"I am not in love
But I'm open to persuasion" that's how it always starts
What a great opening line.
Lol
Nailed it Judy.................................fucking nailed it.
My Father owned several of her albums, when I was 14, in the 1970’s her music was played in our house mostly in the evening. ❤❤ Makes me weepy. My Dad adored Joan’s music.
Thank you, Daniel.
Great reaction.
Bless you and your memories Jae........................your dad had great taste. Joan is a colossus.
Daniel, thanks so much for giving Joan Armatrading a chance. This song gives just a hint at her wide vocal range, she's also an excellent guitarist. My approach for artists new to me is to listen to a compilation and if I like it to dive deeper into their catalog. Joan has a lot of compilations, I happened to pick the A&M "Greatest Hits" which has 19 songs, all of which are worth hearing. 'Drop the Pilot' is a more upbeat and catchy pop song, her 2nd most popular I think. Others: Cool Blue Stole My Heart, The Weakness in Me, Rosie, Down to Zero, Willow, Me Myself I, (I Love It When You) Call Me Names, All the Way from America.
"If I can feel the sun in my eyes and the rain on my face, why can't I feel...love?" Memorable line
Oh my! Then the two chord changes!
"I am not in love, but I'm open to persuasion." One of the best opening lines EVER! Fantastic artist and glorious singer/songwriter/guitarist that relatively few people know about. Next song by Joan Armatrading you should listen to is Down to Zero. Totally unique structure and astounding voice!
My fav"The weakness in me. I believe it touches a universal chord.
1st! Yes! Joan! "Willow', "Show Some Emotion" are good next steps for more Joan.
She has so many different sounds: Show Some Emotion (Jazzy), The Weakness in Me (singer song writer ballad), Simon (reggae), Me Myself I (rock), All the Way From America (cinematic). Feel free to add to this list.
Much appreciate that you listened to Joan, her first album is classic. In the States she is a deep cut unfortunately, but music lovers know her. She was unique on FM radio in the mid-70's, I bought her album then and still listen to it.
"The weakness in me" may be her best song ever. it always brings a tear to my eye
Joan was more well known in Europe than in the US. I had the good fortune to see her live 3 times and she did not disappoint. The band was always tight and her voice was smooth and stellar. I agree that she is a highly under rated artist in the US. If you're interested in hearing more, I'd suggest The Weakness in Me, Show Some Emotion and Drop the Pilot. Happy listening.
I saw her perform at a folk festival, she wasn’t the headliner but she was the highlight.
Well the USA have only just found out who Kate Bush is 🤷♀️
I only saw her & band twice- in Chicago- 1980's. Brilliant!
Now that voice is pure romance. Beautiful purity of tone. Totally classy in every way.
I went to a Joan Armatrading concert - Toronto 1978 - not knowing what to expect and came away totally in love with Joan & her amazing music! Thank you for taking a chance by reacting to this brilliant singer/songwriter Daniel.
I love Joan Armatrading! She still gives me chills. Thank you for giving her a listen. 💜
Awesome. I just found her via JustJP... Glad you're taking this journey
I was at her Toronto concert in the 80s. It was absolutely amazing ❤
Amazing! First time hearing this. Her voice is marvelous. Impressed :)
A pretty darn good guitarist too.
Sublime song, what a beautiful talent Joan is 💜💜💜
I saw her many times at Red Rocks in the 70s and 80s (she sold it out every time). I noticed some one recommend The Weakness in Me. A very good next step. Her discography is a treasure trove.
Utterly gorgeous isn't it? Impossible to dislike this. So many memories attached to this. All good.
Hello Dawn how are you doing today I
@@davidospina5216 Hi David, you know, I keep on keeping on. How are you?
@@DawnSuttonfabfour That’s good to know. I’m great thanks. Where are you from?
@@davidospina5216 I am a London girl born, bred and worked there until I transplanted here and went coastal . Here on East Coast of England for last 22 years. You?
@@DawnSuttonfabfour Oh okay that’s nice. I live in Oklahoma City but I’m currently working here in Syria.
How’s everything going over there?
Finally, Joan A. She had quite an arc of a career from the mid 70s - late 80s. "Show Some Emotion," both the song and the album, are fabulous. Her best, imo.
I love that 100% .That song didn't last long enough for me.
I was nearly 30 years younger when I first heard this song.
I was working North of Chicago and WXRT played this quite a bit.....
Lord, was it so long ago?
