Wow. A great version of a masterpiece. Raw and unfiltered; analog, not digital. I am so appreciative of his timeless talent. His music has not failed all these years to help move me farther on my journey.
Late for the sky is an album so pure, is a masterpiece an after 35 years sounds so clear and so beautiful. thank you Jackson for every single note of this gem.
My beautiful soulmate passed 6 years ago today and as he passed I played this song. Jackson was our favorite singer and we spent our years traveling to see him in concert. This song was our favorite, but as my love passed to it, the words took on all new and deeper meaning. It's a journey, and now he's moving farther on with the angels.
Thank you for sharing this. It paints such a beautiful picture of your life together. And Jackson's words paint a beautiful picture of hope. I'm so sorry for your loss. 💙
Perhaps the truest song ever written about being aware of one's human journey. The dreams of youth, tempered by the reality of existence, and aided by the love and support of others, are transformed into the embracing of one's "farther on", wherever it may lead. Beautiful!
+Michael Warren. I have been looking through every version on YT to find your comment. It is the best ever description of any Jackson song I know. Have been watching "Going Home" and this song brings a tear to my eye.
I was in Kathmandu in 1976. It was nighttime and we were looking for a restaurant in the old quarter called “ Monks Pleasure Palace”. It was known for hash cake and tea ( but that’s another story). We were lost in the dank dark alleys following an open sewer. Suddenly we went around a corner and in the distance we heard this song coming from a second story window covered with a light infused bed sheet. It was the restaurant. We ascended the stairs and opened a door and entered a room of wonder. People from many countries sitting on the floor and breaking bread (or cake) and listening to great music and laughter. This song always takes me there.
I'm soon to become 68 years of age. This artist has given me more pleasure than any other. My kidneys are failing and most of the time I don't feel much like shooting the breeze. But Jackson. From the deepest part of my ❤. Thank you for your blatant honesty and unforgettably beautiful lyrics. There is a female version of you and her name is Adele.
But the angels are older They can see that the sun's setting fast They look over my shoulder At the vision of paradise contained in the light of the past And they lay down behind me To sleep beside the road till the morning has come Where they know they will find me With my maps and my faith in the distance Moving farther on
Love Jackson Browne. I was introduced to his music when I was about 15 years old...and was hooked than...and hooked now. The best song writer ever, in my opinion!
It blows my mind how David Lindley is such a great musical talent. It goes without saying that Jackson is one of the great songwriters of my generation. My sisters turned me on to some wonderful stuff as I was growing up but I found Jackson on my own, perhaps that's why I feel so strongly about his music. Well that and the fact that he sings to my heart...Peace, ya'll. Love each other.
Years ago, when I was living in Detroit, The Pretender came on the radio. I actually called WABX to find out who it was. Saddest song I'd ever heard. This one tears me up even worse!
This album was a great healer for many people I worked with who had relational disappointments and divorce. I remember them playing these songs all the time.
every word that Jackson sings has sooo much meaning. I think he is here on Earth to teach all of us the meaning of life. Thanks JB, i will continue to look for the beauty in song!!
I bought this album not long after it came out and I was so amazed at the wisdom in these songs. When I heard this song the words became written on my heart. I immediately knew that he had much to teach me and I had to listen. I have never regretted it.
I am a brother to you.....through Jackson. I found him when ROLLING STONE named " Late For The Sky " as one of 1975's top 10 albums...my little brother's tombstone says " Into a dancer you have grown " ( he had lost the ability to walk, last 5 years of his life ) and my older brother's suicide note read " I never knew what I loved in you / I don't know what you loved in me " . Every day , from 1975 -- until somebody's feelin' stupid, standin' round, cryin' as we (they) ease me down.
This album is a great encapsulation of life itself. Jackson Browne doesn't get enough attention or respect, especially amongst my generation, we never got to grow up in the 60s-70's but some of us often reach back for those years' music despite the fact I was born in 1990. Timeless words and music.
This must be one of the most beautiful songs ever made, and oh what to say about David Lindleys playing on that slide guitar cuts to the heart like nothing else on earth ♥️🎸💯thank you for your post awesome post
