I had one in high school...late seventies. Everyone laughed at it. Five years later when Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" came out it was the coolest cart of the the time. Mine was a yellow coupe with an eight track player and home speakers on the rear seats.
My parents had a '59 Cad. It was so big, they couldn't close the garage door; it had dimples on it from resting on the points of those fins. It was probably the gaudiest car GM ever made, but it was so comfortable. Our family of four could drive all the way from L.A. to Las Vegas on a summer day in comfort. And all our luggage fit in that huge trunk.
The 59 is one of my most favorite Cadillacs. I've never been intimidated by the size of the car or its fins. Maybe because I took the time to find out how this and the entire GM divisions came to be put into production in 1959. However at the end of the day I am just a Car Crazy Cadillac fan till the day I die. Glad I checked this 📹 out!

I think all those involved with designing, building, selling and owning these fine cars must have really known how special they were when they came out in '59. Cadillac has made many fine machines and this iconic version is super special. Love the amazing condition it is in and its wonderful to see it rolling out in the beautiful weather.

The ultimate beauty. Most cars today look like tadpoles on wheels & are driven by over hyped up knuckelheads or stressed-out nervous Nellies fed on hormones pumped into chickens you get at your local grocery store.
As someone who was in a serious accident in a 1964 chevy without seatbelts, crawling out of the overturned car without a scratch, I've come to the conclusion that safety regulations are a bunch of money making scams by safety companies.

Chris Allen My Dad was a welder and my mom was a housewife. They paid $4500 cash for our base model two door coupe. They kept it until 1972, when they traded it with 52K mikes for a four door mid size Buick. The Buick was a nice driving car. The Cadillac was distinguished mostly for its size and design. The Cadillac was garaged and kept immaculate by me and my Dad.
The 59 was always my favorite growing up. Now that I’m older it’s still top 5 but I think I may have to put it behind the slightly more muted style of the 61/62 bodies. Hard to say, those fins are just amazing.

Another long-time fave. I used to work in the GM building, where a 1959 Eldorado Biarritz convertible was on permanent display in the lobby (top down). I visited it every day on my lunch hour. One day I took a measuring tape with me and noted the fins were 13" tall. 1959 and 1960 Plymouth (full size) fins were 12" tall. 1960 Chrysler & DeSoto fins were 13" also, but slanted and much thicker, so you didn't realize how big they really were. All great cars.
I was 13 years old in 1959. Back then a lot of oider people drove cadillacs. A lot of them felt that the 59 cadillac was such an embaressment. Also people that had one were constantly having the taillights stolen. It was the epitomy of the 50s. Note the 60 and 61 were more subdued. I love it thanks for the presentation

I remember my mother had a 59 red convertible like this but with solid red interior in 1965 and only paid 250.00 for it. Back then it was just a 6 year old used car and not the holy grail it is today. I also remember it was side swiped on 15th Street in Washington, DC and she never retrieved it from the towing yard. Even as a 10 year old I loved that car. To this day the 59 is still my dream car. What I wouldn't give to have one now.

I think this is worthy meaning of life to have and drive , earn up money and buy that car, even girlfriends and wives are not so reliable as this car, this car never leave you and never trait you .(if some moron going to condemn and criticize for my opinion, I don't give a damn). If my life ain't going to be like that, don't call me to this world. P.S: ugly rusty bucket, with vegetable weak shit "engine" (about 1-2liters), some kind of Honda Civic, or Hyndai Accent, Saab, Opel Omega, Hyndai Solaris, Nissan Murano and Nissan Almera, life with buckets like that, doesn't look like good and happy
I have a 1959 4-door cadillac deville, I finished the restoration this year after 4 years of work, the result is the same as in this video, only, I'm in Italy, I love American cars
Lou..you are the man...maybe your best video ever....any kid who grew up in the 50s-early 60's, has to swoon seeing this absolutely gorgeous example of his youth...makes the cars of today look so drab and dull....really appreciate your effort...and that is one lucky gentleman, and he must have some nice size bucks, to have paid for the magnificent restoration!

