On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 8-29-20.
We're looking at a 1965 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible in Crimson Fire Mist Paint. The car comes with the factory 429 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Paul Dybinski. Paul’s had this car since 1994. He shares he found this car “by accident” literally His wife had an accident, and while the car was in the Dealer getting fixed, Paul drove up in a 1960’s Cadillac and the Dealer asked him about the car. The Dealer then shared he has a 1965 Eldorado for sale, and this is that car.
    ENJOY!

When Cadillac was still Cadillac.. 1965 and fully loaded with everything you could ever need or want even today... Such a better time...

I could not agree more. After 65 and 66, you could slowly see the diminishing class and style that Cadillac was so accustomed to build and offer to their loyal customers.

@coffeeinthemorning I agree; but consider the quality and elegance of the 77 and 78 Eldorado that still exudes Cadillac along with the 86 thru 92 rear wheel drive Broughams. In my opinion, GM no longer manufacture Cadillacs. To be sincere, I don`t know what they are. Maybe a Cavalier with a Cadillac emblem. Take care coffeeinthemorning.

@@brianbrusseau3233 The 80's were the ultimate downfall for the Cadillac. Bad engines and underpowered engines were the order of the day. The Olds 307 was dreadful, but not nearly as bad as the HT 4100 V8.

I agree with you Chevken, simply due to the fact that I have worked on every Cadillac engine from the early fifties through to the mid nineties. I must mention that being a limousine driver at the airport here in Toronto Canada, I have driven many Cadillac`s with the 307 engine that have accumulated well over 6 to 700.000 miles without opening the engine. They operated smoothly, were reasonably economical, always quiet, never burned oil, easy to maintain and although they were not as powerful as a big block engine, their reliability was a proven success with ample power to cruise with five passengers and a trunk full of luggage. Take care Brian

Those lights on the front corners are cornering lights, not side marker lights . They only illuminated when the turn signal on the respective side is on and illuminated white light. The cornering light goes back off as soon as the turn signal cancels out.

That was a gorgeous car and the color combo is just stunning, but have I gotta story for you, my mom and I were living in Denver in 2001, and sadly my aunt was in the hospital dying, so we went out there to visit and in the process I went over to the Buick/ Cadillac/GMC dealer and sitting in the used car lot was a 1965 Cadillac Fleetwood convertible in the same color but with a black interior. It certainly caught my attention because I’m a car enthusiast and this was a rarity in more ways than 1, so while I’m sitting in the car I looked in the glove box and noticed the registration, and knew this was worth buying, because the original owner was none other than Elvis Presley!!! Now, how rare is it that you notice a car like that & accidentally stumble upon the registration and notice that the original owner is a major celebrity!!! Well, I asked someone at the dealer how much they were asking for it and they said it was $12,500!! So after finding that out, I head back to my aunts house and tell my mom about it and said you have to check this out, so the next day we drove over to the dealer that night and I showed my mom the car and she was impressed, I mean the car was in perfect shape considering that it would have needed new weatherstripping all around, no big deal, but can you imagine driving from Vegas to Denver in that?? Unfortunately we didn’t end up buying the car and it sat for some time and called to see if they still had it and they said yes and I still couldn’t convince my mom so then on yet another occasion I called and finally they ended up selling the car so that took care of that. Then a few months later my aunt passed away, went to the funeral in Henderson Nevada, & the 2 of us went to look at a new Mustang GT convertible to drive back in but no such luck. I know this sounds so convoluted and selfish to go to a funeral and come home with a new car, but we ended up a few months later buying a used’94 Mustang GT convertible before the tragedy of 9/11. So in conclusion that Mustang ended up finally coming to Florida in 2006 which is another story & ended up being traded in for a used 2000 Jaguar Vanden Plas, another story in itself!!

Production of the 1965 Fleetwood Eldorado Convertible was 2,125 and the paint color of this example is Crimson Firemist. Base price was $6,754 but most were sold closer to $8,000 which was a lot of money for a new car at that time. Weight was 4,660 lbs .. in comparison the 1965 Lincoln Continental convertible weighed 800 lbs more and the 1965 Ford Thunderbird convertible only weighed 100 lbs less. 340 Horsepower from the 429 V-8 on premium gasoline. The cheaper but more popular Cadillac convertible was previously called the Series 62 but became the DeVille convertible in 1964. The Eldorado Convertible was more unique from 1953 through 1958, such as different rear quarter panels. The 1959 through 1963 models and the 1965 and 1966 models used the same sheetmetal so the only major differences are in trim. The 1964 model did not use rear fender skirts like cheaper Cadillacs. Real wood trim in the interior. All the big GM cars for 1965 had the signature Bill Mitchell style...long but gently curved sheetmetal...bumpers that were well integrated...exterior trim that had just amount of accent without being overdone. Some people consider that year to be his best for the full-size GM cars. Styling on all Cadillacs was extremely understated for both 1965 and 1966...a complete rejection of the earlier years. Blades instead of fins... heavily influenced by the sheer Lincoln Continental.

