- In this episode, we unbox and review the Optimus Prime Autobot leader available through TEMU to see how does this reprint and knockoff measure up? Let's find out.
I have been a fan of the Transformers since the first three-part mini-series, More than Meets the Eye. I loved everything about it, the fact that they were giant robots, the fact that they transformed, the fact that Optimus Prime had the coolest voice ever, and yet strangely similar to the narrator from Voltron. Anyways, I had a ton of Transformers toys when I was a kid, but the one my parents never quite hooked me up with was an OptimusPrime figure. Recently, I've seen ads pop up on my feed for TEMU and their transforming toys. One of them looked to be a spot-on replica of Optimus Prime, and after I got a coupon that would bring him down to only $32 I decided to take the plunge.
Shipping wasn't terrible, about 2 weeks. And let me be clear here, while I bought through TEMU, it was a third-party reseller providing these, very similar to an eBay reseller. It was wrapped in an orange and white TEMU bag, and overall very well packed.
When I open up the bag, the box art, the figure, everything pretty much blew me away. I know this is a knock-off, I know Takara and Hasbro are not reprinting this specific toy, but man this looked terrific. The one thing that threw me off a little bit was the box art on the bottom of the box looked very faded compared to the rest of the box. But everything was here, the window to view the figure, Optimus himself, the epic battle on the back of the box between the Autobots and the Decepticons, the tech specs were here, and it even had a Hasbro trademark logo!
Taking it out of the box, a few things were pretty obvious right away. The paint on the front of Optimus' chest did not quite match the red for the arms and the rest of his body. They were just a little bit off. Also, none of the details came pre-applied. I wasn't expecting that.
Going through and transforming Optimus for the very first time, everything went together smoothly until I got to his left arm and head. The left arm had a lot of slop in the shoulder joint, it just flopped around. Meanwhile, his head was the exact opposite, as it flipped around it got tighter and tighter. Things got worse in the parts fitment department when I went to attach Optimus' hands. The right hand was okay, but the left hand fell out extremely easily. Like I could not put Optimus' blaster in his left hand, the toy would just not hold his hand. That's a bummer.
Turning my attention to Roller and Optimus' trailer, this was much better. The command center transformed beautifully, and the spring mechanism to launch Roller was terrific. The rockets were there for the main module in the command center, however, the left rocket was considerably more difficult to insert than the right. Both fired as normal, however.
Why it RoX:
Only $32 after the coupon
Looks like new old stock
Decent shipping time
Dox art is spot on
What could be improved:
Fitment of the models pieces are not great
The reds do not match Optimus' body
Typos in the manual
Bottom of the box art looks faded
Makes me feel really old
Should you buy one?
At the full list price of over $60, this is a hard pass. With discounts, coupons, and promotions I was able to get this for about $30 and that's about the value of this. I have to figure out what I'm going to do with Prime's left hand, it just will not stay in place. And the rotation of the head I am hoping will free up over time. I'm looking forward to going through and applying the decals, and making Prime truly look like the supreme Autobot commander. I know this isn't a legit Hasbro or Takara re-release, and part of me doesn't care. But man, I'd love an original Optimus Prime again.

Still watch transformers with my kids from time to time on UA-cam
That's true!
@@RoXolid You can also watch the full movie too. The original one from the 80s. It’s like watching a music video. So awesome!
@@amolochitis30 I have it on Blu Ray
I'm a very big toy collector... Transformers, G.I.Joe, He-Man, Voltron and 80's in particular. These K.O.'s are the exact same figures. Made i. The same factories with the same molds..every once in a while the molds are secondary castings such as with the Mirage figure but they are the same.
Good to know! So does Takara not own the molds?
Back in the 80s, I used to go between Tulsa Oklahoma, Muskogee Oklahoma and Oklahoma City Oklahoma. In those three towns the most common prices for the original 84 Optimus Prime was $19.99. Or $24.99
I got mine for about 40 a couple weeks ago. The only issue with mine is that the left leg doesn't stay all the way vertical when in robot mode. But other than that, it's a pretty neat reproduction. And it's kinda cool to have a G1 Optimus Prime, even if it is a knockoff.
