i get it, but that had even a very satisfying climax of it all coming together and closure. And its very emotional, that grief and anger is really felt.
As a white person, it’s not for me or any other white person to decide whether this film is a good accurate representation of indigenous people. That is for actual indigenous folks to have their say. I will say this film does fall once again into the “POC transforms into an animal for the majority of the film” trap. That’s not “nitpicking” that’s just fact.
There are some good moving scenes in this film, I will give it that. But if the minority group this film was aimed at doesn’t care for this film or some of the choices it made, it’s not the time for us as white people to say “no it’s good actually!”
5:41 oh sorry. Onion ring?
It’s not perfect. The cultural aspects are a little wonky (that song during Kenai’s transformation is sung in Saami rather than an Indigenous North American style) and it falls into the trap of “person of colour main character turns into an animal”. But this was one of my favourite movies as a kid, and it still kind of is today. The message about masculinity and how it relates to love is great, and the music is very nostalgic for me. “No Way Out” never fails to make me cry because it’s just so heartbreaking
This is the only fair breakdown of the weakness of strengths of the film I’ve seen in these comments, thank you
When you describe it, it sounds good in theory but something about the execution is just kind of boring? Like I can't really pin point why but I never really liked this movie apart from the set up.
I never understood why this movie got such a bad rep. It's damn awesome!
"Koda is such an annoying kid" Kids are annoying. Being a parent/older sibling makes you realize this. Koda is just being a kid, and he just lost the one parent he had.
"The moose are so unnecessary and overused" They're better than the gargoyles and I find them funny.
"The story is too cliché" saying a story is cliché is like saying you breathe oxygen. No duh a movie is going to feel cliché when you're older and have seen way more movies than the kids watching this for the first time.
"It's cultural appropriation" did you watch the same movie as me????? I think you may have accidentally put on Pocahontas instead. AT LEAST NATIVES HELPED CREATE THIS MOVIE.
Every criticism thrown at this movie just boils down to cynicism.
I've heard someone mention that it falls into the colored person spending the majority of the film in an animal form trope, alongside "The Emperor's New Groove," "The Princess and The Frog," and "Soul."
I am thinking will there be ever a in defense of wish video???
And not comparing these two, Brother bear 1 is waaaaaayyy better. But am just wondering if something what is consindered a black sheap now can later be a god thing
He did actually make a video about "Wish," after the release.
@@ThePrincessCH Yeah i just mean more like a trend.
I decided to follow critic reviews once and for a straight week my nightly movie was a 100% critic score movie.
What I witnessed:
Main characters who were just awful people. Like, "I held my inconvenient baby down in the bathtub until they almost drowned and never repaired my relarionship with them as part of my character growth" awful.
Actual live birth of cows, sheep and goats, no special effects. Sometimes the young were stillborn. Real dead body. I don't want to know how they planned it.
Penis.
A head being split open like a watermelon.
A very visual depiction of a minor experiencing something really bad and physical, with an actual minor as the actress.
Critics are awful. They have emotion left, discomfort, and call any movie that can arise this feeling in their shameless minds, a masterpiece. Never let critic consensus drive you, they are horrid people. Never let public consensus drive you, the bulk of reviews are targeted troll or bot attacks either in favour of or against it.
Brother Bear's better than Lilo & Stitch, in my opinion.
Am I wrong for thinking that Kenai looked better as a bear?
Antagonist Danahi was so fun to watch. He was pretty scary every time he showed up on screen while tracking down his bear brother. Also yeah Sidka was an absolute badass. He swung his spear around with such ferocity and speed just like Darth Maul and his double bladed lightsaber. Brother Bear is awesome, I don’t care what anyone says. I loved it as a kid and I still love it now. Even though it wasn’t as good as the original I even enjoyed the sequel.