Yes Linda they were very fine because of the imaginative designers, the quality of the materials and the care and craftsman who assembled these vehicles that in my opinion, in the fifties and sixties had more available options making them at the time far superior to a Rolls Royce. Take the time to research the 1957 and 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. It`s styling and standard features far surpassed any car manufactured in the world at that time. In fact, it took Rolls Royce until the late seventies before they could offer a model that was remotely close to the 57and 58 Eldorado Brougham. Have a great day. Brian

1965 marked a few firsts for Cadillac. As you saw in the brochure, it was the first year for the Calais series, replacing the Series 62 as the least expensive Cadillac. It was also the first year it wore stacked headlamps, as a number of cars got on the bandwagon following Pontiac. And it was the first Cadillac without tailfins since Cadillac started the trend with its 1948 models. That trend had reached its high point with the 1959 models, then the fins gradually melted down each year until they were finally gone for good in '65.
I'll bet this trip was literally riding in the lap of luxury! Thanks to you and Paul for taking us along!

What a beautiful car. Nice colors. Nice Chrome, paint, everything. What I noticed is there is no plastic on this car. Maybe not much. Not like modern cars, even high dollar ones. They all have plastic, which can last awhile, but fades and warps with time, and will be hard to restore. Not to mention all the electronics. These must be hard to restore too, but it's all mechanical, and metal.

Hi Lou, I have been rather busy lately; but when I saw this video of the best Cadillac Eldorado ever manufactured, I could not resist commenting. This was the second year of the well proven 429 with ample power to push this vehicle on any turnpike. It was also the first year that GM introduced the telescopic steering wheel.Having all of the options this particular car offers, and with i`ts classic styling, next to the 57 and 58 Eldorado Brougham, I believe the 65 and 66 eldorado is the ultimate and final expression of GM quality and craftsmanship that in our life time we will never conceivably see again.

In addition to the 65 Eldorado, the 77 and 78 Eldorado although built on a front wheel drive platform, stills maintains some degree of classic elegance. As a limousine driver at Toronto Pearson Airport, I have driven many of the rear wheel drive Cadillac Brougham models from 86 through 92. These years of styling have have proven to exemplify the truly final phase of Cadillac`s quality of elegance and luxury appointments.

Thank you, Lou. I LOVE the '65. It has always been my favorite Cadillac. My Grandfather had a '65 Fleetwood, but by the time I was old enough to remember the car, he had given it to my Aunt to drive to school when she returned as an adult to get her Master's degree. He had replaced it with a '69 Fleetwood in Rampur Green, which always confused me because it was so dark that it looked black, but it wasn't sable black, while the interior was either charcoal gray or black. Fortunately the interior was cloth with the pinstripe design rather than a granny's brocade, or even leather. It did not need leather to be expensive and feel right. I didn't think the '69 had the same authoritarian looks of the '65, but I do remember the interior as absolutely "ginormous"! The front seats were absolutely huge, and as thick as a living room armchair. The rear had the longest amount of legroom, and of course the footrests! Unfortunately, the '65 met with its maker around 1977 when my cousins were out with it and she crashed it into a tree near their house. Each cousin blames the other, one for distracting her, and the other for being a bad driver. I blame them for wrecking something so magnificent that it should have been a very desireable family heirloom. Alas, the disposable product culture of today. The '65 was not a car that was cheap in any way, and this video (along with another drive along) somehow conveys how smooth and controlled these cars were. I think you capture the experience exactly in how this car makes the driver feel important and how classy (for my lack of a better term) it real is.

As a kid of about 17, I had a Firebird and my own apartment. A guy in the neighboring building had a '66 de Ville convertible EXACTLY like this one (not an Eldo). I literally COVETED that thing. I looked down from my third floor bedroom window right onto the Cadillac (I never liked the term "Caddy") and every time I saw that thing, I WANTED IT! One day I asked the guy "If you ever sell this, I would love to buy it!". He must have spoken to the wife about it because about a week later he told me he was ready to sell it. I BOUGHT IT ON THE SPOT. Owned it for several years. Several years later, I moved to a new apartment and traded the Firebird for a '72 Coupe de Ville. A beautiful silver blue, all white leather and white vinyl top. Red, white and blue. How American! My parents wanted to take a driving trip to Tennessee and asked if they could borrow one of my Cadillacs. I said "SURE". They offered to take "the old one". I said "NO WAY! You can take the new one. NOBODY drives my '66 convertible but ME!". lol Those were the days!!!!!!!!! Someone dropped a brick onto the passenger seat from an overpass when I had the top down and scared the you-know-what out of me!!!!!!!! That was one awesome machine! Blew the doors off Chargers of the day. Blew their mind! Memories!!!

Closest I ever got to a Cadillac was one I saw in a field which screamed "Get me!" back in 1984. I found the owner who wanted $50 for it. At the time I was taking automotive technology in junior college so I was able to make all the repairs. Once it was complete my wife at the time compelled me to give it to her friends needing the car. Soon after she divorced me. If I knew that was going to happen I never would have gave up the car. It was a powder blue 1973 Eldorado with a 550 cu engine. Sure had fun driving that car. My wife wasn't much fun though.

Traditionally the Eldorado models always had more bling than the DeVille, tons more chrome. So I never understood why the '65 & '66 DeVille had that gorgeous thick chrome over the doors that wrap to the B pillar but the Eldorado did not. I wonder if you could take those chrome pieces from the DeVille and put them on the Eldorado but I think it might have a longer wheelbase and door length.