XRT! Know the station well being from Chicago!
@@cherylreichardt
I carried mail in Highwood and XRT was on my Walkman for the 4 and a half to 5 hours I was on the route.
Helped me keep pace and introduced me to some GREAT music and artists.
Hope and pray that you and all here have all of God's Blessings of Peace, Protection and Provision!
✌️
@@andrewpetik2034 Thanks for sharing and for your kind words. 😊
Tall in the Saddle is my favourite of hers. A unique voice, she is a great singer/songwriter, and guitarist.
She's great! I'd recommend her song The Weakness In Me.
"The Weakness in Me" is exquisite.
I love this song. My mind often goes to this song when someone thanks me for something. I also love 'Show Some Emotion.' I saw her live in 83 and she was very good...a very intimate concert.
Ah - the wonderful Joan Armatrading! I saw her live at the 1978 Blackbushe Airport Rock Festival in the UK. What an occasion THAT was. It was about a 2 mile walking distance from my house at the time. Also featuring were the likes of Bob Dylan (it has been reported that Dylan considered that his performance at that gig was the best that he’s ever done). His 10 piece backing band was just astonishing with Eric Clapton in the band. It was one of those WOW moments in the history of rock festivals and I’m so lucky that I made the decision to attend. Attendance figures were reported to be about 250,000 fans. It was HUGE, but sadly very much a one-off occasion. I was never really a fan of Dylan before that, but I certainly was afterwards!
Joan Armatrading has performed ever since and she’s always been around with her name cropping up now and again. What a career!!
Sensual is good word for it. A yearning desire and those strings, yeah good stuff.
Yes, you pronounced her name OK. She's wonderful -- I'm glad to see someone discovering her now. Her 1983 Best-of-ish compilation _Track Record_ is maybe a desert island disc for me. It was in a lot of record collections in the 80s; I used to come across it in the dorm room or apartment of every young woman I was interested in. The most moving of her songs, for me, is "The Weakness In Me".
Good call. More Joan hits:
"Did I Make You Up?" (1988)
"A Woman In Love" (2007)
"Frustration" (1983)
Armatrading is class and an icon in the Joni Mitchell/Kate Bush league. Still making great albums today.
Fun fact: the male backing vocals on "Love & Affection" (1976) were performed by actor Clarke Peters from _The Wire,_ _John Wick,_ etc.
This is why I subscribe to your reaction Channel, you have introduced me to some great new music that I probably would never have found otherwise. I've said it in another reaction: (the talktalk video) but it's worth repeating; that you have taking up the mantle of the disc jockeys role. Such a beautiful song you're doing a great job keep up the good work
Daniel's the best, isn't he?
@@Yosef1952 absolutely.
@@Yosef1952 absolument le meilleur
One of the most easy to listen to artists ever, no matter what she is singing!
Joan is an amazing talent, and a long, rich career. Definitely check out Drop the Pilot, Show Some Emotion, Heaven (raw and powerful)... she's got so many great songs. So glad you gave Joan a chance. Her career spans at least five decades.
I was a heavy metal fan in highschool and I credit a Joan Armatrading tape of my mom's that was stuck in the tape player on a road trip for broadening my mind and tastes. Been a fan ever since.
Thank you for featuring this beautiful, sometimes overlooked artist. Might you also listen to Phoebe Snow? 🌨️🌷
I love that you let the music take you away while listening. You are clearly affected... nice
As a Brit soldier in the 70s and 80s I travelled around a lot, pre cd and I wore out several Joan Armatrading tapes. love the absolute beauty of every aspect of this woman and her music.
What an incredible, lovely voice - and beautiful song. Great end to my evening. Hope you're doing well🙂
Definitely Willow (very much like Love and Affection) and Show Some Emotion (strong jazz/rock influence) ; Rosie is a song that surprisingly wasn't written by her but when you hear her singing it you would swear it was written for her (maybe it was??!) and she was born to sing it (reggae/rock with a joyful, defiant swagger almost).
Me Myself and I; This Weakness in Me ‹‹ two other great songs!
Finally someone reacting to Joan. She is wonderful!!
as coming out songs go this nails it - love Joan
Such a talented singer/songwriter with a huge body of work - definitely worth exploring more
Beautiful!!! Thanks for this! She is Unique! I happened to be in Santa Fe in 2003 for a workshop and found out she was playing there and was able to see her wonderful performance in a patchouli scented ornate theatre. What Luck! She was Amazing!!!
in a just world she would be huge, she has so much talent - beautiful voice that can do so much also a fantastic guitarist, and such pure romance
please listen to more - Willow, the weakness in me, me myself i, i'm lucky... hard to go wrong with Joan...
