Oh, yes. It was a gorgeous, deep blue. The upholstery was lighter blue and white. My mother had a 1958 Buick Roadmaster, white, with light blue interior, and I remember that the seat fabric was similar, but more plush. By the way, her Buick also had the air suspension, but my parents had it converted to springs. Another rich neighbor had a creme-colored 1957 Lincoln Premiere with white and turquoise interior and a continental kit. It also had AC, with the scoops and the plastic tubes, which fascinated me. Engineered and marketed by General Motors to "outclass" the 1956 and 1957 Continental Mark II, the 1957 Eldorado Brougham was the "halo car of GM", weighed 5,315 pounds, and cost a staggering (for the time) $13,074 (about the cost of a decent middle-class home in the late 1950s). Basic styling was derived from GM's own Park Avenue and Orleans show cars of 1953/1954. Exterior paint choices were extensive along with 44 interior upholstery trim combinations, and carpeting was either Mouton (lamb pelt) or Karakul (sheep wool). Standard equipment included air suspension, "thin whitewalls", automatic trunk lid opener, automatic "memory seat", Cruise Control, electric antenna, electric door locks, air conditioning, Autronic eye, etc. The atomizer contained Lanvin Arpege perfume (expensive French perfume). There were no options as the car was considered fully equipped...buyers only chose exterior paint and interior trim. Production was 400 units in 1957 and 304 units for the similar 1958 model. These 1957 and 1958 models were built in Detroit, but the heavily redone 1959 and 1960 Eldorado Broughams were instead hand built by Pininfarina in Italy. Retail prices stayed constant at around $13,000 for the four model years. GM lost $3,000 for every Eldorado Brougham that was built...FoMoCo lost $1,000 for every Continental Mark II that was built.
@@acts2211 Thank you. My resources state a figure of $10,000...perhaps a similar Bentley was around $9,000. The U.S. Dollar at that time had a much higher foreign exchange rate!
I think that the only "option" was a choice of two different kinds of actual sheep hide carpeting... Something like karakul curly lamb or fuzzy sheepskin... Everything else was "standard".... Ought to have been for almost Fourteen Grand!
@@slicksnewonenow Mouton is from a lamb pelt and Karakul is the wool from sheep, both exotic materials. The Eldorado Brougham had no options that cost extra. Customers still selected the exterior paint color, seat upholstery, and one of two carpets. Supposedly about 50 percent of the 1957/1958 models had either white or black paint.
Cool car! If I'd been willing to spend the cost of a nice home in 1957, I think I'd probably go with the Mark II, 'cause the Rolls-Royce still had the ancient though smooth straight six, a crude form of power steering was finally installed and a very rudimentary air conditioner. The M-B 300 sedan was very underpowered with no power steering, no automatic and no air conditioning. The Jaguar sedan had enough power but again, no air conditioning and heaven help you if you broke down outside the few major cities. This one is a real beauty, and many thanks to the gentleman for sharing it with us!

Elvis had a couple Cadillacs by 1957, but this one might have been even too expensive for him….. regular deVilles, Eldorados, and Fleetwoods were in the $4500-$6k price range in 1957. This particular Eldorado Brougham was $13,000. The equivalent of $130,000 today. And with only 250 made for the entire year you needed to get on the ordering list early.

