I completely agree with everything you just said, particularly about his lyrics. He wrote lyrics that really tugged at the heart. Also, this song is an example of when a string arrangement actually (at least in my opinion) add to the emotions the song is trying to convey. I've often found that certain songs by popular artists end up having a string arrangement that I've thought were completely unnecessary, and that therefore took away from the listening experience. This particular song, however, is an example of strings being completely essential to the track.

Always loved this song - as a kid I remember how the phrases "castle dark" and "fortress strong" could send a shiver up my spine where "dark castle" or "strong fortress" would not. Poetry v prose. As I got older, I better understood the part about the paperback novels - I read my share of "Harlequin romances" - and to me the song became more of a cautionary tale - beware of casting your partner in the role of the romantic hero; if you do, you'll miss who they really are - they'll become a ghost you can't see.

I was around 11 when this came out so I’ve heard it many times but it’s only been in the last ten or so years that I’ve come to appreciate what a beautiful song it is and it’s one of my favourites now.

I grew up listening to this track, Sundown and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald but I wasn't exposed to more of his music because mainstream radio only played these. I have enjoyed discovering more of his catalog via Pandora as well as UA-cam. I have gone back to review catalogs of artists like Van Morrison as well. Even though I have listened to these artists for 40 years and I thought I knew what they had to offer, I am discovering how much I haven't heard. I have always been a huge Elvis fan and thought I had heard all of his songs, I have discovered differently. He performed over 700 hundred songs and though I watched every movie and had several albums, that didn't even scratch the surface. I have enjoyed watching people from every age group react to the songs I have spent a lifetime loving. Music is the common denominator that has the ability to bring all ages together regardless of race, gender or ethnicity. So thanks for keeping the music alive. I have always tried to teach my kids but I loved blowing my 15 year old sons mind by introducing him to The Animals, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and essentially gave him an evolution of music in 30 songs. I started with Robert Johnson and moved on from there. @dicondissectionalreactions It will be your generations responsibility to pass it along. Daniel, as you heard this song, I could see the pain on your face. From verse to verse and then the chorus with chains on his feet, the feelings lost and just can't get it back. In the golden era of the singer-songwriter ('60s and '70s) Gordon Lightfoot was one of the very best. He's one of Canada's national treasures, along with Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Judy Collins and a number of others. The albums he recorded in the early '70s are his best material, IMO.
This song sounds like some type of closure as I can feel the pain in his voice,not only this but he also seems to be looking back as he is not able to understand what went wrong.

Canadian here and a fan of Lightfoot since the 1960s. This was one of his softer, more radio-friendly US hits. You ought to try his Canadian Railroad Trilogy next. He wrote it in less than a week on commission from the CBC (Canada's public broadcaster) for Canada's centennial in 1967. Other good ones include Sit Down Young Stranger, Song For a Winter's Night, and Early Morning Rain.
Haven't heard this for a few years but it still gives me chills as it always did. There is nothing extra in his songs So pure. And Gordon's rhymes are so perfect & so effortless.

IT was 1970 and as a ten year old kid I repeatedly listened to Gordon Lightfoot. Grest storyteller and artist. His music was his art. You could follow what he was singing and describing at the same time. 61 years old and still bask in the warmth of his voice.
I'm sorry for your profound losses. I heard him sing this my first-year university at a concert in 1971. It reflected my deep depression. I quit uni the next fall. It brings back the memory and pain of an undiluted solution of a heart drowning in heartache. It's just as beautiful as it is pain-filled. Such is life: beauty and pain. Walk on.
Gordon has a couple hundred memorable songs. One of the greatest tunesmiths of our time. Every one of his albums has a few classics on it. SHADOWS from around 1980 is a brilliant album. And Gordon is one of those rare writers whose lyrics are as good as his music. Nick De Caro did the string arrangements -- brilliant as always. And as I'm sure many have noted, Whitney Houston's hit "The Greatest Love of All" ripped this one off. How anyone let that slip by I don't know given the fame of Gordon's song.

