The gray version could also double as the earliest version of a matrix-less Optimus prime.
I impulsed the 2011 Chronicle set at a Korean hobby shop, and it's nice to have the Autobot symbols tampographed instead of stickers and onboard weapon storage.
Should be mentioned that the designer of the original Convoy is Shōji Kawamori, who is an extremely prolific designer (among other things). He's responsible for the Variable Fighters in Macross, the GP01 and GP02 from Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, and he also worked on Armored Core, Escaflowne, Euraka Seven, Outlaw Star, and tons more. Without him, Transformers as we know it would not exist.
I do remember seeing sunshine magnus at a convention and was baffled, but the blue Diaclone like one is cool.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they did a “86 movie” colored, no stickers version for Walmart.
There’s almost nothing to do with the paint job to change him from the original toy, but if for that reason alone, you’re right, he’ll probably see an 86’ Movie Release… probably just the cab unless they do a higher price point in the future.

Dark of the Moon Year of the Dragon Optimus Prime is freaking cool. You should review. They took the concept and made him red and gold, a bit like the last one here, and also blue highlights and grey.
G1 Prime is truly a solid toy. Even without the whole brand behind him, you could stick it on a toy store shelf and people would still buy it.
Kind of surprised I haven't seen a lot of "modern" upgrade pieces for him to give him an articulated head and hands and such.
I managed to get a couple of the 2007 Pepsi Optimus from the movie giveaway. I was working at a grocery store, and the bottle room guy was on hiatus, many of those codes went uncollected prior.
Not gonna lie, Pepsi Prime is on my list of figures to hunt down sooner or later
according to The Toys that Made Us, Optimus Prime was the first one given his name when the license was acquired by Hasbro. so technically, he WAS the first Transformer as we know him.

I was looking for an original G1 Optimus Prime to purchase on Ebay. I noticed that the range in prices were all over. This video helped me identify the different features of Optimus and understand what I was looking at. Thank You TJ
My favorite G1 Optimus Prime is the later Takara reissue where they started using tampographs for the shoulder logos. Though, they were still using silver stickers for the silver stripe on his chest and arms. Would love a Takara reissue version with tampograph shoulder logos, and painted silver stripe.
I did also pick up the Takara Missing Link version with trailer as well. Does bum me out that you can shoot roller out of the cab. Will pick up the Missing Link Bumblebee. Though wish they did a version with the cartoon style head like the more recent reissues.
Pepsi Prime was featured on the Phelan Porteus reviews channel. It's quite funny. In a robotic voice, he says, 'And now, how about a ice cold refreshing Pepsi'. Lol. Liked the idea but never got one.
Very pedantic correction. The original Diaclone version of Optimus Prime was called Battle Convoy. Like a truck and trailer convoy, but one you could use for battle instead of just hauling freight.
Bathing Ape grey Optimus could pass as a sort of throwback to Primal.

10:25 I remember someone i knew was going to japan and told him to get that toy for me, so my 1st Japanese issue, bought few other Japanese reissues over the 2000s Sixshot, G1 Megs The TF collection.
You forgot to mention that IPod G1 coloured Convoy was also the G1 Optimus Prime used on a variant cover to Transformers: Death of Optimus Prime one-shot by IDW.
Fun facts: G1 toy Optimus Prime was originally known as Diaclone Battle Convoy. In the G1 cartoon, G1 cartoon Optimus Prime was originally known as Orion Pax. And in the Japanese versions of the Transformers G1 cartoon and the Japanese Transformers G1 toyline, G1 toy Optimus Prime and G1 cartoon Optimus Prime are both known as Convoy in Japan.
I wonder how Missing Link Optimus Prime would fit in this list! I definitely think it belongs!

I actually like the iPod and Pepsi ones. I mean, if you're going to sell out, may as well sell all the way out and have some fun with it. A logo is whatever, but incorporating the brand into the toy's functionality? That's fun!

Thank goodness the 2019/ 2022 reissue of prime got rid of the stupid shorter smoke stacks. It’s also kind of nice that the short smokestack trend is starting to fade as a couple of modern primes like SS38 and SS102 have long smokestacks.
I got a dark blue g1 optimus prime from the 1980ies, it was made in italy or finland, dont remember and ended up in low price store in sweden together with a red tracks, blue hoist and blue trailbreaker

I have one of the cheapened lighter aqua no color blue head Ultra Magnus toys. They also did a green one.
Okay, I hate to be *that* guy...but this issue kinda bugs me, and I felt like I had to point it out.
At 14:32, he calls the Optimus reissue on screen the Soshireikan release, and that ain't the case. That's the Transformers: Chronicle 2011 release which, as TJ mentioned, came with a DOTM Deluxe Class Optimus Prime. They also did a Chronicle set for G1 Megatron and DOTM Voyager Class Megatron.
The next figure he brings up (the one that's essentially the Japanese release of the Walmart-exclusive Vintage G1 figure) is the Soshireikan release.
Again, sorry if that was unnecessary, but I felt it needed to be pointed out. Keep up the great work, TJ!

That last one looks more like Optimus Prime in Ironhide's colour scheme.
Since Hasbro will keep remaking the G1 Optimus mold. I wish they'd just recreate the G1 Dinobots and finally give you reissues. We haven't had a proper G1 Dinobot reissue since G2. Really hate having to rely on 3rd party as the joints are either really loose or really tight. Though at least 3rd party has maintained metal parts and the plastic still feels like 80's plastic.
Do wonder when someone in Takara get idea to give this mold much proper Nemesis Prime deco since early mentioned black is more of stealth deco.

I would consider another spot: the italian releases of optimus and magnus. In Italy, at the time, optimus was called Commander, so it released first as an unlicenced line called trasformer, not Transformers, then, after getting the licence, it was released as "Transformers Autorobot Commander". Same with magnus, who was called Convoy (and the first time he released, in the unlicenced line, he had Delta Magnus colors!)
I had the 2008 version and in the Philippines, we referred to it as Pinkimus Prime because of the pale red coloring.
I wanted to pick up a G1 Prime reissue. But Walmart wanted to charge 75 dollars Canadian (Without the trailer mind you)

The main problem with the 2019 reissue is that over a short span of time the legs wear out and barely stay in place for robot mode and fold back too easily.

I think the two "essential" grails for TF collectors are G1 Optimus and Megatron, the original leaders.
Prime is relatively easy, Megatron on the other hand ... I'm lucky to have lol.

Can't imagine any use for a gold plastic plated Transformer. You can't play with it. If you display it, it's going to get dust one it, unless it's in a case, and it's going to flake off. So not worth it.