Yes these were a bit on the smaller side compared to a traditional Cadillac. They were almost 3 inches narrower than a deVille or Fleetwood at the time. The back seat gets tight fast if you move the front seat back.
Una cosa si yo con el Impala hice 40 km con un vaso de Coca, sin que se derramará, con el Caddy estoy seguro que se podía disfrutar de un trago sin problemas de derrames
@@brucegwynn8509 Sorry Bruce, If I did 40Km with my Impala with a glass of Coke without spilling a drop, with the Caddy it is possible to have a drink without spilling a drop.
Love this guy how he is the President of the Cadillac club and appears to be a Star Trek fan. Was very funny, him and Lou yucking it up over crazy people in the parking lot
Jack Benny used to drive one of those - not sure whether or not Benny's was invisible ;-). The suicide doors make it a unique model among other 1950's Cadillacs. I seem to remember hearing that that model sold for about $10k, a lot of money for a car back then. The battery in the trunk is also unique - no doubt not enough room under the hood with the brake power assist and A/C compressor. Enjoyed the owner's great sense of humor.
What an incredible car. I had seen photos of the 1957 Eldorado in the past but never a video. Good things came from the year 1957. I must have been fun being at the Cadillac Nationals. 😁As always, thanks so much Lou 👍
People know me as a car guy. When they innocently ask what my favorite car is, expecting Corvette or Mustang because that's all they know, I say Eldorado Brougham...they stare blankly because they have no idea what that is. What it is, is, peak American style, performance, luxury, technology, and amazing exclusivity. I have a '58 Fleetwood which is awesome, but the Brougham is a whole 'nother level
Thanks for bringing us this amazing car. People lived good back in the day and the amenities of this car proved that. Great video Lou and thanks again!
Lou!!! This car is beautiful. You do the most awesome videos on these vintage automobiles! I've actually learned a great deal from your videos. Awesome work my friend! Keep em going!
I was lucky enough to work on a few of these and several other 50’s Cadillac’s during the 70’s at the Premier Cadillac dealer in the Detroit area. These were incredible and the first and last time American Domestics were just that. Beautiful! And the bar!
James, no sir, it wouldn't go over today. It's truly a shame that unique and elegant style is hard to come by in the automotive industry. Ed Glowacke designed this car, in the Harley Earl days of General Motors.
A very nice presentation greatly enhance by the comments of a owner who actually knew what he was was talking about and also was familiar whit the history of the car.
If I were one of the cars that just pulled out before you, I would've stopped and stared. What a beautiful car to say the least. They were called suicide doors in America, and Coach doors in England. Make no mistake, this Cadillac at that time was more expensive than a Rolls Royce.
Love that color, and those Dagmars! So named after a buxom '50's actress. The 4 headlight thing is weird. Depending what state they were sold in Mercury's had 2 or 4 headlights. It crazy to think states thought 4 headlights were dangerous. By '58 the goverment stepped in and mandated all cars have 4 headlights. Could you imagine cleaning all that gingerbread and that roof, ugh. Only GM car with suicide doors. It certainly is a time capsule, when bigger was better and gas was less than a dollar a gallon. Wished it hadn't rained that day, when are you gonna have a chance to see hundreds of Cadillac's? Thanks for showing it Lou.
@@richardrice8076 It was styling trends that led to four headlights...later square headlights...later composite headlights. The federal government changed the laws for accommodation.
This Caddy is beyond cool. Lou, if this and other great examples you've exhibited from the 50's-early 60's isn't a clue as to how great this country's car industry was, then you just don't get it. Too cool for the room!! 😎😎
This car was so far ahead of its time. GM threw the kitchen sink of every bit of tech and design they had in 1957 at it. You might not have realized when you were looking at the power seat controls on the door it actually has two position memory!! In 1957, long before computer memory that modern cars use!! This car stickered for $13,000 at a time when a fully loaded 1957 Chevy Bel Air with air conditioning was $2800!!! And GM still lost money on every one they sold!!

Power seats with memory positions did not reappear until the early 1980s. The air suspension was perhaps the only truly unreliable feature. Two separate 1957 Cadillac 60 Special sedans with options equaled the cost of a single 1957 Eldorado Brougham.
Lou, Thanks for showing this magnificent car!! I have seen 5 or 6 of these personally. There were quite a few of these imported into Australia in the 1980s when they were very cheap. I'm sure those are all worth a pretty penny now!!

Harley Earl built a black prototype El Dorado Brougham concept car in Town Car body style for the 1956 GM Motorama. The prototype was sent to Warhoops salvage yard to be scrapped in 1958 but they put it away in storage for 40 years until classic concept car collector Joe Bortz acquired it and restored it in 1998.

Hi Bruce, High praise :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome, Lou
@@juanasanelli6831 I can't speak or read any language but English
@@brucegwynn8509 Sorry Bruce, If I did 40Km with my Impala with a glass of Coke without spilling a drop, with the Caddy it is possible to have a drink without spilling a drop.
That car is a factory custom built car by Fleetwood! Love the color combo! Thanks Lou👍
Hi Don's Hot Rod Garage, Thank you for sharing and happy to read you "Love that color combo!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Fantastic car. I have never seen one in turquoise before. Glenn is a hoot.
Hi Daniel, Happy to read you enjoy this "Fantastic car" :-) I agree, Glenn is FUN! Lou
Love this guy how he is the President of the Cadillac club and appears to be a Star Trek fan. Was very funny, him and Lou yucking it up over crazy people in the parking lot
Happy to have you along for this ride Sabba_Dabba :-) Lou
This car is very close to being an orginal survivor. ..Honestly in my book it is! Great car..great video. Thanks for posting. Have a blessed day!
Hi Gerry, Happy to read you enjoy this "great car" :-) Thank you for the kind words on the video. Blessings received. God bless you too, Lou
@@loucostabile Thanks Lou!!
a masterpiece for sure
High praise :-)
Jack Benny used to drive one of those - not sure whether or not Benny's was invisible ;-). The suicide doors make it a unique model among other 1950's Cadillacs. I seem to remember hearing that that model sold for about $10k, a lot of money for a car back then. The battery in the trunk is also unique - no doubt not enough room under the hood with the brake power assist and A/C compressor. Enjoyed the owner's great sense of humor.
Hi UCan CallMeRay, Happy to read you enjoy the humor :-) Glad there were no incidents, or dents from this invisible Cadillac :-) Lou
What an incredible car. I had seen photos of the 1957 Eldorado in the past but never a video. Good things came from the year 1957. I must have been fun being at the Cadillac Nationals. 😁As always, thanks so much Lou 👍
Hi Mike YQR, High praise :-) The show was fun, and stay tuned there will be a few more videos from the show. You're welcome, Lou
Hi Steve S, Happy to read this is your favorite :-) Glad to read you have a great car too, Lou
Just AWESOME!
Hi Bob, High praise :-) Lou
Thanks for bringing us this amazing car. People lived good back in the day and the amenities of this car proved that. Great video Lou and thanks again!