I transferred to a new school in my senior year in 1967. In study hall a girl passed me a note asking if I knew how to drive. Yes. Would I teach her? What kind of car do you have? Her mother's '59 Coupe deVille. Oh, absolutely! :) Her mother was short and could barely see over the dash. Actually I was more of a driver for the girl who was really, shall we say, popular with the boys who spent my driving time through SE CO and NE NM with her BF du jour in the back seat. Loved driving that car.
Hi Robert, Hope you're behind the wheel of the right one for you soon. Thought you'd enjoy this video too :-) Lou ua-cam.com/video/f-sQyJNGFlU/v-deo.html

I had the honour to restore a 59 4 door -the owner bought it in Montana trailered to Ontario Canada and I worked on it for over a year . It seemed to be never ending ,length wise .When I was younger ,I thought it was vain to record my doing those things ,but that was a mistake in hindsight I guess. Great videos Lou. Thanx.

I've wanted a '59 Cadillac exactly like this ever since I saw it in a car collectors book when I was a little kid, it's probably what started my obsession with '50's Cadillacs.
Beautiful car, the Elderado for years was the pinnacle of luxurious drop top driving. When you say Elderado this car if not the first is the second thing that pops in your mind if your into cars.

The late 40s and 50's Cadillacs were iconic, I would own one or more but as much as I love them, I don't wish to be a caretaker for old cars. That said I'm glad people like Jay Leno do what they do and I get to admire those iconic works of art for free. TheReaper!

In the early 60s there was a toy called a Playmobile. It was the dash of a car with a windshield. Seeing the dash in this Cadillac I would say it was the inspiration for that toy.

I passed my driving test in one. Fins helped to locate the end of the car and the wheels. Learned to drive sighting along the fins to stay on track while backing out of a long, two-track gravel driveway. Passed driving test on the first try, including parallel parking! This one is fine, except the underside of the dash and steering wheel were eggshell, and the top half was black.
I'll bet that car is booked for several years in advance for weddings and parades! How the heck did he get it backed out of that garage into that narrow alley!
I had two of these, one in UK and one in California. Both red. I thought the fiberglass top cover only came with Eldorados? But no matter, it looks great. beautiful restoration.

Beautiful automobile! However, at 4:00, you say that the car had been sitting outside for 26 years when you found it in 1982. Unless my math is faulty, that can't be right. In 1982, a 1959 car would have been 23 years old. Am I missing something here? 1956 was 26 years prior to 1982.
thanks once again. I was always partial to GM styling themes from the '50's and '60's. All I can think of when I see this particular Cadillac with its red theme is My Cousin Vinny.
The jury is still out on whether the '59 Cadillac or the '61 Chrysler Imperial had the biggest fins. That aside, Wow! What a car! Thanks for including this one, Lou.
@@loucostabile : LOL. We were having that debate over on my car club's website and it's kind of a subjective thing. If you grade by length, the '57-'58 Desoto has them all beat. That fin ran from the rear tip all the way down to the top of the front door! For height, yes, the '59 Caddy. For width, the '61 Imperial. Totally a subjective thing. One thing, though --- fins were COOL!
the 1959 2 door convertable coupe series 62 in dakota red !!! the number 2 of the space age era cars ! nr 1 is a persian sand or a inverness green 1959 eldorado biarritz convertable coupe !

