    LYRICS:
I'm going to rent myself a house
In the shade of the freeway
I’m going to pack my lunch in the morning
And go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I'll go on home and lay my body down
And when the morning light comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again
    Amen
I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
    Of some greater awakening
I've been aware of the time going by
They say, in the end it's the wink of an eye
And when the morning light comes streaming in
You'll get up and do it again
    Amen
Caught between the longing for love
And the struggle for the legal tender
Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring
And the junkman pounds his fender
Where the veterans dream of the fight
Fast asleep at the traffic light
And the children solemnly wait for the ice cream vendor
Out into the cool of the evening strolls the Pretender
He knows that all his hopes and dreams
    Begin and end there
Ah the laughter of the lovers as they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others but to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams sail out of sight
I'm going find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint by number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
    Get it up again
I'm going to be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Though true love could have been a contender
    Are you there?
Say a prayer for the Pretender
Who started out so young and strong
    Only to surrender

I was 15, just retired this year, seems like yesterday.....I wish we listened to the 'old fogies' back then that told us time flies. We thought we'd be young forever, bullet proof, no fear. Now, we're the 'old fogies' and I tell the young kids to live life, squeeze the juice out of it, because it really is gone in the blink of an eye. We get busy living life and forget to live life. Thanks JB.

I also started listening to this song in the '70s. I still have the album. I have always very much liked the song but always found the lyrics chilling because of "They say, in the end it's the wink of an eye" and "I'm going to be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender". I have frequently offered the same sentiment to my senior prom date (now wife), then today I see my name (minus 1 letter) speak of the same realization ( I also just retired). Thank you for posting John Eas_on

I’m… speechless, with the salty taste of my own tears. I’m 55 now, and was so young when I first heard this song; completely unaware of how much depth and complex meaning is within those lyrics. But today, it hit smack in the middle of my soul. Timeless, and even more beautiful today than it ever was. Thank you Jackson, for your incredible talent and musical gifts that you have shared with us all. 🙏 Much love and gratitude to you from me. ❤️

are you kidding? Nothing better than Jackson Browne that i have ever heard. sweet sultry tones, ivories making moods, and this man giving us ideas about street lights treating our eyes to a show? i never listened to what gave me instant satisfaction, but years that went, i have to defend this music. songs best written by those who know, give me a way to understand it.

I was 15 going on 16 when this song and album came out. 63 soon to be 64. I hope! I’m just blown away by Jackson’s talent and the depth of his music and lyrics, which I only more recently have come to appreciate. I was in our local bar and grille the other night and there was a female duo, two young ladies performing…and they played “Runnjng On Empty,” a song I’ve always loved, one of my favorites of his. I love when I get to play it in one of the bands I’ve played with for years now. And I sat there listening to the lyrics and thought, how did a man in his twenties write lyrics like that? With that much depth of insight into love and life…just incredible. I love this man and his music. ❤️ And being a Berklee graduate (Class of 1986) I can really appreciate this performance. It’s sublime.

    Mr Brown.
I want you to know sir that I am 56 years old ,I went to my first concert when I was 14 years old Reunion arena Dallas Texas it's not even there anymore You blew my mind! You still blow my mind today sir I thought then at age 14 after taking a couple of hits off of a funny cigarette while my dad's back was turned that you were a prophet I'm not smoking anything right now and I still believe you are a prophet the world's not ready for you man they weren't ready for Jesus either thank you for your life's work you've had one hell of an impact on me .I don't think I could have got this far without you and your music I'm not just rambling either I speak these words from my soul and the very core of my being. You have an unbelievable ability to put your feelings into words like no one else and believe me I've tried to find your equal there's not one ! I have a therapist and her name is music . I only wish I could look you in the eye and shake your hand, God bless you sir you will never die because your music will live on and in a hundred years from now when there won't be a soul on this planet who will remember my name will Know who You are because in a hundred years from now they may be ready for what you have to say peace brother.

Jackson is a poet extraordinaire with a vulnerability and honesty that our world will ALWAYS need. I was 25 when this song was released in 1976 and it struck me deeply, bringing to my awareness the many ways in which I had already compromised my goals and self-respect. I'm 72 now and writing poetry that reflects the incredible journeys our 'Baby-Boomer' generation . Jackson remains a powerful muse for me and a 'silent comrade' in the middle of the night when I am writing, crying and seeking comfort from the chaos and darkness of our world today. Thank you, Brother....you are deeply loved and cherished.

I love that line, too. I love the way it winds up too, especially the line, "where the ads take aim and lay their claim to the heart and the soul of the spender."
"Are you there? Say a prayer for the pretender,
Who started out so young and strong only to surrender."
This song just makes me die!

Jackson Browne, not only did I have the great pleasure of seeing you in 1981, but I also worked the show. I was a "House Roady" (stage tech.) for a college auditorium. The crew that wasn't working the show, itself, hung out in the cat walks and rafters. When you sang, Load Out, which you dedicated to us and looked right at us in the rafters we let out a scream that surprised the audience. Throughout the day, the question kept circulating, Does he really play his piano after the show? If so, how often? True to the legion, as we were doing Tear Down, you came out in a clean T-shirt and played for about 25 minutes. A thrill that still excites me 40 years later.
    Thank you.

"Caught between the longing for love and the struggle for the legal tender ... " ... just a year younger than Jackson .. his music has always been a part of my life and consciousness. All I can say is that it is not life that is short. Life is long. It is youth that is short, much much too short. And old age just goes on and on, how cruel ... because we remember so so clearly that sweet short youth. "Are you there ? Say a prayer for the pretender. Who started out so young and tender ... "

I was sixteen in 1974 when I tuned my radio in to my favorite Boston radio station. I heard a song that in many ways shaped my life moving forward. Fountain of Sorrow got me started as a young writer. Over the years there has been one constant: attend as many Jackson Browne concerts as possible. It’s been a pleasure listening to you and your work through the years. I’m 63 now, and though I left Boston long ago, I, my wife and our kids hope to see you at Blossom in Ohio this summer.

Man, oh man... This song has meant so much to me since I was a teenager. I'm 61 years old now. Thank you, Jackson. You probably don't remember me, but I produced your video for "For A Dancer" and this was absolutely one of the highlights of my producing career. To stand on the porch facing the street and have you breakdown the meaning of The Pretender (the corner where the children would wait for the ice cream vendor) for me was a thrill that I can't explain. I can't be sure, but I think you told me the housed we filmed at, belonged to your grandfather? Anyway, THANK YOU for being much kinder than myself and the entire crew could have hoped for. This song is one of my all time three or four favorite songs. Oh, I was the guy who gave you a ride home at 2:30am when we were done for the day, because you misplaced your keys and car service wouldn't have been there for over an hour. Obviously, this was before Uber or Lyft. JACKSON: THANK YOU- THANK YOU- THANK YOU. Your kindness and willingness to share your stories left a profound mark on me...