Wiiam!!! Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car. I appreciate your kind words on the video, Thank you, Lou
I was lucky enough to work on a few of these and several other 50’s Cadillac’s during the 70’s at the Premier Cadillac dealer in the Detroit area. These were incredible and the first and last time American Domestics were just that. Beautiful!
And the bar!
Hi Doug, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the cars you worked on :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Like my dad often said about people who pull out in front of him: "They must trust my brakes more than I do."
Nice !
Incredible find ,a old boss yrs ago had a 1957 2 dr Cadillac but single headlights ,Interesting Car and love the Blue.
Hi Tim C, Glad to read you enjoy this find. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Boss's car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
The dual headlights, the chrome around them, and the tail fin style were the same on the following year's standard Cadillac models.

What a truly amazing car, definitely elegant, and a wet bar! That would not go over today, would it?
Hi James, Happy to read "What a truly amazing car" :-) No, the shot glasses would not work today, Lou
James, no sir, it wouldn't go over today. It's truly a shame that unique and elegant style is hard to come by in the automotive industry. Ed Glowacke designed this car, in the Harley Earl days of General Motors.
No. Too much gas. Who could afford it?
A very nice presentation greatly enhance by the comments of a owner who actually knew what he was was talking about and also was familiar whit the history of the car.
Happy to read you enjoy this presentation :-)
One of my All Time Favorites. A Great Review too 👍
Happy to read this car is a favorite of yours :-) Thank you for the kind words on the review. My pleasure sharing with you.
Like a modern Rolls Royce Phantom with all the fancy accoutrements.

Phenomenal vehicle! Gorgeous and rare, love 50's Caddys and this particular color! Great job capturing and sharing this one!
High praise :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you.
Cool car - any car from the 50's is a classic ride from Detroit. 😎
Nice !
If I were one of the cars that just pulled out before you, I would've stopped and stared. What a beautiful car
to say the least. They were called suicide doors in America, and Coach doors in England. Make no mistake, this
Cadillac at that time was more expensive than a Rolls Royce.
Hi Michael, Happy to read you'd be starring at this one :-) Me too, Lou
Unbelievable technology. Nice car. Thank you Lou.
Hi Rajeewa, Thanks for sharing you appreciate the technology with this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
That's one you don't see often. And small wonder. They were over $13,000 when you could drive a new Fairlane home for two grand. BEAUTIFUL!!
Hi JWelchon, Happy to read you think this car is "BEAUTIFUL!" :-) You're right, you don't see this car often, Lou
A man’s man and a ride fit for for him.
Hi Paul, NICE! Lou
Very cool '57! Love to see the unique features it has. The green reminds me of my Buick.
Hi eldo59, Happy to read you enjoy this "Very cool 57!" :-) Lou
HI Richard, Happy to read the details you notice and enjoy :-) My pleasure sharing this car. You're welcome, Lou
I don't think the government ever mandated four headlights...because the 1960 Falcon, 1962 Chevy II, Beetle, etc. still had two headlights.
@@SpockvsMcCoy I googled it. Starting in 1958 it became legal to sell cars with 4 headlights. So my bad and thank you for pointing the error of ways

Lou thx so much, amazing car and..color.👏
Hi MegaWhitemaster, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) You're welcome, Lou

“Take that, new Lincoln.” Bwahahahaha! 🤣😂
:-)
Hi Lou, beautiful car in a great color. A dream car for sure. Glen is a lucky guy. Thanks for sharing. 👍☺️

Lou, Thanks for showing this magnificent car!! I have seen 5 or 6 of these personally. There were quite a few of these imported into Australia in the 1980s when they were very cheap. I'm sure those are all worth a pretty penny now!!

fabulous car !! where I grew up, a family up the street had one. so they drove by our house many times in a day. They evidently had some money as they gave it to the teenage son when he turned 16.

One of Harley Earl's greatest cars. He was Chief of Styling and Design at GM's Cadillac division from 1927 to 1960.
Hi Dejael, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Harley Earl built a black prototype El Dorado Brougham concept car in Town Car body style for the 1956 GM Motorama. The prototype was sent to Warhoops salvage yard to be scrapped in 1958 but they put it away in storage for 40 years until classic concept car collector Joe Bortz acquired it and restored it in 1998.
That’s an awesome & classy car!😎
