    I have (what I believe to be) a ton of these in my yard. I must've planted them many years ago, back when I knew absolutely nothing about plants and just wanted some coverage. These are variegated, bloom yellow and white flowers, and are huge...taller than me. They are taking over an entire side of my house, along with some various alocasia, colocasia, Mexican petunia, and some sort of iris. I've never fertilized or watered like I should've been, but they pop back up every spring with a vengeance. Had no idea they could be used for shampoo! That's so awesome.

      Same with me. I bought a house couple years ago. I have these all over the yard. Hacked through them with the machete. 😂 Still have them coming back but think I let a bunch more stay. They are pretty and now I know a use I'll try it out.

    Looks like they're in the shade, does it need some sun or just plant in shady area. I'm in Houston Tx I think it's zone 9 also. Also can you just cover in winter with winter blankets?

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  4 місяці тому

      They grow best in a spot with bright morning sun and afternoon shade. If they constantly get full sun, the leaves turn yellow and burn. If your ground freezes, or its snows, it can kill the rhizome. I'm not familiar with putting blankets down, so not sure if that will be enough to protect the rhizomes in the ground.

    Hello from the Florida panhandle, zone 8b/9a! I planted this for the first time this year in a shady spot next to my house. The plant itself has grown huge and lush but no sign of flowers or pine ones yet. I’m wondering if the spot is too shaded. Do you have any advice for this? I planted it in a pot early in the spring and once it sprouted I transplanted it around May. We had a pretty cold spring up here this year.

    I have an area with poor drainage during heavy rains but will eventually drain. It's in the shade of a huge oak tree. During the summer this area does dry . I'm in zone 9 in Texas. Would this area be ok to transplant my shampoo ginger?

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  Рік тому

      Potentially. They like a period of dryness when they are dormant for the winter, followed by a period of lots of rain which occurs for me during the summer here in Florida. They are in their active growing stage during the summer so the extra water helps. My patch does get afternoon shade.

  • @melodyhallock6400
    @melodyhallock6400 2 роки тому

    I live in Central Florida. I planted my plant in a pot because the seller never sent me instructions. It's in partial sun but still seems like it wants more shade. So far it's grown nothing but leaves and this is the first year. Do you think if I put it in the ground in a more shady spot that it will do better?

    • @JerrasGarden
      @JerrasGarden  2 роки тому

      If it looks kind of yellow, then it needs more shade. Mine are in a spot with bright morning sun and full afternoon shade. Since you are in FL, you can safely plant it in the ground. I'm in Orlando FL, mine flourish in our regular native sandy soil.

      I would not put it in the shower, or at least where it will get wet all the time. Its best to let the soil dry out in between watering. Its ready to be transplanted once the root system takes over the whole pot.
