I'm 66. This is one of those songs that when you heard as young person you didn't get it. Now that you've gone down the road of life you get every single word and every single emotion. Hauntingly beautiful.
And then Gordon passed shortly after you made your video (May 1, 2023, at age 84). RIP, Gordon. Canada has lost a nation icon, and the world an artist.
I remember this song from my mother playing this record when I was a small child. RIP to my mother and Gordon Lightfoot. Both passed away on the same day May 1st 2023.
Dear Mr. Lightfoot: I never did get to meet you or go to a full concert of yours, but you were my first songwriting hero. And now...farewell to a legend. But we will always have your music!
Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian legend & one of the best singer songwriters. He has had many hits through his long career such as "Early Morning Rain", "Steel Rail Blues", "Ribbon Of Darkness", "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", "Rainy Day People", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" & many more. I saw him in concert once.
Unfortunately, "heroes often fail". When my husband and I saw him live, he was drunk and several times stopped in the middle of a song and said "I can't remember the rest of the lyrics" and just started another song! He never apologized, we were fans, but were so disappointed we spent our limited funds in college for the tickets.
My very first concert was seeing Gordon Lightfoot in Long Beach, Calif... I was 16, it was May, 1975; I'm going on 64 now & I still remember every detail of that night so well❣️ A whole group of us went and he was just amazing.. My personal favorite has always been "Beautiful" for the sentimental reasons that I will always hold close in my heart; I really loved everything he sang, but for a song that is eerily gripping, draws you in and makes you see & feel as tho you're living every moment as the music & story unfolds, none are more hauntingly powerful than "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald"- the feelings stay with you long after the song is over... I know, just as many great musicians, story tellers, balladeers are, that he had his demons- even more apparent as the years continued to take their toll. My heart always went out to him, for the troubles of his personal life, and at the same time, I truly respected the artist that he was, the stories that he shared as only he with his unique voice & soul could, and was grateful for the way his voice & songs always touched my soul, my heart in such a deep way! I pray he is finally at peace 🙏💖🕊️
He did become completely sober. He was a songwriter before he was a performer & was not that comfortable on stage for many years. I saw him 7 times in concert & his voice was always pure velvet with little talk to the audience. His legacy lives on in all the music he has left us. From Kristine Ferrell❤️💔
Another storyteller you may enjoy is Jim Croce. Some song titles include Time in a Bottle, I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song and I Got a Name. Unfortunately, he was finally reaching the notoriety he was worthy of when he died in a plane crash, but his music is timeless. Give it an ear.
Gordon passed away about 3 weeks ago now on May 1st. He was Canada's greatest balladeer without doubt... He wrote this song while he was going through a divorce and it was when I was going through mine that I realized he had penned the most perfect enunciation of the loneliest, saddest feeling in the whole world. A feeling like grief from a death but the person is still alive and it is the love between you that has passed away... You should react to his song Carefree Highway next. It is the perfect follow-up to this...
He died on May 1st unfortunately. I was shared this music by my mother after she remembered sitting in a chair in Japan listening to her dads records of Gordon. I was really grateful as I was really into Glen Campbell. Sundown and this song became very special to me as they were special to my mother.
Listen to Gordon's song, Too Late For Praying. This song will make stop in your tracks and look at where we are today, tomorrow and in the future. Its absolutely spot on. To everyone who reads this, take a journey through all of Gordon's music . Its a music vacation you will take over and over. He was a gift to everyone. Its heartbreaking to realize we wont be able to see him in concert again but his music and the memories will live on forever. To everyone, all the best. Thank you Gordon Lightfoot. RIP
Gordon passed on May 1st, 2023 at the age of 84. He left a legacy of hundreds of songs for fans, now and in the future. This song is a masterpiece in my estimation. The poetry of the bittersweet lyric coupled with Gordon's vibrant voice and a superb arrangement make it so. One of his very best. Thanks, Gord, for the music and memories.
Gordon was Bob Dylan's favourite songwriter. Such a voice, such music. I've loved this song since it first came out. There are so many wonderful songs that you could listen to - Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Carefree Highway, Ribbon of Darkness, Minstal of the Dawn, the list just goes on and on. RIP Gordon Lightfoot - we are poorer for your passing.
Gordon was definitely our Canadian treasure. This song brings back so many memories. He wrote this during or just after his divorce. His voice is so mellow and his songwriting is perfection. He'll be missed.❤❤❤❤
The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was one of his biggest hits, and it’s a true story about a ship that sinks during a storm and lake superior, which is the biggest of the great lakes in the Midwest. It’s between the US and Canada. Another good one is the song Sundown
Mr Lightfoot is a genius! I can't remember a single one of his songs that wasn't full of wonderful vocals and brilliant lyrics. Thank you for adding him to your list of artists :)
From the first guitar note you know this is a masterpiece. From the 1970 album Sit Down Young Stranger, later renamed " If You Could Read My Mind", this is about Gordon's marriage breakup. This is quintessential Gordon, beautiful story teller voice and a first class accompaniment. You need to please invest your time in more Gordon. Sundown Early Morning Rain Carefree Highway Black Day in July The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Glad you loved it Craig. Memories are precious. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Gordon actually wrote this song about his first wife. He felt guilty for things that happened and this is what came out of it. His daughters didn't want him to record it but he said he had to. I'm glad he did. It's a beautiful song and he is definitely a legend. His voice and singing style coupled with the beautiful arrangements and just the unique way he put songs together made him a top tier artist. Love your reactions. Have a great day!
I'd love for you to go down the rabbit hole with Gordon. When I was in my early 20s, my best friend and I went to see him in a club in Hollywood and we sat at a table right in front, just a few feet away and we stayed for all of the sets. What a memory,.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a wonderful song based on a true story. It came out in 1976 (When I graduated from high school). I think you will enjoy it.
You should check out Gordon's song, "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald". It tells the true story of what happened to the ship Edmund Fitzgerald. It sunk in Lake Superior, between Canada & the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. 👍
He is one of Canada's most famous artists! He's amazing! If you haven't heard Wreck of the Edmonton Fitzgerald, I recommend it to be next!! I love that it brought back wonderful memories for you. It's one of the powers of great music!
Unfortunately the we just lost Gordon but his music will live on forever. A Canadian Legend with an Amazing Legacy that the whole World will enjoy for generations!!
I was 7 and my brother was 5 when we saw Gordon on the repeats of the Midnight Special. And he had just released the song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. And sadly I never got to meet him. Or see him live. And sadly he passed away. Around my father did. But I hope they ring the bell 30 times. Just for the crew and Gordon.
