LYRICS:
In my early years i hid my tears
And passed my days alone
Adrift on an ocean of loneliness
My dreams like nets were thrown
To catch the love that I'd heard of
In books and films and songs
Now there's a world of illusion and fantasy
In the place where the real world belongs
Still i look for the beauty in songs
To fill my head and lead me on
Though my dreams have come up torn and empty
As many times as love has come and gone
To those gentle ones my memory runs
To the laughter we shared at the meals
I filled their kitchens and living rooms
With my schemes and my broken wheels
It was never clear how far or near
The gates to my citadel lay
They were cutting from stone some dreams of their own
But they listened to mine anyway
I'm not sure what i'm trying to say
It could be i've lost my way
Though i keep a watch over the distance
Heaven's no closer than it was yesterday
And the angels are older
They know not to wait up for the sun
They look over my shoulder
At the maps and the drawings of the journey I've begun
Now the distance leads me farther on
Though the reasons i once had are gone
I keep thinking I'll find what I'm looking for
In the sand beneath the dawn
But the angels are older
They can see that the sun's setting fast
They look over my shoulder
At the vision of paradise contained in the light of the past
And they lay down behind me
To sleep beside the road till the morning has come
Where they know they will find me
With my maps and my faith in the distance
Moving farther on

Now im 67....time trippin back to my high school years. Always a sad/happy person, well now Im sad most days, longing for a simpler time. Sobered up 30 years ago trying to save a marriage, realizing I was a terrible everything. Marriage gone, never remarried. Pining away in my little room I saw this video, and here is this old fart singing the songs of my soul. He was the most handsome young man back then. The most amazing bands around him. He has aged well and the voice of another time still rich and clear. Yes I cried listening, realizing I had also been a handsome young man that had to good fortune to be young during the greatest of musical times. Thanks for still singing the songs of my soul. Namaste Friend(s)
The genius of Jackson is that wrote a song at 25 that sounds more appropriate for him to singing when he’s in his 70’s. He’s now farther on. Just beautiful.
Thank you Jackson for breathing life into this beautiful ode to life. Again, you floor me with the emotional touch. I saw you in Dallas, July 2023. Thank you, sir. It was a lovely night of you giving us a part of you. 💞👱♀️🎶
This song, with is angels, have been looking over my shoulder for the past 40 years. I Will always be grateful to you, Jackson
The emotion this song generates is staggering. One of the best ever. By anyone.
I agree so much with you. I listened to it today riding to do an errand and just started weeping ❤
Yeah i agree. For reasons unknown i cry
❤
I agree. Jackson never fails to captivate.
Totally agree! Brings me to tears
Greg Leisz. Right behind Jackson. Perfection. The elegant, indescribable beauty. Good Lord, the majesty of these two together is breathtaking.
This is one of those songs that you hear differently when you are older than when you are young- a lot of decades between from when I first heard it. It’s more meaningful if that could be possible! A masterpiece 🙌
Thanks for taking out time to comment, I can't return all the love...
Where are you from?
Most of his songs are the same way.
Since I was a kid I listened to Jackson Browne. His music has brought such joy to my life. I am forever thankful.
In this song Jackson has captured the human experience- wrapped in hopes and dreams and disappointment and loneliness but clinging to the belief to never give up because the answer may be just around the corner. This is brilliance beyond words:)
When people in the world argue against the existence of God, here is the type of evidence that I point to, to show how mortality can only pierce the soul like this with His gifting help...
Who knows humans and their hearts better than their Maker?
I amazed that he could write such deep poetic music when he was still so young. It's mind boggling.
One can only write such inspired music by (knowingly or unknowingly) channeling spirit. All of the greatest musicians have always been ‘inspired’ JB even more closely connected. 🌹
@@CK-831 Amen!
More real evidence of ancient prophecy being fulfilled, i.e. “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions." Joel 2: 28
Right on! My friend would say "well alright" I love him
Words cannot describe how magnificent this song is, touching my heart again, as it did 46 years ago. Thank you, Jackson & Greg. Greetings from Scotland.
Thanks for taking out time to comment, I can't return all the love that's been showed to me through these comments ,Thanks for viewing🌹🌹...
Where are you from dear?
Hoping Jackson comes to Scotland soon
The world's greatest singer/songwriter.
Totally agree. His use of lyrics is masterful and his older songs are so bittersweet and beautiful they have nowhere to go but straight to your heart. My friend once told me that I love JB’s music so much because I recognize a truth when I hear it, and I totally get that. (I sound like such a Valley girl, and that’s a truth, because I am!)
BTW Jackson if you actually read these comments, I’m going to offer my unsolicited opinion. I miss your trademark hairstyle. I have always loved it💖
I love his music dearly, but I’ll bet if you ask him he’ll say “Joni”
If James Taylor is the world's heart, Jackson Browne is its soul. What a gift, in this year (almost) after the deluge, to see them together, with the greatest living musicians on the planet. We are so lucky.
I totally agree even better than Dylan with the writing and his voice is maybe better now as in 1972 when I first saw him..18 times over the years!
@@garylochbaum5253 At the very least he didn’t feel the need to contort his voice to get people to notice , like Dylan did. There are plenty of examples that show that Dylan had a fine voice. Start with Johnny Cash’s TV show.
Jackson’s voice is just fine the it was and the way it is. No pretense or ostentation in his voice. Thank you Jackson. And by the way, on this point, has anyone tried to find out why at times Bruce Springsteen wanted to purposely sound like a country bumpkin , especially from New Jersey? I don’t get it and I don’t like it. This is apart from his songwriting. Just his singing abilities.
What can I say, Jackson....If it weren't for you and Dan Fogelberg, CSN, Joni Mitchell, Linda, Ronstadt, Neil Young, Tom Petty and Cat Stevens, I wouldn't have known your souls. We are all thankful that we can go to our graves, having known your genius and heart. I love you! Thank you for so much enrichment.....Charleen.
And Van Morrison....Beautiful music from Jackson, Dan, and Van. I don't need anyone else
And Mr. Warren Zevon
Jackson, in case you’re listening: your voice sounds better here than it did in 1975. And this rendition of the song is better than the album version.