Good luck with your gig and release. I'll be traveling this Saturday, back from MN. If flights are not delayed I'll purchase your newest LP upon our return if not shortly thereafter.
Thank you for checking out Joan.
She is one of a small handful of guitarist/singer/songwriters who under the beautiful production guidance of Glyn Johns found her voice.
She is a wonder.
Her chord changes- & she Always had a great Bass guitarist.
She is an amazing Songwriter.
One of my favorite artist thank you
Joan Armatrading is a great singer and songwriter, and also a very fine guitarist. I Would recommend her song, " Show Some Emotion " which has a great Jazz/Funk feel.
This is the one that got a subscription to your channel. Joan's music is phenomenal. She's also fabulous live. Down To Zero is another track I think you'd enjoy.
Thanks! Try Show Some Emotion, Rosie, I Love it When You Call Me Names, Drop the Pilot. Great artist, was lucky to grow up in city with radio stations that played this!
Hi i loved this and 'Down to zero' when they came out. Awesome. glad your listening✌
Joan is still performing
Joan Armatrading, the third of six children, was born in 1950 in the town of Basseterre in what was then the British colony Saint Christopher and Nevis, in the West Indies.
A three-time Grammy Award nominee, Armatrading has also been nominated twice for BRIT Awards as Best Female Artist. She received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996.
In a recording career spanning nearly 50 years, Armatrading has released 20 studio albums, as well as several live albums and compilations.
Armatrading first performed in a concert at Birmingham University, England, for her brother at the age of about 16. She only knew her own songs, but her brother asked her to perform something that would be familiar to the audience; she chose "The Sound of Silence". Wikipedia.
Her radio hit FAST CAR was Huge..it highlighlights her contralto voce, and it is a great story telling song
I believe you're thinking of the Tracy Chapman song.
@@falcongal63 You are. absolutely right. The Alzheimer's is particularly bad today.
Love Joan Armatrading
Hello DCH1960 how are you doing today
Quality, Can't Go Wrong With Joan Daniel. 🙂
An emigree from tropical St Kitts and Nevis, one of my 1970's favs. Her talent, lilt and power of her voice set her apart. Suggest her brooding 'Opportunity' as a counterpoint vibe to this one
I had never heard of this girl until JustJP reacted to a live performance of this song about a week ago. You should definitely watch it. This girl is amazing.
Live version of "I love it when you call me names " Well worth doing .
I'm Lucky is another wonderful Joan Armatrading song. Yeah, I was a fan way back in about 1983ish...
I am so glad someone has finally reacted to Joan. She, along with Kate Bush, is my fave female artist. Seen her live and she is awesome and so personal.
Needless to say I could recommend 505 of Joan's best songs to listen to, but I’ve narrowed it down to just a “few” I feel you might appreciate, in rough chronological order from 1973 to present: It Could Have Been Better / Conversation / Dry Land / Cool Blue Stole My Heart (live) / Steppin' Out (live) / Save Me / Tall In The Saddle (live) / Down To Zero / Woncha Come On Home / Show Some Emotion / Kissin' And A Huggin' / Willow / Rosie / Barefoot And Pregnant / Baby I / You Rope You Tie Me / All The Way From America / When I Get Right / I’m Lucky / The Weakness In Me / Frustration / Heaven / Talking To The Wall / Strange / Straight Talk / The Shouting Stage / Can’t Let Go / Someone’s In The Background / Hearts And Flowers / More Than One Kind Of Love / Always / True Love / Wrapped Around Her / Sometimes I Don’t Wanna Go Home / Can’t Get Over (How I Broke Your Heart) / Everyday Boy / Trouble / Less Happy More Often / Liza / Empty Highway / Cry / Summer Kisses / This Is Not That / Loving What You Hate / Already There / Glorious Madness.
Such a beautiful song by a very talented artist. You should try "Show Some Emotion" as well. A brilliant song. Love it and her :) Keep up the good work Daniel. Love your reactions :)
Beautiful
Daniel, I'm a 56 year old straight man, but there's just something really beautiful about seeing you hear this for the first time. It's a total delight - and I hope you find the person that makes you feel like this song feels.