I'm 20 years old and I remember the day my mother and I went to the vehicle toy section of Müller to buy my favourite American 1950s car: A pink 1959 Cadillac which I still have, though it's partially fallen apart from me playing with it a lot in my younger years (missing bullet shape tail lights, wipers and chrome part next to the boot broke off and loose sun visors and windscreen) Then came the 2017 Piston Riot meeting in the capital city where I and my parents encountered a *real* 1959 Cadillac, registered in the capital city despite the fact 1950s American cars are very rare in Europe.
Hi Florjan, Seeing 1950's cars in American is rare today too. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Parents encountering a car like this :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Seeing it being backed out of that garage is a perfect simulacrum of the contents of a historical tomb (KV59?) being displayed to the public for the very first time. Behold- the personal chariot of a very powerful pharaoh.
I like the garbage bin pick-up in the back alley because in my area it's a mess where we have to drag them to the edge of the lawn but there is Street permit parking on almost all east sides and the bins are tough to get between cars. The handles have to be outward , but because of the Disability laws they can't go out before 5:00 pm or block the sidewalks . Most of the older homes fell under the fire Codes where the garage could not be close to the house on top of the cars having fuel leaks to start on fire from a hot engine . We have back alleys like that where a truck could pick-up bins from both side at once. As for the car . There is a caddy like this in my City and I don't see it very often because it is a summer car. But when I look at these cars I am amazed that this was a normal car to see in the Cadillac show rooms to walk in and buy one. The 1959 Lincoln was another massive car at 2 1/2 Tons with a 430 CID engine.
Hi Gary Wood, Agreed, it does seem amazing in todays day, that back in 1959, you could go into the showroom and purchase one like this, pretty cool, Lou
I almost bought a Coupe de ville in '84 I drove it and thought somebody was following me with those fins. Terrible blind spots because of the fins too. But a neat car and very big.

Why couldn't Cadillac keep making their cars like this? Why? How could you get rid of those BEAUTIFUL tailfins!
Hi Nate Hawk, I like the way you think. I'd love to see some fins too, Lou
@@loucostabile Loveeeee fins and with this '59 Cadillac, they were the *ULTIMATE!* ....Gorgeous car & ride! : )
Fuel prices to power such a big car you need a big engine
In my opinion, I think the 1960 fins looked better.. the front end as well.. I like the 1961 Cadillac as well
I just saw something about that today. The truth is it obstructs your rear view and small kids would get injured

@@loucostabile Just subbed. Great work demonstrating this classic beauty!
Another great car, and video, Lou! It baffles me how modern car makers don't realize how beautiful a red-red interior can be! And the two-tone with white is stunning!
Hi Paul Henderson, Thank you for the kind words on the video, and sharing details you wish we'd see today, Lou
So quiet! Fantastic car. I love the red and white interior.
Hi JAZZ MAN, Glad you enjoyed this one and love the interior :-) Lou
That cars so big it need the beeping reverse sound that trucks make.
You're right! Lou
No it doesn't it's such a work of art, you cannot, not notice it
The 1959 Cadillac is the best Cadillac is literally the best Cadillac ever made!!!
High praise :-)
Jaw dropping... I mean, I'm watching this in disbelieve... What a beauty... Breath taking...
High praise :-)
This was the first car I ever fell in love with. I was 6 at the time. Still my favourite at 23.

My God, that color on that car, I can't.
8-0
Hi Gabri 4 wheels, Congratulations on all your time & effort to create a beautiful fun car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Hi Daniel Lack, Thank you for making my day with your wonderful comment :-) Ron's a heck of a guy and he shares his toys, enjoy this video too, Lou ua-cam.com/video/f-sQyJNGFlU/v-deo.html
daniel lack I can't relate to growing up in the 50's-60's in the slightest, but I agree, this car is absolutely amazing! I wish Cadillac kept making their cars like this!
Awesome '59 Caddy! I am adding that to my collection! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Byron Pink, You have excellent taste in cars :-) Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy. Regarding sharing, you're welcome, Lou