You must listen to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," my favorite of his. Haunting - a beautiful tribute to those crews who risk their lives on the freighters. What a voice and great guitarist as well.
I've listened to this song a lot this week, since Gordon passed away. It gets more gorgeous each time I listen to it, and have to admit shedding tears as well. He was a poet and storyteller, as well as singer and musician. There will never be anyone quite like him. Check out a song called Ode to Big Blue...it's a song about a whale that is rather hauntingly beautiful.
Isn't it weird when a song does that to you. I remember being g a little girl and my parents would go to a bowling alley every week. There was a song called "Satin Sheets" by Jeanne Pruett that always played. One day as an adult it came on and just stopped me in my tracks. Just for a moment I was transported back to that little girl again. Isn't music amazing!
A much revered Canadian singer songwriter. He has written and recorded so many wonderful songs, his most famous probably being The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. I was lucky to see him every time he was on tour in the USA for decades, and the last time for me was in 2019.
When I was about 13 I saved up my allowance and bought the album shown. I lived out in the country where nothing ever happened, and though I didn't quite understand what the song meant it seemed a glimpse into knowing what fascinating events happened to other people in other places. Gordon Light foot is a wonderful story teller.
I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to learn to sing this song but I could never do it cause when I try to sing it I choke up with emotion. I love turning Gordo onto the younger generation who are often fascinated by his music because they have never heard popular music that was this good.
Gordon Lightfoot's was the very first concert I ever went to.. I was 16 and it was May, 1975 in Long Beach, Calif ❣️ My friends and I all loved his music.. his voice & songs spoke to us.. We lost one of the world's great story tellers, balladeers!
This song is intriguing and so honest. You are right, and it takes me back to a long time ago. How does this song seem to touch so many people over such a long period of time. Timeless!
Gordon Lightfoot feeds out the words of his songs as if he had a coil of rope he was metering out behind him to measure a distance. I relax into the predictable pace. His clear diction smooths the process. His guileless, butterscotch voice evokes the feeling of a chant. His poetry is so personal and precise I cannot anticipate his words, but the inexorable rhythm assures me they will come if I just wait for them. And between the words, interesting sounds or a change in rhythm to complete a feeling or pique my curiosity and prepare me for the next stanza. For a few minutes I'm immersed in someone else's world. That's intimacy.
Thank you for this reaction. Gordon Lightfoot has so many beautiful and haunting songs. One of his lesser known songs in "Pony Man." I heard he wrote it for his children. I used to play it for my daughter when she was a little girl. It's fun! He creates a picture in one's mind that delights kids and adults while listening to it. Of course, "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is haunting. There, too, one develops pictures in one's mind and you can feel what those poor men felt. No matter what songs by Lightfoot you choose to listen to, you won't be disappointed.
Loved that song "Pony Man". I was a primary school teacher many years ago, and that was one of the songs my little kids just loved. We had a regular school music broadcast, with an accompanying music book, and the songs in it were almost all terrific. I was young and played guitar and sang, so we had a lot of music in my classes every year.
I love his music 😊 But I truly enjoyed watching your reaction after you realized you'd heard it as a child 😊 that touched my heart ❤ Thank you Sir for your reaction hope you and your family have a blessed evening 🙏 sending love from Lafayette Georgia 🙏 🍑
I love Gordon Lightfoot. I've seen him in concert 3 or more times. His Canadian Railroad Trilogy was used during one of the Olympics when it was in Canada - I don't remember which one though. Songs - Sundown, Rainy Day People, Carefree Highway, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
You seem to have never heard this song before. One of the most beautiful songs Ever written. I grew up with Gordon. He Was a living legend, and will remain that way in my best songs list. 💿 RIP GORDON LIGHTFOOT🙏💔🌌
Gordon Lightfoot has so many good songs, and he's a great storyteller. If you haven't reacted to it yet, try reacting to " The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald." It'll give you goosebumps. Thank you for your great reaction. It's refreshing to watch you get into this genre of music 😊
Gordon lightfoot is an amazing singer. Absolutely love his voice, his songs are almost ballads. His Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is haunting a great tribute to those brave men who lost their lives.
I've always been amazed at the therapeutic value of music, how it can take you back to when you first heard the song, shedding the years, bringing back memories. I loved that you felt good things when you heard this again. Timeless, beautiful song and artist.
This made me so happy to see that you reacted to Gordon Lightfoot and this song. My best friend from high school introduced me to his music in the late 70s and I was hooked. He has so many great songs. He is a storyteller and is so good at what he does. Some of my personal favorites are not well known as they probably never reached the air waves. If Children Had Wings, Don Quixote, Christian Island, to name just a few. His storytelling really comes out in The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It is an accounting of an actual ship wreck and it is haunting. Likewise, before the Fitzgerald, he also paid homage to another ship wreck with the Ballad of Yarmouth Castle. For lighter fare of his music, The Pony Man is fun ☺ It is a children's song. Thank you so much for reacting to Gordon Lightfoot. I hope you will react to more of his music ❤
Couldn't sleep, went to music, and am being bombarded with music from my childhood. Literally having vivid flashbacks in my head. Maybe I couldn't sleep because I needed this journey.
My mother would sit in a chair in Japan in the 70s and listened to Gordon on her dads records. Within the last year, she told me this and it’s been a blessing to know his music and I’m glad you reconnected with it. Glen Campbell is similar in his brilliant lyric writing.
As Bob Dylan said, "Gordon Lightfoot went his entire life never having written a bad song."
This is the song he wrote after his divorce. All the failure, all the pain. We’ve lost one of our greatest song writers, music, lyrics and voice.
Best 3-4 minute song ever
I'm 66. This is one of those songs that when you heard as young person you didn't get it. Now that you've gone down the road of life you get every single word and every single emotion. Hauntingly beautiful.
Well said!
I’m also 66 and agree 100%
I was born in 1970 an i got this song my whole life
And then Gordon passed shortly after you made your video (May 1, 2023, at age 84).
RIP, Gordon. Canada has lost a nation icon, and the world an artist.
Gordon was the best singer/songwriter ever, in my book.
I remember this song from my mother playing this record when I was a small child. RIP to my mother and Gordon Lightfoot. Both passed away on the same day May 1st 2023.
😢 I’m so sorry -what a coincidence of life
My deepest condolences.🕯️🌹
The saddest and most beautiful melodic song about a failed marriage. The 🎻 VIOLINS were a perfect touch. REST IN PEACE GORDON🙏
Dear Mr. Lightfoot: I never did get to meet you or go to a full concert of yours, but you were my first songwriting hero. And now...farewell to a legend. But we will always have your music!
R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot (May 1, 2023). His music will live on.
My favorite Gordon Lightfoot song♥️🎶

