I recently read the biography and Bob Dylan has a lot of respect for Gordon Lightfoot. The two men often got together chatted, jammed, had coffee. Dylan referred to him as a master songwriter.
Growing up in the 70's, and 80's, in Michigan, it was my experience that the closer to Canada you get, the more Rush, Gordon Lightfoot and Anne Murray on the radio. I didn't mind that. At all.
Hey nozecone I am from Windsor myself and I agree! I enjoyed Motown and all the great music from the other side of the border in Detroit. Still have all the concert tickets stubs from the concerts my friends and I enjoyed at Joe Louis and Cobo. Great memories.
I grew up on heavy metal and the first time I heard that album it blew my mind, and I realized then and there that I was missing out. Funny thing is That album was leant to me by another metalhead. Let’s just say we willingly widen our horizons after that.
He and Don McLean have the same style, intricate acoustic guitar, poignant voice, and haunting lyrics which put a chill down your spine. If You Could Read my Mind, Vincent, and Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald are masterpieces of this genre.
He was going through a divorce and he said that he had let his career get in the way of his marriage. The ghost that she couldn't see was him. The romance novel he is referring to describes the heartbreak they felt. He says he doesn't know what went wrong in the song though.
Thanks for that, such a beautiful song, IMHO possibly THE most beautiful song clearly had to come from very deep, you've made one of my very favourite songs even better, thanks so much, clearly i'm a soft old romantic, thankyou.
I consider Gordon Lightfoot to be one of those performers who is in Canada considered a national treasure but has ascended beyond that to a world treasure. His music is timeless. It fits into no category, not really, but is eminently listenable anywhere anytime.
I saw this talented man in Boston during the 1970’s. He is amazing with his gorgeous voice and his twelve string guitar. Such a beautiful performance from a genius singer/songwriter
Gordon Lightfoot died Monday, May 1. He brought such a range of fantastic songs, telling great stories, and using his voice to captivate and touch his audiences for six decades. A lot of musicians come and go and are forgotten in a matter of weeks or months, but someone with the talent and depth of Gordon Lightfoot will be remembered for decades to come.
Lightfoot is a giant. This is one of many of his songs that one must pause, take a moment to listen, and feel what the songwriter is feeling. This one always brings me to tears. It is a monster of a great song! All Gordon Lightfoot songs a gold!
I live just down the road from Orillia, Ontario, which is Gordon's hometown. I got to see him perform at Casino Rama. Front row. It was one of the best nights in my life.
Gordon Lightfoot is an artist that tells a story in his songs. His voice is gentle but powerful in the sense that he has a way of making people feel the emotions of the story. That is not easy to do!
He's an amazing storyteller. The melody, his voice, it all comes together perfectly. After all these years I still get emotional with this song. Just something about it. Like you said, it's a masterpiece.
He's a Canadian National Treasure. I grew up listening to him. He has so many good songs. Sundown , Carefree Highway , The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald , Early Morning Rain , ... I could go on forever. Love Gordon Lightfoot ! Cheers from Canada.
Gordon Lightfoot, it was so soothing and relaxing to hear him on the radio back then, even when he sang about a tragedy like the Edmund Fitzgerald, he's in that group, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, kinda folk music, his voice was more dreamy, so glad first of all that you enjoyed, please do more, keep going we love it,.Godspeed, Peace ✌
Only by listening to Rick Beato's in depth analysis of this song, What Makes This Song Great, Ep 94 will you get a full appreciation of just how accomplished this composition is.
Its the kind of song that can BREAK anyone over 40. If its not breaking your heart yet... Just wait. You have to live a while to hurt enough to get it.
Nice reaction. I was still living at home; just after I got my Vietnam draft notice, right before I moved out. I would sit in the basement and listen to the local “underground “ fm station with just a candle for light and this song would transport me somewhere else. One of my all time faves. Thanks😎✌🏽☮️🎸
Gord is over 80 now, vocals still sharp-but COVID, at his age, is deadly so 2021 is a no-go. When Dylan first heard this very song he didn’t think a man could write so clearly & still remain sincere as to write such music. I was a big fan, after hearing this I’ll dig out my records
Love Gordon Lightfoot. His voice is hauntingly beautiful. Gives me chills everytime I hear his music. I'm a Navy vet.One of my favorite songs of his is The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. A vessel that sunk during a storm on Lake Michigan. The whole crew of 12 was lost. Check out the song.
The greatest singer songwriter the great country of Canada has ever produced. I had the good fortune too see this man 7 times in my life. 7 great nights. Man can tell a story and draw you in. The word legend and legendary are thrown around way too much in this industry. This dude is a bona fide legend. Makes me proud too be Canadian. Gordon Light is one of the gods of Folk music. He tells tales or stories in poetic words creating images in your head that makes you really think and feel the story or message. One of greatest all-time songwriters and voices. Harry Chapin, James Taylor, and Gordon Lightfoot always wrote songs poetically.
Man does not have a bad song. Best known for song written about a true story of shipwreck in Lake Superior. My grandmother is lost to that lake ....plane and bodies never located somewhere near Isle Royale. Song about the Fitz is haunting and illustrates the power of those inland seas.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is a must. I grew up in Michigan, the actual wreck happened on Lake Superior when I was 18. The entire state was glued to the TV for days, hoping for survivors...
"The Poet Laureate of Canada." A great troubadour in the real sense - i.e., a storyteller as much as a musician- and what a voice. He's had so many great songs: "Sundown", "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", "Song for a Winter's Night", "Early Morning Rain", "Summertime Dream", "Don Quixote", "Steel Rail Blues"... a huge catalogue of classics. IIRC "If you could read my mind" is about his divorce.
One of Lightfoot's best songs. The lyrics can stand alone, which is beautiful. If you simply read the lyrics without the music, it tells the tale of a bittersweet love affair from a profound and mature viewpoint. Brilliant.

To paraphrase Bob Dylan, the only bad thing about a Gordon Lightfoot song is when it ends.
So true...

@@saymynameice-zen-berg511 so true…imagine a collaboration.
I like that, he canceled his yearly Massey Hall which must have bummed him, I’ve seen him there a few times, great acoustics.
Dylan made a special point of inducting Lightfoot into the Canadian Hall of Fame.
Gordon Lightfoot has one of the all-time great voices in addition to being an exceptional songwriter.
I could listen to him from the early morning even if it rains until sundown...
This song makes me feel proud to be Canadian. And I am not Canadian
No to mention he is an exceptional acoustic guitarist especially on the twelve string guitar
Gordon Lightfoot is a global treasure.
Absolutely.

Hey, in Windsor we got your Motown, so it wasn't so bad on our end, either!
Other side of Canada in the west it was Neil young, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchel and The Guess who.

Naw, the line "you won't read that book again because the endings just too hard to take". Man, that one chokes me up
Try the "wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" true story song.

Also. try Teddy Bear by Red Sovine.
Omg great Song
Both are incrediblely well done songs detailing tragedies.... one more personal than the other. Gordon is an incredible storyteller.
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the song that makes men cry.
His album "Sundown" is a masterpiece. Every song on it is fantastic.