An emigree from tropical St Kitts and Nevis, one of my 1970's favs..the talent, lilt and power of her voice set her apart. Suggest 'Opportunity' as a counterpoint to this one
saw her at blackbushe festival in 1978 and she was the standout performance for me
She was on every college girl's turntable back in the '70's....
My favourite Joan song! Good call man. You should check out the live version on the Old Grey Whistle Test.
Hey, Daniel, I'm so happy you've discovered this wonderful artist I've loved since 1976! Her third album, titled Joan Armatrading, is the one that put her on the map, as far as I know, here in the U.S. It is terrific from start to finish and you should hear it all, reacting or not. The next one, titled Show Some Emotion, is equally great. Have fun in your new rabbit hole!
🎵❤️🎵
Hello Debra how are you doing today
You should check out her song Opportunity. Completely different. Great artist.
Got the name right. A quality entertainer. Heard her in concert at Red Rocks. Check out some live concerts.
Joan is fantastic and has so many great songs & performances. Try listening to her perform "Kissin & a Huggin" or "Drop the Pilot."
Show some Emotion is a brilliant Tune!
Wow what a surprise to see someone reacting to this I hope that you went a little further this particular album is a song called "Save Me" that just really showcases a fragile voice it's amazing
Beautiful music, I love Joan. Tracey Chapman so mirrors her
Just felt like hearing this song and enjoyed listening with you. Great reaction. In the 70’s I played her first two albums more than any others-so much do I bought an extra that I suspect is still unopened somewhere 😂 I thought I would wear them out!
Need to go listen to her other music❤️ I love it
In the U.S. her best known song was …… Me Myself I…….
Joan Armatrading is top 5 greatest female singer/songwriters, and a great guitarist. Wonderful song. Starts like it might be a delicate ballad, then develops into an EPIC Anthem. Greatest opening line of any song about love. "I'm not in love". Open?! Then "But I'm open to persuasion". Breathtaking! Gets me every time.

PS - I have no relationship with Joan Armatrading whatsoever. I did see her live 1976 or 77. Brilliant!
As said by others... delve into her wonderful music.
Love Joan, have seen her in Australia twice. I agree Show Some Emotion is great. Check out a live performance wih Eric Clapton.
That bottom end drop gets me every time. Another song Down To Zero that has not been mentioned is one of my personal favourites. She is a very accomplished guitarist.
Everyone, eventually, fings their way to JA- keep going! This is Glynn Johns produced.
The strings got to me also!!
Great songwriter. All her early albums re great. I played nothing but "Back to the Night" for weeks when it was first rreleased.
Nob one like her.
At one of her shows i saw her go into the wings to dance ....She is kinda shy.
Oh my goodness! I'm so stoked that you got around to this! This was one of my favorites by her back in the 70s. Another one you should check out by Joan is "Down To Zero" (link below). I think you would really love it, maybe even more than this one! Those comments were true -- Joan WAS very underrated at that time! Great reaction and analysis! Thank you, Daniel! 💙✌
Down To Zero - ua-cam.com/video/Brp8Va8XVQw/v-deo.html
I've seen Joan many times over the last ten years or so, always a great gig. On the last couple of tours here in the UK she had young, promising artists open for her.
Daniel, I look forward to hearing your ep stuff.
Thanks Adam! Can't wait for you to hear it.
😀 GOOD ONE!
This lady was very good she has a few more good ones drop the pilot also
One of my all time favourites. Daniel...how do you find these? Such great taste. You're clearly a wondrous, loving soul. Happy you have heard this. Cheers.
This is a big song...........................it carries a lotta water.
There is an astonishingly good mashup of this song with Lou Reed's Sweet Jane, done by Two Nice Girls. Search for Sweet Jane (With Affection).
Love Joan Armatrading's music ! .. She has a long list of great songs in many different styles, and you can't go wrong with any of them .. For an up tempo number, try "Rosie", or for something beautiful and tender, give "No Love" a listen .. I think you'll really enjoy this rabbit hole should you go down it.
You can't go wrong with albums like Me, Myself I or Show Some Emotion. She has a special magic. Seen her live many times. Fantastic original artists and a great guitarist too.
Great choice.
The Beatles producer produced this Album for her.
This always gives me chills, its so good. Maybe you could try Tracy Chapman singing,"Baby Can I Hold You", and "Fast Car" etc.
The first time I heard Fast Car, I didn't think it sounded like Armatrading - I thought it *was* Joan Armatrading. Joan is the one for me though.