This one speaks to my heart the older I get. I’m moving farther on. Ahh so good
Nobody writes such beauty anymore, nobody sings it like it meant to be like JB!
I had to do enough in this life to earn having a man who looks like you beside me as the angels look over my shoulder and I listen to you sing. And I can cry if I want to. You've made the road so much better. Love and light to you, Jackson. From one still dancing.
Jackson, I’ve no idea if you’ll see this or not, but if the Universe sees fit, I’ve no doubt you will.
It’s difficult for me to put into words how much your music has meant to me through the years , both good times and your songs that have seen me through the most difficult. However, Farther On means the most to me, as it brings back so many memories of my son Timothy O’Patrick. 14 yrs ago, he passed away at 19 from an accidental od. Your song Farther On brings back so many memories of a talented bright young man just about to set out into the world.
I want you to know how much comfort & hope this song gives me. Thank you sharing it with the world.
I honor, love & respect you,Jackson Browne! I’m so blessed I got to see you in St. Louis a few years back. It’s a memory I deeply cherish. God bless, brother and keep fighting the good fight! With heartfelt gratitude & peace ~BellaDJ/Mid Missouri 🍀💕🌎
Listened to You from the UK. for more than 50 years .... Are ''We'' really that old. lol Love You Jackson .....
It dosent get better than hearing JB songs, these at home songs are so personal, we feel like we are sitting in his living room with him!
Damn it, I can't shake this fascination with Jackson. Beautiful soul, a heart for the environment, sense of humor, and handsome to boot. He can't be perfect, probably doesn't make his bed, or, leaves the can at the end of the driveway all week. LOL.

No contest.😊

You can’t beat class, the guy is full of class
I have no words that can express what I feel about this song and Jackson.......and Greg's amazing part also. I am 68 and have loved music my whole life, and followed it very closely since I was a kid. I know this is just one person's opinion, but I think Jackson is the greatest writer of lyrics in the Rock Era. Whoever is 2nd is a LONG way behind him! I love his music, and one reasons is because of his incredible lyrics. I have been blessed to seee him in concert 2 times........once when he was by himself, and once with his band. I've been to quite a lot of concerts in 68 years, and his solo acoustic concert was the best one that i have EVER been to! AMAZING! He put his heart and soul into every song. Thank you Jackson, for sharing your talent with the rest of the world. We are better people because of you!
Thank you for remembering the great, immense, Al Schmitt.
Every songs from "Late For The Sky” is a masterpiece.
Written by an "old soul," could've been written yesterday. So much more meaning, it seems ,now, at this age. RIP to your friend.
Yes, as was "These Days" when he was 16!!!
the greatest songwriter of the millenium.
I hope to one day meet you, shake your hand and thank you from the bottom of my heart for writing this song.
Jackson Browne...what can you say...his songs are the soundtrack to my life. The joy of seeing him multiple times in concert from the 70's and on!!! Love you man!
Nobody can write better then Jackson. Just wish he wouldn't talk.

