You just can't adequately put into words to praise this level of fucking playing. He is 29. Not taking away from anyone else on that stage, but we're all here for this solo. 1:58 comes in and just absolutely puts me to tears in awe of that fucking change back into Auld right back into firing off on all cylinders in that jam. I've played guitar longer than I haven't. Many different influences from all genres. Phish is not my favourite artist. Trey Anastasio is not my biggest influence, nor is he my favorite guitarist. But I will die on the hill defending his entire history on that fucking instrument against anyone detracting from him being the most capable human being to ever pick up a guitar. Again, not my favorite artist, not my favorite guitarist, but he would be my choice if I could only ever listen to any musician on all of their gear, in their peak prime, for the rest of my life. This entire band's history is monumental, and the people I've met at shows or strangers in daily life in mutual understanding of "getting it" are some of the best I've seen of humanity. And every single fucking person there hears, understands, appreciates and absolutely loves music to its atomic level - from the key to the timing, fully aware they are seeing something truly special. My hat's off to Phish for what they have done for music, and all who have and continue to keep Phish in a special place in their heart. Cheers all. Make memories. Be kind to one another, everyone is fighting a battle you don't know about, and we spend the first half of this life looking for the adult you are, and spend the rest of it looking at the child you were. ✌
I remember this moment perfectly. I felt like everything in my life had led to this point, and that I had finally found my tribe, and I wanted to follow this band everywhere.
I saw this show, when I was a sophomore in Highschool with my two best friends, to this day it still blows my mind. The YEM jam…split open, harry hood, this down with disease, so many ridiculously good jams…..I’m 99% sure Trey turned into a robot during some of them….
This was the first ever DWD solo, before the actual song was ever played. They played Auld Lang Syne directly into the solo, which the crowd had never heard. The full song debuted in 1994.
No kidding! I wonder if Trey had worked on this guitar rift before the show or if it just popped up in his head. I love how they always test new songs live before debuting their studio albums
@@mattclinton5351 i know this is months later - but i'm pretty sure he had the song written already at this point - they used the aquarium footage from this show for the DwD music video

When 'Hoist' came out people were stunned at how disorderly it felt compared to the concept album 'Maze.' Of course, 'Down with Disease' came with one of the corniest/cringe-inducing videos of all time. There were all kinds of rumors about what the label might have pressured or forced the band to do. Some fans bad-mouthed the band and wrote them off. Now, go back and listen to some of those bonkers jams from 94-95: 'Sample," "Wolfman's Brother," "DWD," "If I Could," "Julius." Hard to believe THIS was supposed to be the shitty album.
Don Biancamano Are you still a Phan? They recently played one of their best runs in my opinion as well as most others. NYE ‘18 shall be interesting. Man they come & go so fast.
Yeah, sure. But when you have people like fucking Kirk Hammett who just plays fast (not even that well I might add) getting more attention than the Almighty Anastasio, that's just a sin...
I recently realized that I don’t like the sound of guitar solos. I don’t mind the lower pitched ones you hear on certain southern rock songs, or Hootie & the Blowjobs, but I’m just not into that high pitched noise, it’s not pleasant…. A piano is pleasant.
+Larry Grabarek What's wrong with pentatonic scales? Are you averse to any 5 note scales? How do you feel about octatonic scales? Also, how dare he follow the chord progression! What a noob!
+Larry Grabarek You're right though, its not shredding. Its melodic soloing. In my opinion shredding is boring, its just speed. no feeling other than.. well meth, mean speed. Trey creates melodies in his solos, his solos have direction. But to each his own. sorry other people can't respect opinions without name calling. have a good one!
+Stephen Griffin Thanks, I always respect the opinion of others. But simply reacted to the title here. I agree with you. I believe shredding the in proper context of the song is good. But to just see a player fly endlessly across the fret board can be boring. I never said Trey wasn't good in the jam band context.
