George was on a spiritual quest his whole life after the Beatles, well, actually he started during the Beatles heyday and continue to search spirituality the rest of his life. He ended up being my favorite of the Beatles for that spirituality, actually wrote and sang great music, great guitarist and if you listen to interviews of him ,almost every one he is funny as can be, SO likable!!!

I liked George but as a sort of science-based guy I was never fond of his fascination with spiritual stuff that he merely hoped was out there. Plus, the eloquence of his song Something is a little blunted by the idea that he was a shitty husband to Patti Boyd - you got the girl you wanted, THAT'S how you treat her??... she moves on to his friend Eric Clapton, who similarly writes a brilliant song Layla for her...then cheats on Patti, has a child Conor with a mistress, who dies tragically and Eric writes Tears in Heaven... Fantastic song, but geez, Eric and George, wish you got your stuff straightened out in the REAL world and not just write lovely songs in the world of music.

@@orchidwave2574 Don't cut yourself short. I'm an engineer and a person of Science. An atheist. There is a reason that Oppenheimer was familiar with the Bhagavad Gita and quoted some lines from it during the first successful nuclear bomb test. "I am become death, destroyer or worlds." If you strip away all the superstition and religiosity, Buddhism and Hinduism are rather compatible with science. I read the book 'The Tao of Physics' many years ago. Check it out if you can find a copy.

@@orchidwave2574 I don't know if this makes it better or worse - but George did say at one point that when he started writing 'Something' he was actually thinking of God (by whatever name), and only made it into more of a human love song, to make it more acceptable/commercial or whatever. However, IIRC, in her autobiography Pattie did say he told her her wrote it for her... so maybe a little bit of one, and a bit of the other... Just a love song, a song about the feeling of loving something or someone who 'attracts me like no other lover.."

@@robertserrato3596 From a traditional Hindu perspective this is not a contradiction at all, because in Hindu philosophy God takes multiple different forms and reveals itself in different ways to different people.
There is a famous ancient Sanskrit (ancient sacred Indian language) story of the blind men and the elephant, in which several blind men are supposed to describe an elephant by touching it. One touching the hard tail says an elephant is like a broom, another touching a leg says an elephant is like a column, another touching the belly says why an elephant is much like a wall, the next touches the trunk and finds an elephant is much like a huge powerful snake, the last touches the huge ear and finds an elephant is like a big fan that waves air at you. None of them is wrong, but all but really grasped a fraction of what an elephant really is, just like all religions grasped a part of God's truth and thus should all be respected and tolerated. And this is the way the traditional Indian attitude (both Buddhist and Hindu) towards other religions is (or rather is traditionally supposed to be, cause of course there are always people hungry for power who like to forget about that)
My Indian Hindu mother inlaw for example prays and pays her respects in Churches and Gurudwaras just like she would at the Hindu Mandir. No matter if she is doing a puja at home in front of Ganpati - the Elephant headed God - or if she's taking a kneel in church, in her mind she's always just addressing the universal divine, no matter if at the moment you happen to name it Jehovah, Yahweh, Krishna, Brahma, Ganpati, God and so on.

I agree BIG TIME. Several clips of George Harrison, Eric Clapton and others discussing these creative times are within this great movie. Please check this film out. Great music and a great history of some of the roots of rock and roll.
Roger Waters called their debut album, Music from Big Pink, the second "most influential record in the history of rock and roll,"
The Weight and Up on Cripple Creek are well known popular wise... However they go deeper in there roots of rock and many don't seem to go back this far to the ones who actually influenced those you are reacting to now... What I call back to the roots of rock.
The Band were a roots rock group consisting of four Canadians and one American: Rick Danko (bass guitar, vocals, fiddle), Garth Hudson (keyboards, accordion, saxophone), Richard Manuel (keyboards, drums, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals), and Levon Helm (drums, vocals, mandolin, guitar). Between 1958 and 1963, they originally formed as The Hawks, a backing band for rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. In the mid-1960s they gained recognition backing Bob Dylan, and the 1966 tour was notable as Dylan’s first with an electric band. After leaving Dylan and changing their name to The Band, they released several albums to critical and popular acclaim, highlighted by the songs "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." According to AllMusic, "For roughly half-a-decade, from 1968 through 1975, The Band were one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world." Their influence on several generations of musicians has been substantial: Al Aronowitz called its "country soul....a sound never heard before."
To learn more you NEED BACK STORY . A great to the point summary can be found under the Title description if watching a Video is not your thing... Howerver, Please please please consider