Many of the songs are still prophetic, even to this day. "For Every Man..........." That is why he is still relevant. Every year, ticking away, his lyrics mean more and more.
I haven't listened to this song in a while. I always thought of it as a song about his youth and finding a love or a way to go. But I can relate it my present situation as a widow finding my way. I love the depth of Jackson's music. He always finds a way to touch my soul.
I have never seen him live, although I watch as many live videos and interviews as I can. I think he has taken every minute of his life, embraced it, squeezed everything he could learn from it and turned it into lyrics to share with the world. I certainly have learned a lot from his music. Thanks, Jackson!
I said it before and will say it again........Jackson lost something when he recorded and performed music without David.......The best marriage he ever had, musically. David and Jackson together, music magic..........
I agree. I look for the beauty in his songs. His music has inspired and shaped me when I was a young man. Listening to this still brought a glint of tear in my eyes... so poignant so powerful.
He is a very thoughtful and genuine man and it clearly reflects in his music. There are many of his songs that obviously shows that he isn't afraid to dig deep for the words he needs to express himself.
I was very lucky to see Jackson Browne live twice in my life -- once at the "NoNukes" concerts in NYC in the early 80s, and once in about 2009 in Melbourne, Australia. The latter concert showed him to be a calm, humble, sweet performer with even more talent than he had as a young star. I love the poetry of his lyrics and the gentle purity of his voice. He's the male Joni Mitchell.
How can anyone select only ONE FAVORITE song from the "Late Fot The Sky"album?! The entire composition should be enshrined as one greatest wonders of the music world!!! Listen closely the music and the lyrics, as I have many many times, a d you just might hear a se.i- biographical piece of Jackson Browne's life in his journey to e lightenment.
Browne is so poetic and prophetic, and Lindley is as good as a guitarist as any of the great guitarists out there, and even more talented that he plays so many unique stringed instruments not just guitars
@coryjim1 As a teenager, a friend and I were lucky enough to meet him at one of his shows. We were teenage Jackson Browne groupies in the late 80's! He was so kind to us. He dubbed us "The Tie Dye Twins". Eventually he gave us world tour passes and we followed him across the country. I would like to thank him now somehow.
My first Jackson concert was in 1977 at the Paramont in Seattle. Thank you for bringing the memory of that concert to the present...David Lindley was there and they looked and sounded just like this!!
Just wow. I've been following Jackson since he left Sunny Hills, my school's Freeway League sports rival. I've seen him a million times, most recently in Hiroshima. But I listen to this and watch Jackson again so young, writing and singing such a beautiful song. Just wow.
A guy that can simply sing his thoughts, and make me melt with his words, voice (and face), says a lot. l never was into these macho ''bash 'n strut'' guys. Words, are all he's using to draw out emotion. lt sure works.
Absent from my family, then in Bethlehem, Pa., I slept on the beach near Lincoln, Ore., in September 1975. In the clearing sky, I saw the faces of my children, Jen and Chris, and I began my return home. Oh, the angels are older, and I see their faces when I hear Browne sing this song. Bob Sprague (I'm not sure what I'm trying to say it could be I've lost my way)
I was so fortunate to hear him perform this not long after it came out...I was at Tulane University in New Orleans for the concert...one of my favorites
Finally discovered this fantastic album in the late 1990s. Don't know how I managed to miss it in the 70s! probably too busy listening to The Who, Eagles, Floyd etc.
Awesome song. I can relate to it to a certain extent. Definitely feel a connection with this song cause it expresses some of how I feel. Thanks for posting and God bless JB and his band.
@Rockstaralan I didn't realize that that was the reason Lindley took a break from music for a while- that's greaat that he's found a good use of musical technology and was able to rejoin Jackson's band. I saw JB & Lindley live this year and they were as amazing as ever!
So glad someone yelled out for this song at the Beacon Theater in NYC in May. He doesn't play it often as its not usually in his set list. He plays it on piano now. Just great songwriting as with all of JB.
Jackson will be the first artist to receive the Gandhi Peace Award. Robert Kennedy Jr. will present it to him on September 14th. How about you trolls throw in the towel when it comes to attacking Jackson.