Back when this was a new song, I was a young kid, but it affected me enough that I remember drawing quite an elaborate picture of the ghost chained up in the castle...I ended up taking up singing as a hobby, and as it happens I sound rather like Lightfoot and can imitate him. Have sung this many times at karaoke...and when I do I usually still remember drawing that picture as a kid.

There was this tiny bar on Central at Chataqua in Wichita, Kansas called 'The Embers'... I remember walking by before I could go in and I heard this song. I remember it clearly because I had recently had a break with the love of my life... I was 16... when I turned 17 I signed a contract with the US army national guard and went away for training. When I came home, I walked into the Embers and became a customer. And after I got a beer, I went to the juke box and played this song... and then I played 'Lay Lady Lay'.... by Bob Dylan... try those back to back.... Its a mind blower. So many funny stories I could tell about the Embers...

I think this is the first Gordon Lightfoot song I ever heard & I became a fan immediately. Another favorite of mine by Gordon Lightfoot is called "Your Love's Return (Song for Stephen Foster)" off the "Sit Down Young Stranger" album. Lovely, lovely musical arrangements in the song.
I saw him live in concert in the 80's, doing an acoustic set in a small club. He was amazing. That voice is so distinctive. No one sounds like him. I know you have listened to The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon, but if you want to go a step further down the rabbit hole, "Beautiful" should be the next one you listen to. Great reaction.
I have heard this song ++ many times. I have seen him many times sing this in his annual visits to Massey Hall, in Toronto. This song has always touched me, but I think that for today, your reaction touched me even more. I got the feeling that it was an emotional gut punch that captured something that might have been going on in your life. Another great folk singer is Ralph McTell . Streets of London off a rare album Ralph McTell Live (at 41:43) is amazing! The audience singing the chorus with him is better than a choir! So happy you have discovered and appreciate Gord. (Lightfoot used to play an annual 7 to 10 day residency every November at Toronto's Massey Hall, famed for its acoustics. It would sell out in hours. The combination of his guitar playing and his golden voice could make the most hardened heart break. There were few dry eyes after one of his shows. Lots of tears of joy too, though.) I don’t plan to have a gravestone, but if I did it would have the epitaph “Carefree Highway, Let Me Slip Away On You”.

I grew up listening to this track, Sundown and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald but I wasn't exposed to more of his music because mainstream radio only played these. I have enjoyed discovering more of his catalog via Pandora as well as UA-cam. I have gone back to review catalogs of artists like Van Morrison as well. Even though I have listened to these artists for 40 years and I thought I knew what they had to offer, I am discovering how much I haven't heard. I have always been a huge Elvis fan and thought I had heard all of his songs, I have discovered differently. He performed over 700 hundred songs and though I watched every movie and had several albums, that didn't even scratch the surface.
I have enjoyed watching people from every age group react to the songs I have spent a lifetime loving. Music is the common denominator that has the ability to bring all ages together regardless of race, gender or ethnicity. So thanks for keeping the music alive. I have always tried to teach my kids but I loved blowing my 15 year old sons mind by introducing him to The Animals, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and essentially gave him an evolution of music in 30 songs. I started with Robert Johnson and moved on from there.

Daniel, as you heard this song, I could see the pain on your face. From verse to verse and then the chorus with chains on his feet, the feelings lost and just can't get it back. That loss brought tears to my eyes. You have that same reaction to this. So glad that you had the opportunity to hear song. It was one of Gordon's famous songs.

In the golden era of the singer-songwriter ('60s and '70s) Gordon Lightfoot was one of the very best. He's one of Canada's national treasures, along with Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Judy Collins and a number of others. The albums he recorded in the early '70s are his best material, IMO.
"Beautiful" is another masterpiece. After listening to Gordo for over 50 years I still get goosebumps. Best songwriter in history imo.