Sundown is probably my favorite song of his: ua-cam.com/video/1IBdZ645S-o/v-deo.html
@Carl Anderson Mine too, but equally The Edmond Fitzgerald!! 🙂
Unfortunately, "heroes often fail". When my husband and I saw him live, he was drunk and several times stopped in the middle of a song and said "I can't remember the rest of the lyrics" and just started another song! Heaven's choir just got another angel voice. RIP Mr. Lightfoot
RIP to the legend, he may be gone but his music will live for generations
This is top 3 greatest songs all time
This song was recently voted as the number 1 Canadian song during an open vote. Gord, your talent and true canadian spirit will be forever missed. RIP
As a Canadian, I'd totally agree with that! Probably my second is Anne Murray's You Needed Me, what epic songs both truly are!
Bittersweet listening here as Gordon passed a few days ago. Truly a legend.
One of my all time favorites…. 😊
Gordon passed away about 3 weeks ago now on May 1st. He was Canada's greatest balladeer without doubt...

Gordon Lightfoot - a masterful storyteller and songwriter/poet. We shall not see his likes again.
The true soul of Canada
As a Canadian this makes me so proud and so sad
One of my favorite songs of all time!
A rare artist who is able to weave a story in his music and songs 🎵 🎶 💕.
"I don't know where we went wrong, but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back." I thought that this only happened to me and my dearest Girl.
He died on May 1st unfortunately. I was shared this music by my mother after she remembered sitting in a chair in Japan listening to her dads records of Gordon. if you ask a canadian what is there music we just say gordon lightfoot he gave us so much to share with the world
Gordon is a lyrical genius, the only song more beautiful is his "Beautiful"
and you're welcome ❤️
The arrangement of this song is breathtakingly gorgeous. Such a beautiful and bittersweet song.
Gordon Lightfoot was calming yet deep part of my teens. Glad you enjoy him too.
Gordon was Bob Dylan's favourite songwriter. Such a voice, such music. I've loved this song since it first came out. Don't forget Early Mornin' Rain. I love that song.