One of my top classics/antiques.
Happy to read you like this one :-)
I transferred to a new school in my senior year in 1967. In study hall a girl passed me a note asking if I knew how to drive. Yes. Would I teach her? What kind of car do you have? Her mother's '59 Coupe deVille. Oh, absolutely! :) Her mother was short and could barely see over the dash. Actually I was more of a driver for the girl who was really, shall we say, popular with the boys who spent my driving time through SE CO and NE NM with her BF du jour in the back seat. Loved driving that car.
Hi joemackey1950, That's an interesting story. Thank you for sharing, Lou
Lou, that made me smile! I love the car!
Glad you love the car, me too. Now we're both smiling :-)
Its something that God would ride it's so elegant man the fins are unbelievable the color is beautiful it's so Cadillac!!!!
Hi Robert, Highest praise :-) Lou

You're welcome Jeffrey :-)
We had a family friend who had a white one just like this. Many drives in the summer with top down. The ride was amazing. This one is just great!
Glad you like this one. Such good memories, thanks for sharing your story, Lou
Thankyou Lou, I keep coming back to watch this video, it's just so special. Such a dream machine and the owner is so in love with his car. The car is lucky to have such a good owner and you too Lou, you love filming these treasured automobile's. Ron comes across as a genuine car enthusiast, you two have a great passion between you. God bless you Lou and all around you.
Hi Wide Awake, I'm glad this video is enjoyable to you :-) Ron and I sure enjoy his car and he's very generous to share it with me. We're having alot of fun :-) Thank you for sharing a wonderful comment, Lou
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I LOVE THE 59 CADDY!!!! SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Hi John, My pleasure sharing this car with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
I had the honour to restore a 59 4 door -the owner bought it in Montana trailered to Ontario Canada and I worked on it for over a year . It seemed to be never ending ,length wise .When I was younger ,I thought it was vain to record my doing those things ,but that was a mistake in hindsight I guess. Great videos Lou. Thanx.
Hi Tim Mullens, Thank you on the compliment on the videos, and hey, it's never too late to try videoing and sharing, Lou

:) "Like driving your living room" :)
That's correct :-)
I've wanted a '59 Cadillac exactly like this ever since I saw it in a car collectors book when I was a little kid, it's probably what started my obsession with '50's Cadillacs.
Hi Ethan Davenport, You have great taste in cars :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
It's like a rolling piece of art
Hi jim bob, Happy to read you enjoy the design of this car :-) Lou
One of the best BADASS American cars ever!
Nice :-)
Beautiful car, the Elderado for years was the pinnacle of luxurious drop top driving. When you say Elderado this car if not the first is the second thing that pops in your mind if your into cars.

The late 40s and 50's Cadillacs were iconic, I would own one or more but as much as I love them, I don't wish to be a caretaker for old cars. That said I'm glad people like Jay Leno do what they do and I get to admire those iconic works of art for free. TheReaper!

one of You Tube's most perfect cars ever... For sure!
High praise Beun007 :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
In the early 60s there was a toy called a Playmobile. It was the dash of a car with a windshield. Seeing the dash in this Cadillac I would say it was the inspiration for that toy.
Hi flamboyantstudioscom, Thank you for viewing and sharing the story of the toy :-) Hope you see many more cars you'll enjoy on this UA-cam Channel, Lou
Hi Frank, Happy to read this video brings back memories of your driving test :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Lou Costabile
Alas, it’s been downhill since then, my glory days.
I'll bet that car is booked for several years in advance for weddings and parades! How the heck did he get it backed out of that garage into that narrow alley!
Practice, practice, practice :-) Lou
I had two of these, one in UK and one in California. Both red. I thought the fiberglass top cover only came with Eldorados? But no matter, it looks great. beautiful restoration.

