    LYRICS:
    Some of them were dreamers
And some of them were fools
Who were making plans and thinking of the future
With the energy of the innocent
    They were gathering the tools
They would need to make their journey back to nature
While the sand slipped through the opening
And their hands reached for the golden ring
    With their hearts they turned
To each other's hearts for refuge
In the troubled years that came before the deluge
    Some of them knew pleasure
And some of them knew pain
And for some of them it was only the moment that mattered
And on the brave and crazy wings of youth
They went flying around in the rain
And their feathers, once so fine grew torn and tattered
And in the end they traded their tired wings
For the resignation that living brings
And exchanged love's bright and fragile glow
For the glitter and the rouge
And in a moment they were swept before the deluge
Now let the music keep our spirits high
Let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky
    Some of them were angry
At the way the earth was abused
    By the men who learned
How to forge her beauty into power
And they struggled to protect her from them
    Only to be confused
By the magnitude of her fury in the final hour
And when the sand was gone and the time arrived
In the naked dawn only a few survived
And in attempts to understand a thing so
    Simple and so huge
Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge
Now let the music keep our spirits high
Let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
When the light that's lost within us reaches the sky

I took my 16 year old son to see his first Jackson Browne performance at the Beacon, NYC. He sat in the theater with a crowd averaging 50 - 75 years old. He sang every word to every song and turned around to me and said "thank you for being my dad", brought tears to my eyes and I realized I had raised him better than I could've imagined and on the music of Jackson Browne. Many years earlier (1986), I saw JB at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. I was trying to get into the backstage party, the security guys were roughing me up. Jackson was walking by and saw the ruckus, he stopped, reprimanded the security, took me and my girlfriend into the party, gave us beer and introduced us to Paul Rogers and Bad Company. We talked for a good while and had a lot of fun. A genuine, beautiful soul, poet and musical genius. Thank you for the tunes and the inspiration.

I was lucky enough to see JB at The Hammersmith Odeon in London a few decades ago then more recently at Birmingham Symphony Hall. He's just brilliant and I never ever tire of his soulful, insightful, beautiful lyrics and music. Thank you for giving and showing us so so much ❤️

That's a beautiful story. I saw him at the same theatre in 96 and even Jackson would admit that theatre was horrible! I wanted to see him so bad and I could hardly hear him. With that said, I had such a wonderful boyfriend who made it happen and I still have the tee shirt. Praise Jesus for good boyfriends! It was the only thing I ever wanted so it was still fabulous. I'd love to see him again.

After all these years, I remember this man, a poet together with his band. He was sharing his messages with a crowd of people in Bangor, Maine. In the throng, he somehow noticed my little one. Michelle was 3 years old, a tow head bouncing around in her cool jean overalls. Dancing. He asked me to bring her down & his eyes twinkled as she became a star and danced on his stage to the beautiful music he had created. Jackson Brown. What a wonderful, shining soul you have! A treasured memory from 1973 that I wanted to share. Thank-you!

I seen Jackson Browne with my ex-wife Portland Maine I was blown away before the Deluge was one of his many songs that he did that night best concert I was ever in in my life I went six more times after that one time in Philadelphia two nights in a row on the 7th concert my mother nicknamed me Jackson Browne because my last name is brown I'll never forget that now that she's with Jesus up in heaven I'm sure she still calls me Jackson I couldn't be more proud

It's funny, because this was released only 5 years after Woodstock actually happened, yet he was writing as if it were 50 years prior, such was the pace of changes back then (as well as now, I guess?).
Of course, being only 18 at that time, 5 years seemed like an eternity to me anyway.

I’ve often been moved to think that Jackson and his good friend Warren Zevon were aliens transported here from another time, such is the prescience of the lyrics of their songs. Perhaps there’s a simpler answer - that the words are timeless. I dunno. That’s what life’s for, right, to give us time to figure some small part of it out.

Jackson Browne's solo tour in 1998 or 99 was my 7 year old daughter's first concert in Asheville, NC in a very small setting. We were on the second row and he was about 10 feet away from us. She said, "Mama, that's THE Jackson Browne, right there." It just goes to show you can have a one man band and still kill it. We love his music. As soon as we'd get in our car to go on a road trip my son would say, "Doctor My Eyes!" and we'd put in the cd before we left the driveway.

I have been listening to this Jackson Browne song for the best part of my life. This recording with Val McCallum has got to be the best. Jackson's vocals have not lost the sincerity of his written words. Val's guitar mastery is unmatched. There are not too many musicians that sound as good or better than they did 50 years ago. Jackson Browne is one of them!

Ah, Jackson, we've grown older together. How reassuring tonight to be once again reminded of simpler truths...much like looking down at a lyrical compass. I've listened over the years, yet this evening's smile reflects a new joy: I am here because my 39 year-old son sent me. From hundreds of miles away he writes, "The good spirit is still here...let our feathers never grow torn and tattered!" and I know that some things turn out just fine.

@@sethcashman1011 I have said EXACTLY the same thing about Farther On for many years, Seth. I've always especially liked the "...my dreams like nets were thrown," line, which he then refers back to a little later on (just after the lines that Temporary Stranger quotes), and expands on the metaphor: "...though my dreams have come up torn and empty." I've been living with this music for decades, and it still moves me like it was new. I'm pretty sure it always will.

Apart from "Take it Easy" by the Eagles in 1972, this was the first Jackson Browne some I heard. It was playing on the PA at a Yes/Gryphon concert I attended at Newcastle City Hall in 1974. That same day, I'd read the Melody Maker review of the album ("Late for the Sky") and knew that I was listening to the song I'd read about that day. I went and bought the album and was hooked. Because I was so young when his first albums came out it’s been interesting to see how my understanding of the songs has changed as I have aged alongside them. I suspect his view of the world and his deep feeling music shaped part of my worldview and certainly my own quest for trying to understand the world and the emotions therein. I was that 5 or so year old trying to figure out the meaning of Fountain of Sorrow, spending hours thinking about it all.