I’ve never heard anyone describe it the way you did. It pulls you in. Because as adults I think we can relate it to something we’ve experienced.
Gordon actually wrote this song about his first wife. He felt guilty for things that happened and this is what came out of it. His daughters didn't want him to record it but he said he had to. The song (Edmund Fitzgerald) is a must by Gordon Lightfoot. Based on the sinking of a cargo ship on the great lakes

He's amazing!
If you haven't heard Wreck of the Edmonton Fitzgerald, I recommend it to be next!!
I love that it brought back wonderful memories for you. It's one of the powers of great music!
The lyrics are killer!!
I wish more music was like this! Rest in Peace Mr. Lightfoot!
Gordon Lightfoot is a storyteller, a balladeer, a minstrel of old. He even has a song called "The Minstrel of the Dawn".
No matter what type of music you prefer you have to appreciate a story teller. They demand your attention. Lovely.
Unfortunately the we just lost Gordon but his music will live on forever. A Canadian Legend with an Amazing Legacy that the whole World will enjoy for generations!!
If you like poetry in songs check out Leonard Cohen, the other Canadian singer-songwriter.
Picture it, America, February 1971. And playing on the radio "If You Could Read My Mind." Priceless...
Not sure I've ever heard orchestral strings done this tastefully in popular music.
My God...what a song writer...cannot agree more with the sentiments of the Taylor family. Just awesome and cannot be ignore or forgotten.
I've listened to this song a lot this week, since Gordon passed away. It gets more gorgeous each time I listen to it, and have to admit shedding tears as well. He was a poet and storyteller, as well as singer and musician. There will never be anyone quite like him. Yes "The Wreck.....". and bear in mind that all proceeds from the song went and still go to the families of the victims....
Great song writer....In a castle dark...instead of a dark castle...epic writing....Forstress strong...dear lord
Gordon Lightfoot is a legend. I watched his biography and it was amazing. He inspired so many people.
I found Gorden Lightfoot after i was grown. I wasnt born when this came out. But love the man he put music to poetry. He was a poet.
You did two of his big hits. The other two biggies are "Carefree Highway" and "Sundown".
I love the genuine smile on your face the entire length of this song. I felt reminiscent for you! Great reaction 🤗
A much revered Canadian singer songwriter. He has written and recorded so many wonderful songs, his most famous probably being The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.
I was lucky to see him every time he was on tour in the USA for decades, and the last time for me was in 2019.

Master storyteller, set to music. Every song plays on the heartstrings.

Gordon has always been one of my favorites. A wonderful singer and song writer!
He was amazing. RIP Gordon.
It’s melodic and pretty but it’s about a painful divorce and the death of love. I’m always surprised when people feel it’s a touching love song.
I played this a lot when I was younger soooo good great storytelling
This song is intriguing and so honest. You are right, and it takes me back to a long time ago. How does this song seem to touch so many people over such a long period of time. Timeless!

Yeh, ya can't listen to this song without your heart feeling deeply... his vocals... the lyrics... for me, he contributed to my " coming of age"... 💖
Yes ❤
The best lyric I have ever heard: Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours,
Gordon lightfoot is an amazing singer. Absolutely love his voice, his songs are almost ballads.
His Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is haunting a great tribute to those brave men who lost their lives.
Incredible song and perhaps the greatest song ever written which is saying everything given the great music of the 60's and 70's alone
Beautiful song!
Dylan said, “Gordon doesn’t have a bad song, he’s the one who’s catalog I love the most”
It’s like having a heartbreak fall in your lap. An amazing feeling to have.
My mother would sit in a chair in Japan in the 70s and listened to Gordon on her dads records. Within the last year, she told me this and it’s been a blessing to know his music and I’m glad you reconnected with it. Glen Campbell is similar in his brilliant lyric writing.
Love this, Just imagine the feelings when he wrote this. True art.