Beautiful automobile! However, at 4:00, you say that the car had been sitting outside for 26 years when you found it in 1982. Unless my math is faulty, that can't be right. In 1982, a 1959 car would have been 23 years old. Am I missing something here? 1956 was 26 years prior to 1982.
Hi Bill M, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car, and you get an "A" in math class too. Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
thanks once again. I was always partial to GM styling themes from the '50's and '60's. All I can think of when I see this particular Cadillac with its red theme is My Cousin Vinny.
I can see this car being driven in that movie :-)
Love that red !!!!!
Happy to read you enjoy the red :-)
Lou, red is my favorite color.
The jury is still out on whether the '59 Cadillac or the '61 Chrysler Imperial had the biggest fins. That aside, Wow! What a car! Thanks for including this one, Lou.
Two Fin WInners for sure Jimbob :-) Happy to share and you're welcome, Lou
@@loucostabile : LOL. We were having that debate over on my car club's website and it's kind of a subjective thing. If you grade by length, the '57-'58 Desoto has them all beat. That fin ran from the rear tip all the way down to the top of the front door! For height, yes, the '59 Caddy. For width, the '61 Imperial. Totally a subjective thing. One thing, though --- fins were COOL!
Now that is a Caddy! We need a 2020 version of this Lou!
Hi Ron, The Big Daddy Caddy! A 2020 version would be a FUN idea :-) Lou
the 1959 2 door convertable coupe series 62 in dakota red !!!
the number 2 of the space age era cars !
nr 1 is a persian sand or a inverness green 1959 eldorado biarritz convertable coupe !

This car is a symbol of all high hopes humanity had in fifties.
Bright spark from a future, that never happened...
Hi ukranaut, Interesting perspective. Well said. Lou
i remember in also came in pink, lavender, aqua, black, white
Hi MsBenlane, Thank you for viewing and sharing the colors you recall, Lou
I can't believe that's a 390 and there's still so much room in front of the engine. Beautiful car!
Hi Brian, You're right, SOOOO much room (everywhere), just amazing :-)
A few months ago I spiked a sudden interest in classic cars and now I absolutely love them. This car and a ‘57 Chevy are my two dream cars! I would love to just drive to my high school in one of these cars. Ah, I’m in love!

I'm proud owner of a 1968 Ford LTD, 2-door notchback, with hidden headlights.
Nevertheless I prefer the more angular late 60s design, this Eldorado is such a beauty!!
Greetings from Germany :)

High praise.
Ah ya! True piece of Americana.
Big, Bold, and Beautiful :-) God Bless the USA
It's to bad in Europe she would be a elephant in a porcelain case
My dream car. In five years I’ll be hunting for one.❤
Hi Mike, Hope you're behind the wheel of your dream car soon, Lou
Daaaammmmnn. Most beautiful car ever made in USA!!
High praise for the looks of this car :-)
I'm 20 years old and I remember the day my mother and I went to the vehicle toy section of Müller to buy my favourite American 1950s car: A pink 1959 Cadillac which I still have, though it's partially fallen apart from me playing with it a lot in my younger years (missing bullet shape tail lights, wipers and chrome part next to the boot broke off and loose sun visors and windscreen)
Then came the 2017 Piston Riot meeting in the capital city where I and my parents encountered a *real* 1959 Cadillac, registered in the capital city despite the fact 1950s American cars are very rare in Europe.
Hi John Poole, Happy to read you enjoy the unveiling from the garage :-) Lou
My favorite car of all time.
Hi Jim Roveto, Glad to read this a Winner for you. Thought you might like this short video too. Enjoy! Lou ua-cam.com/video/f-sQyJNGFlU/v-deo.html
Hi Brian, "I drove it and thought somebody was following me with those fins." NICE!
i remember as a preteen, my job was polishing the chrome on my family's 59..there's a lot of chrome
Hi lathan area, That's a full time job :-) Lou
Fabulous motor car and video. I keep thinking about how we would manage on our snaking country roads here in England 😀
Hi Christopher, High praise for this car & video :-) Lou
That is a very beautiful Five Nine Cadi
Glad you enjoy this car :-)
Love the video - even better than the shorter version. I do like the "drive-by" as you can see the car from different angles Just a beautiful car!
Hi MrGrandPrix FourSpeed, A Grand Daddy Caddy :-) Lou