@4FabBEATLES After years of being unable to play in full-on electric settings for many years, due to suffering from Tinnitus, Lindley was able to re-join Jackson's band full time last year, thanks to the miracle of in-ear monitoring which allows for more control over volume and other aspects of the mix, wherein the user can use as much as little overall volume as desired.
Yeah, there was that financial deal that essentially amounted to hush money to Hannah and her attorneys. When did Joni Mitchell do that before, I don't think I read about that. I did read where Jackson Browne was very angry that she blew the whistle on him.
+xcrunning87. This is only 10 years late. Too bad no on replied back then. I did not write it down word for word, but it went something like this, "I want to sing this for all the people that I have not had the chance to thank, most notable Warren (Zevon) and Crystal (his wife) and their little daughter Ariel (Jackson's Godchild). This was about 4 - 6 months after his wife Phylis Major killed herself, leaving behind Jackson and their 18 month old baby boy. It must have been challenge, but Jackson already was a real father in every way, taking him on tour as a baby with the help of others. When he was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he made a point of thanking all of the people (and he named them) who helped him raise his two boys. I thought that was extraordinary. His whole family was there except for his second son, but his nephew was there and he was thanked. He recognized and thanked them all. And by the way, let us not forget that the song that we are talking about is "Farther On'.
not to make money, but it's a persona he's been trying to live out his whole life... ..."You Love the Thunder" has some weird shit about someone getting roughed up
As a songwriter I think Jackson Browne really isn't that great, most of his songs they all sound the exact same. he really doesn't delve out of his comfort zone, but this album is just one of the top 5 lyrical masterpieces and is up there with anything anyone has ever done because of that. I don't really care for anything else he's done with much enthusiasm, but this album is incredibly beautiful because of his masterful lyricism.
I wasn't at the OJ Simpson murder, either, but have an idea what really went on. I just want to know how Jackson Browne can treat women so badly (see police reports) and still put on this public act?
I forgot so many of his fans don't want to know because they believe his act. Seems strange. I mean, I sure would encourage somebody who likes to beat up women to get help.
+unclealand. Great name. Have you figured out why no one replies to you ? I am the only person who will reply to, telling you that no one is GOING to reply to you, you CREEP.
I agree ❤️❤️❤️
I’m still in love with him after all these years!
He’s so gifted and so beautiful too.
My beautiful soulmate passed 6 years ago today and as he passed I played this song. Jackson was our favorite singer and we spent our years traveling to see him in concert. Thank you for sharing this. It paints such a beautiful picture of your life together. And Jackson's words paint a beautiful picture of hope. I'm so sorry for your loss. 💙
Yes thank you for sharing your beautiful story. Music is one of the few things that can make loss bearable. My deepest condolences for yours.
Perhaps the truest song ever written about being aware of one's human journey. The dreams of youth, tempered by the reality of existence, and aided by the love and support of others, are transformed into the embracing of one's "farther on", wherever it may lead. Beautiful!
there's also These Days, For Everyman, Fountain of Sorrow -- All of his songs are damn good and meaningful.
Michael. So well said. Best description of this song ever.Thank you.
Well said Michael
+Michael Warren. I have been looking through every version on YT to find your comment. It is the best ever description of any Jackson song I know. Have been watching "Going Home" and this song brings a tear to my eye.
Beautifully said
Of all Jackson's wonderful, meaningful, unforgettable songs, this one is my favourite ❤
I was in Kathmandu in 1976. It was nighttime and we were looking for a restaurant in the old quarter called “ Monks Pleasure Palace”. It was known for hash cake and tea ( but that’s another story). Awesome story.
This was my very favorite JB song when i was around 25 years old. Im 60 now and still listening ❤
late for the sky is an incredible album, one of the best in the history of the music. and david lindley is a genius, this music is for dreamers
THEKINKS08 I absolutely agree! What an amazing album!
This song has had a spiritual meaning for me for the last 50 years.
Couldn't have said it better 😊
I'm soon to become 68 years of age. This artist has given me more pleasure than any other.
My kidneys are failing and most of the time I don't feel much like shooting the breeze.
But Jackson. From the deepest part of my ❤. Thank you for your blatant honesty and unforgettably beautiful lyrics.
There is a female version of you and her name is Adele.
God Bless, hope your health improves ❤