This song sounds like some type of closure as I can feel the pain in his voice,not only this but he also seems to be looking back as he is not able to understand what went wrong.
You listened to one of the most perfect songs and arrangements ever written. Gord was greatly admired by songwriters from Dylan to Buffett. The second guitar fills are just sublime. The strings never intrude, but enhance the experience. Many claim he never wrote a bad song.
He wrote this song after his third divorce. The man is simply amazing with his words and there has never and will never be a song writer like him.

Canadian here and a fan of Lightfoot since the 1960s. This was one of his softer, more radio-friendly US hits. You ought to try his Canadian Railroad Trilogy next. He wrote it in less than a week on commission from the CBC (Canada's public broadcaster) for Canada's centennial in 1967. Other good ones include Sit Down Young Stranger, Song For a Winter's Night, and Early Morning Rain.

IT was 1970 and as a ten year old kid I repeatedly listened to Gordon Lightfoot. Grest storyteller and artist. His music was his art. You could follow what he was singing and describing at the same time. 61 years old and still bask in the warmth of his voice.
I'm sorry for your profound losses. I heard him sing this my first-year university at a concert in 1971. It reflected my deep depression. I quit uni the next fall. It brings back the memory and pain of an undiluted solution of a heart drowning in heartache. It's just as beautiful as it is pain-filled. Such is life: beauty and pain. Walk on.
Gordon has a couple hundred memorable songs. One of the greatest tunesmiths of our time. Every one of his albums has a few classics on it. SHADOWS from around 1980 is a brilliant album. And Gordon is one of those rare writers whose lyrics are as good as his music. Nick De Caro did the string arrangements -- brilliant as always. And as I'm sure many have noted, Whitney Houston's hit "The Greatest Love of All" ripped this one off. How anyone let that slip by I don't know given the fame of Gordon's song.

Gordon Lightfoot. Canadian icon. Back when this was a new song, I was a young kid, but it affected me enough that I remember drawing quite an elaborate picture of the ghost chained up in the castle...I ended up taking up singing as a hobby, and as it happens I sound rather like Lightfoot and can imitate him. Have sung this many times at karaoke...and when I do I usually still remember drawing that picture as a kid.

This is something I gotta see. 3 other classic songs by Gordon are Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Sundown and Carefree Highway.

There was this tiny bar on Central at Chataqua in Wichita, Kansas called 'The Embers'... I remember walking by before I could go in and I heard this song. I remember it clearly because I had recently had a break with the love of my life... I was 16... when I turned 17 I signed a contract with the US army national guard and went away for training. When I came home, I walked into the Embers and became a customer. And after I got a beer, I went to the juke box and played this song... and then I played 'Lay Lady Lay'.... by Bob Dylan... try those back to back.... Its a mind blower. So many funny stories I could tell about the Embers...

I think this is the first Gordon Lightfoot song I ever heard & I became a fan immediately. Another favorite of mine by Gordon Lightfoot is called "Your Love's Return (Song for Stephen Foster)" off the "Sit Down Young Stranger" album. Lovely, lovely musical arrangements in the song.
I saw him live in concert in the 80's, doing an acoustic set in a small club. He was amazing. That voice is so distinctive. No one sounds like him. I know you have listened to The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon, but if you want to go a step further down the rabbit hole, "Beautiful" should be the next one you listen to. Great reaction.
I have heard this song ++ many times. I have seen him many times sing this in his annual visits to Massey Hall, in Toronto. This song has always touched me, but I think that for today, your reaction touched me even more. I got the feeling that it was an emotional gut punch that captured something that might have been going on in your life. Another great folk singer is Ralph McTell . Streets of London off a rare album Ralph McTell Live (at 41:43) is amazing! The audience singing the chorus with him is better than a choir! Like Gordon he is a masterful lyricist and storyteller. Thanks for reacting to ALL music genres a true music appreciation course.

So happy you have discovered and appreciate Gord. (Lightfoot used to play an annual 7 to 10 day residency every November at Toronto's Massey Hall, famed for its acoustics. It would sell out in hours. The combination of his guitar playing and his golden voice could make the most hardened heart break. There were few dry eyes after one of his shows. Lots of tears of joy too, though.) Oh, and Bonne Année! Happy New Year!