It's like god inviting us to a concert of Jackson Browne in heaven. much better
They don’t make em like this anymore... First of all, let me just say how amazing his voice still is. A little more grit to it, sure, but no less heart and soul. Greg is a monster player, yet he doesn’t overwhelm the key vocal runs in this tune. And the song itself is just amazing. A masterpiece within a masterpiece. Jackson is truly one of the greatest to ever do what he does!
Jackson Browne - decades of bringing beauty to this world and still going strong...beautiful soul. Beautiful music.Thank you.
"Now there's a world of illusion and fantasy / In the place where the real world belongs" -- who could have known all those years ago how these lines would perfectly sum up life in the social media crazed world of the 21st century.
So glad to know REAL musicians are still around these days
I keep thinking ill find what im looking for, and I can see that the sun's setting fast. What a lyric and so profound. I'm 70 now and this rings through of how i felt in my 20s. Even now, I still sometimes wonder if i ever really found what i was looking, with the sun setting ever so fast
When I heard Late for the Sky, it completely blew me away. It is a masterpiece, without hyperbole. To me it feels like...touching eternity. This is a great performance. Jackson still sounds great.
Best album ever ... if it's allreet with Magritte.
A timeless classic. This guy never gives anything but 100% when performing. I saw him in Dublin and he sang each song as if it was studio dependent on a last take. Tangible performance. One of the most sincere songwriters of our time.
When ever he makes that last eye contact, I always find myself winking at him. Love you Jackson. 💓

I will never forget hearing this song for the first time. It was the moment when I knew I had to hear more from him. It was an awakening to many, many years of joy, tears and everything in between and feeling like someone really understood me. Thank you so much, Jackson. Listening to this today made my heart soar. 💞
damn, that he still has that voice...... washes away so many years. ....... magical
I lost my younger brother to a brain tumor, when he was 24, and I sat in a dark room and played this song over and over on a record player (circa 1981) and as difficult as that was (and still is) the line about "with my maps and my faith in the distance, moving farther on" helped me immensely.
The wording on this song is unbelievable and the line that "the angels are older" I take to mean that time passes but the memories have no time limit and simply stay the same forever.
I lost someone at that time as well, and played this over and over. It still hurts. I hope that you are doing well.
Jackson my friend.....a beautiful song, sung by a beautiful man.

This is one of my favorite songs by Jackson, and to be able to watch him play it and sing it after all these years is beyond words. He is beyond a genius, and I feel it an honor that I was here on this earth to hear it. Because in the future many will watch this video and weep at what the world has lost when this man is gone.
When you think of Jackson Browne’s age when he originally wrote this song, it makes it all the more amazing. The sagacity of the message is profound and he was far ahead of his time when he penned it. One of my Top Five favorites from his incredible catalog of music.
Jackson, thank you so much for your prose, your stories and your music. I'm from Aberdeen, Scotland and I've been listening to you since my mid teens, seeing you in Edinburgh in 1986. I play a bit of guitar and sing for fun, and your songs have been a huge inspiration to me and others for whom your music touches. My son is the latest to become afflicted by the Jackson Browne addiction and I'm so happy that future generations can see your work for what it really is. My favourites are For Everyman and Late For The Sky, like two favourite books and masterpieces, which I'll cherish until I pass. Best wishes to you.
❤️ youre playing my life Jackson Browne and nice to hear the honor for Al Schmitt and he sure did give his best and his all ...to his last drop.
No words for how much I love this. Tears flow. Joy and sorrow.
I have loved this man like a brother since the early 1970's. It still amazes me that he can continue to write great music and lyrics over such a long career. He has been with me when I have faced life problems (divorce, death of a loved one etc) and continues to be my guide. Being only three years apart in age makes it even more real for me, he feels like an elder brother that I have never met. Because I live in the UK, I have only managed to see him live a few times; and the world being as it is presently, it is unlikely that I will get another chance to soak up and bask in his music live again. Age has not dealt kindly to me, though I cannot grumble - there are people worse off than I, but creatively, Jackson has maintained his ability to give the world beautiful music, for which I give thanks. Anyone who can write a line "don't confront me with my failures, I have not forgotten them" at the age of 17 years is a genius. Never stop giving Jackson. Peace and love.
This song helped me in some of my darkest hours
Jackson, I wonder if that is your birth name, JB will go down in history in my book. He is a blessed story teller!

This is AMAZING!
I am a BIG Dave Lindley lap steel fan, but damn if Greg is not only matching him here, but even surpassing him with those riffs!!
The imagery and metaphors in this song's lyrics are like they are from another dimension or some higher plane of consciousness, and I doubt that they will ever be matched.

Genius. There’s only one Jackson Browne. Poet Laureate! His voice is as good as ever.

One of my favourites to be sure. Late for the Sky is a genius album, showcasing Mr. Brownes poetic acumen. Thank you for continuing to move us, Farther On.
I discovered Jackson's music when I bought "The Pretender" album circa 1977, I was 22 years old. It so captivated me that over the decades many, many JB albums have followed on into my collection, all continue to get regularly listened to and enjoyed. "Late For The Sky" was for me another outstanding collection of lyrics that continue to resonate to this day, in particular this track. 45 years Further On just hearing the intro makes me want to find a quiet place so I can just sit back and be moved once again by this song, I never tire of listening to it. Thanks Jackson for all the music, words will not be enough to convey my appreciation for all the music you have given us.
We are blessed to have you on this earth
I wish that I had known Jackson's music better, way back when. It touches me so deeply now.