Thanks for the message
I just love Jackson Browne and David lindley's beautiful slide guitar
Created in the mist of Jackson's words, David Lindley's steel guitar solo. Bravo to the words and music you gave to all of us and continue to create.
But the angels are older
They can see that the sun's setting fast
They look over my shoulder
At the vision of paradise contained in the light of the past
And they lay down behind me
To sleep beside the road till the morning has come

With my maps and my faith in the distance
Moving farther on
+ Andy Peace and Kenneth Sutherland. Breathtaking.
Love Jackson Browne. I was introduced to his music when I was about 15 years old...and was hooked than...and hooked now. The best song writer ever, in my opinion!

in the seventies , i lived through his songs 56 and still love his music, never get tired of hearing it

Beautiful version of a beautiful song.❤️

I was so young when I found you. I am younger than that now my spiritual twin
In the place where the real world belongs...whom else could have expressed it that way?
He is a very thoughtful and genuine man and it clearly reflects in his music. There are many of his songs that obviously shows that he isn't afraid to dig deep for the words he needs to express himself.

Sorry Sound Stage!! It was great way back when?? All of 12 or 13!!
Good advice..his music is very deep & emotional.
it is like Emerson or Sandburg became a musician and singer
Better than Toledo ❤😂🎉
❤❤❤
thanks for posting such a rare oldie from Jackson.
Give anything to see this Austin city limits again!!!
David Lindley on the strings.
This show had a version of Something Fine that was amazing. Can anyone post this, otherwise advise where we could find it? Thanks.
Is this from 1977?
Brilliant, brilliant song. Miss the harmonies, though.
Melee Hell brought me here.
Yeah, there was that financial deal that essentially amounted to hush money to Hannah and her attorneys. When did Joni Mitchell do that before, I don't think I read about that. I did read where Jackson Browne was very angry that she blew the whistle on him.
I love to see Lindy with dark hair, his hair is white now. I love Lindy, He always makes me laugh
Is that Mr Kotter on the keyboards? Gotta love that white man afro of the 70s.
I listen to this, and all i can wonder is.... Kanye, and all the other people like him cant seriously call themselves musicians and artists can they ?
What does he say before the song? I've listened many times and can never understand it...

Is that what Jackson Browne fans learn from him? Guess women don't mind.
JFK Jr? Oh, well we know how Kennedy men treated women, that's in history books.
Says a lot about you, lady. No wonder you go for Jackson Brown. Most women think a little more of themselves.
All not true
So you guys share Jackson Browne's enjoyment of beating up on women? Hey, great message.
Browne was really upset that Joni Mitchell and some of his other peers blew the whistle on the way he used to beat up on women.
what a talent......... until hollywood ate his soul and shit him out on rodeo drive............
n e v e r fool
He still lives a pretty simple life, off the grid, on an isolated piece of property in California.
yeah........ right.......... that is how you live after you made a fool of yourself....... you live off the grid out of shame
I don't recall him ever making a fool of himself.
run along, greggy......... you're way outta your league here...
If I was gonna be jealous it would be of Neil Young or someone really good. I just want to know why this guy beats up on women.
You work for Browne's PR? She did no such thing! How can he put on this sensitive act and still enjoy hitting women?
I forgot so many of his fans don't want to know because they believe his act. Seems strange. I mean, I sure would encourage somebody who likes to beat up women to get help.
What's all this about Jackson Browne beating up his girlfriends or wife? He couldn't just be putting on a sensitive act just to make money. Could he?
+unclealand. Great name. Have you figured out why no one replies to you ? I am the only person who will reply to, telling you that no one is GOING to reply to you, you CREEP.
did he write this after slapping the crap out of Darryl Hannah?
