Black Day in July is a song that talks about a bad time in the USA that was banned in many States when it came out. It spoke truth and scared some that it might open the wound again. He wanted awareness brought to that day.

If you like Lightfoot's lyrical histories, I would recommend his Canadian Railroad Trilogy...a folk song history of the westward expansion of the Canadian Western Railroad, that was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcast Company for Canada's 1967 Centennial. It is moving, sad, triumphant, all the things that an expanding 19th Century nation would experience. It is often his encore song at concerts, and was honored as one of the Canadian MasterWorks by the Audio-Visual Preservation Trust of Canada. I recommend the 1975, fully orchestrated version, that was released on his compilation album, Gord's Gold.

For a lovely romantic song for Amber, try his “Beautiful”. For something completely different. A song that American radio stations were discouraged from playing at the time is “Black Day in July”. It’ about the 1967 Detroit riots that reflect the times, and show that not a lot has changed today. If you Googled an alphabetical list of Gordon Lightfoot songs it goes on forever and not a bad one in the bunch. That’s why he truly is a legend!

"Carefree Highway" is my favorite song by Gordon Lightfoot. It's a song about regret and not being able to go back and do things differently. I was 13 when this song came out and I didn't really get it. Boy, do I get it now. Thank you for your appreciation of Lightfoot's music. Some people have called him the Canadian Bob Dylan because his songs are so personal.

This is a special song for me because I live in Phoenix, in the north part of which you'll find the Carefree Highway (a section of I-74). (Yes, there is a city in Phoenix called Carefree.) I pass by the exit to it every time I leave town heading north. I hope you keep going down the Gordon rabbit hole - you can do "Beautiful", "You Are What I Am", "Rainy Day People", or "Dream Street Rose". While I'm at it, can you do more Jim Croce? "Time in a Bottle" or "I Got a Name" has the same smooth vibe as "Carefree Highway", or you can go more in line with "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" and do "You Don't Mess Around With Jim".

This is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. I drove and rode the Carefree Highway (Arizona State Route 74) many times when I was living with my family on Luke AFB in Glendale, Arizona. It was such a beautiful, scenic drive. Gordon uses it metaphorically for this great song, and it's so cool that I have actually ridden the actual highway he sung about in this tune. Now that Gordon has passed, 5/1/23, the music world will never be the same. We've lost a true treasure. A storyteller and troubadour of immense talent. A wonderful musician, songwriter, and most importantly, a compassionate, kind, and caring human being. Being a guitarist myself, I appreciate the incredible talent he truly had. RIP, Gordon. It is no cliche you will be missed. Because, you, sir-will most assuredly be missed.

I saw a UA-cam video wherein Americans were asked to provide their one-word description of Canada. It was interesting to watch, and certainly mostly complimentary, then I thought about my own reaction: my one-word description is "Friend". Anyway, 54 years ago my AM Top-40 radio stations in the Twin Cities (Minnesota) began playing an acoustic-guitar-with-strings song, (it was "If You Could Read My Mind"), sung by a baritone with such expression and emotion; lyrics about a failed marriage/relationship, using references to drug-store novels and movie scripts, where there were no showy, childish, hurt-feeling accusations, only honest regret, and there was no happy ending. Just a man, sorry for the mistakes he had made, and coming to the conclusion that he wasn't going to ask for his wife/girlfriend to come back, because he just didn't feel it anymore. He felt terrible for her, and he felt terrible for himself. Even though I was just a junior-high-school kid who knew nothing about anything, I was stunned. That song helped me discover that there are happy stories and sad stories, we can't dictate or wish how they end: they play out their own way.

“Black Day in July”. is all about Detroit in turmoil. A very prolific lyric to listen. Gordon wrote for others, and is covered by so many many of the artists over time. “Black Day in July”. is worthy of his take on the situation in 1967 summer in Detroit USA.

Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian Folk/Country legend who turned out hits for many years. Funny story (sort of) approximately 10 or more years ago I was working in the newsroom when my phone rang, and the voice on the other end of the line was very familiar..It was Gordon Lightfoot, and he asked my name and then thanked us after telling me that another Toronto news station had been reporting he passed away. We spoke for about 10 minutes. Very nice man.

I’d like to see you react to some of Lightfoot’s earlier, more folk oriented songs like Early Morning Rain, Did She Mention My Name or That’s What You Get For Lovin’ Me. Not the slick production you hear in his later songs, but every bit as good. Just a couple guitars and Gord’s great vocals and lyrics.