Same issue. One leg
Man, that ko version is better than the g1 version i had, my prime when i was a kid - i remember the spring was off and he would often not stay standing up right, back in the day I vaguely recall him costing over a 100 (nzd) i only started collecting again recently been trying to find a decent g1 (even if mp) prime with a trailer along with a g1 style megatron
I recall buying quite a few G1 Reissues from Toy’s R Us back in the early 2000’s. They were made from original molds and very heavy using die casting for bodies so exactly as the original G1’s from the 80’s. But yeah the hand falling off on this one is disappointing
Looks like it's a fine placeholder as a shelf piece for if you decide to get a legit Gen 1 down the road.
the eyes look like the paint artist was sleepy when applying em 😅
actually I did a little bit fix with the cab to make joint tighter and clicky, but the head looks really off and nothing like the og g1 head.
I’d pay $32 just for the box and trailer and that’s what I did and put the 2017 Walmart (cab only version) with it
I think he cut the prime hand joint to close. also you can beef up the hand with some hardening glue then let it dry completely building a layer over the plastic then u can put it on prime and it will make a tighter grip
I've just left him in truck mode, but I've also been thinking about just 3d printing some new hands
Less risk of damage with nail polish hardener.
for the loose fists I just covered the the posts of the fists with clear nail polish but just a little bit and the fit is more snug
Good call!!
Yeah I know I'm a bit late, but hey it's never too late to watch a video. As the reproduction of Optimus prime it has hiccups as I expect it from a toy perspective and for what it is it's pretty cool and for me at least after all Optimus prime was and still is my favorite autobot since childhood.
I always liked Ultra Magnus
I love you man. You don't condone piracy then buy something like this. You are a riot. 🤣🤣🤣
gary try some clear tape on the spokes of the hand pieces to thicken them. if you are ever going to display optimus in robot form.
i had this exact toy. the trailer and optimus, my parents took away the hands bc i eat them when i was a kid. i'm sure it was my brother's toy and i snagged it from him. i still have the original optimus prime figure, minus the hands, gun, roller, and trailer.
Clear nail polish at Dollar Tree fixes the costs staying in
I have this also and no problems at all hands are tight
Great video! God bless!
Thanks for watching!
Can u send a link cant find on temu
They have them on Temu again 45 bucks now.
I amherting the official hasbro 2019 reissue and probly later buy this for the trailer
Quality back in the originals 80's wasn't really all that great either. After two transforms, its joints would get looser and more loose every time... And most of the transformers that weren't taken care of by kids in the day got tossed in the trash. Thank goodness my son wasn't one of those kids. But his best friend, after 20 years, sold out from under him... sad, really. It was still mint condition, too.
I loved my transformers back in the day but never had prime or megatron
I bought a bunch of G1 reproductions from Temu. Metroplex, Devistator, Menasor, etc. I feel like all of them are smaller than the original G1 toys. But then again, "I" was much smaller back then, so maybe they are the same size. Can anyone confirm a size difference???
They got Devastator? Now I feel stupid for getting the one from Walmart for $80 when it was out 😂
@@lonewolf0712 yep. He's pretty close to G1 for a KO
@@ceptor73 I may get all the KO dinobots. That or I need to find Swoop, Sludge, and Snarl for combiner wars since I have grimlock and slag.
I have the 5 pack of dinobots in my wishlist.
I got the Studio Series Knockoff Optimus Prime. It was freaking badass. I bought 2 and I kept one as the Truck and one as The figure. I think it's great!
i got mine for$29 on ebay couple years back
An original? Wow! 😲
I think I paid $15 for that Optimus in 84
I bought Optimus prime on Temu for $43. My younger brother had Prime back in the 80's
I had Soundwave with the cassette, which is on Temu for $70. Is it worth it, because prime seems fake.
30 bucks seems okay for a reproduction shelf piece.
Yeah
Hasbro gets some cash for this and ok yhis