    "All things must pass"
    brilliant songs
    in his Beatle stage:
    Taxman
    While my guitar gently weeps
    It's all too much
    Something
    Here comes the sun
    and in his solo career:
    My sweet lord
    All things must pass
    Isn't it a pity
Give me love give me peace on earth
I got my mind set on you
    Best regards from Argentina

You will NEVER tire of listening to My Sweet Lord! Wherever you are with religion! When Harrison was finished, with nobody else in the room, he must've said - I've come up with something special here!

Billy Preston was known as the fifth Beatle for his keyboard work on several of their songs. He had some number one hits as well: Will it go Round in Circles, and Nothing from Nothing Leaves Nothing. Definitely worth checking out.

Its a religious chant fused with a pop sound. When you close your eyes it can become meditative which George was a fan of.

One of George Harrison's quotes when asked about the names of the Lord & God he used in his lyrics of this song, was “It does not matter what you call Him, just call Him” That quote helped me ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ Another Quote, Spirituality does not come from organized religions, it comes from the search within ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Harrison asked long time Beatles collaborator keyboardist how to write a gospel song , which George wanted to do for his Krishna-ist faith , and this song is the result . A truly wonderful song with Harrisons great slide work .

Some other artists that were mentioned in the song facts are worth checking out if you haven't already. "Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers is a really nice gospel-infused song and was a pretty big hit in the US. They also sang backup for a song by Melanie called "Candles in the Rain", a song about Woodstock. Delaney and Bonnie had a couple of great hit singles, my favorite of which is "Only You Know and I Know" (a cover version of the song originally recorded by Dave Mason). Billy Preston had several big hits in the early 70s, like "Nothing From Nothing", "Will It Go Round in Circles", and "Outa Space". He also played keyboard on the Beatles song "Get Back". And of course Peter Frampton was huge in the late middle 70s.

George did write a simple song but that's what's exciting about music. You can write some thing so simple but yet so awesome. That comes from very talented people. George was singing about many different ways you can know God. George wrote a song called SomeThing . Frank Sinatra said it was the best love song ever written .

RIP, Alan White. Before joining Yes, White was asked to join The Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon and played drums on Lennon's "Imagine" and "Instant Karma". White's talents caught the attention of George Harrison, and played drums on Harrison's debut solo album, "All Things Must Pass". This appears on that album, and that is White playing drums.

George did this song with the great Billy Preston who’s influence lead to the gospel sounding background. George’s own personal search for meaning and spirituality lead him to eastern philosophies. He added these chants or mantras to the chorus. Brilliant work. Ringo, John and Clapton all played on the All Things Must Pass album (1970). May I suggest everyone watch In The Material World: George Harrison on HBO. It explains the entire life of this great man.

A long time ago, on my 10th birthday, I got my first record player along with a paper bag full of second hand, jukebox records. They included My Sweet Lord along with The Beatles - Penny Lane, McCartney's Another Day & Ringo's It Don't Come Easy. the other 45's were No Matter What by Badfinger, Yellow River by Christie, Band of Gold by Freda Payne , You've Got Me Dangling on a String by Chairmen of the Board & Mony Mony by Tommy James & The Shondells. Back to My Sweet Lord, in the UK we had best of both worlds as What Is Life was on the B side!
